The kids can’t run away- they have no friends, no acquaintances, no other family aside from themselves. That’s how some of these people get away with it.
yeah, there is a response video to this one where some of the kids grow up, when they hit 16 its common for them to get emancipated. which, is probably just the courts being civil.
Who can they run away to ? Family is not nearby and they have no friends. If they are in conflict with their parents, they are trapped with them, since they can't go to their room for privacy. Sounds like a nightmare.

yeah also illegal to be homeless kind of. it's against the law to not have a adress and what's worse is you can't put your address on your brothers apartment either because you have to live there. i was homeless last year and god was it painfull dealing with the SOC. i got ignored for 2 weeks untill i wrote them an Email saying if i don't have a meating booked by next week i would come over there and burn the entire place down. then i got a meeting the next day. still took 2months to get any money and when i asked about help with my living condition they said SOC don't deal with that anymore. 3months later my friends 50year old junky dad who never worked a day in his life got a appartment and wellfare from them as soon as he contacted them. i was fucking 25years old last year. oh and it was durring november december. cold and wet AF.

When I focus on my situation and making my situation better, that's the only way things have ever gotten better for me. Every time I saw someone else getting something for free that I didn't get, and I dwelt on it, I became resentful, and my situation worsened.
When I was 12-13 my family went through genuine financial trouble and we were forced to live in a camper that was parked on my grandparents lawn. It's not a life style they chose so I don't hold any resentment for the years I grew up in there. Luckily my older sister moved out before we got into that situation So I was the only kid in the camper with my parents. In our first camper I did not have a room. I had bunkbeds that were apart of the wall. Think literally just holes in the wall. While they were much more spacious then the ones shown in the video. As someone who was just coming into my teens years, not having a bedroom really sucked. I had a curtain that I could close, however it felt really suffocating to have it closed so I never closed it. When we got our upgraded camper thanks to the help of some family members. I finally had gotten a separate room. I considered getting a bedroom as a Christmas gift. So I totally get the 15 year old girl hating her life, because of the lack of privacy.
I lived in one for about a year, and I think having one parked isn't as bad (that's what I did) it has perks but I wouldn't subject a child to it unless I had to
I lived in a house with 3 bedrooms. 1 parent 6 kids all boys except the oldest who is a girl. The only one complaining she had to share her bedroom was the girl. And its also not a big deal. Like its for sleeping. If you want time on your own go outside.
I lived in the Philippines for almost 3 years. There are people over there with mud floors because of how often it floods. There is no reason to clean the floor, more diseased mud is coming soon. Others lived in "houses" made of bamboo and metal roofing for walls. They had it for the roof too. It was old used roofing so it had leaks and they had to catch water in bluckets and bottles. In that camper you still lived better than 99% of the world. As poor as your family became they were still richer than 99% of the world. Being poor in America is like being a king in most places.
I grew up with a single mom. She was a terrible mom. A drug addict, an alcoholic, a whore, a woman who completely neglected me. But on the flip side, she neglected me, she didn't pay attention to me, she didn't force me to live in some shitty van, she didn't manipulate me into thinking I was a girl, she didn't go out of her way to abuse me, or control me, shit was simpler back in the day I swear... Well anyway, my point being, having freedom was really important for me, as well as being able to stay in one area and "grow out my roots" so to speak. I feel really bad that many of those children won't have the same opportunities as I had. And I am literally the poster child of "wow tough luck on the parents you got". Shit is getting really wack these days.
Similar story here. Me and my siblings were left to find our own ways. Made us all very self reliant and unique being left to our own fates. She died young too, at 44. I had to adopt my youngest sister who was 7 at the time. Made me street savvy and mature fast.
Believe me it’s good to have freedom than parents who are control freaks. My mother is such a control freak and manipulative that she makes my brother hating on my dad who actually worked hard provide for the family. My father succumbed to depression and death at young age because of her. She tried to control me but I was never close to her and brush off her manipulative tactics. I just hope she leave my brother alone as now he has a family.

Now, my wife and I have 2 boys, and it gives me anxiety just thinking how insanely overwhelmed my mother must have been all the time. She had no family, no support.... and she kept us alive and fed.... For that alone, she's a better person than I could ever hope to be. Morale is...... if you we raised by a single mother, you were raise by a super hero...

You only say this because you are part of the 1 billion that don't live like this. 6 billion other people live in conditions like this. I know plenty of people that lived in tiny spaces like a bus that had great childhoods and are wonderful people. The real problem is that people who film themselves doing this are usually nutcases and the problem is less about the living space and more about the parenting. (The ones that consistently move their kids around across the country, that's a different story than simply living in a tiny home.)
rat droppings are hazardous to anyone, i grew up in a rat infested home and know what it can do to a growing person, it's horrible on all of your necessary systems for physical and mental growth, as well as the fact that it just makes you sick. i lived in a room were the ceiling was pannels you could push up so the rat shit fell on me all the time, it got to the point where i tacted a tarp over my ceiling but then it had to be cleaned regularly. A bad situation for all involved
I have to say, one of the worst things about the human condition is how difficult it is to actually express your real feelings to people you have a connection with because you're afraid they won't care, resent you, gaslight, or otherwise manipulate you. Like there's a level of social complexity to life that I think most people don't understand and aren't prepared for, or the other person is just really toxic and you can't separate yourself from them.
it works if you do it right, my cousin does it with his wife and 2 kids. but he has a succesful resteraunt and sorta just gets paid. but, at least once a week they are camping, or going to a hotel for a few days. they actually travel, go see stuff, go camping, go on adventues. you would think, in any of these RV videos, they would be at some momunent, or national park, or amusement park......

