Arguably, this is the most important skill in driving a manual car!
True.
Try uphill and downhill parking
The most important 👏
What about being able to start the cat
I'm kinda impressed that I learned to do this EXACTLY the way he describes all on my own by having a standard for my first car and no one really to help me. I pretty much had figure it all out on my own.
If you were my math , science , physics, chemistry, history, geography teacher i swear i would have been the first in my class .
I really like your teaching style! Your really informative, pick up on common errors and provide solutions and alternatives in a really simple way. I cant wait to watch the rest of your videos now. Cheers x
Thank you!
Believe me he is the best
The note about the gas not controlling the speed was REALLY helpful. As I'm learning I have been really reluctant to up the gas when doing manoeuvres in case I shoot forwards. This is soo good to know!
You're absolutely amazing !!! I'm from India, and learning clutch control is so much essential here because of extreme traffic density. I watched your video at least 4-5 times and practiced clutch control which had immensely helped me gaining accuracy and command over it. Just like you said, lifting the clutch the same height as the thickness of a schilling gets the job done. I felt so related as I also used to make the same mistake of using it in reverse direction. Thanks a lot again for making this video.
You're welcome, I'm glad that I helped you.
Omg nobody told me about these details of gas + clutch pedals, so I was always confused when my instructor told me to add gas every time when I needed to move just a little bit because I thought I'd go too fast by adding gas! It's so important to know details like that to understand how to really control the car. Richard, you are the best!!!
Saaaaaaame now I finally understand😭😭😭
Accept Jesus Christ ❤
The point about the heel on the floor was SO helpful, my first instructor didn't explain it to me thoroughly soI always keep my heel on the floor trying to find the bite and the pedal position slips just as you explained - I only just realised from your explanation why this was happening! Thanks so much.
I'm happy to help.
Yeap currently I was learning hill start and first couple of times I stalled the car than instructor told me to keep heel on the floor and it helped a ton
I’m 24 & I just bought my first manual here in the U.S. & not a lot of people drive manual here anymore. This was super helpful, thanks!
You're welcome. I hope you enjoy your manual.
I'm 20 and I've just got my first manual too I got a 2004 jetta tdi and I love driving manual and ive only drove manual for like a week. And yeah people look at me like something is wrong with my car when I have a hard shift every now and then.
Your videos are like a Christmas present. I really enjoy watching your video, super easy to follow and explained well. You are the best x
Thank you!
That's good cos #BoJo has cancelled Christmas this year! 😔 #ChristmasCameEarly! 🎶 🎊
This is exactly what nobody ever explained to me ,I
passed the test(!?) ,got my licence and didn't drive for 18 years because I knew that I coudn't control the car at all.People say that I lack practise and I do,but also I was not told any of these things .I was paying for my lessons but it's expected to understand this on instinct.
Thanks for the information.😃
I hope the videos helps you become a better driver then.
I just want to say thank you man!
All my driving instructor did was yell at me when I asked how to go slow, so this was an incredibly useful video.
thank you.
Glad it helped!
As far as teaching driving online is concerned, you are the best teacher. I have learnt so much from your videos. Thank you so much.
I'm learning how to do this with not much success and it really affects my confidence.😭Small nudges to your clutch!! Now that's something I'll try next time. Thank you so much.
I just bought an old manual car and have been learning on the fly - these videos are a godsend. Hands down the best series on the basics of manual driving, with a fantastic instructor
Thank you ☺
You are the best teacher out there because you don't take anything from the learner's perspective for granted. You explain it! I wish Colchester was a bit closer :-)
👍👍
Thank you very much for this. Very helpful!
I did all the common mistakes you've mentioned during my last lesson and want to improve.
1. Prevent the clutch moving to the middle arch of foot and keep it steady by positioning the left heel on the floor once at bite point.
2. Moving the clutch: Up=faster, Down=slower
3. You can control the speed with clutch instead of gas.
Im taking down notes! 📝
Watching this and just now learning about the ECU. My instructor teaches me in a Kia Picanto that has an ECU, but I just bought my first car which is an '03 KA that most likely doesn't. Really glad I clicked on this
I literally use to face the problem with my heel slipping on the clutch!! This was some good advice!!🙏🏾🙌🏾
Thank you, I hope it helps.
Great video. I recently passed my driving test on the 11th December and have brought a 1 litre petrol car however I keep stalling it every time. I learnt in a Ford Fiesta 1.5 TDCi and never had any issues with moving off without stalling. It is really starting to knock my confidence now, do you have any advice?
