I'm right there with you; many many branches of my family tree originate in western Scotland, and the Inner Hebrides (Buies from Jura, for instance) and her renditions of these songs in the language of my ancestors makes my heart float up in my chest.
I saw them live at a small venue a few years ago and it was one of the most magical experiences. They stayed after and met everyone and I couldn't believe how sweet snd humble they were. I was surprised at how short Julie is lol
I've listened to this song 30 times since Friday. My dog was a Golden Lab. She was Half Scottish. I played this song for her. She ended up passing away on Saturday. I miss her. This song reminds me of my dog. I have Scottish and Welsh heritage. I have Campbell and Wallace blood flowing through me.
My family descendants we transported in 1804 to Van Dieman’s Land from Scotland. The others came to Australia in the “Clearings” in 1840. These songs inexplicably pull at my heart. I’m almost a pure Celt with only one great great grandmother being an Anglo, the rest being Scottish and Welsh.
I am Indian, I have no connection to gaelic, Assassin's Creed Valhalla introduced me to Julie Fowlis and now am obsessed with nordic/gaelic music. Thank you for creating such amazing music.❤
I want to share something personal. I'm adopted, born in South Korea. I've never been back in Korea since I came out of my mother's womb, nor do I have any interest in it anymore. I have the best family in the world, and the first time I heard this song, I couldn't help thinking about both my adoptive mother and a beloved mother figure in my life, with Finnish roots. Now I live in Norway, I speak Norwegian and Finnish, as I found out this winter, that I have ancestry from Finland.. :) So, I imagine that someone or something really bought me home to my mother in a double sense..
You've totally made the Autumn of my life. I was born by the Sea... and my ancestor Octavia was born on the ship from Scotland, and my old MacDonald... he did indeed have a farm....lol. And you remind me where to be born when the next Winter is over... my ancient home in Scotland. Lovely.
She's out of this world, isn't she? She makes me feel like the language she uses and the harmonies she creates are both intimately mine. Even though I'm not from Scotland and have no celtic background whatsoever. This is pure art. I wonder how many Scots started learning Scottish Gaelic because of her. Cause I'm from thinking about starting to learn.
A beautiful and haunting song. Brings tears to the eyes. Such a song should be played in those rare times when you want to be alone in your thoughts, during those times when you remember something or someone has been lost to you who was close to your heart. This song will loose its beauty if heard on a regular basis. Listen to it with your eyes closed in the dark, it conjures up images un your mind. Something that Pink Floyd's music does as well. Music truly goes beyond cultures, languages and races.

If you really want to do that (and I would encourage you with all my heart), this is the to-go-to place: www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/en/ . It is a campus of the University of the Highlands and Islands in a wonderfully out-of-the-world spot on the beautiful Isle of Skye. I was there last year to take my first two courses, they're always running end-to-end during 2 weeks of the college holidays. You can take a first sniff at Gaelic (I'd always advise to take levels 1 and 2 in succession), if you like it come back next year for the next 2 levels - that's what I'm planning to do. They have excellent teachers, the student community is great, and there's lots of overwhelmingly beautiful music. Even Julie herself is said to make an appearance there occasionally!
I always feel that if I just listen a little closer I will be able to understand her. So beautiful, and the old instruments are incredible. More please.

It's nice to read the Gaelic as she sings it. Thank you, although I'm a Southerner from Georgia USA, I'm intrigued with your Gaelic language. Maybe it is hereditary, as I have no idea of my ancestors origins. Possibly Welsh , but no records.
Chanson magnifique découverte par hasard. Julie a une voix magnifique. Ses musiciens sont aussi très talentueux. J'adore cette chanson et tous ceux à qui je l'ai fait entendre adorent. Salutations du Québec.
It's a girl pleading with a magical water horse who stole her away (as a bride, I think - there's another song Julie sings about a water horse whose human lover has left him with a son he can't take care of, which I've always assumed is a sequel to this one) to return her to her family, and she's saying that she doesn't want anything he might offer, just to go home as he found her.
This set of Gaelic balards has me deep in thought, For our woman folk, Our mother's, - Wives, Sister's and Daughters. Be kind to them, Show them respect. Love them all. Na Cropy boy. Over.
Superb, the storyline conveyed in the lyrics and Julie's singing is very moving. The natural serenity of the Highlands and a type of sentimentality is evoked in mind. Being that there are such few fluent speakers of the Gaelic languages, must be preserved along with Scottish ethnic and cultural identity!