I grew up unwillingly in a 5th wheel camper for 8 years with my mom, brother, and 2 big dogs. My girlfriend brought up camping recently and my immediate response was, “No.” I’m used to sleeping in Walmart parking lots and jumping camp sites because we couldn’t afford it, and I refuse for me or my children to ever experience that again. I have too much trauma from that lifestyle to ever go back. It’s only “camping” or a “vacation” if the camper isn’t your primary residence. Otherwise it’s classified as homelessness per Section 725 of Subtitle VII-B of the McKinney Vento Act.
I used to live in an rv with 7 other people, not for views but genuinly cuz we couldn't afford a house or apartment, and it was actually a living hell. I was 10 at the time, so i wasn't particularly at the age where I needed privacy, but I did have to share a room with five people (including me) we had a "compost" toilet that stunk so badly everyday that we literally had to spend most of the day outside, the compost toilet needed to be changed everyday with a trash bag, and you literally had to carry it a hundred feet till you reached the dumpster. The RV was so tiny you couldn't fit four adults in it, let alone 6 kids and two adults. No hate against my parents, they were really struggling at the time, but looking at vloggers like this makes me think back on how suffocating my own experience was, I can't even imagine it being online for everyone to see, not to mention having to pretend I liked it... Moral of the story: never force your kids to live in a hellish environment for view, actually, don't vlog your kids PERIOD...
Feeling sorry about your experience... but it is totally your parents' responsibility to have enough money to raise you and your brothers and sisters well... Should not give birth to so many if they don't have enough money.

Asmon was mostly right about the parents with weird lifestyles pushing it onto their kids, except I remember very clearly one video I saw about a couple that lived like it was the 60's, had their whole house decorated like that, dressed like it, car like it, except the one room in the house that wasn't in the theme was their son's room because they let him decorate it how he wanted and that's the right way to do it imo
It's difference between parents who love their children and who obsessed with themself and their lifestyle I guess. But most often, unfortunately, the exception confirms the rule.
Tbh, pushing your lifestyle onto your kids pretty much is what parenting is. Everyone tries to instill their values onto their kids as they should. But you certainly can go too far with that, as the kids still need some autonomy over their lifestyle. Parent that doesn't push any kind of values onto their kids is not even a parent. Not really arguing against you as I doubt you claimed otherwise, but the internet's tendency to declare any kind of rugged lifestyle that involves children as immediate child abuse ticks me off a bit. Even in this video some of the points were kinda meh while others were more legitimate issues, like the "not having big enough desk for schoolwork" is kind of a stretch. They aren't med students, how large of a desk does a 9 year old need? Or how cleaning up a pet cage is unsuitable task for a child. If that is child abuse, then no wonder the kid will get PTSD for having to unclog a toilet as an adult. Kids doing something that makes them slightly uncomfortable is not child abuse. That's teaching them how to deal with the not-so-nice aspects of life. For as long as you don't go overboard with it and the kids aren't like 5.

But if you live in a van with cameras and their should live with you in cramped space without education - it's just because it's convenient for you and your lifestyle, and what you push on them - it's this narcissistic and egotistic value. I mean, imagine Asmongold having children - would you not think that pushing his lifestyle (the current one we see) to his children may be neglect or abuse? Some parents accommodate for their children instead. If they think they lived a hard life growing up, they would choose not to let their kids go through the same thing. I'm in the firm belief that once you've become a parent, your life is not your own anymore. For every major decision you make, the children always has to be in the picture not as an accessory, but as living beings each with their own needs and wants.

when i was young my parents and i went gamping witha camper van every single summer, what those people don't get is that the van isn't "to live in" but rather "to sleep in" we spent all the time at the beach, going around cities watching monuments, visiting cities the van had a huge tend attatched that more than doubled the size available, where we put folding chairs and a table to have meals, read, play, for me to do homework etc... the van is meant to: sleep, go to the bathroom, have the frige and a stove to cook (since we mostly used it in the summer we didn't even shower inside) the idea of using one to live inside all year round and to actually live inside all day long is crazy to me, for reference, if a prison gave you that much space to live in it would be considered a crime against human rights
Living in a camper or RV as a couple is much different than raising a family in one. My parents live in a camper full time and I (adult) tag along with them on trips. It’s a ton of fun but doesn’t come without its challenges. Your basic needs are dependent on others. For example, I am a night owl and need an extra hour or two of sleep compared to my parents. My stepdad is a big dude. He wakes up at 5-6 AM and the entire camper shakes. If they have a conversation (even whispering) you can hear all of it. It’s impossible to get a decent rest. Being tired and cranky all of the time is exhausting. That’s not even diving into the other aspects such as the bathroom situation. I’d love to have my own camper. I don’t have kids and love to travel. Those vehicles aren’t meant to be lived in full time but you can make it work for 1-2 people.
growing up i knew a kid who was dragged rv camping with her parents every single weekend when it was warm out and they HATED it. i feel so bad for the kids stuck doing it year round

My father is a strict vegetarian, and for 7 years is a strict vegan. But he never forced us to eat the way he does - which I am grateful for, I might have hated him if he made us all grow up as vegans forcing us to eat only what he wanted to eat. So I cannot imagine being forced to live on the road because your parent likes living on the road.🤦🏽♀️

same, my coworker is vegetarian. She's never push her diet to her kids because she knew her kids needed more protein and meat to grow up healthy, string and be able to involve in sports. She said, once they're adults, they slowly be vegetarian and be religious.
Just to kind of further what I was talking about. My sister has two kids that basically are like sentient mushrooms with a Nintendo switch connected to their Hands. She has to limit the amount of screen time they get so they don't just vegetate after school. People can think what they want of the people doing the van life. And I think you should at least have something the size of a greyhound or a school bus if you're going to have five Kids. Because God damn that's a big family. But arguably those kids are living more of a life in their youth than most people will live as adults. And really that's kind of the message. Public school and a lot of normal life just trains you to live your life and your cubicle existence. It basically raises people to be domesticated failures.

I don't think it's the shelf thats the abuse. I slept in small spaces as a kid because I liked to. It's the fact that they give themselves a huge bed and then make the kids sleep on the shelf.

I knew a family that had 11 Kids and they lived in two run down campers. They just didn't have the money to afford too much, even though the father and eldest children worked really hard to provide for the others. From what I heard last they now have a house and are doing really well.