You need to use gas before lifting the clutch. Take your time and keep at it. You'll get better.
Mr Fanders I can't thank you enough. I've been struggling with moving slowly for quite some time (totally new driver) and your video really helped. I used the clutch like you said instead of pressing on the gas and it was like magic was happening. I couldn't believe it.
Again thank you so much for this video🔥🔥🔥
This is a very important technique, especially in traffic jams when you do not necessarily need to stop completely.
Agreed!
Update: Got my freakin license, now i have to conquer one more thing, Driving alone in hiway xD.. Been practicing for months with someone and i got used to always have them by my side . btw wont this wear my clutch if i do it for a long time assuming im reving at 1500 rpm? i know clutch is made for that purpose but i can imagine the plate rubbin..
Good luck when you take to the road on your own. Yes, doing that for long periods of time at 1500rpm would start to overheat the clutch friction material. But once you're on the bite point the revs should come down to closer to 1000rpm. Also, when you're doing this you're continuously lifting and lowering the clutch, every time you lower it the temperature will drop so it will take a long time to over heat. You certainly have enough time to park.
I love your videos mate they're vey detailed and helpful, thanks and keep up your great work.
Thank you, I will try.
Thank you, now I can drive smoothly in Beamng Drive😂
By the way nice video, keep up the good work👍🏻
😂
New driver here, about 2 months in, learned Manual as a first time driver and I just want to say, learning Clutch control (Pretty much everything he mentioned here) is when I fully acknowledged the fact that I truly know how to drive manual. My car has an ECU, but I barely rely on it. Knowing how to do Clutch control to slow down and speed up is useful for almost anything. In any clutch scenario (Pun intended) like tight turns or going uphill and suddenly encountering something on your way up, using the clutch to control your speed is super helpful. Not to mention that in bumper-to-bumper traffic or stop lights this helps you get faster starts than doing Clutch-bite-point first, relying on the ECU to accelerate then adding gas later. This is 100% an essential skill for any manual driver, new or old, ECU or no ECU.
I am here after crashing the parked car, while my dad was teaching me
sorry to hear that
New Driver here so i recently just started my first day and first time of practicing driving and after practice ,i kinda feel like wanting to not drive again because of my fears, nervous on driving and tests but i do wanted to try go back but i just cant bring myself to do so and also these videos does help me alot learning about the clutch ,handbrakes and more :)
Take your time and take it slow. Gradually build yourself up, confidence comes after knowledge, skill and success.
I really wanted to hear what you will tell us about keeping slow and I’m not disappointed. My instructor told me a bit different approach - I learn in a car which doesn’t required extra gas at the start, so I’ve been told to keep one foot and the clutch and second one on the brake. Fully lock the wheel, find the bite point and slowly release the brake, holding the clutch steady and moving the wheel - basic rule is “fast hands, slow feet”. Well, it works as recently I am getting better with angle start, but... I keep in my mind that very important point you remind us all the time - to use some gas before finding the bite point. However it is easy to forgot about it, especially that our car even release the hand brake for me 😳 I’ve got a feeling that after passing my test and having my own car I’ll have to learn some things all over again as I’ll have different habits... unless I’ll buy similar car 😂 but I really don’t want to be a lazy driver from the other side 😉
That's true, you may need to learn some different techniques when you drive a different car. This is why I like to make sure my customers can drive any car. My car will also easily let you lift the clutch without gas. I get my customers to practise both methods.
I know and that is one of the reasons why I like your teaching methods soooo much 👍at the end of the course your clients have a broad knowledge and understanding of different cars and they are ready to go, no matter what they may buy - and this is superb 👍👍👍
Great video as usual.
Can you make a short video about buying a first car?
Mainly the things like buying insurance, taxing it, etc. What you need to do before you can (legally) drive it away, and how to do it.
Like... do you buy the car, then insure it via phone? Insure it before you buy it? What paperwork is involved? Etc.
Plenty of videos from other channels show what to look for in a first car, but not really much about the the "boring" paperwork.
Great idea, I will.
Sir, around 2:48 or during the demonstration, when you push the clutch down to slow down, are you coming off the gas fully? And then pressing it again when lifting clutch upto the biting point? Or are you just keeping the gas steady at one place when pushing and lifting clutch?
I tend to do a combination of both, I teach people to keep the gas steady and only use the clutch as it's easier and teaches them that the clutch controls the car at low speed, not the gas.
