Power chains are made up of lots of little elastics joined together that your orthodontist stretches over your brace to close spaces or gaps between your teeth.
Once the gaps between your teeth have closed, the powerchain is also often used to hold the gaps closed.

My orthodontist put a power chain on my braces yesterday and holy moly, the pain is worse than when first getting braces put on. This morning I cannot even eat soft bread!

I had a powerchain added to my lower brace at the very first appt. (i.e. when my braces were fitted) and my teeth have not hurt at all during my first week in braces. I must have a high pain threshold!

Liessssssss. I got my power chains on yesterday. I’m hating life at the moment. Usually the tightening doesn’t bother me at all. This is the first time where my teeth are killing me. These things are brutal.

When they put it you don't feel anything new, the shit starts after a few hours or days 😭

My daughter got the power chain and she keeps waking me up at night saying “ mama, it hurts!!!” And I don’t really know what to do.
The pain usually eases after a few days. I would also recommend asking her orthodontist if it's OK to take a regular pain killer that she would normally take for a headache to help ease the pain. This is what I often recommend to my patients. Wish you all the best 🙌

When you said normally at the end of braces, I was soooooooooo happy! I have had themfor about 4 years, and my gap infront of my 2 front teeth has gotten big, but has stayed with me for a long time. about a month ago, I got my first powerchain on the 4 front teeth. they closed the gap between my 2 front teeth, but there is not a gap between my fourth and fifth teeth, mostly on the left side. I am looking forward to my next appointment. I have been taking such good care of my braces and i was not too much in the beggimning. but in the past year or more, i have been and ive seen great changes!! I really hope to get them off soon, even my dentist who does the cleaning thinks the same :) :) :) :)

Well I got another set of power chains on for me cause I’m getting my braces off in February of this year! 2 years of pain has been worth it. For my braces I have a high tolerance for pain from all the tightens. It hurts a little but I can still chew things perfectly fine.
The only reason I’m here is because I get these yesterday and I already want them off

I just woke up at 2 am, I got a new power chain at the top and bottom although the top doesn’t hurt but the bottom hurts like heck (it’s my first time getting a power chain on the bottom) cause I hade singles the colored band things
I have had a power chain for 4/5 months (due to corona), the first appointment it definitely hurts, but If you need them again it won’t hurt since your used to it :))
Exactly. Unless they make large adjustments on top of having the powerchains (the wire usually) then the power chains don't really hurt after the first time.
not at all. i got a power chain, the next appointment it was taken off, and my most recent one i got it on again. sure, its not as bad, but its still pretty bad.
Dr Sarah so many changes from when I had braces way back when! My son has special needs and was so glad I went forward to get braces for him. Do you recommend retainers that are removable or permanent?
Hi Bridget, braces have changed loads over the years and they can really boost someone's confidence! A worthwhile investment for sure. Personally I prefer removable retainers, but it really is case dependent. I'm currently producing a video on retainers and will discuss them all with the pros and cons for each 🙏😊

Im on day 4 of having power chains & the pain is almost unbearable. It literally feels like my teeth are going to fall out. I keep swishing cool water around my mouth to sooth my gums & ibuprofen has been a true friend but these are certainly death.

They replaced my wire with a thicker wire and added power chains at the same time, it’s been 3 days, the pain is crazy

I had braces when I was like 9, and I remember having those chain things but never knew what it was for. Long story short I have braces again now (got them 2 days ago) and now I don't have the chains but instead just of the individual little bands, so I was so confused as to why I remembered having chains but don't now. This definitely helped alot I fr was so confused lol

Heyy, I’ve had my braces for almost 3 years and my orthodontist still hasn’t said anything about powerchains or rubber bands and at this point I feel like she’s prolonging the treatment process for her gain😭 how do I fix this?
Hi SaVonnie, thanks for your message, don't be afraid to discuss any concerns you have with your orthodontist. Not every patient may need powerchains or elastic bands, but I would recommend having a chat :)

iv had a powerchain for about 3 months and (different appointments) and i just got them tightened and it hurts soooo bad! i haven’t had this much pain since i first got my braces. i have had my braces for a year and a half and my orthodontist said i should be getting them off in about 3 months because i missed some appointments. idk if it’s the same for everyone but i get my braces tightened every month. but my front gap is the only thing needed to close rn and it’s taking foreverrrrr! can’t wait to get them off.
It is so painful, I just got my power chain on the bottom front teeth to close a gap and it is very sensitive! I can’t wait to get it off. I’m not sure how long I need to have it on but I’ll be going in for double jaw surgery this February!

I’ve had my braces for a year and few months with a removal date of Jan 23. Out of all my adjustments this one hurt the most and my teeth has been sore for 3 days opposed to that 1 day discomfort. At this point I’m ready to take them off as I dislike pain. All jokes and complaining aside I can’t wait to see the end result for the one tooth I wanted to fix.

@@JAYNICOLEE77 usually within a day or three.... Worst case a week I g....also this happens only the very first time u get power chains. Subsequent monthly replacement doesn't hurt.

I just got my braces tightened and power chains on yesterday and GOOD LORD. My mouth hurts so bad😭
There are lot of gaps between my teeth due to the extractions to fix my overbite. My dentist never use this powerchain for me and gaps are not getting fixed over months. I always discuss this with her but she just keeps on changing the normal chain. What should I do?
Had gotten 2 power chains, it did pain until next day morning and it was fine for me.

Interesting. I'm on my fourth month with one crooked tooth on my left side, and my orthodontist already put the power chain. Can't chew and it's the first time in my treatment I need to take painkiller. But my ortho said it's to rotate my tooth instead of tightening/closing the gaps.
To those that say it hurts, it’s not pain. It’s soreness. (And currently I’m wearing them, and it’s sore.)
This is fascinating!! I'm not certain please can you tell me if there are circumstances that make having power chain more difficult? I'm thinking that age might play a part. Also, is there a special mouth wash to use , to remove loitering stuff that brushing can't reach? Thank-you very much for this video!
Hi Caroline thanks! Yes there are circumstances where we wouldn't be keen to use powerchain. One of those is if brushing for the patient is proving to be difficult, as powerchain can make brushing even more tricky! Age isn't too much of an issue when it comes to powerchain. I recommend using a alcohol-free mouthwash as the alcohol can cause the powerchain to degrade faster. Mouthwashes generally won't be as good at cleaning compared to a toothbrush and toothpaste, they're more for freshening up the mouth👍

Hi Sue, braces can really be provided at any age provided the teeth and supporting structures are healthy. Movement can take a little longer than in children, but it's still very possible!
I got this freaking powerchain yesterday. Before this for 8 weeks I never felt pain in my teeth due to braces. But after this yesterday AARGHH It feels like all my teeth are gonna break even if I just softly close my jaws

Hi Ipatch, thanks for your comment. Difficult times at the moment, but things will move forwards. If you experience any problems with your brace while Your orthododintist is closed, I have another video covering this 🤗
I was suppose to get the herbst appliance, everything was falling in the right places. I got the top, then the bottom. The day I get the arms put in, I can’t move my mouth. A tooth in the back was pointed inward so I couldn’t bite. I was sitting there crying due to the pain , with my mouth stuck open. I have a horrible overbite, and this is the only option. I went back the next month ( everything was removing, and I just had normal braces) to them telling me I’m not getting the appliance and they are leaving bite as is. Couple months later I’m sitting here with power chains.

My first day I got braces they started me out with power chains and elastics. I have a lot of gaps and a big overbite but for the most part my teeth were already somewhat straight, so maybe that’s why. I’m glad they did so I can get use to all the pain at once in the beginning and can be prepared for anything now lol