@FullmentalAlcoomist 10 children used to be pretty common in the past. Now, you can make the argument that it was due to high mortality rates, and that modern standards makes this superfluous. However, many countries are suffering from low birth rates with many people being childless. If you would be a good father and can support that many children (not saying anyone in the video is) then it's a good idea in my opinion to have a large family.

this is one of the biggest reasons for sibling rivalry too; when resources are spread thin amongst many family members. i come from a family of 9 and the amount of unhappiness. anger. frustration etc. all becaus. we dont have the same amount of belongings or resources (one person has earbuds while noone else does or 1 person has a device while no one else does, or 1 person eats one too mnany chicken etc) leaving us all unhappy. many people are blind that more kids = more people = more LIVING COST. being selfish just because you want to be known as the biggest family etc. is not justifyable in my book ever. absolute horrendous parenting, seen it many times in other areas outside of "van life". good video, agree with the reaction/takes.

I wasn't an RV kid, but my parental guardians were pretty close to this. no privacy, do as i say environment, helicopter parented, surrounded by half siblings constantly and guilt tripped into helping my needy mom and grandma that displayed selfish parental behavior. staying in a hoarder house with animals that disgusting. now that I'm 31 now my family wonders why I am anti social and want to be left the hell alone.
The thing is, most of these RV parents spend a lot of the day telling the kids how "special" and "different" this lifestyle is, and spend the whole time telling them what they have that other kids don't. Its almost cultish in the way that they make the kids feel like "why would you complain, this is amazing, you'd be ungrateful if you wanted a NORMAL life!" as if an RV life is the equivalent of growing up a millionaire.
None of these people are actually homeless. They're glamping. Touring the country in expensive custom RV conversions. No one would watch if they were actually homeless. Or actual homeless people don't do livestreams.

I guarantee most kids whose parents force a camera in their faces nearly 24/7 grow up having mental issues, identity issues and also end up hating their parents. parents forced me into skydiving my dad owned a drop zone. cest pool of alcoholic abusers... ruined the first 5 years of my adult life. my dad sold the business because it was going under and i got away from him and the alcohol and have never been happier. but i hate my father now, my kids are never going to be allowed to be alone with him or his wife. and my favorite anime is Berserk because of how relatable the abuse guts goes through is. treat your kids well
As a father of 2 kids, my kids are not online of any sort. I do not put any photos of my kids up for the world to see, nor does my wife. I told my parents to keep them off of Facebook and man did they take it bad. Don’t care though. They’re my kids. Also, if you’re going to homeschool your kids, you should at least sign them up for some sort of extra caricature activity where they’re interacting with other kids.
I'm sorry but if I choose for my kids to live in an RV they're 1000% sleeping in the big bed. If they don't want me sleeping on that bed I'll sleep on the floor or one of those closet "beds" because I made the decision to live in a big ass car rather than a normal house.

4:53 grew up on a farm breeding, raising, training, and selling horses. We worked all summer long, fixing fences, getting the horses in the bar to brush down, bathe, or treat etc. Many would consider the amount of work we did would be crazy to the average childhood but the trade off what a unique experience and lifestyle that other are way to quick to be jealous of. Considering we always had food, new experiences, traveling experience going on trail rides or horse shows etc. My parents tried to provide many new experiences with martial arts, volunteering, and any sport we asked to play. We all played basketball, baseball, football, soccer, track, etc. I hardly got to go to others houses, or have people over (they don't enjoy working when visiting lol). Lucked out in my teens when the business lost momentum and it became a family hobby which meant down sizing from 20+ horses to like 8 and mostly letting them pasture grass instead of pulling them in to groom them for horse shows or selling. We had a garden to take care of daily, troughs to water, and every week we needed to jump on the tractor and put out hay. I started to hangout with a buddy close by and we played Halo all the time. I'd go back just to do chores before going back to his house. So I got some freedom for awhile. Then again I only visit once a year and hate that state now
There's definitely a right way and a wrong way to homeschool. It's not an excuse to be lazy. It's the opposite. Do your damn research on what functioning adults need to be independent and then interdependence in life. There are homeschooling groups that provide the resources to make sure you are covering all the necessities for higher education, and to supplement the things that are harder to get in a homeschool setting, like regular conversation, socializing, and relationship skills. Homeschooling is a great option if you commit to taking it seriously.
@@rwberger6 I was homeschooled up to the 6th grade and had a generally positive experience with it. The main thing my parents did right is that we had lots of extra curricular activities.

