- What to do when you have stopped wearing your retainer...
I'll go over the 3 main options:
1. If your teeth have not shifted too much just try to push the retainer in as much as possible and then keep it in for 3 weeks.
2. If your teeth have shifted a little come in for a new set of retainers.
3. If your teeth have really shifted then you likely need orthodontic treatment again!

Haven’t worn my retainer for over 10 years. As a child, I didn’t understand. Now I notice my smile isn’t what it used to be and now I wish I never stopped wearing the retainer.
real
I lost mine and I just got a new one
I haven’t worn mine consistently in a few years but when I wear it I just shove it back on and deal with the pain. 😂😂 it makes me have a lisp though.
how did it go?
Jeffrey J it hurts a bit, it’s like jabbing your knee multiple times back to bs k but on your teeth
After months i am wearing mine now huhu
Same🤣🤣
It’s been 15 years since I got my braces taken off and I don’t think I’ve ever gone more than a few days without my retainers 😅 the only thing I’ve ever been able to stay consistent at lol
Great job!!!!
Wow!
It is hard for me to do. Me putting it back in after > a year. It hurts… Thinking getting permanent retainer when my teeth settle down …
SAME! 14 years here and ive gone off it maybe at MAX like 6-7 days? rarely though. ive seen many friends who have done more than 2-3 cycles of braces. and that is so not for me! Happy with my teeth and im keeping my retainers
@@ThriveDentist Hi Doctor I have a question, my braces were taken off 10 years ago, I wear my retainers at night but I grind a lot so some of my molars are cracking, i am getting a lower splint made to protect my teeth at night, should i make my lower night splint to the upper retainers so I can continue to use my upper retainers at night? I am sure if im getting a lower night guard splint to use at night that my lower teeth will not changed right? or should i have my new lower splint made with touching my upper teeth or is better to ask to have the new splint made with my upper retainers?
Hi! Thanks for the informative video. Haven't been wearing my plastic retainer in a few years but it does fit like 80% still. I'll try to wear it like that until I can hopefully push it down all the way.
Hi Dr. Nate, I have just got my invisaligns a week ago - having braces was a great journey (2 years and 5 days), and I intend to wear the retainers as responsible as possible. Your video definitively gives a lot of motivation - thank you!
That's not invisibliners, that's different. Invisibliners are braces without metal. They move your teeth to straighten. But retainers just retain the teeth. They hold the teeth in the same place so they don't shift back. Acrylic retainers just look like them.
When I got my braces off in 2008, I had a glued in bar placed in. Last year, my dentist told me to get the bar out and get a clear retainer. I'm an adult, we figured, so I couldn't lose it. What I immediately learned about myself is that I'm and adult who lost it.
Anyway, I was looking for something else just now and found the retainer that I lost twelve days after I lost it, so thank you for this video. Still miss my glued-in retainer! Had it for over a decade and never once had a problem with it.
I just ended my third round of orthodontics last year (over the course of 25 years), so I get a little antsy if I fall asleep without my retainers for even one night and if I do, I will at least put them in for a couple hours when I wake up.
A few years before my last round, I discovered that my art mentor's teeth had moved so much over the years that her lower teeth were touching the roof of her mouth. Even if you haven't had braces, wearing a retainer at night can save you from from having to go through an intense painful round of braces in the future. Totally worth it!
Thank you for this, Doc!
As an orthodontist, I like the plastic retainer better too. I usually give my patients these tips too😁
I haven’t worn my retainer in like 13 years and noticed shifting recently and wanted to wear them for my teeth grinding and after getting an extraction. They fit like 70% of the way so I’m trying to get them back this way! I kept my braces on longer because I knew I wouldn’t be consistent with my retainer and I’m so glad I did.
I haven’t wore them for like 2 months, i have then on now and it feels so tight, can’t imagine the pain i’m gonna have in the morning😢
I stopped wearing my metal retainers about 2 or 3 years ago. They always kind of hurt my gum around the side of my bottom right back tooth area, which is probably why I tired of wearing them.
