Yeah most of these people are probably just as poor as some people who live in the third world. The US is practially a second world country by all but the definition of the word. 38 million are living in poverty in the US (source: census.gov). 10k is not enough money to be able to live in a expensive country like that.

funny thing is, there was one real money glitch at bank some years back. I can't remember the details, but basically someone found that during a certain window of time everyday, the bank's system doesn't properly log transactions on ATM, so money he withdraw during that time doesn't get deducted from his account. The dude didn't tell anyone about this, and just withdraw some money everyday. And he did it for quite a while, until he can't take the feeling of guilt anymore and self-reported to the bank and eventually the police.

I once deposited a $600 check and the teller accidentally typed in $60,000. I noticed it in the app. As a dumb 19yo I was tempted to take it out and run, but I thought better of it. The next day the problem corrected itself, and there was no record of it ever happening.
I used to write back office bank software. Most likely there is a record in the database of the check being modified after it was initially entered. It's very likely the exceptions/fraud department flagged the check due to the unusual amount. At that point an operator can pull up the check in software and the image of the check (front and back) is available for them to spot the mistake. At that point a manual correction is made and the item is posted and sent back out on an X937 cashletter (unless the banks have prior agreements to bypass the Fed or it was an on-us item).

I know an Indian guy who was doing this back in 2005, it took him a year to pay the bank back and they immediately closed his account and blacklisted him once he paid it back.
My ex did it back in the freaking 80s when ATMs were fairly new. Of course he was under no illusions, he knew it was check fraud but he was in the middle of a relapse so he just didn’t care. Took a while to dig out from under that one!
An it's those people that created all the stigma nowadays surrounding checks. I remember when you could use/cash a check anywhere for just about everything. I barely even remember how to write a check anymore
More specifically commiting check fraud, the oldest fraud known to the monetary system since checking accounts existed, which is a clearly stated crime. Tied to their SIN and everything else.
Even if you don't know it's check fraud you should still know free money is way too good to be true and it's illegal in some way, or at the very least know any money they get will have to be returned
As someone who works at a bank, being 10k in the whole, if that account was still negative for say 30days, then the bank will do what’s called a “charge off.” Where they will bring your account to a zero balance and then charge you to pay that money back, and until that money has been paid back you can’t open ANY new accounts until that charge off has been paid.
That s correct, as I refused to pay TD Bank when it bought out my bank Commerce Bank, in NJ. Overnight, thousands of accounts were overdrawn because TD processed debits in a different order. For example, if Netflix tried to take money out and the funds weren’t available, Commerce would not pay and then id renew netflix when i had the money (im speaking of the dvd service before streaming in the early 2000’s). But TD paid everything and made people negative then denied payment on the important bills like car loans and mortgages. This reordering happened with no warning from the new bank. It was all over the news. So i switched banks before it was charged off and told them to go F themselves. All overdrafts accrued were because of what they did, not anything I did so I refused to pay it.

@ in the USA, it flags your SSN for a couple years, you won’t be able to open an account at most banks. I have had this happen to me in the past because i refused to pay overdrafts incurred by Commerce Bank switching to TD Bank in NJ. It was on the news it caused chaos and they put us $1400 in the whole with OD thats we would not have gotten under Commerce Bank. So while my account was still open, i switched banks before the charge off happened. Then i made it clear to TD that they would never see that money. I never paid it. But i believe they never came after me for it because they fid this to hundreds, if not thousands, of Commerce Bank customers. HOWEVER, when i tried opening an account at a different bank a year later, i couldn’t because of TD. So there is some sort of shared database based on your SSN. I doubt it would stop you from opening an overseas account though.
Luckily for them 😂 it's probably there first offense they will do like 2 or 3 years with half at least in ca maybe even just probation and joint suspension

I'm 33 and from the UK. When I was 18 I had a "friend" ask to deposit some money into my account. There was some problem with his. I didn't ask too many questions. It was who I thought to be a friend. Long story short. He was involved with credit card fraud. He's in prison for it today. All these years later. I'm still classed as a "money laundering risk" I've got a 2 year old daughter and I still struggle to open a regular bank account. These people have no idea the issues they've created for the rest of their lives.

I kept getting denied for the major high street banks. Back when debit cards first came out in the 70's, my parents while doing daily accounting for their business would notice multiple transactions would not debit their account. Everything from grocery stores to suppliers. They spoke with their bankers and it was out of their control. Their suppliers were paid, but the money never came from their account. They kept the money aside for 6 months before they spent it just in case, but there were times when the money just .... never came out of their account Sooo ... bank errors in your favor kinda-sorta existed, but those have been rendered extinct due to how instant and interconnected everything is in the current era.

