That was interesting for me to figure out. Before I went behind the wheel for the first time, I knew that you had to carefully lift off the clutch when starting in first gear. And i thought, when shifting up, you could just release the clutch as quickly as you want. Well, feeling like a seal on land, I found out this is not true.

“During your driving lessons you aren’t going to get hugely skilful, you’re going to get skilful enough to pass a driving test”. Nailed it. Thank you so much, Richard! I feel like my driving instructor wants me to aspire to being a precision driver (and makes me do methods for changing gears and for manoeuvres that are way beyond my realistic skill level). All it does is increase the amount of mistakes I make, which undermines my confidence, and leads to even more problems.

Ah. Thanks for clarifying stuff about the clutch plate wear. Needed that. I drive like you. And recently I was being convinced that I'm wearing out the clutch plate. Phew..

Funny that I never learned this but kinda adapted to this way over the years without even noticing. It’s like a video game when the more you play it the better you get.

Last bit of this video was really helpful. I have habit of not being gentle with the gearstick

I hope it helps, the more start gently and gradually build pressure. If it's really stiff you may be trying to select the wrong gear for the speed.
