- ROUNDABOUTS , GEARS AND CLUTCH CONTROL. Todays driving lesson tutorial we are driving on roundabouts, what gear I recommend you should be using on the approach to the roundabout and what gear you should be in whilst on the roundabout and when to do up to a higher gear after exiting the roundabout. I cover roundabouts on the approach to go left taking the first exit, to go ahead on the roundabout to take the second exit and to go right on the roundabout to take third exit. Whilst approaching the roundabout I check to your right for approaching traffic, for that's who we will give-away to at the roundabout . I cover which mirrors to use on the approach to the roundabout and what mirrors you should be checking whilst on the roundabout and which way to signal, in forming the cars around you what your intentions are.
A well as having a camera pointing ahead at where we are driving, I have a camera pointed at my feet during the video because I want you to see what my feet are up to. So on the approach to roundabout you can see when I come off the gas pedal and cover the brake pedal to start to slow down on the approach. I talk about the clutch pedal and when I am using the clutch pedal and how slow I am lifting the clutch pedal off after changing the gears.

this was EXACTLY the video i needed!! you just repeatedly doing various exits at several roundabouts, downshifting from different speeds and gears whilst talking through it and with cameras at your feet!!! perfect video thank you so much
Happy the video helped. Safe driving
this video was so helpful!! i usually struggle with preparing early so this is very good to learn how to gradually approach a roundabout, as i have my test tommorow!
Thank you for watching
Did you passed your test? 😌
Being in Milton Keynes your students must love having Roundabouts everywhere lol
If they don’t I remind them it’s better than traffic light.
Very useful video for me. Doing my lessons at the moment and always get nervous/struggle approaching the roundabout and also changing gears quickly down to second. This helped a lot. Thanks!
Safe driving
Same. Cannot seem to get slow enough going into second even though it feels OK i keep being told I've gone onto second too quick. It's doing my head in.
Maybe the best demonstration on roundabouts on RUclips. Just passed but I'm always learning.
Wow, thanks!
Roundabouts, watching for others who don't indicate, finding your time to go, pull away in the right gear, change gear, indicate. Leave.
This video is very helpful to make sense of the above. Change from 1-2 just before the bend, then indicate.
Happy it helps. Safe driving
Good luck to everyone starting their driving lessons this week.
Thanks for sharing Travis
Thank you for watching. Safe driving
Thank you so much for this video, one thing I struggle with is just being confident with when I can go and not hesitating and also when to come back down to second, I suppose it’s just practice 😊
You're so welcome!
This is so helpful - thank you!
Thank you for your kind comment.
thank you for such a clear video
Thank you for watching. Safe driving
Not usually one to post comments, but I felt it was really important for me to express my gratitude for this video particularly, as well as your other driving content. One of the final things I needed to nail before my test was my approach to roundabouts - I was approaching too quickly and found it difficult to change to the right gear and make a decision. Watching you helped me tremendously: to understand when to check my mirrors and signal, how and when to slow down, change to 2nd, and then have enough time to make decision about when to stop and when to go. I did about 8 roundabouts on my test and I was able to approach them confidently and comfortably thanks to you. I'm really proud and happy to say I passed first time! Thank you so much
That is great news, happy the videos helped. Congratulations and safe driving.
Very good demonstration, thanks.

Yes a lovely day past Willen lake
Very helpful video thank you very much. 😊

Great tips, I love commentary driving
Thank you for watching and your kind comment. Safe driving
Very helpful, I just got my licence, but I barely encountered roundabouts while learning. Now my work's new office is at the end of a road with about a dozen roundabouts, it's so stressful.
Happy to help. Safe driving
This was such a detailed and amazing video! Thank you, I actually feel like I can tackle them confidently.
Good luck on the roundabouts and feel free to checkout my playlists on roundabouts and spiral roundabouts. Safe driving
@@JamesTravis thank you! I meant to reply earlier. I passed my test on the 2nd of May first time with only 2 minors, one of those being my back tyre being an inch over the parking bay line, the other slight hesitation at the roundabout.
@@JamesTravis your videos saved me. Thank you 😊