The thing he said about the kids not being seen as a separate person is exactly the opposite. It’s because parents see their kids as objects, pets basically, that they try to push these things on them and control their lives. If they actually saw them as extensions of themselves (respawns in a video game) then they would treat their kids with respect and treat them how they would want to be treated by having a certain amount of freedom while also being given safety and security.
Old houses with basement toilets tend to have curtains installed since they aren't actually furnished bathrooms, there's nothing wrong with that. But in their case (Vans/RVs) there's also a total lack of space, separation of rooms, privacy, etc., making basic everyday amenities ten times worse
It's funny, when someone is walking they can see everything trough the upper slit in the blinds. Even someone climbing on the bed above could see everything.
As somebody who spent half their life living in shoe box of a motel room with 5+ family members because we lost our house this baffles me. These families clearly have money but subject their kids to a lifestyle where they live like sardines in a can, constantly moving around, 0 privacy from the family or even from the internet. If it wasn’t for social media I highly doubt these parents would unironically do this lifestyle. Can’t imagine what these kids deal with when the phone/camera isn’t rolling
My uncle's family (my mom's sister's husband) is a military family from the countryside. He had to move about once every 2-4 years... and once out of the service, he got a high profile accounting position to support a larger family of 6. None of my cousins had ever been able to sustain any form of meaningful relationship until way later into their teens because their dad was able to find a settled down job. Most of them have social anxiety because they had to adjust to different social cues across America, racism, city and country life, and the lack of being able to fit in. If my cousins who had such such shaky childhood grew up this way, I can't imagine what it's like to be a kid whose entire life lives on the road, never able to make friends, have a routine familiarity with the world outside the vehicle, and the lack of privacy when they want to get away from it all. What these parents are doing has good intentions because they want to expose their kids to the variety the country has to offer... I get it. My parents moved ever 3-4 years since I was in kindergarten to university and the biggest impact is how socially awkward and introvert I am. I was never able to form stable relationship ever, since people to me just feel like visitors and it was back when the internet is still a thing for nerds. I ended up not being able to remember real people's names faces, and become socially awkward and anxious in populated areas, as if I'm not supposed to be there.
If you want to teach the kids about the country, then take a week to take them on a trip to different parts of the country once or twice a year. You have more than 10 years, thats at least 20 trips.
living in a van with even one kid is insane. how is that even adulting? Also, monetizing your child online is insane. I've seen social influencers who did that and I immediately unfollowed forever. I consider it child abuse. There is no way the kids sleeping on the floor is "comfier than a tent". Parents making bullshit excuse to abuse their child. You can get a $1500 tent thats bigger than a damn van. Selfish parents are easily discarded once you're an adult and realize how messed up they made your life. Most people will spend 10-15 years from the age of 20 to undo all the damage and/or crap their parents did or didn't do. These kids are already behind the curve.
If I was Addison, I'd get myself committed to a mental institution too, just to escape my family from hell. Living in a mental institution has always been 1 of my biggest nightmares, but I have to say it does sound like paradise compared to that freaking RV. Wtf

The largest detriment and abuse to these kids is depriving them of social circles and friends. We are at our core social creatures more than anything else, and consistently socializing with others your age is a need. You will be at an insurmountable disadvantage for the rest of your life if you don’t learn how to interact in communal social settings. It’s literally abusive to deprive them of the need for social interaction with other children that aren’t their own siblings.

This amount of space is no different than how families in the old west grew up, in the 1800's and earlier. Tiny one-room log cabins with bunk beds is how whole families would live. Larger families than these here because they had like 5 or 6 kids usually. Tiny furniture, tiny beds, tiny tables, tiny everything. And no internet, Netflix, movies, or video games. No money. Just work and school and doing chores around the house/farm. That was normal for thousands of years all over the world. The kids got to move out when they got married and moved in with their spouses and started their own family. By comparison this Van Life stuff would have seemed incredibly luxurious and amazing in every way.
My parents decided to care about what I wanted and it changed my life. My dad wanted me in soccer. He didn’t want me to do martial arts cause he thought I’d get in fights at school and it’s all I wanted. I finally got him to buckle and he put me in TaeKwonDo… ended up doing TaeKwonDo, Brazilian Jiu Jitzu, Korean Sword, Wrestled in high school, went on to do anything warriors in history did. Horse Back riding, archery, Krav Maga, gun competitions… My dad saw how sad I was when he said no to Karate… He decided instead to support me and it shaped all my hobbies for the rest of my life. Even tried to join the Army but got denied at MEPS.

Yes every person has a lifestyle and they give it to the kids. Mostly kids reject it. 9:00 School is meant to teach you to tolerate a traditional workplace. It's to create workers.
My kid has been to public schools and private schools. Private schools were much better. Smaller classes so she got more one on one time with the teacher when she didnt understand something. She still got to associate with other kids. The students were a lot kinder. I have had nothing but a good experience with private schools. Public schools are wild. Preteen kids inapropriately touching each other. Bullying is insane. Teachers dont have as much time to help the students who are slipping behind. Public schools need more teachers but it doesn't pay to be a public school teacher.
I had to live like this most of my childhood, but honestly their situation is nicer than mine was by a lot. That being said no kid should have to live like this. Its soooo debilitating and hinders your development. To this day I still don't feel well adjusted and struggle with a lot of things. My bed for years was a crate between the driver and the passenger seat of a class C RV. Another time my bed was that couch they showed next to the window. Your parents constantly guilt trip you and try to convince you that you're having fun and you like it, and the family is close. In reality I had no choices, no freedoms, and my needs, happiness, and comfortability were the absolute bottom of the priority list. It was honestly child abuse and I realize that more and more every day as I work through things.
I grew up in something similar to "van life" - my parents moved states every few months or so because my dad is an autist who can't get along with people/work colleagues who don't share his exact political views, so much so that he felt the need to uproot his whole life and run away as often as he could rather than tolerate them. My mother was a borderline nutso with a persecution complex, partly from her previous super abusive marriage, who was constantly fighting my father over the most trivial of things but otherwise liked to fuel his own persecution complex/dissatisfaction over menial shit. This of course resulted in new schools every few months - and for one stretch being homeschooled - during which I was constantly bullied for always been new and falling further and further behind in developing social skills and competency for it. Now as an adult, I have no friends and I wouldn't really know how to ever feel comfortable enough to make them, due to a PTSD response for just being approached by strangers. I had a 150+ IQ (who knows where it is now as my mind feels destroyed by loneliness and hormonal health issues), but it has never done me any good because I lack basic social skills - yet my clueless sociopath of a father is always going on about how I am "so smart" and can't understand why I am living off-grid with no achievements. So yeah, I totally agree on the take that this kind of shit usually fucks up people for life, and that it doesn't matter how intelligent you are in any other respect - if you are emotionally and socially stunted, that's it, your goose is cooked forever.
found a hobby and you can eventually found friends in this circle of hobbies. for example - learn another language. there are many discord services/some sites where you can talk with people (language exchange). I don’t know your hobbies/etc, but if you want to make friends, its good to be positive with people, it usually works.
My niece and her husband did van life for 1,5 year. 'Only' two children. They had an okay space. Everyone, including the rest of her family thought it was weird. Children aren't vaccinated... not even a surprise. They live in a house now.
What I can't stand is the disrespect on the part of the parents. It isn't just their fucking life and these children cannot consent. I don't ever put photos of my kids online. Family can request pictures sent directly via text or mail but never on social media or RUclips. These days there are easy ways to blur and edit out faces, like come on people!
Parents aren't that big deal, they're people just like any other, if they try to destroy your life or take advantage of you in any way, shape or form, you have to cut them off your life. That's hard to do, and most people that actually do it, only do when something very damaging happens. I tell this from experience, I'm the older son of my parents, and my parents were both the youger siblings in their family, so I had a really hard time growing up because of their life experience as a younger sibling. But what made me draw the line with them was when my mother took $62,000.00 from me and made a debt of $104,000.00 on my name and told me to fu** off when I confronted her. Her exact words were "you gave me the money because you wanted to, now deal with it, I cannot pay you and wont pay you, because in reality, I don't owe you anything and if I've ever owed you, I've already paid."
"Apartment" Rofl, my neighbors live in a 3room apartment, a dining room, living room and a bedroom, they have 5 kids, all 5 kids live in that dining room, 1 is 2 years old, number 2 is 4 years old, number 3 is 5 years old, number 4 is 8 years old, number 5 is 13 years old. You don't have to live in a van as a family or teenager to not have privacy, i bet he's considerably enjoying himself sleeping in the same room as all his brothers.
I shared my room with my brother pretty much our entire adolescent lives and even sharing the room with one person as a teenager can be too much if that person is a bit loud and inconsiderate. Which most kids are.
I gave my kids the nomad life with harsh anime training arcs and when they went to live in the city, they formed their own harems and friends they can trust and have become very successful and happy.
People need to let children be children, once you have a child your life isn't just about you, your life is about the child you brought into the world, you should put their needs first. (this is my personal belief as a mother.)

