Yep. I became a single dad at 18 and nearly fell into the trap of sticking your kid in front of the tv to keep them entertained. I’m so glad I’m young and aware of these type of things otherwise I could’ve ruined my sons life alongside all the other parents who feel into the trap. If I have to put the TV on while I clean/cook (which is rare now that I have a new partner) it’s either bluey or an old cartoon I used to watch like yugioh/pokemon.
It’s tough being a single parent and I understand how people end up choosing the easy option but it is horrendous for your children

Children under 2 should watch maximum 1 hour of TV a day. Lazy parents let them watch much more and then get suprised. Like the cousin of my wife. One kid has ADHD and the other one is autistic. They are all the time before the screen since they are small. The evil is lazy parents.

Coming from a parent of a 2 year old, TV is a distraction, but we let ours watch actual educational stuff for a decent chunk of the day and hes actually really smart for his age. the difference is us being there with him while he watches and helping him learn. cocomelon is just songs and distractions to keep them in a trance. its honestly scary when you watch your kid watch cocomelon, its like theres nothing in their head. ours watches miss rachel (comparable view count to cocomelon) mostly and she teaches words, letter sounds, counting, sign language... at 2 years old he knows his whole alphabet vocally and in sign language, and can count to 20, among knowing hundreds of words.
All this to say, cocomelon is NOT educational, and coming from a parent, DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS WATCH THIS SHOW.
That said, he is very capable and frequently does play with toys on his own, color, paint, etc with no tv. So many parents just shove a tv or phone in their kids face and go do their own thing.

People are mad that these shows do a poor job raising their children, when the shows are just a very small part of a kid's time if you are doing your job as a parent. The curriculum for her class is embarrassing. They are doing stuff in first grade that mine was doing before kindergarten because I just worked with her a little. And I'm not genius or super parent. I had a toddler cousin who would come and stay at my house when I was a teen, I was about maybe 14-16. There were many times I had to take care of them and do things like feed them. But they refused to eat at all and just whined and complained. I managed to get it done but noticed a significant switch up the moment I turned on Cocomelon - as I was told to do by my aunt.
That child was known to throw tantrums all the dam time which is precisely why I never liked taking care of him, so I was pretty amazed/freaked out by how silent he became just sitting in front of the TV watching Cocomelon. And, as a teen who didn’t understand the detriment, I would always play Cocomelon to shut the kid up so I wouldn’t have to deal with him. Kinda feel bad now but at the same time not really, it was a parenting issue on that part.

He still watches it, but it's always the second option compared to playtime date in the park. Of course, his mum makes sure to limit his screen time, maybe that's why he loves the outdoors. The same can't be said for the iPad kids though.

It's like she reverted backwards. All I did was find some old Barney and Rugrats episodes on RUclips for them to use instead. My argument was that they had me watch these on VHS for my quiet time, so it should be fine for her. We noticed her going back to her old self within a week. I was a homemaker and mother and when it's time to do chores, you have to find something to keep your little ones out of trouble in the meantime, so you find it. My kids sat and watched Disney channel until I was done. Also, there is an uptick of parents working from home. The parents fell into the "This will keep them busy until my chore/ job is done". I know numerous parents like this. Their home life every evening is the same thing. Kids on tablets watching RUclips and the parents are absorbed in their phones on Facebook and instagram talking to people they haven’t seen for 10 years.
Some parents don’t put their kids first, and they are looking to blame others when it’s their own fault they don’t put time into their kids.

I knew how to read, write in cursive, speak fluently and draw by 3-ish to 4, out of diapers at 16 months, worked on a chicken farm collecting eggs and fending off coyotes with a .22 rifle before school every day since kindergarten, drove to the store for Grandma to buy her cigarettes and lottery tickets in the farm truck at 7, helped Grandpa build barns and cabins at 8, learned how to play guitar and drums at 9, played outside, cooked my own breakfast and lunch, all the while not watching anything but the world except sometimes watching VHS tapes and playing SEGA here and there. I'm also autistic. Direct your children to efficient and creative things, or subject them lazily to mind-numbing media, and that's what they'll consume.

Dude, this really hit me after watching. My daughter is 2 and learns a lot of her words from Ms. Rachel. She also watches The Land Before Time and can explain what’s happening in her own baby language while staying focused on eating. But when Cocomelon comes on, it’s a total zone-out-she doesn't talk, listen, or even eat! She just freezes in front of the screen.
Quick tip for parents: reduce the brightness and backlight of the TV to lower than the room light during the day. This helps reduce the risk of eye strain and limits the impact of those bright colors, especially in shows like Cocomelon.
That being said, I have to give credit to Cocomelon for helping her pick up dance moves and hopping around! It’s all about the timing. Dance with your kid while watching-it pulls their focus away from the TV, and you can teach them fun nursery songs like "Baa Baa Black Sheep" while you’re at it.