But I began to notice a gap in my upper front teeth, and my lower bottom teeth began crowding again. So I fit them back in since a couple days ago. The upper retainer fits perfectly. The lower one fits 70 or 80%.. It hurts in the same spot as before but the pain subsides a bit. I'm able to close my mouth and bite my teeth together. Is this a good sign? If it works, will this move my teeth back in place?
It's been over a year since I didn't wore my retainers and I only noticed a very slight shift on the bottom of my teeth.
Hi dr. I am undergoing orthodontics residency from india, if you could upload some clinical tips for orthodontists, from your clinician point of view, it wud help us a lot… Thankyou… or you can tell me how to contact you personally to learn from you…😁✌🏻
I haven't worn mine in 2 years or something but I was at a point my dentist gave an ok to scale it down
Hello Thrive dental I just have a question about Invisalign/retainers. How can an orthodontist tell that I have been wearing my retainer for too long/too much?
I haven’t worn mine. In 2 years and it hurts like hell when I put it back in
I haven’t gone more than 1 night without my retainer since having my braces off after double jaw surgery.
If you’ve undergone orthognathic surgery - wearing a retainer is a breeze. Just do it, guys. Take care of your mouth.
Went through 7 years of braces and jaw surgery. Didn’t wear my retainers for 2 years.😬
So basically in 20 years I'm gonna be 40 and still be wearing my 30 year old wiry retainer to bed every night? Now I'm depressed ahah
Mine one broke and my dentist won't give me a new one and he's charging way too much for plastic retainer
So I should be using the retainers the rest of my life? When can I be sure everything will stick in place for good?
well my orthodontist told me that after 1 year i can stop wearing them BUT since i’m still growing and my teeth in the back are growing too, my front teeth still shifted so yeah i’m going to wear my retainer to see
I'm at stage one still. They go in completely, just hurt a lot. It's just difficult for me to wear them 24/7 because I speak a lot at work and there are some consonants I cannot pronounce clearly with them in :/
can you get away with just wearing it during the night? will it just take even longer to get to normal?
i wore my retainers as recommended for a year but for some reason i got out of the habit of wearing them. I haven't worn them in about 5 months. My top row have barely moved however the front 4 teeth on my bottom row have shifted forwards and backwards. I don't really mind the difference but will my current retainers stop them shifting further? They mostly fit but it's quite painful to break them in
Bro does the upper teeth shift
@@ashhh7995 Im not even sure. It doesn't really look like it for me. Lately I've only been wearing the bottom part of it.
My retainer can fit but it makes me teeth placement feel really off. My lateral incisor feels too far pushed in with the retainer.
Is it possible to just buy a pair of retainers online? My teeth aren’t bad but I’ve lost my retainer :/
Haven’t worn mine in a couple of months, they can fit in with force but I’m gonna try to put it in where it’ll let me and see if I can shimmy my teeth back into it-wish me luck 😭
My bottom row of teeth are super crowded after not wearing my retainers for two years (the bottom one didn’t even fit on my teeth), so I forced it on and it’s been 5 days and the teeth are moving slowly. Do you think they will eventually re-align?
Did they re-align?
It’s been 16 years since I last wore my retainer consistently. It fits but hurts like a mofo, especially when I take it off. I’ve been wearing it for an hour each day last couple days, so I’m glad I came across this vid. Gonna attempt to sleep with it on 😬
I have had a tooth trauma so i have gotten a permanent crown so should i wear the retainer or not?
Haven’t worn my retainer in close to 10 years . Managed to get mine on. Very tight
I have a query even with missing teeth can I wear retainers as I had got my wisdom tooth extracted and my 1st molar is missing
Oh my fing gosh that hurt it’s been a month and a half 😂thank god it fit though worth pain glad I don’t have to spend my parents money they would’ve been pissed thanks man
My dentist told me to wear aligners only for 2 years after removing braces and I followed the same...now It fits like 60-70 % can I try this method?