Excellent
Very helpful video thanks you
Glad it was helpful!
Great video thank you! I was having trouble understanding what speeds to get to before downshifting, what gear to be in different situations and generally what order to do everything in. Question, my instructor recommends that I can take certain roundabouts in third if I can see what's coming and am at the right speed, would you say this is good advice or is always coming down to second a good habit to get into? Thanks
I would not recommend 3rd for a novice learner. But if you are confident and know what to do then it is ok if clear.
Thanks boss, i dont know if you already made a video on this or not but how to get best mpg when driving
Will do soon
@@JamesTravis apprieciate it 🙂
Hey, great video. I’m wondering why sometimes you go into 1st or 2nd gear when you approach the roundabout?
Thanks for watching.
I tend to approach most roundabouts in 2nd, then it gives you more time to work out if it is safe to go or slow down and give way.
I also you 1st on if I am about to give way but manage to find a gap at a slow speed to continue. I would not encourage a learner to always use a higher gear because if you suddenly have to stop, the car behind you would not be able to stop.
Great video! I wanted to ask when I down gear sometimes I feel like the car speeds up despite breaking enough and bringing the clutch up slowly. Could you advice me on what I can do in such situations? Thanks
When you are on clutch the car will speed up unless the brake controls the speed. It could be that you are coming off the brake when changing gears.
@@JamesTravis that would make sense but I do brake before before I put the clutch down to make sure the car speed matches the gear change but it’s only sometimes I feel that maybe I am taking the foot of the clutch too soon/not braking enough hence the “speed” ?
When you change down to 2nd gear are you bringing up the clutch slowly to reduce the speed? And if you notice to come a car you push back down and change to 1st ? I hope I understand well. Thank you for your videos and patience with learners.
Yes is the answer to all of your questions. Firstly bring the speed down with your brakes then yes to bringing up clutch to adjust engine speed and stop judder.
Thank you Travis. I try to learn the best technic plus the easiest because I am beginner driver. I appreciate for your time and answer.
I haven’t started big roundabouts yet, but how does going from 5th to 2nd work? Would you not be going too slow for fifth if it’s the correct speed for second, or does the brake help with that?
Not sure I explained well😂
Would your car not shake going so slow in 5th?
You bring your speed down on approach to change down from 5th to 2nd. As the speed gets to around 25mph you start to lower the clutch
One of my weaknesses even after passing is speed on approach to roundabouts and I haven't driven for 3 years besides a refresher lesson in last few weeks and hoping to get back into driving next year, so this video should be quite helpful. Sorry if it seems like a daft question but what does the side mirror check at 1:16 ish achieve? I know it's part of the routine but it's physically impossible to someone have undertaken really in the time from you checking middle mirror when approaching the give way line slowing down and coming to a stop or carrying on
You will be surprised to know that lots of drivers will take risks around you.
Sometimes a driver will find themselves in the wrong lane at a roundabout and still try to go where they want, even if it means a near accident on your left side.
Hopefully you will spot this happening as you are checking your left mirror and avoid it.
@@JamesTravis oh, yes, I was watching another person's video and they mentioned it's more important for the larger roundabouts (where I can see that kind of thing happening) and so I guess it's good for it to be habit even on the smaller ones, even if it feels a tad unnecessary if you know what I mean.
@@Stallzyx yes definitely
brilliant video i struggle with anxiety , but i can drive i just don't have the confidence. last week i had a shocking driving lesson. so frustrating please can you give me some tips.
Hi,
Set yourself two goals to improve from the start of your next driving lesson. Half way through the driving lesson, assess the goals and if you have matched or bettered them, set one more.
@@JamesTravis thank youuuuu
Hello, thank you so much for this helpful video but I have got a question. When we are breaking and changing from 3rd to 2nd gear before, can you still apply a bit of break to the car while finding the bit point to 2nd gear?
Yes
5th to 2nd gear on the approach to roundabouts. My instructor gets me changing 5th to 4th to 3rd then 2nd. It's a lot to do and I get frustrated trying to get to 2nd in the short space of time I have to stop at the roundabout.
The DVSA encourages block gear changing. You won’t be marked down for going 5,4,3 then 2. But if you are running out of time then bringing your speed down and skipping gears to 2nd is better and saves time.
@@JamesTravis Thanks Mr T. That's a great help 👍🏾
A compromise is 5 to 3 then 3 to 2 or 1. This system alows a change from slowing to speeding back up again if circumstances dictate a change of plan.
Thank you very much, I found this video very helpful and gave it a like. Just today I was practising driving and I was on 3rd gear 15-20mph on approach. Hence I took a very Quick glance assuming it’s clear and instructor emergency breaked since I was going too fast to notice a car on my right, that I was gonna hit 😨
When mistakes happen it’s a learning thing. Good luck with your driving lessons
What speed should i drive while on roundabout on a test
This just saved me
Safe driving
helpful
Glad to hear that
Is it ok to keep the clutch down in gear 2 when approaching the roundabout and then change to gear 1 when stopped instead of raising it and then putting it down again for gear 1 before stopping?
Second part is correct
Is it ok if you can explain what speed a car can be slowed down from each gear before it starts to rumble or stall? For example if I slow down from sixth gear can I go lower than 30mph before the car stalls?
This might help