@@ConquerDriving we should l keep gas steady when pushing clutch in too, right?
you explain so clearly and make driving a manual car seem so easy! i wish i had you as my instructor! keep up the good work!!
Thank you!
Best driving channel on youtube. Thanks a lot, not only this one, but every video helps me so much!
Thank you so much, it's very nice to hear this.
I'm going to force my sister to watch this video lol l'm having a hard time making her master moving at slow speed.
I hope it helps.
Will this not burn the clutch? For example doing this in stop and go traffic daily?
At low rpm the clutch should not overheat. It would only burn the clutch if you gave too much gas or held the car for long periods (more than 3-5 seconds) on a hill using the clutch.
@@ConquerDriving thanks!
Hi im a new learning driver, my question is, is it ok to use the clutch biting point to control the engine at slow speed and using the break to stop the car at the same time? Scenario will be on a bumper to bumper traffic, and im only using 1st or 2nd gear clutch biting point to move the car slowly and using the break to stop it at the same time. Or do i need fully press the clutch first before using the breaks? and any advice on this situation. Thanks!
Best avoid using the bite point and brake at the same time. It puts strain on the car and stops you clutch skill improving. Downhill use brake with clutch down, uphill use clutch bite point.
Wow! thank you soo much Richard. I am from India and I am learning to drive four- wheeler. In just 13 days of driving, I had learnt everything except this. My dad is just yelling at me when I am trying to learn parking to go really slow. I was so frustrated at how can I go really slow. I very much appreciate your effort. It will really help me. Thank you, again. ❤️😀👍
I'm happy to hear I've helped.
this video was a GODSEND. thank you so much my guy 🙏🏾
Thanks for this super helpful video, I kept going for the brakes and accelerator out of muscle memory.
There’s also the fear or adding too much gas when it was the clutch that I had to control instead. Well explained 👌🏻
This is all very common, many people do exactly what you're doing, practise will get you there.
I am being taught to find the bite point with the engine idling. Im learning in a diesel but if i was to get a petrol as my first car will it stall each time
Not each time, no, but it's certainly more likely.
You won't be able to move off very quickly without adding some gas.
As proptart says, you will be more likely to stall. It depends on your car.
finding the bite point is such a pain for me especially considering the fact i can barely hear the engine which the car company actually brags about
What car are you driving i have an 8th gen civic si it is anything but quiet
Love from Uganda east Africa 🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬
Just had the most embarrassing driving lesson of my journey. I was practising manouevers and my car kept accelerating even though my foot was nice and steady on the clutch. This video is a lifesaver! I will try to implement the advice.
My driving instructor did not tell me what to do to control the car better. All she said was “you are losing control a lot today” and i kept asking is it because I am doing xyz? And she never told me what exactly is the problem.
First 1 minute of this video is exactly what was happening during my lesson.
I am glad to know I am not alone!
I hope it helps!
Really superb video bro@Conquer Driving bravo bro👏👏🔥🔥...btw when moving off manual car in order to listen the engine go up pitch and revs start to increase do we need to hold the gas still or keep pressing the gas pedal?
Thank you. Keep the gas steady, if you keep increasing the gas your clutch will have more and more work to do and you would maybe overheat it. Maybe increase it a tiny amount if you feel you're not getting anywhere.
@@ConquerDriving thanks bro and really appreciate your reply..👏👏😀😀
So I’m a bit confused. I watched another video where the guy explained the same thing... everyone in the comments said he’s riding the clutch? Would this be considered riding the clutch?
This is a situation where you're meant to "ride" the clutch. The clutch is designed to slip to allow you to move away smoothly and control the car at very low speeds. There is no getting round it without losing control or causing harm to your transmission. The clutch will wear quickly if you abuse it by slipping it with a lot of revs or holding the car still on a hill using the clutch. These two videos explain more: ruclips.net/video/0ZjSImbwo34/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/e1nY8mpafqY/видео.html
the biggest struggle of driving a manual car and nobody talks about it
The car I learned in I could hill start with just the clutch. When I passed and got my own car it needed tons of gas, it completely ruined me.
That's why it's important to learn how to move away with the gas too.
Thank you very very much my dear! It is too helpful.
Thank you ☺
Happened once to me. Soon lowered my clutch.
If we setting rpm 1100 as basic standard clutch is will good or bad...i found that way when we ideal without gear petrol consume much....am i correct pls help me....my car not picking when it has 800 rpm
You want at least 1100rpm for setting off. When you get the bite point with the clutch the revs will come down anyway. A good start will normally be 1500rpm.