One of my tooth shifted so the retaining doesn't go all the way down but the rest of my teeth fit so I'm going to put it on like 50 percent of the way down for a few weeks and see how it goes
Haven't worn mine for weeks, and it hurts so bad I can barely sleep. Can i take painkiller while wearing it for the next three days?
My orthodontist didn't ever listen to me and she kept telling me that it didn't matter that I was in constant pain. I stopped wearing it and my teeth look the same honestly, maybe a little bit of shifting but my bottom teeth that "needed" braces so badly ended up straightened out on their own. Orthodontists are either amazing or terrible tbh.
They look the same after a year?
I have been wearing braces for 1.5 years.. My doctor told me that i dont need retainers..i didnt remove any teeth for my treatment. Any idea on why my doctor said i dont need it
i accidentally broke mine and can't afford to get another, plus, its been more than a year, what could I do ?
Do the teeth actually go back to the “right when you got your braces “ look?
My first molars are going under my metal retainer help ⁉️😢
How often do you replace your retainers after braces? For example, you wear the retainers religiously, and since the trays are plastic, do they stretch out over time and require to be replaced, say... every year? And what's the best way to clean them? I've heard use vinegar and water mixture, brush them with toothpaste, or use efferdent.
atleast for how many days should I wear retainers after getting off my braces?
I am facing difficulty to talk with retainers, hope it will become better if I read louder with retainers so that I can be habitual.Hope it will work.
I had braces both top and bottom and my teeth are still not straight.
Lost my clear retainer and it’s been down hill ever since, even tho I got a free metal retainer I hate it compared to the clear one.
i'm meant to be getting my braces taken off within a week or two but I'm unhappy with a black triangle that developed between two teeth.. Is it appropriate for me to ask that this be fixed before my braces are removed? or just deal with the look because my orthodontist says the process is ready to wrap up?
Definitely ask if they can be improved. He/she may or may not be able to improve it depending on the situation.
Haven’t worn mine since i got em and now trying to put em in
I haven’t worn my retainer in about 6-7 years, but they still fit most of the way. There is a tiny amount of space between my teeth and the retainer.
It has only shifted slightly, so i’m gonna keep it in for 3 weeks and update.
Update please
Update??
@@jacobforson2209 I will not lie. I did not put it in after 1 week, I completely forgot. I’ll start doing it for 3 weeks tomorrow and update yall, my bad.
Update
Sir why mettalic retainers hurt?
I haven’t worn my retainer very consistently for abt. 2 years, but have worn it on and off.
But I have a small crack/cavity on both of my 2nd molars, and because I haven’t worn my retainer in like 2 weeks, when I put it in overnight, the next morning it hurt SOO bad, it felt like it made the crack worse, because of the pressure. I know I need to get fillings/crowns.
Do u know what should I do in this situation, until I get the crowns??
Will wearing my retainer right now make the crack worse??
It has only been 2 weeks since i had my braces off and i already lost mine. its gonna take a month until the new one arrives... are my teeth fucked?
My top will fit but my bottom won’t idk why the top hasn’t changed
I got my braces off and didn’t wear them for around 2 weeks and my bottom teeth moved, but my retainers fit like 90-95% so I’m going to wear them for a month 24/7 and then just use them for a night routine
Yeahhh same I THINK my bottom teeth may have moved or my top I'm not too sure, but my retainer still pretty much fits even though I haven't worn them probably in a couple or few months LOL, but yeah Ima try the 3 weeks or a month and go back to my night routine after that and try my hardest to be consistent this time loll.
My orthodentist was so sure I won't wear my retainers regularly he asked me to go for permanent retainer and I'm literally happy about that and they aren't visible as well and I don't have to use a retainer regularly
so so can you tell if you have the retainer on? does it hurt?
@@prttyfairyy you cant tell because the retainer is behind the teeth
If i havent wore a retainer for 1 year cuz of the pandemic cuz clinics are closed?