My sister, who I haven’t spoken to since 2018 (cause she’s crazy) is living this “van-life” with her narcissistic husband and 3 children.. they were living out of a car (in Canada) for a few years, but upgraded to a camper after my mother forked out the $10,000 they needed to upgrade. I knew her husband well, his mom was a drug addict, he was a drug addict, he’s got the drug induced paranoia, and dragged my sister into his madness. They believe themselves to be “Christians” but don’t get along with any other Christians, or anyone else at all for that matter. She’s cut herself off from everyone in her life, they believe themselves to be right about everything, and everyone else is “of the devil” and the world is against them. Their kids are 5, 3, and newly born.. he is a taper, but can’t seem to find any work (cause he thinks he is above working for reasonable wages) and ripped enough people off that he has ruined his name, and used God’s name to do it (a violation of the 3rd commandment) and hangs out on the side of highways bumming money while my sister and her 3 kids sit in the car, or I guess now the camper, with their wood burning stove that is probably leaking co2 into it.. it’s terrible and I feel SO bad for those kids, but what can I do if my sister chooses that life?! yeah also illegal to be homeless kind of. it's against the law to not have a adress and what's worse is you can't put your address on your brothers apartment either because you have to live there. i was homeless last year and god was it painfull dealing with the SOC. i got ignored for 2 weeks untill i wrote them an Email saying if i don't have a meating booked by next week i would come over there and burn the entire place down. then i got a meeting the next day. still took 2months to get any money and when i asked about help with my living condition they said SOC don't deal with that anymore. 3months later my friends 50year old junky dad who never worked a day in his life got a appartment and wellfare from them as soon as he contacted them. i was fucking 25years old last year. oh and it was durring november december. cold and wet AF.

When I was 12-13 my family went through genuine financial trouble and we were forced to live in a camper that was parked on my grandparents lawn. It's not a life style they chose so I don't hold any resentment for the years I grew up in there. Luckily my older sister moved out before we got into that situation So I was the only kid in the camper with my parents. In our first camper I did not have a room. I had bunkbeds that were apart of the wall. Think literally just holes in the wall. While they were much more spacious then the ones shown in the video. As someone who was just coming into my teens years, not having a bedroom really sucked. I had a curtain that I could close, however it felt really suffocating to have it closed so I never closed it. When we got our upgraded camper thanks to the help of some family members. I finally had gotten a separate room. I considered getting a bedroom as a Christmas gift. So I totally get the 15 year old girl hating her life, because of the lack of privacy.

I lived in a house with 3 bedrooms. 1 parent 6 kids all boys except the oldest who is a girl. The only one complaining she had to share her bedroom was the girl. And its also not a big deal. Like its for sleeping. If you want time on your own go outside.
I lived in the Philippines for almost 3 years. There are people over there with mud floors because of how often it floods. There is no reason to clean the floor, more diseased mud is coming soon. Others lived in "houses" made of bamboo and metal roofing for walls. They had it for the roof too. It was old used roofing so it had leaks and they had to catch water in bluckets and bottles.
In that camper you still lived better than 99% of the world. As poor as your family became they were still richer than 99% of the world. Being poor in America is like being a king in most places.
I grew up with a single mom. She was a terrible mom. A drug addict, an alcoholic, a whore, a woman who completely neglected me. But on the flip side, she neglected me, she didn't pay attention to me, she didn't force me to live in some shitty van, she didn't manipulate me into thinking I was a girl, she didn't go out of her way to abuse me, or control me, shit was simpler back in the day I swear...
Well anyway, my point being, having freedom was really important for me, as well as being able to stay in one area and "grow out my roots" so to speak. I feel really bad that many of those children won't have the same opportunities as I had. And I am literally the poster child of "wow tough luck on the parents you got". Believe me it’s good to have freedom than parents who are control freaks. My mother is such a control freak and manipulative that she makes my brother hating on my dad who actually worked hard provide for the family. i lived in a room were the ceiling was pannels you could push up so the rat shit fell on me all the time, it got to the point where i tacted a tarp over my ceiling but then it had to be cleaned regularly.