    • @fraskf6765

Good advice on the brightness and backlight on the TV! I wouldn't have thought of that. I so wish I had found Ms. Rachel back when my daughter was a toddler, I think she'd have done much better in terms of speech and comprehension much earlier. She did enjoy some of those older movies I watched as a kid, but she really would go kinda nuts over Cocomelon and Paw Patrol whenever they'd be on.
Honestly I don't think I would have even considered the vibrant and bright colors or how often the frames cut without this being brought up in videos like this, though it's so obvious in hindsight. It's a really good example of how much more we need to be screening these things *before* we let our kids watch them and keep in check how much time they're spending with them. They may not be using inappropriate language or violence or whatnot, but we still should be more aware of these things and correct them.

Doing this makes the kid dependent on things like cocomelon for stimulation and creates an addiction. Fuck this. This is not 100% parents fault. You can't claim something is safe and educational, then engineer it to be the most addicting and developmentally disabling show on RUclips. How is that ethical? How is that moral? How even is that legal and not false advertising? The show is designed to be binged watched. That's the entire intent. When a kid watches this show for hours, they are using the product in the intended way. The gas lighting of Cocomelon saying to use their product in moderation when it is designed to be binged is comical and very sad. It's basically just a cop out to allow them to make a dangerous product. This is like shooting someone with a gun and then getting mad at them for not dodging. Excusing Cocomelon for purposefully trying to make a very harmful product and advertising that product as safe and educational is just wrong. Am I saying it is 100% their fault? No. But like most things in this world to those of us with a functional IQ, I can see that there is plenty of fault on both sides here. No one should be giving Cocomelon a complete pass on this

Now if your a child, in your formative years getting exposed to this, it does make sense that you will either get worsened adhd symptoms or develop a short attention span.

People have kids without wanting to raise them. Look at how many parents take their children to the park and just go on their phone all the time.

As a dad, I find it really challenging to raise kids in today’s society, especially with the easy access to RUclips and video games. Personally, I limit the time my children spend on these activities. I believe it’s important to set boundaries rather than outright ban them. For instance, in our household, my kids are allowed to play games and watch RUclips only on weekends-mostly on Saturday and Sunday. During the week, from Monday to Friday, they focus on schoolwork, and while they aren’t allowed to play games or watch RUclips, they can watch something like Pokémon on Netflix.
Interestingly, I’ve noticed a significant difference in their behavior depending on what they do. When they play games, they become so absorbed that they hardly interact with us or go outside. But during the week, when gaming and RUclips are off-limits, they naturally turn to other activities like reading, drawing, or playing outside. It's striking how different they are when screens aren't the main focus, and it’s a bit of a shame to see how much screens can take over.

No one's being supported to be happy healthy or have families the profits are skimmed off elsewhere while people are left to struggle. It's only a few short steps away then your at total 1984 computers are our gods slave planet scenario imho. Also, blue light and brain development in young people x height - I'm sure there's something up there.

      Tinfoil hat here too.
We are slowly turning entire generations of humans into the perfect slave labourers. Dopamine and stimulus addicted generation behaving like dogs that are in dog education program and rewarded with stimulation instead of dog treats. Same goes for all people addicted to porn. It's the ultimate coping mechanism for everything bad in life for lot of people...

There are massive differences between adult and child brain development. That why school and young kids tv show are great example of how to brainwash kids however adult already can think for themselves and some have good mental fortitude to fight these brainwash

This is a legit thing. We got our kids to stop watching Cocomelon long before this video was a thing. It was reported that kids would get addicted to it in the same ways you get addicted to cocaine. It is real, when we turn off any other TV show our kids don't get upset but when we used to turn off Cocomelon our kids would both lose their shit and go insane for sometimes 1-3 hours. That's when we knew something was off. Also for people criticizing parents here... We only let our kids watch 1-3 hours of TV and movies depending on the day. If you think that is too much you obviously have no partner or children in your life while working 40+ hours a week. tldr: Kids only need to watch like 1 hour a day to get cooked by this.

Michael Bay invented the super fast jump cut technique in his Transformers movies already in 2007. Trying to watch that shit just makes me rage. I have never been able to watch more than 5 minutes of a Transformers flick.

Watch the 1977 Japanese silly/horror classic House if you want a really early example of hyperactive editing, as the director was previously only experienced with Japanese TV commercials. But then again, it's counterbalanced by plenty of slower emotional moments that Micheal Bay certainly lacks, LOL. It's definitely not for young children though

They were doing that shit when music videos were a big thing back in the 80's and 90's, siskel and ebert derisively referred to it as "MTV editing" when it started making its way into kids films in the late 80's.

@Hammerhead547 I'm a gen-Xer . I'd like to push back here. We're talking about 2s cuts in Michael Bay movies. I'll venture that the music videos in the 80s / 90s felt super fast for the period but still not to the extreme that Michael Bay took it to. I'm happy to be corrected though.

Well this a western first world problem and not entirely the parent's fault. You went from traditional families to Nuclear Families and both parents go to work because you can't support yourself from all the taxes and high payments