They go back to natural form or go anywhere?? I wanna know
Why is my Hawley retainer is lower than the centre of my teeth?????and its tooo tight?????
I stopped wearing mine in grade school, my teeth shifted kind of but not enough where I care lol still look straight
Will i be able to put ny retainer in if i forgot to wear it for around 6 days??
I put my top retainers in and it is the metal retainers. I have worn my retainers since 2019 or 2020. My top retainer hurt when I put it in on my top teeth, my bottom retainer doesn’t fit at all. My question is would I have to get braces again if this is the case. I recently just got scanned for new retainers and they are the plastic ones I’m just nervous my teeth have shifted.
Lost mine a few weeks ago I should be fine if I get new ones 😳
Doctor I'm an Arabic guy who's watching you and I hope u can help me I just but my retainer and I hate it it's complicated my doctor didn't treat me well and he took my money and he escaped plz doc how long I will but this retainer in my mouth they said 6 months is it true plz help doc ):
Hello❤

I also have pulled four teeth 2up and 2 dwon but
I have wisdom teeth that are not fully erupted
please guide and help me
Which one i should chooce? What should i do???🙏🙏🙏
Retainer fatigue. When I first got mine, popping them in once a month was no problem. After years though, it really is fatiguing, I put it in once per year, maybe doesnt fit perfectly, so I wear it for a week. Then, a few years later am pretty tired of doing even that. There has to be another way, these retainers really are exhausting to keep dealing with.
PLEASE HELP I HAVENT PUT MY RATRANIER IN FOR A LONG TIME AND ITS NOT GETTING IN AND MY DAD DOSENT KNOW WHAT DO I DO 😭😭
If I haven’t wore my retainer for 10 months plus and my bottom teeth shifted enough were if doesn’t fit, how would a new one shift it back? And how bad of a shift do u need for braces again? Asking for a friend😅😀
Hey, I am in a similiar situation as you currently and I am not sure what to do now. What ended up happening in your situation?
Y’all really went years without your retainers and can get them back in. I went 7 weeks and can’t fit it back without biting down.
Its been years for me and I have to bite them down kinda. He said to adjust to that and keep tryna fot them off
@@shaly642 I haven’t really been consistently bitting down. After a while did it fit normal again? I don’t wanna have to buy the expensive version.
I’d prefer to just deal with my crooked teeth, they’re not horrible, there’s only one that’s kinda a tiny bit being another one, I’ll just try to keep it extra clean and that should hopefully be good, if not I’ll just lose a tooth, not the end of the world, I can always save up and get an implant.
So its been 10 years since I've really ever worn my retainer... however I can still force them on (with pain). Should I keep trying to keep them on 24/7 for 3 weeks or will this do more damage than good? Is it normal for my teeth to feel looser when i take the retainer off?
I want to know the same thing…
Sorry I know it's been a year and you probably already got it solved but if you didn't I read an article about it that's how I got to this video, it said that if you feel a discomfort when you put it on even tho that's how it is for me rn but it means that a shift happened and if you have to force it that defiantly means a shift happened it said to never put it back on again cause it will cause tooth damage then you have to get oral surgery all that but I would double check with your orthodontist first about it if you haven't already and see what they say.
I haven’t worn my retainers in about 6 months and my teeth have moved. I’ve tried putting my old retainer back on for my top teeth and it fits all the way however it’s pushing my gums up and it’s hurts, am I still ok to wear it?
No go change it
Trying this method fs
I had braces junior and senior year in high school. After wearing them for a year and a half I wore my retainers for a year and half to prevent my teeth from shifting. I stopped wearing them because I had skin problems. Once it started to clear my teeth shifted a little bit and ended up with a gap between my upper teeth but not as much as bigger before I had braces. Would I have to wear metal braces again or just wear the retainers?