Yeah i work as an anti money laundering investigator for a bank and can tell you this is dumb. No matter how fast you do anything , we see everything done on the account down to location, devices and logins. Even if somehow you got away with this so called "glitch", you would be caught shortly after. Your account would be frozen and closed and the money, if considered criminal property, would be taken from you, as well as having law enforcement notified.
@@kurtwinchell you can raise your limits on your account temporarily as long as you can prove it's likely coming from a legit source of funds, e.g. I saw a lot of people raising limits when the recent ISA limits increased allowing you to have multiples ISAs so I had loads of people asking to move £20k around and had to review each time. You can ask for ATM withdrawal limits to be raised and everything else but you won't get far if you're doing something dodgy such as this stupid tiktok thing.

@@kurtwinchell I sincerely doubt a bank teller would give you $10,000 CASH, against a check you wrote ... From yourself & To yourself, that had not cleared. ATM's now have $100 bills. Larger sized ATM's can hold up to $200,000. Nobody has said they got all their cash out, in 1 day.
What does Chase have to gain from this? They are likely to take a loss too because they didn't foresee that some people are so dumb that they decided to defraud themselves. Even if they could recover most of the money paid out through debt collecting, that would take years.
That's not even true, and it had never been true. You just get charged with misdemeanor instead of felony if it's under a certain threshold. The people that got away with it just didn't get caught.

@@sovereign126 This is called checking fraud. Depending on the severity, you can get 20 years in prison for doing this. The bank would really prefer you just pay the money back with interest and then forget about the whole thing. If you can't pay it back, that's when police show up and you're threatened with long prison sentences until you plea bargain it down.

Back in the day, in the US, you had to be a land owner to vote. Because as a land owner, it meant you had more skin in the game for decisions than those that don't (i.e. more to lose if bad laws were enacted), and because you had land, it was likely you were more educated than those that didn't have land either (that's not the case now of course). Yeah, not everyone should have the right to vote. That's why its a privilege, not a right, and wasn't in the bill of rights or the constitution.
You can't really "just hand the money back" Because you've already committed Check Fraud that is punishable with up to 20 years in prison - If they get you on wire fraud, it can be as much as 30 years.

@@nobodyspecial115 I have seen new ATM's in the city with $100 Bills. Supposedly, a "Business" type account can withdraw huge sums, on a deposited check, same day = A float. The Glitch was ... All accounts at Chase were flagged as High Withdrawals Allowed after a Check deposit. Fake checks took 5 days, to clear. Now Chase has a 5 day hold on all non-business accounts.

you know what is a glitch? being able to withdraw more funds than you have by acciden with the teller and the teller gives you money, then you have to run back to put the difference before it bounce the next day
I think people underestimate scammers a bit too much with "How could anybody fall for this? It's so obvious!" One time, my uncle who works on the tech industry related to online security said this to me. "To you, this email or a video is obviously a scam. It has wrong spelling, this and that the usual lines of blah blah blah. You instantly knew its a scam right? What you dont understand is those lines, those obvious look of a scam acts as a filter. These scammers are smart beyond belief. They are already filtering people they can make money with this template. If you fall for this, then it means you are a viable target to pursue. Otherwise if you catch on it then you are not worth pursuing as you are a harder target. Its like a green light and red light. Red means danger and green is a go. If people go forward when its red then thats the prey." That time I realized how much scary these scammers are.
It's a classic case with email scams. Because sending out emails is dirt cheap/free, but a fake page where you enter credentials costs much more to host.

What I love is that some people are complaining that banks should have safeguards to stop people from committing check fraud, but people in the past did have something to stop themselves from committing check fraud, it was called common sense, but apparently that is in short supply nowadays…
i mean you usually need to use your social security number still, so unless you are using someone else's, its a bit hard to just open a bank account without having some form of real identification towards yourself being used. which is why scammers want your social security and identity, to open fraud accounts and do this scam.

This glitch has been around for a while with Chase. I got fucked and scammed in 2010 with a scam that was set up as if you got a new job and the check was a hiring bonus. It took like 5 years to get it taken care of
I was working in manufacturing back in the '90s, and knew someone whose daughter was doing this, he had to pay the bank back. The guy was telling me how his paycheck, that he hadn't even received yet, was already gone.

The similarity in account withdraws might be related to being the limit of how much Chase's system allowed withdraws from checks that had not cleared, over the window of time between the TikTok being posted and Chase freezing the accounts.