I have to say, one of the worst things about the human condition is how difficult it is to actually express your real feelings to people you have a connection with because you're afraid they won't care, resent you, gaslight, or otherwise manipulate you. Like there's a level of social complexity to life that I think most people don't understand and aren't prepared for, or the other person is just really toxic and you can't separate yourself from them.
RV stands for recreational vehicle. None of these are meant to be lived in. A single person or a couple maybe.. But a family with multiple pets... smh

I grew up unwillingly in a 5th wheel camper for 8 years with my mom, brother, and 2 big dogs. My girlfriend brought up camping recently and my immediate response was, “No.” I’m used to sleeping in Walmart parking lots and jumping camp sites because we couldn’t afford it, and I refuse for me or my children to ever experience that again. I have too much trauma from that lifestyle to ever go back. It’s only “camping” or a “vacation” if the camper isn’t your primary residence. Otherwise it’s classified as homelessness per Section 725 of Subtitle VII-B of the McKinney Vento Act.
I used to live in an rv with 7 other people, not for views but genuinly cuz we couldn't afford a house or apartment, and it was actually a living hell. I was 10 at the time, so i wasn't particularly at the age where I needed privacy, but I did have to share a room with five people (including me) we had a "compost" toilet that stunk so badly everyday that we literally had to spend most of the day outside, the compost toilet needed to be changed everyday with a trash bag, and you literally had to carry it a hundred feet till you reached the dumpster. The RV was so tiny you couldn't fit four adults in it, let alone 6 kids and two adults. No hate against my parents, they were really struggling at the time, but looking at vloggers like this makes me think back on how suffocating my own experience was, I can't even imagine it being online for everyone to see, not to mention having to pretend I liked it...
Moral of the story: never force your kids to live in a hellish environment for view, actually, don't vlog your kids PERIOD...

It's difference between parents who love their children and who obsessed with themself and their lifestyle I guess. But most often, unfortunately, the exception confirms the rule.
Tbh, pushing your lifestyle onto your kids pretty much is what parenting is. Everyone tries to instill their values onto their kids as they should. But you certainly can go too far with that, as the kids still need some autonomy over their lifestyle. Parent that doesn't push any kind of values onto their kids is not even a parent.
Not really arguing against you as I doubt you claimed otherwise, but the internet's tendency to declare any kind of rugged lifestyle that involves children as immediate child abuse ticks me off a bit. Even in this video some of the points were kinda meh while others were more legitimate issues, like the "not having big enough desk for schoolwork" is kind of a stretch. They aren't med students, how large of a desk does a 9 year old need?
Or how cleaning up a pet cage is unsuitable task for a child. If that is child abuse, then no wonder the kid will get PTSD for having to unclog a toilet as an adult. Kids doing something that makes them slightly uncomfortable is not child abuse. That's teaching them how to deal with the not-so-nice aspects of life. For as long as you don't go overboard with it and the kids aren't like 5.

Some parents accommodate for their children instead. If they think they lived a hard life growing up, they would choose not to let their kids go through the same thing. I'm in the firm belief that once you've become a parent, your life is not your own anymore. For every major decision you make, the children always has to be in the picture not as an accessory, but as living beings each with their own needs and wants.

when i was young my parents and i went gamping witha camper van every single summer, what those people don't get is that the van isn't "to live in" but rather "to sleep in"
we spent all the time at the beach, going around cities watching monuments, visiting cities
the van had a huge tend attatched that more than doubled the size available, where we put folding chairs and a table to have meals, read, play, for me to do homework etc...
the van is meant to: sleep, go to the bathroom, have the frige and a stove to cook (since we mostly used it in the summer we didn't even shower inside)
the idea of using one to live inside all year round and to actually live inside all day long is crazy to me, for reference, if a prison gave you that much space to live in it would be considered a crime against human rights

Living in a camper or RV as a couple is much different than raising a family in one. My parents live in a camper full time and I (adult) tag along with them on trips. It’s a ton of fun but doesn’t come without its challenges. Your basic needs are dependent on others. For example, I am a night owl and need an extra hour or two of sleep compared to my parents. My stepdad is a big dude. He wakes up at 5-6 AM and the entire camper shakes. If they have a conversation (even whispering) you can hear all of it. It’s impossible to get a decent rest. Being tired and cranky all of the time is exhausting. That’s not even diving into the other aspects such as the bathroom situation. I’d love to have my own camper. I don’t have kids and love to travel. Those vehicles aren’t meant to be lived in full time but you can make it work for 1-2 people.
growing up i knew a kid who was dragged rv camping with her parents every single weekend when it was warm out and they HATED it. i feel so bad for the kids stuck doing it year round

My father is a strict vegetarian, and for 7 years is a strict vegan. But he never forced us to eat the way he does - which I am grateful for, I might have hated him if he made us all grow up as vegans forcing us to eat only what he wanted to eat. So I cannot imagine being forced to live on the road because your parent likes living on the road.🤦🏽♀️

@@basillah7650 No, we eat at the same time. On the same table. He even cooks meat for us on days my mother does not feel like cooking. His food is just made apart so it can stay perfectly vegan. My father is not a tryant. He is a father. We even go out to restaurants and if he can’t find anything vegan on the menu (a rarity with how accommodating establishments are nowadays) he just waits till after to get himself something.

I knew a family that had 11 Kids and they lived in two run down campers. They just didn't have the money to afford too much, even though the father and eldest children worked really hard to provide for the others. From what I heard last they now have a house and are doing really well.

@FullmentalAlcoomist 10 children used to be pretty common in the past. Now, you can make the argument that it was due to high mortality rates, and that modern standards makes this superfluous. However, many countries are suffering from low birth rates with many people being childless. If you would be a good father and can support that many children (not saying anyone in the video is) then it's a good idea in my opinion to have a large family.

this is one of the biggest reasons for sibling rivalry too; when resources are spread thin amongst many family members. i come from a family of 9 and the amount of unhappiness. anger. frustration etc. all becaus. we dont have the same amount of belongings or resources (one person has earbuds while noone else does or 1 person has a device while no one else does, or 1 person eats one too mnany chicken etc) leaving us all unhappy. many people are blind that more kids = more people = more LIVING COST. being selfish just because you want to be known as the biggest family etc. is not justifyable in my book ever. absolute horrendous parenting, seen it many times in other areas outside of "van life". good video, agree with the reaction/takes.