I have the same problem , my ortho tightened my retainers and f*clef them up with my bottom ones made my teeth crowd , but i’m getting a slight gap in my front teeth and i’m not sure if the retainers helping
I have been wearing brace for 1.5 year and now I am only 10 months to go and then I will wear my retainers BTW thanks for useful information
I had braces for 26 months as an adult. If I don’t wear the retainer from the beginning how long until my teeth look bad again? 1-2 years? I’m already old so I’m near the end of my life anyways
Your teeth can begin shifting in just a couple days if you don't wear your retainer from the beginning.
Where is your office located?
I haven't wore my retainers in 3 months after treatment and now I see a slight gap in teeths
My retainer fits well
So what should I do wear the retainer or will I have to put braces again?
Wear retainers unless ur trying to pay for braces
will it effect me if i dont where if for 5 days
Ok so I haven’t worn my retainer in like 2 years, my teeth have only shifted slightly but I can get my retainer on FULLY. My teeth don’t hurt or anything, it’s just the back part of the bottom retainer where the two front teeth are just digs into my gums a little, Thats it.
What is your advice on that?
Did they end up fixing the shifting ??
@@Ddawsson not really, I mean sorta but it really cuts into my gums, borderline causing them to bleed, and only in that very front part, I might use some sand paper or something to just relieve the gum part so that it doesn’t cut into my gums the way it does
I decided to get permanent retainers, that way I don’t have to worry about keeping up with them
are they visible and do they hurt
@@prttyfairyy they are hidden behind your teeth so it’s not visible unnless someone tries to see it, it doesn’t hurt at all and i forgot i had it on after two hours. i still wear my retainer thought because the permanent retainer is only there for my front teeth
@@hadesfilm8261 i have a permanent retainer for my bottom teeth and I wanna ask my orthodontist if I can get a permanent retainer for my top teeth because I just got plastic retainers and oml i CANT live like this 😭
Soo I had 2 retainers & the after my dog chewed my 2nd one I was to scared to go back & get a new one bc I thought they’d be annoyed now I regret it & I feel like one of my top teeth have moved 🥺 I’m not sure if I should go get a new retainer now after it’s been like 2 years almost 3 or just doomed
I broke my retainer somehow and I notice some gap between my teeth and I am in abroad I can’t go back to my doctor (my own country) what should I do any suggestion? So much worried about it.
Is it just a crack or is it completely broken in two? If its cracked, just wear it normally and to take it off, pull from the sides opposite of the crack. If its broken in half, wear it and do the same thing. Maybe you can get an appointment with some doctor in the country you are away in.
I’m completely up for wearing retainers while I’m sleeping but how long do I need to wear them full time (after having braces removed) ?
For us it's 3 months.
Ugh I’m here cause my oldest daughter, hasn’t wear her retainer every night, and now dad, and her are telling me it doesn’t fit. I’m so annoyed with her not keeping up being lazy, knowing how much it was to get her teeth straight, and then a retainer isn’t cheap either smh.
Ugh sorry to hear!!
Depending on how bad the teeth shifted, if they shifted alot, might just go get braces again, or the liners. If they only shifted a little, she can go and get new retainers.
I haven't worn my metal retainers in abt 3 years...I wanna shove them on but could I chip/break my teeth doing this ?
Possibility. Depends on how tight it is. Im not quite sure exactly because I have a plastic one. Just put it on slowly and if it feels really tight, dont force it.
i haven’t worn mine in a few months and i just now put it on. it doesn’t hurt but my teeth aren’t perfectly straight. should i still get a replacement
If you are fine with your teeth not being perfectly straight, then keep wearing your current one, if you dont like the crookedness, it might be best to get a new one to stop any further shifting, if you are looking to reverse the damage done, you could get new braces but that to me would be a last resort.
I haven't worn mine in over 11 years and it still somehow fits. It hurts, but it still fits
how tf💀
Same for me. My teeth haven’t shifted much, and isn’t really painful wearing them, just makes my teeth sore.
