The best driving instructor on RUclips. My instructor pretty much gave up with me in the middle of my 2nd lesson, saying that I shouldn’t be driving manual due to me not grasping gears and clutch control. Bearing in mind I’ve only been driving for a total of 3 hours. Hoping I find someone like you in South Wales.
Don't worry, you will get there! Try approaching it from different sides. I could not do anything at all with the gears until I learned hoe the gears look like inside the car and what mechanics is behind them.
Hi Richard, not sure if you're going to see this but I want to say a big thank you. I passed my test first time yesterday. The week before my test I started binge watching your videos and especially this one, helped me immensely. I have always found myself coasting when approaching junctions, as I didn't know how to brake while lifting the clutch up after changing gears. The hour before my test, I practiced holding the brake while lifting the clutch, and it worked like a charm. The two stage stop method helps a lot too. I used these skills during my test and it's one of my nicest drives. Your videos about test nerves also helped profoundly. Now that I've passed my test, I am still binge watching your videos - your heel toe technique, driving in snow, driving in night, car comparisons etc videos, they're all very informative. Thank you very much, you're really making a difference here.

You given me the best advice for learning how to change gears while approaching junctions and roundabouts, I need to make sure to keep my foot on the break while changing to second/first gear.
I did that on my driving test day. Was the last downhill before the end of the track, a steep downhill. There was a lady crossing the street, I did brake and pressed that red hazard button, but I lifted up the brake pedal while clutching down. I felt that and immediately braked again and said "I am sorry for releasing the brakes while clutch". The examiner gave me 2 minors for that. But at the end of the day, I passed. I was very happy that day. Nice video and thank you very much Richard Instructor.

I was taught to change gear with the flat of my palm, wrist turned in the appropriate direction, fingers open. That makes it very hard to miss a gear, including in unfamiliar vehicles, or even crash gearboxes. With experience I've become less strict, but the principle remains.
I'm an experienced driver in Canada and this man as addressed soo many nuances for when it comes to driving manual for me. There is always refinement to be made later on even as a 8 year driver.
When I'm rev matching rather than judge only by the sound I use my peripheral vision of the position of the needle on the tachometer to judge it. I find this quite helpful. Great video as always!
Richard! Thanks you of the wonderful information and guide you provided about approaching Junctions... I watched your video many times before i went for my driving test. This really helped me to pass my Test Today. Thank very much.
I will be clear and presise. Thanks for all your videos. It really helped me to become very confident on the road and to improve myself to become a better driver.
My instructor is very unclear and quickly runs out of patience. All I've learned about driving is with your videos. Super clear and easy to understand.
Had a week out from lessons currently here trying to refresh my memory on downshifting for junctions lol , really helped, even picked up some extra tips with finding the biting point on the downshift , cheers
I love your videos. I passed my test 2 weeks ago and I've had my car for 5 days and I find going down gears at roundabouts/junctions the most difficult. especially one roundabout in particular as I go/come from work and I keep doing the rushing/going into the wrong gear and it's frustrating me no end. I'm also quite anxious and I'm really hard on myself. I just need to build my confidence and hopefully it will come, but definitely gonna use your techniques to help me with that one roundabout. I'm so scared of crashing/hurting someone and I think the nerves just take over and that's why I keep making the same mistake. I will keep at it though. Thanks.
Congratulations on passing. Learning to take your time and not be pressured by others is an important part of learning and becoming a safe driver. With practice you can increase your confidence, try not to be discouraged and keep at it. You must be your own leader when driving, do not let other people push you. People still try to push me, these days it's like water off a Duck's back, I'm only interested in staying safe. Pleasing other road users is not my priority.
@@ConquerDriving thank you. Yeah it's definitely something I am working on. I need to stop letting other drivers pressure me. And I am working on it. Thank you for replying and the pep talk, it's definitely made me feel a bit better. I'll keep at it. Keep the videos coming, they definitely help me. 😁
@8:26 , it happens to me alot as a new/learner driver when approaching roundabout from high gear to 2nd gear, now i know how to change the gear down smoothly thanks to this instructor👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 worth to subsribe and highly recommended to share👌🏼
Great video again. The part about downshifting smoothly was very useful, I always made the car jolt, hopefully I get to put it to use when lockdown ends.
Really reallycomforted by the idea of being able to let my clutch go slowly and not having to rev match. I've seen so many other sources tell me that relying on my clutch to help me rev match will just wear it prematurely. I've been trying to rev match myself but it's a struggle for a new driver. Thinking that my bad driving damages my car puts me under so much stress that it makes me perform poorly! This will probably help me so much. Thank you. And even if it does wear the clutch out, at least it is replacable. (:
Using the clutch to rev match is exactly what it's designed to do. It doesn't generate much heat so therefore doesn't cause much wear. On the contrary, rev matching with the gas badly causes more wear, it's only better if you get it right. The majority of drivers use the clutch for rev matching. This video may be of interest: ruclips.net/video/e1nY8mpafqY/видео.html
5:03 My instructor told me to come off the brake when clutch down. They said “when the clutch is down, the brake does not work any more. Does it make sense?” After watching this video, I understand no matter I couldn’t slow the car to proper speed every time approaching junction or roundabout…😮
damnn, I need instructors like you where I live, I feel like I learn more watching these videos than I actually do in my lessons. Your actually a god send
I remember when I passed my test in my instructors car I could get into 1st gear alot sooner than I can in my car. I have to literally be stopped to choose 1st gear which Is what I'm used to now but it was strange for a few weeks not being able go into gear 1 even rolling up to a junction like I was so used to lol. Great video by the way 👍
In that case, just go into 2nd. It depends on the individual gear ratios of your car. If you have a smaller petrol car, the gear ratios are usually more towards the lower end which means the 2nd gear in that car has much more torque than the 2nd gear in more powerful cars, which mean you can use it on slower speeds. In my car, the 1st gear is basically only usable if you are stationary. When I'm rolling with 5 mph or more, I need to go into 2nd or higher.
4:15 Im a new driver and I also had issues at first with sometimes accidentally getting the wrong gear. A way around this I found is that you shouldn't put your hand directly ontop of the stick but rather a bit more to one of the sides, depending on the gear you want to switch to.
My instructor totally needs to hear that. He's making me do everything at once alrdy in my first second driving lesson and I feel dumbfounded and helpless all the time
My first instructor was making me change to second gear on roundabouts or on a turn on a 40mph road about 5 car lengths before the junction, this would always make me panic, and had barely any time to make proper observations, so I would either go without checking it was safe, or stopping on every roundabout, or stalling as I would find time to change gear only at the give way line. I did not learn much this way, and we kept repeating roundabouts every lesson with no progress. My new instructor lets me carry out the routine of mirrors, speed, gears much earlier than the junction, where I can snail pace at the roundabout, make effective observations and go with minimal hesitation. Sure, I am doing this routine too early, but as I improve my handling, i'll get it done quicker as you say.
You help me a lot, I wish you are my instructor but I follow your advice and my instructor today is surprised that I control clutch and go with 2 gear 🙏
Can't wait for this lockdown to end, starting work again soon, the jobs only until October, i need to pass my test before october so that i can stay on! Your videos are brilliant!
What I do when approaching a 90° turn is first break and push down the clutch. Then I second start taking the turn and hit the bite point on the clutch while heel to toeing the gas and break right around the middle to start of the turn to carry me through. By the end of the turn, I'm in third gear cause I've sped up by that time. I tend to take turns at like 20 to 30 miles an hour
I really needed this because today I made an exit from a freeway where I found a red traffic light which immediately turned green upon my arrival, I reduced from 5th to 2nd gear and the car still jolted and switched off & I started a bit of traffic & people were honking at me.
I’ve been guilty of going too high a gear on approaches at times. I’ve been making a habit of popping the car into second gear well in advance and it’s been making driving overall headache free and giving me that extra power needed to get moving off.
5:40 is literally the reason i failed my first test... i kept control the examiner thought i was going to go into the other lane of the road and reach for the wheel :( it made me so anxious for the rest of the test i kept leaving my indicator on and he said it wouldn't have been that bad if i hadn't made those other mistakes :'( but hopefully next time around i can make better decisions thanks to this video and won't have to go through those anxious mistakes again!