I wasn't an RV kid, but my parental guardians were pretty close to this. no privacy, do as i say environment, helicopter parented, surrounded by half siblings constantly and guilt tripped into helping my needy mom and grandma that displayed selfish parental behavior. staying in a hoarder house with animals that disgusting. now that I'm 31 now my family wonders why I am anti social and want to be left the hell alone.
The thing is, most of these RV parents spend a lot of the day telling the kids how "special" and "different" this lifestyle is, and spend the whole time telling them what they have that other kids don't. Its almost cultish in the way that they make the kids feel like "why would you complain, this is amazing, you'd be ungrateful if you wanted a NORMAL life!" as if an RV life is the equivalent of growing up a millionaire.

As a father of 2 kids, my kids are not online of any sort. I do not put any photos of my kids up for the world to see, nor does my wife. I told my parents to keep them off of Facebook and man did they take it bad. Don’t care though. They’re my kids.

4:53 grew up on a farm breeding, raising, training, and selling horses. We worked all summer long, fixing fences, getting the horses in the bar to brush down, bathe, or treat etc. Many would consider the amount of work we did would be crazy to the average childhood but the trade off what a unique experience and lifestyle that other are way to quick to be jealous of. Considering we always had food, new experiences, traveling experience going on trail rides or horse shows etc. My parents tried to provide many new experiences with martial arts, volunteering, and any sport we asked to play. We all played basketball, baseball, football, soccer, track, etc. I hardly got to go to others houses, or have people over (they don't enjoy working when visiting lol). Lucked out in my teens when the business lost momentum and it became a family hobby which meant down sizing from 20+ horses to like 8 and mostly letting them pasture grass instead of pulling them in to groom them for horse shows or selling. We had a garden to take care of daily, troughs to water, and every week we needed to jump on the tractor and put out hay. I started to hangout with a buddy close by and we played Halo all the time. I'd go back just to do chores before going back to his house. So I got some freedom for awhile. Then again I only visit once a year and hate that state now

There's definitely a right way and a wrong way to homeschool. It's not an excuse to be lazy. It's the opposite. Do your damn research on what functioning adults need to be independent and then interdependence in life. There are homeschooling groups that provide the resources to make sure you are covering all the necessities for higher education, and to supplement the things that are harder to get in a homeschool setting, like regular conversation, socializing, and relationship skills. Homeschooling is a great option if you commit to taking it seriously.
I like the idea of podschooling. The kids get the focused attention of homeschooling but also the social experiance from being in a group.

The thing he said about the kids not being seen as a separate person is exactly the opposite. It’s because parents see their kids as objects, pets basically, that they try to push these things on them and control their lives. If they actually saw them as extensions of themselves (respawns in a video game) then they would treat their kids with respect and treat them how they would want to be treated by having a certain amount of freedom while also being given safety and security.

Old houses with basement toilets tend to have curtains installed since they aren't actually furnished bathrooms, there's nothing wrong with that. But in their case (Vans/RVs) there's also a total lack of space, separation of rooms, privacy, etc., making basic everyday amenities ten times worse
It's funny, when someone is walking they can see everything trough the upper slit in the blinds. Even someone climbing on the bed above could see everything.

As somebody who spent half their life living in shoe box of a motel room with 5+ family members because we lost our house this baffles me. These families clearly have money but subject their kids to a lifestyle where they live like sardines in a can, constantly moving around, 0 privacy from the family or even from the internet. If it wasn’t for social media I highly doubt these parents would unironically do this lifestyle. Can’t imagine what these kids deal with when the phone/camera isn’t rolling
My uncle's family (my mom's sister's husband) is a military family from the countryside. He had to move about once every 2-4 years... and once out of the service, he got a high profile accounting position to support a larger family of 6. None of my cousins had ever been able to sustain any form of meaningful relationship until way later into their teens because their dad was able to find a settled down job. Most of them have social anxiety because they had to adjust to different social cues across America, racism, city and country life, and the lack of being able to fit in.
If my cousins who had such such shaky childhood grew up this way, I can't imagine what it's like to be a kid whose entire life lives on the road, never able to make friends, have a routine familiarity with the world outside the vehicle, and the lack of privacy when they want to get away from it all.
What these parents are doing has good intentions because they want to expose their kids to the variety the country has to offer... I get it. But to be a parent, it's not about what you want for your kids, it's doing your best to help your kids become what they want to be. Often times it's hard to find a balance of asserting parental control and giving your kids autonomy, but these kinds of people forgo that entirely to a sickening degree.
My parents moved ever 3-4 years since I was in kindergarten to university and the biggest impact is how socially awkward and introvert I am. I was never able to form stable relationship ever, since people to me just feel like visitors and it was back when the internet is still a thing for nerds. I ended up not being able to remember real people's names faces, and become socially awkward and anxious in populated areas, as if I'm not supposed to be there.
If you want to teach the kids about the country, then take a week to take them on a trip to different parts of the country once or twice a year. You have more than 10 years, thats at least 20 trips.

The largest detriment and abuse to these kids is depriving them of social circles and friends. We are at our core social creatures more than anything else, and consistently socializing with others your age is a need. You will be at an insurmountable disadvantage for the rest of your life if you don’t learn how to interact in communal social settings. It’s literally abusive to deprive them of the need for social interaction with other children that aren’t their own siblings.

This amount of space is no different than how families in the old west grew up, in the 1800's and earlier. Tiny one-room log cabins with bunk beds is how whole families would live. Larger families than these here because they had like 5 or 6 kids usually. Tiny furniture, tiny beds, tiny tables, tiny everything. And no internet, Netflix, movies, or video games. No money. Just work and school and doing chores around the house/farm. That was normal for thousands of years all over the world. The kids got to move out when they got married and moved in with their spouses and started their own family. By comparison this Van Life stuff would have seemed incredibly luxurious and amazing in every way.