I haven’t had braces in over 10 years, and just thought about wearing mine again because of a slight shift for two of my teeth. (:
Haven’t worn mine in 8 years i almost couldn’t get it off last night it hurt so bad lmao
@@xXMehYourFacesxD did it move them back?
Damn and I thought I was the only one but I haven’t used mine in over 4 years maybe 5? But it still fits mostly I think . So I’m gonna keep using it now
I wore mine religiously until I quit 6 months ago. My teeth aren’t straight anymore, but my TMJ is nearly gone. Any advice for people who’s retainers make TMJ worse?
I work in an orthodontist office as an assistant, I have no idea why a retainer would cause more pain. But you should go into an orthodontist (the one you had in the past or a new one) to see what they advice. Maybe having your retainer built a little thicker on one side would help that TMJ.
Hmm that is a little unusual. It could be that you were grinding your teeth when you had the retainer in your mouth causing your TMJ to get worse.
What's tmj
Mewing
@@imlissa TMJ is when you open your jaw and hear a click or get stock when you open your mouth. It’s can be painful pain in the jaw, headache, ears, and eyes. Some would experience more things. You can look it up here to get a better picture or idea of what TMJ is. I have experienced those pain, but my doctor doesn't think it is TMJ, but it could be something else with the same pain
Idk when was the last time I wore my retainer LOL now it's not getting in, and I just leave it alone
Did ur teeth shift back to pre treatment position?
@@ayeshafarha107 yes, a little bit... I think I need to get braces again :(
Please answer this question, my top retainer fits almost 80% meanwhile the bottom barely fits.. What should i do? 😭😭
Mine was ths same way. You try what he said in the video. Try putting them on, if they are too tight, dont force it. You can try getting the bottom one on as best as you can. It might feel a little sore. Just wear them all the time and take them off to eat and brush. Youre teeth will shift slightly and will start to feel better each time you continuously wear them.
I forgot my retainer in another country I lived and now I don't know what to do. My teeth have moved in just 3 days. I can't get a new one cuz in Germany r so expensive 😭😭
Somewhat same happened with me too ,,,I was for my exams in another city & had no retainers for 3 days,,,,after 1 week of braces my got off ,,,the front tooth shifted forward & doesn't look good now,,,,it happened last April,,,,,I'm still regretting 😭😭😭😭
I find myself ugly 😭😭😭 between other people
I got a metal wire behind my teeth but my teeth are shifting and starting to twist outwards now. Suggestions??
Go in soon to your orthodontist so it doesn't get worse!
ok so i had braces for 2 years and wore my retainer every night for about 2 years after that. It might sound like i’m lying but about 2 1/2 months ago my dog chewed up my retainer (sucks very much) i moved abt an hour away from where i used to live so i have a new dentist and stuff. Do I ask my old orthodontist place if they still have the mold of my teeth and try to get a new retainer from them? (my mom says i shouldn’t bc my mouth is naturally bigger? idk) or should i get a new mold done at my new orthodontist and get a retainer that way? my teeth really haven’t shifted much from what i can tell but i’m really not sure. I do not know what to doo loll
my mom already has an appointment to get a new mold done but uhwhwjej idk i’m kind of iffy abt it and really think we should’ve called our old ortho and atleast asked if they still had my mold. do orthos usually keep past patients molds?
Stopped wearing it about two weeks after I got it bc it was so uncomfortable and now my mom tells me I have an appointment soon (it’s only been 1 yr) wtf do I do
Was it uncomfortable the first ever time your started wearing them?
@@ghostfave1216 yes of course which is normal but it just wouldn’t go away it sucked
I just got my retainer today and it's making me gag I hate it lol!! Also it hurts!

My retainers won't fit I had force I emailed my orthodontic clinic.
I haven't wear them for 6 month and now I have a gap 😭
Do they still fit?
i cant pay 500 to get a new retainer :/
Do you recommend a 45 Year old to get braces or Invisalign?
I prefer braces