Gur ann a-raoir a chuala mi Mo ghaol a bhith ri buachailleachd, 'S ged fhuair thu 'n iomall na buaile mi, A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi. It was only last night That I heard that my love was herding And though you found me at the perimeter of the cattle fold Love, let me home as you found me. 'S mi dìreadh ris na gàrraidhean, 'S a' teàrnadh ris na fàirichean, Gun d' thachair fleasgach bàigheil rium, 'S cha d' dh' fheuch e bonn ga chàirdeis rium. I was clambering up the dykes And descending the ridges When a friendly lad met me And he did not enforce his friendship on me. Ged bheireadh tu crodh agus caoraich dhomh, Ged bheireadh tu eachaibh air thaodaibh dhomh, Ged bheireadh tu sin agus daoine dhomh, A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi. Though you were to give me cattle and sheep Though you were to give me tethered horses Though you were to give me that and men Love, let me home as you found me. Trodaidh m' athair 's mo mhàthair riut, Trodaidh mo chinneadh 's mo chàirdean riut, Ach marbhaidh mo thriùir bhràithrean thu Mura tèid mi dhachaigh mar thàine mi. My mother and father will chastise you My clan and my relatives will chastise you But my three brothers will kill you If I don’t return home as I came. Gheall mo mhàthair gùn thoirt dhomh, Gheall i ribean a b' ùire dhomh, Is gheall i breacan ùr thoirt dhomh Ma thèid mi dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi My mother promised me a gown Decorated with the newest of ribbons And she promised me a new plaid If I return home the way you found me.

thanks so much dear Julie. Your voice is the voice of the wind, the voice of the sky and of the universe, the voice of the true life....inside everything. God bless you and your musicians. Thanks.
Julie has concluded, as always, something intriguing to sensitive, kind souls. Mine breaks out there, into those bays wet with waves, into the paneled fields of boulders, into the northern sea depths. It is a song full of hope that connects youth and maturity. My love is there. ❤
Three or so of the Gaelic folk songs I've heard here- absolutely beautiful- were in Scotland, before A.D. or even before that old Pisces aeon began; this one was in Isle of Mann as early, came to Scotland later. At that time, those of Mann thought of themselves as being of Caillyech; would say Caillyech Goeff Broghech... Caillyech and Scotia, Mahadevis, have been special friends of the Scottish; the patron or friend deity of Scotland is Qore...
Gaelic is such an amazing language. I don't understand any of it, but I've sang several gaelic songs in choir and I listen to a lot of scottish music. It's beautiful to hear singers singing in their native languages

Me too, it’s beautiful.
I have been studying scottish for a few months now, and listening to julie is a great way to expand on proper pronunciation of the language.
I always feel that if I just listen a little closer I will be able to understand her.
So beautiful, and the old instruments are incredible.
More please.
This. I’ve been trying to find this video all night, and I’ve been thinking about it all day.
I'm a quarter Scots with deep ancestral roots in north-eastern and south-western Scotland. This speaks to my heart and soul. It's more than lovely. ❤
I weep every time I listen to this. Julie Fowlis is pure Celtic genius to this old man's heart...
...and still is.
Love your songs Julie and keep the Gaelic language going 😍
Julie - From Poland With Love!