My parents decided to care about what I wanted and it changed my life. My dad wanted me in soccer. He didn’t want me to do martial arts cause he thought I’d get in fights at school and it’s all I wanted. I finally got him to buckle and he put me in TaeKwonDo… ended up doing TaeKwonDo, Brazilian Jiu Jitzu, Korean Sword, Wrestled in high school, went on to do anything warriors in history did. Horse Back riding, archery, Krav Maga, gun competitions… My dad saw how sad I was when he said no to Karate… He decided instead to support me and it shaped all my hobbies for the rest of my life. Even tried to join the Army but got denied at MEPS.

My kid has been to public schools and private schools. Private schools were much better. Smaller classes so she got more one on one time with the teacher when she didnt understand something. She still got to associate with other kids. The students were a lot kinder. I have had nothing but a good experience with private schools. Public schools are wild. Preteen kids inapropriately touching each other. Bullying is insane. Teachers dont have as much time to help the students who are slipping behind. Public schools need more teachers but it doesn't pay to be a public school teacher.
I had to live like this most of my childhood, but honestly their situation is nicer than mine was by a lot. That being said no kid should have to live like this. Its soooo debilitating and hinders your development. To this day I still don't feel well adjusted and struggle with a lot of things. My bed for years was a crate between the driver and the passenger seat of a class C RV. Another time my bed was that couch they showed next to the window.
Your parents constantly guilt trip you and try to convince you that you're having fun and you like it, and the family is close. In reality I had no choices, no freedoms, and my needs, happiness, and comfortability were the absolute bottom of the priority list. It was honestly child abuse and I realize that more and more every day as I work through things.
I grew up in something similar to "van life" - my parents moved states every few months or so because my dad is an autist who can't get along with people/work colleagues who don't share his exact political views, so much so that he felt the need to uproot his whole life and run away as often as he could rather than tolerate them. My mother was a borderline nutso with a persecution complex, partly from her previous super abusive marriage, who was constantly fighting my father over the most trivial of things but otherwise liked to fuel his own persecution complex/dissatisfaction over menial shit. This of course resulted in new schools every few months - and for one stretch being homeschooled - during which I was constantly bullied for always been new and falling further and further behind in developing social skills and competency for it. Now as an adult, I have no friends and I wouldn't really know how to ever feel comfortable enough to make them, due to a PTSD response for just being approached by strangers. I had a 150+ IQ (who knows where it is now as my mind feels destroyed by loneliness and hormonal health issues), but it has never done me any good because I lack basic social skills - yet my clueless sociopath of a father is always going on about how I am "so smart" and can't understand why I am living off-grid with no achievements. found a hobby and you can eventually found friends in this circle of hobbies. for example - learn another language. there are many discord services/some sites where you can talk with people (language exchange). I don’t know your hobbies/etc, but if you want to make friends, its good to be positive with people, it usually works.

My niece and her husband did van life for 1,5 year. 'Only' two children. They had an okay space. Everyone, including the rest of her family thought it was weird.

What I can't stand is the disrespect on the part of the parents. It isn't just their fucking life and these children cannot consent. I don't ever put photos of my kids online. Family can request pictures sent directly via text or mail but never on social media or RUclips. These days there are easy ways to blur and edit out faces, like come on people!

Parents aren't that big deal, they're people just like any other, if they try to destroy your life or take advantage of you in any way, shape or form, you have to cut them off your life. That's hard to do, and most people that actually do it, only do when something very damaging happens. I tell this from experience, I'm the older son of my parents, and my parents were both the youger siblings in their family, so I had a really hard time growing up because of their life experience as a younger sibling.
But what made me draw the line with them was when my mother took $62,000.00 from me and made a debt of $104,000.00 on my name and told me to fu** off when I confronted her. Her exact words were "you gave me the money because you wanted to, now deal with it, I cannot pay you and wont pay you, because in reality, I don't owe you anything and if I've ever owed you, I've already paid."
"Apartment" Rofl, my neighbors live in a 3room apartment, a dining room, living room and a bedroom, they have 5 kids, all 5 kids live in that dining room, 1 is 2 years old, number 2 is 4 years old, number 3 is 5 years old, number 4 is 8 years old, number 5 is 13 years old.

I shared my room with my brother pretty much our entire adolescent lives and even sharing the room with one person as a teenager can be too much if that person is a bit loud and inconsiderate. Which most kids are.
I gave my kids the nomad life with harsh anime training arcs and when they went to live in the city, they formed their own harems and friends they can trust and have become very successful and happy.
People need to let children be children, once you have a child your life isn't just about you, your life is about the child you brought into the world, you should put their needs first. (this is my personal belief as a mother.)
None of these kids will know what it means when they become adults and one of the local tweakers asks to "borrow" their phone

My sister, who I haven’t spoken to since 2018 (cause she’s crazy) is living this “van-life” with her narcissistic husband and 3 children.. they were living out of a car (in Canada) for a few years, but upgraded to a camper after my mother forked out the $10,000 they needed to upgrade. I knew her husband well, his mom was a drug addict, he was a drug addict, he’s got the drug induced paranoia, and dragged my sister into his madness. They believe themselves to be “Christians” but don’t get along with any other Christians, or anyone else at all for that matter. She’s cut herself off from everyone in her life, they believe themselves to be right about everything, and everyone else is “of the devil” and the world is against them. Their kids are 5, 3, and newly born.. he is a taper, but can’t seem to find any work (cause he thinks he is above working for reasonable wages) and ripped enough people off that he has ruined his name, and used God’s name to do it (a violation of the 3rd commandment) and hangs out on the side of highways bumming money while my sister and her 3 kids sit in the car, or I guess now the camper, with their wood burning stove that is probably leaking co2 into it.. it’s terrible and I feel SO bad for those kids, but what can I do if my sister chooses that life?! Bruh.. 🤦♂️
LAN parties back in the day with WoW and counterstrike cramped in a room with 3 friends it was fun but going back home and getting space after the weekend was definitely a vibe 😂