@@JamesTravis thanks. Does the car struggle as much at higher gears like lower gears?
My driving teacher is horrible and is always screaming and complaining. He would never tell me what i did wrong, with this video though, i have a better time understanding the traffic, even though i live in Norway and we drive at the right side of the road
Happy the videos are helping. Safe driving
Can you please let me know ASAP so that I can get my daughter back to a gear car i have taught her that when she is coming up to a roundabout at 40 mph in 4 is it ok to go 3rd to 2end and not miss 3rd or is that not allowed now
Hi, the DVSA recommend block changing down gears in newer cars(going from 4 to 2 or 5 to 3 or even 2). It saves time and effort.
But if you teach your daughter to go 4, 3, ,2, 1 with the gears, you will be ok as long as in between gears she is off the clutch and hands and back on the wheel.
I have a Q - when I change down from 3rd to 2nd at about 20mph for turns my car jerks quite harshly, how do I do It smoothly, without needing to go slow down to 10-12 mph.
You need to lift the clutch off a lot slower
@@JamesTravis This was the answer I needed. Just passed test. Also, do you pause/hold your foot on the bite point, then lift off the clutch slowly (e.g. when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd)?
I’ll ask a question tomorrow from my instructor cause she keeps telling me clutch down even the roundabout was cleared .
Instead I can just cover it if someone is coming then clutch down I’m confused. 😐
Yes ask your instructor to explain.
I struggle to decide when to select first gear and when to continue with second gear using the clutch so it doesn't stall .
If your speed is going to drop below 5mph, then select 1st.
@@JamesTravis and if my speed is around 6-8 do I have to use the clutch to mentain the second gear without stalling ?

Im having a problem i've done like 13+ lessons and my instructer doesn't seem to trust me at roundabouts is always helping me out even tho i don't need it but then when we finish the lesson he says everything was good, it almost feels like he doesn't trust me and after 13 lessons im sure i can do roundabouts by myself..
Try asking your instructor to not help you on the next 3 roundabouts and then park up and both of you talk about how it went.
How many gear ur car have?
5 gears
5:55
3:38
at 1:10 you change gear to 2nd without giving it gas. So giving gas when changing gears is not always required? Thanks
Yes you do not need the gas when changing gears.

America don't have roundabouts do they.
I think they don’t, but I could be wrong.
We do, but not many at all. And I’m sure it varies from city to city, but we have a lot of four way intersections and stoplights!