Ride the clutch, there is no other way. edit: actually, you can use the handbrake (not the e-brake, wont work) so pull the handbrake then start moving the car. It's stupid but it works and somewhat damages the handbrake system.
Great video! It was really informative. I have a question - when you are using clutch control to do manoeuvres like forward bay parking, do you keep your foot on the gas pedal as well or is it the clutch and the brake you use for control? I hope that made sense.
Thank you so much for this you are a life saver. I took a day off from work today, because I am still traumatised by my bad driving experience. Yesterday I stalled 3 times in the middle of traffic the cars infront of me were moving at a low speed I couldn't slow down without completely stopping my car, I ended just crying.
I'm sorry to hear that, this video may help you and I have two more coming in June on the subject:
ruclips.net/video/0yKXFrpGAM8/видео.html
Thanks for the info ✌️. Can I do this when reversing also?
Absolutely!
Hi, I've just discovered your channel. Thank you for this. I'm experiencing difficulty when doing the alley docking, once I get the biting point and have to move my right foot to the accelerator. Do I have to use the brake or is it possible to only use the clutch and accelerator?
You're welcome, use the accelerator and clutch together.
Realised now I burnt up my clutch on my car because I was relying on the ECU in my instructors car and now I need to relearn trying to use gas...
Amazing and underrated teaching. Thanks on my journey to learning manual
You're welcome
Wow thanks! I wonder why my instructor never told me this 🤣🤣🤣
my brother just taught me stick shift and he calls it “feathering the clutch.” when he said that it clicked in my brain :)
Is it normal for a 1L Petrol to rev at 2000Rpm, car sometimes shudders when i get going think it's too much gas, but thats as little as it can go.
Clutch judder can be caused by either a brake fluid leak onto the clutch but in my experience it's normally just a badly worn clutch from abuse. Even though it may still have friction material left it judders.
First video where Richard says his now famous line "...until the next one, cheerio!"
Conquer Driving is the best channel for beginners to understand how to handle the car. Well, cars are categorized as with manual or automatic transmission, but as I watch these series I came to conclusion that cars are with the clutch, and without a clutch, because this part of the car really plays the main role I guess. Thanks a lot for awesome videos Conquer Driving. This channel is the best!
You're absolutely right, the clutch is what makes it a manual.
Just what I was looking for! Thanks mate
You're welcome
Try to make alley docking reverse with cones, I am Nelson from Namibia
Ok I admit at 0:28 I had a mini heart attack haha.
😂
It's weird that you have to ride the clutch to have an idle speed. Why can't manual transmissions idle in first/reverse without dying? Seems like the best blend between manual and automation transmissions
I'm not quite sure what you mean, but I think you mean why does the car stall if you go slow? That's because they engine needs to spin quickly.
Maybe if you made a video like this in 2018, my student driver’s license wouldn’t expire! Haha. Im about to get my Driver’s License and your videos are really helpful! Keep it up! 🚗💨💨💨
I never went to driving school..jus watched his videos and went for tge the test😂
I went ahead and bought a 02 civic with a manual transmission, have learned so much. Don’t stall anymore, this little car always needs gas. It stalls so damn easy lol, I’ve always been scared of hurting my clutch by doing what you’re demonstrating
There will be a video at the end of May on riding the clutch. Doing what I'm doing in the video isn't what your clutch is designed to do.
@@ConquerDriving great thanks!
Really great info as always. I learned this the hard way cause I have a very tight parking space. Also my Mustang gives me alotta help. It actually would scare me cause my Pony wants to run!!!! 🐎
This isn’t really related to the video but what first cars do you recommend? based on insurance and and other expenses
That's a hard thing to do, it all comes down to budget and what you like.
I have a budget of about £2K but I’ve been quoted £2k for a 9 plate astra and 3k for golfs and polos
Big thanks from a silly old american trying to finally learn the manual!
I hope the videos help 😊
They do! Sometimes I forget the videos are designed to not only teach someone to drive a manual, but to also just drive in general lol only in the States could those two things be confused
i purchased a diesel car from 2009 and i'm glad i found this channel, i really love your explanations. cheers from Spain.
If you clutch down/low you will go on slow speed. If you clutch high you will go faster so if i remove my foot from the clutch pedal slowly starting from the low biting point, i will accelerate fast no matter what?
Do you have a parking video where use this method?
Sorry im a bit new and nervous driver
Thank you for your assistance.
Holding the clutch at the bite point accelerates the car until it reaches the speed set by the gas. If you have no gas it will usually reach 4-5mph. This video may help: ruclips.net/video/k1SBFfMbksI/видео.html
Thank you very much sir for your great videos, keep up the awesome work !