I once deposited a $600 check and the teller accidentally typed in $60,000. I noticed it in the app. As a dumb 19yo I was tempted to take it out and run, but I thought better of it. The next day the problem corrected itself, and there was no record of it ever happening.

I used to write back office bank software. Most likely there is a record in the database of the check being modified after it was initially entered.
It's very likely the exceptions/fraud department flagged the check due to the unusual amount. At that point an operator can pull up the check in software and the image of the check (front and back) is available for them to spot the mistake. At that point a manual correction is made and the item is posted and sent back out on an X937 cashletter (unless the banks have prior agreements to bypass the Fed or it was an on-us item).

I know an Indian guy who was doing this back in 2005, it took him a year to pay the bank back and they immediately closed his account and blacklisted him once he paid it back.
My ex did it back in the freaking 80s when ATMs were fairly new. Of course he was under no illusions, he knew it was check fraud but he was in the middle of a relapse so he just didn’t care. Took a while to dig out from under that one!

As someone who works at a bank, being 10k in the whole, if that account was still negative for say 30days, then the bank will do what’s called a “charge off.” Where they will bring your account to a zero balance and then charge you to pay that money back, and until that money has been paid back you can’t open ANY new accounts until that charge off has been paid.
That s correct, as I refused to pay TD Bank when it bought out my bank Commerce Bank, in NJ. Overnight, thousands of accounts were overdrawn because TD processed debits in a different order. For example, if Netflix tried to take money out and the funds weren’t available, Commerce would not pay and then id renew netflix when i had the money (im speaking of the dvd service before streaming in the early 2000’s). But TD paid everything and made people negative then denied payment on the important bills like car loans and mortgages. This reordering happened with no warning from the new bank. It was all over the news. So i switched banks before it was charged off and told them to go F themselves. All overdrafts accrued were because of what they did, not anything I did so I refused to pay it.

@ in the USA, it flags your SSN for a couple years, you won’t be able to open an account at most banks. I have had this happen to me in the past because i refused to pay overdrafts incurred by Commerce Bank switching to TD Bank in NJ. It was on the news it caused chaos and they put us $1400 in the whole with OD thats we would not have gotten under Commerce Bank. So while my account was still open, i switched banks before the charge off happened. Then i made it clear to TD that they would never see that money. I never paid it. But i believe they never came after me for it because they fid this to hundreds, if not thousands, of Commerce Bank customers. HOWEVER, when i tried opening an account at a different bank a year later, i couldn’t because of TD. So there is some sort of shared database based on your SSN. I doubt it would stop you from opening an overseas account though.

I'm 33 and from the UK. When I was 18 I had a "friend" ask to deposit some money into my account. There was some problem with his. I didn't ask too many questions. It was who I thought to be a friend. Long story short. He was involved with credit card fraud. He's in prison for it today. All these years later. I'm still classed as a "money laundering risk" I've got a 2 year old daughter and I still struggle to open a regular bank account. These people have no idea the issues they've created for the rest of their lives.

Back when debit cards first came out in the 70's, my parents while doing daily accounting for their business would notice multiple transactions would not debit their account. Everything from grocery stores to suppliers. They spoke with their bankers and it was out of their control. Their suppliers were paid, but the money never came from their account. They kept the money aside for 6 months before they spent it just in case, but there were times when the money just .... never came out of their account

Yeah i work as an anti money laundering investigator for a bank and can tell you this is dumb. No matter how fast you do anything , we see everything done on the account down to location, devices and logins.
Even if somehow you got away with this so called "glitch", you would be caught shortly after. Your account would be frozen and closed and the money, if considered criminal property, would be taken from you, as well as having law enforcement notified.
Sounds fake, and doesn't make sense. What bank teller is cashing these checks? Every account I've had has a $500 daily limit on the ATM...
@@kurtwinchell you can raise your limits on your account temporarily as long as you can prove it's likely coming from a legit source of funds, e.g. I saw a lot of people raising limits when the recent ISA limits increased allowing you to have multiples ISAs so I had loads of people asking to move £20k around and had to review each time. You can ask for ATM withdrawal limits to be raised and everything else but you won't get far if you're doing something dodgy such as this stupid tiktok thing.

The bank would really prefer you just pay the money back with interest and then forget about the whole thing. If you can't pay it back, that's when police show up and you're threatened with long prison sentences until you plea bargain it down.

All accounts at Chase were flagged as High Withdrawals Allowed after a Check deposit. Fake checks took 5 days, to clear. Now Chase has a 5 day hold on all non-business accounts.

This glitch has been around for a while with Chase. I got fucked and scammed in 2010 with a scam that was set up as if you got a new job and the check was a hiring bonus. It took like 5 years to get it taken care of