I've been learning to drive for about a week now and this is the exact problem I had! Thank you so much!
2:20 Yeah I did that, my instructor told me I was changing down to 2nd too early.
4:00 Too late surely?
4:50 Absolutely
Had a week out from lessons currently here trying to refresh my memory on downshifting for junctions lol , really helped, even picked up some extra tips with finding the biting point on the downshift , cheers
colling wood are the BEST driving insurance in London! non discriminatory against criminal records!!!
I am going to learn driving from tomorrow. Your videos are all the basics I needed.
5:03 My instructor told me to come off the brake when clutch down. They said “when the clutch is down, the brake does not work any more. Does it make sense?” After watching this video, I understand no matter I couldn’t slow the car to proper speed every time approaching junction or roundabout…😮
You have no idea how much I needed this video!!
Nice video + socks. Your videos helped me so much and I've managed to pass my drivers test a few days ago. Thank you so much :)
This has definfely helped, I've learnt a few things that I wouldn't have know otherwise so thank you
passed my test 3 weeks ago and I'm still watching these vids.
Congratulations on passing and thank you for watching!
Pretty sure I didnt get taught that I didn’t need to press gas when changing down gears and nothing about Rev matching thanks for your videos !
Dont listen to this guy. He telling you to downshift to first gear. You never downshift to first gear. You would damage your transmision
damnn, I need instructors like you where I live, I feel like I learn more watching these videos than I actually do in my lessons. Your actually a god send
Your vids are so good, i dont have to watch them to give you a thumbs up 👏👍👍👍💯
Lovely information you are one of the best driving instructors thanks a lot
That certainly does help.
Excellent explanation with great content. 5 stars out of 5.
My instructor totally needs to hear that. He's making me do everything at once alrdy in my first second driving lesson and I feel dumbfounded and helpless all the time
I'm sorry to hear that, maybe you should talk with him.
Thanks
Sir I am a learner and following your tips
Can't wait for this lockdown to end, starting work again soon, the jobs only until October, i need to pass my test before october so that i can stay on! Your videos are brilliant!
I really love this channel..... Supporting from Malaysia.🥰🥰
Thank you very much for your video sir I pass may driving test on the first attempt 🙏😇
That's great news, congratulations on passing!
Whooooooow! Great video as usual. Your a star!
This video has everything I was looking for! Thank you!!!
I really needed this because today I made an exit from a freeway where I found a red traffic light which immediately turned green upon my arrival, I reduced from 5th to 2nd gear and the car still jolted and switched off & I started a bit of traffic & people were honking at me.
This really helps! Big thumbs up! 👍🏼 I love watching your vlogs! Thanks a lot.
I have learnt a lot and still learning from you bro, thanks much
Great video with concise explanation, very helpful!
Thanks for the great video. My driving instructor is quite good but I wish he gave more tips like this.
These videos have helped me so much, thank you ❤
I love ur driving style big ups
wow.., now i see alot of my problems. Thanks man
this is very very helpful and for a learner absolutely amazing
I hope the video helps you and I wish you the best of luck for next time.