I say, learn in a old car with no ECU and drive a car that has ECU. Makes you knowledgeable as well as makes your life easy!
Thank you for your video. I just got my driving license (in France) on a brand new diesel car and was heartbroken when driving my own petrol 2011 car for the first time, realizing I needed to learn the pedals all over again :( it took me ages to learn to use the clutch in the first place and now it turns out I've learnt it wrong for the car I have
It’s actually bad to keep the bite point connected whilst going uphill, it wears out the clutch fabrics and causes to much heat especially, what you should do is use your parking brake whilst at a stop then when traffic moves uphill, you hold brake take parking brake off and switch to first gear and slowly give gas.
This video may be of interest: ruclips.net/video/ttB83nt8J-c/видео.html
Damage control for people who were taught on diesels.
Thanks for your videos. No instructor tell all these tricks, they just say to drive slow while parking, but never explain how to do that.
Very helpful vid. Exactly what I was looking for. Just started learning and having trouble at junctions as cars are parked so close that I've no view of any oncoming traffic. I need to know how to "creep" forward a little before driving off. Thanks. Ray.
You're welcome, I hope it helps.
0:50 most of the drivers on the roads judged incorrectly 😂
Driving a car for 8 hours in the past days and 10 minutes in random days since im borrowing my brother's car and he is not around all the time. Still, cant't get the hang of it. Maybe driving is not for me. I will not be able to buy a car if I can't drive.
8 hours is a very small amount of time. I recommend making sure you have an instructor who helps you and persevering. When you get the hang of it you will unlikely regret your efforts.
Bro amazingly helpful video again, the part about gas not controlling the speed. I have a doubt like, in India we really have sharp turns, so what gear should I use while turning, its really confusing me.
You should use the correct gear for your speed. This video may help: ruclips.net/video/Wrp5v8nVPHU/видео.html
What's the best way to practice clutch control for reversing/parallel parking please? A real struggle for me to go slowly/coordinate whilst reversing 😩
It's best to get good at clutch control going forwards first. This is why I teach my pupils reversing nearer the end of their training.
Just got my first manual, C6 vette and this helped SOOO much with slow speeds. I feel like I subconsciously understood this concept but wasn’t really putting it into practice. Just spent an hour in the parking lot practicing crawling and got a lot better really quickly. Thanks man!
I've started to keep my heel on the floor with the clutch all the way down and slowly bringing it back up while pressing on the gas
2nd practise today with my dad, going on a large car park, nervous 😂
I wish you the best of luck!
This was hugely helpful. I was lifting the clutch all the way off because I didn't understand that at that low of a speed holding it at the bite point really won't damage the clutch
I want to cry of being not your student 😢 😪 😔 😞 😕
Would it matter how much gas you give the car or would it always stay around 1 to 2 mph if you keep the clutch below the bite point (nvm just seen it in video now)
If the clutch is below the bite point the gas won't affect the car as there is no connection.
I always enjoy your teaching. Your students must be very proud of you. Great job, thanks for all tips you give in your videos. They have helped a great deal.
you are a godsend. teaching things will always be plagued with information that is unclear, and i always appreciate teachers that don't.
my instructor said I shouldn't put the gas while I'm doing this kind of maneuver only when I'm moving off
This video may help ruclips.net/video/UdTSRBJrw7Y/видео.html
Just watching this having driven into a garage door on an uphill parking spot this evening - better late than never!
Brilliant brilliant The best ever explaination conquer Know exactly what learners need
Thank you soo much for this your videos have saved me now I don't jerk downshifting.. Alil Rev matching 🔥🔥💪
This made something click in my mind, thank you
need to move very slow in a manual..ride the clutch..the entire time pretty much...
To reduxe clutch wear you can reduce how long you need to move slowly for, for example, in traffic you can let the car in front move a bit further before you move meaning you don't have to do as many small movements.
Your car looks really nice. May I know what car you drive? I live in India. I don't think I have seen this car here.
Thank you. It's a 2014 SEAT Leon fr 1.4 TSI 140 SC
on my car i can just use the clutch without accelerating at all and more i put the clutch up the faster it goes, is that ok to do while parking without burning my clutch ?
That's what you will have to do, wearing the clutch a bit is unavoidable, it's designed to be worn gradually over time. In some cars you will need a bit of gas to prevent it stalling. If you don't need to add gas then the computer is adding gas for you.