Your music looks like a fairy tale is beautiful. Greetings from Serbia.
I have been listening to this while I'm at work. So beautiful!
Thank you Ms Fowlis, for keeping the Ald Songs alive.
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi;
A ghràidh, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi;
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi -
An tòir chrodh-laoigh a thàine mi.
Gur ann a-raoir a chuala mi
Mo ghaol a bhith ri buachailleachd,
’S ged fhuair thu ’n iomall na buaile mi,
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi.
’S mi dìreadh ris na gàrraidhean,
’S a’ teàrnadh ris na fàirichean,
Gun d’ thachair fleasgach bàigheil rium,
’S cha d’ dh’ fheuch e bonn ga chàirdeis rium.
Ged bheireadh tu crodh agus caoraich dhomh,
Ged bheireadh tu eachaibh air thaodaibh dhomh,
Ged bheireadh tu sin agus daoine dhomh,
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi.
Trodaidh m’ athair ’s mo mhàthair riut,
Trodaidh mo chinneadh ’s mo chàirdean riut,
Ach marbhaidh mo thriùir bhràithrean thu
Mura tèid mi dhachaigh mar thàine mi.
Gheall mo mhàthair gùn thoirt dhomh,
Gheall i ribean a b’ ùire dhomh,
Is gheall i breacan ùr thoirt dhomh
Ma thèid mi dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi.
Is there a phonetic transliteration of this for those of us not fortunate enough to know Scottish Gaelic?
Thank you
Thank you
It's nice to read the Gaelic as she sings it.
Thank you, although I'm a Southerner from Georgia USA, I'm intrigued with your Gaelic language. Maybe it is hereditary, as I have no idea of my ancestors origins. Possibly Welsh , but no records.
Thank you very much for the lyrics! Much appreciated.
So schön! Wunderbar!
My conscious mind did not understand a word, but my soul is weeping.
Greetings from the Mackenzie Country, New Zealand
Chanson magnifique découverte par hasard. Julie a une voix magnifique. Ses musiciens sont aussi très talentueux. J'adore cette chanson et tous ceux à qui je l'ai fait entendre adorent. Salutations du Québec.
Have no clue what she sings about yet it feels liberating, such an angelic voice perfect pitch
One of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Thank you very much Julie.
This set of Gaelic balards has me deep in thought, For our woman folk, Our mother's, - Wives, Sister's and Daughters. Be kind to them, Show them respect. Love them all. Na Cropy boy. Over.
Wow this song has such soul. I have no idea what she’s saying but Gaelic is a beautiful Language
Opino lo mismo.
An excellent song I can't stop listening to...
Wonderful, beautiful, no words can describe it. Incredible song, incredible voice. Thank you very much
LYRICS
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi;
A ghràidh, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi;
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi -
An tòir chrodh-laoigh a thàine mi.
Love, let me home to my mother
Darling, let me home to my mother
Love, let me home to my mother
I only came for the cattle.
Gur ann a-raoir a chuala mi
Mo ghaol a bhith ri buachailleachd,
'S ged fhuair thu 'n iomall na buaile mi,
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi.
It was only last night
That I heard that my love was herding
And though you found me at the perimeter of the cattle fold
Love, let me home as you found me.
'S mi dìreadh ris na gàrraidhean,
'S a' teàrnadh ris na fàirichean,
Gun d' thachair fleasgach bàigheil rium,
'S cha d' dh' fheuch e bonn ga chàirdeis rium.
I was clambering up the dykes
And descending the ridges
When a friendly lad met me
And he did not enforce his friendship on me.
Ged bheireadh tu crodh agus caoraich dhomh,
Ged bheireadh tu eachaibh air thaodaibh dhomh,
Ged bheireadh tu sin agus daoine dhomh,
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi.
Though you were to give me cattle and sheep
Though you were to give me tethered horses
Though you were to give me that and men
Love, let me home as you found me.
Trodaidh m' athair 's mo mhàthair riut,
Trodaidh mo chinneadh 's mo chàirdean riut,
Ach marbhaidh mo thriùir bhràithrean thu
Mura tèid mi dhachaigh mar thàine mi.
My mother and father will chastise you
My clan and my relatives will chastise you
But my three brothers will kill you
If I don’t return home as I came.
Gheall mo mhàthair gùn thoirt dhomh,
Gheall i ribean a b' ùire dhomh,
Is gheall i breacan ùr thoirt dhomh
Ma thèid mi dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi
My mother promised me a gown
Decorated with the newest of ribbons
And she promised me a new plaid
If I return home the way you found me.
Mòran taing airson nam facail seo a phostadh!
hello from italy..is a beautiful woman !!! and this voice ..no coment....Thank you Julie for this song...respect
I have lost my way, except for the path that is celebrated. Glory and union, unless there is evil. Then we must be what we are, and always will be
Julies voice is so special; she has the ability to change tone and delivery for any particular song. This song, accompanied by wonderful musicians, brings deep emotion out from me. I hope I can get to see her live before my life is through. Iain
thanks so much dear Julie.
Beautiful - Living in the states, this sound makes me think of home!
Such a breathtaking performer. The harmonies that Julie creates with each of the musicians is just pure magic
This is incredibly beautiful and emotionally charged.
I would argue thos girl has 1 of the best voices on earth. When she sings in assassin's Creed I was lost for a minute lol. Haunting . And she's just as pretty as she sounds 😏
