- Braces Explained: Molar Bands vs Molar Brackets in Orthodontics
In this video we will be answering “what is the difference between bands and brackets in orthodontics”?
Molar bands are metal rings that go around your back teeth that hug the tooth and have a slot for the wire on the cheek side. Molar bands come in many different sizes and configurations so two people that have bands likely wont have the same configuration. Some come with one wire slot, some come with two, and some even come with a larger hole in case your orthodontist needs to use headgear or a lip bumper. Molar bands generally have to be used if an appliance is needed like a TPA, lingual arch, expander, etc, since these appliances have to be soldered to the bands and cemented.
Molar brackets are like braces but for your molars. They are attached to only the cheek side of the tooth and are generally more simple with just one slot for your main archwire as well as a hookh in case you need to run elastics.
Both molar bands and brackets have a slot for the main archwire as well as a hook in case your orthodontist may need you to run elastics from the hooks. Although most of the time the use of bands vs brackets are based on the clinical preference of your orthodontist and how he/she treats cases, there are certain indications where one is required over the other.

Hello Dr. Greg! I was wondering about a molar band that I have on. There are two hooks on both sides of it. The hook inside keeps poking my tongue. I did not encounter that on this video. Thanks in advance!

Molar bands is a real pain on first few days, but the advantage is I can chew with less worries than tubes
Good point!!
How bad are they? I had the tubes but they kept coming off so now I have to get molar bands :(
Jayvee Pagkaliwagan does it get more comfortable afterwards , it’s my first day with them and it’s pushing against my cheek
Jayvee Pagkaliwagan Are you sure? I just got mine and it looks like a ring around my molars but it’s also above them I think. Can you bite? I feel like if you bite all you’ll do is expose bands to food and it’ll just feel like metal
Help!
JDM_VIDS How was it for u? Just got mine :(
I had bands on 4 molars and didn’t think it was too bad. The spacers were the worst part, I think.
A lot of people tend to say that!
Eliz L the spacers didn’t hurt
For me nothing ever hurt yay
I have 8 spacers on rn... They dont hurt for me but they are just really annoying ;-;
For me the spacers were just like a piece of food stuck between your teeth IT DIDN'T HURT AT ALL. After 2 days I got spacers I was put on the bands and didn't hurt as well but
I had like 3 SMALL cuts inside my mouth, I don't know if it's from the teeth impression but yeah next week I will get braces and I will update.
I just went to my consult and booked the fitting appointment and I knew exactly what he was on about thanks to your channel. Feeling super informed for this journey. 27 and finally straightening some overcrowding. 🥰🥰

me: sitting here without braces 👁👄👁
I get excited every time you upload a video😬💃🏻
woohoo! I have another one coming out in the morning to stay tuned!
I have regular brackets on my back teeth and I’m glad I didn’t have to get tubes (that I know of). My older coworkers were talking about people they knew in hs that had all tubes over all their teeth and then their teeth discolored.
In a future video you should talk about the history of braces so we can see how far we have come.
That would be fun right? I should do that!
how often did you break them? and how old were you when u got tubes instead of bands
I'm so happy I have a bracket and not a band. I hear spacers are really painful
AllycatlovesAG yeah, they are the worst part of the whole braces process :(
AllycatlovesAG I have 2 spacers in on my bottom teeth and in 3 weeks I’m getting my lower braces and a expander and my spacers don’t hurt at all
I have a combination of brackets and bands on my molars. I didn’t even notice the spacers to be honest. I was freaked out before I started orthodontic treatment because I kept reading how painful the spacers would be, but I didn’t even notice them. My back teeth aren’t crowded or super tight though, so that may be why.
Everyone has different experiences with spacers but glad you guys are all having a good braces journey!! =]
I have spacers and they don’t hurt that much
Not gonna lie, before I discovered this channel I was so nervous, scared and totally not looking forward to getting braces.(I’m getting them very soon, I do not know yet because they still have to make plans since I need surgery).
But when I discovered this channel and started watching these videos I’ve been looking forward to getting them, of course I still feel a tiny bit nervous but that kind of normal in my opinion.
「DefSOUL」 。 braces are not that bad but i have tad’s those are realy bad
Ah you are SO kind! I am glad that I've been able to help you out along your journey / decision making process. If there is anything you have a question with, feel free to stop by and I will try and help explain the procedure / appliance =]
Hey I've had my braces for I'm pretty sure around 5 years now (I don't understand why that long-i don't live in the USA either, cause I'm pretty sure I would've finished by now) Anywho, me wearing them isn't an obstruction at all, it just feels like a regular part of my mouth. There's really nothing to be afraid of after your surgery which I believe would be the toughest part of your journey. When I first got my braces (the ceramic ones) I didn't understand why ppl were fretting so much over them, but a few hours in, my teeth started moving and I was feeling the pressure. That pressure was only felt after an adjustment which may last about 3 days max, then I was Good till my next appointment which was a month away. Truth be told, I wish I'd done this procedure YEARS ago, so I would've been enjoying my straight teeth smile now. All in all, don't think of the right now, but where you would like your mouth and smile to be after the braces. I'm looking forward to that time, no regrets!
@@bezeebee hey! Have you still got those braces?
2 years now, do you still have your braces?

hey hailey, how was your journey up untill now? what did you get?
I am increasing my learning curve with your videos, Thank you Ortho Dentist.
Team Molar Tubes!!
My orthodontist was trying to bend the end of the wire on one adjustment and the force actually made the tube come off. She fixed it really quickly and otherwise I haven’t had any issues with them.
That's great!!
Thank you so much for sharing the video! Finally found a channel that answers to all my questions on braces:)
I have 4 metal bands that my orthodontist has placed on each side of the upper and lower jaw, it has been almost 2-3 months, but I can see that my molars with just the bands have shifted way out of alignment due to these, and the dentist keeps on cancelling appointments. Can you please suggest on what I can do and is it possible to have all the molars back to a straight alignment?
Hi! I've had braces for 3 months. Your channel has been of great help for my mental health since I was very scared. Thank you for dedicating time to explain things to us with such detail!
I also have a question, is it normal to get most work done by an assistant rather than your orthodontist? Mine just checks up on me for like 3 minutes and then she tells the assistant what to do and doesn't see me again for a month.
Ortho assistants have performed 99% of the work during my treatment too. Maybe it's because the office I go to sees 8-10 patients at a time. IDK.
Yup that is quite typical of an orthodontist set-up. Most of the orthodontists work is mental and he/she evaluates your case and provides the next steps to the assistant who executes those steps. As long as your orthodontist is checking your teeth out and providing insight to the assistant, they are aware of what is going on in your treatment!
@@DrGregAsatrian Manu thanks! I was kind of worried 😅
That’s a good question, I been wondering the same thing too. I noticed the assistants doing everything. I was thinking the Ortho didn’t want to pay attention to me. Thank you.

Thanks doctor for help me to learn every orthodontics process, I'm dental assistant. God bless you🤗
I just had my braces put on yesterday and spacers placed for future bands. My orthodontist had a difficult time getting the spacers to stay in place because the contacts were so tight between my teeth. He said they may not stay in place...one of them popped off this morning. We may have to do a different approach. He said if we can't get the bands to work we would just do the tubes but that would add a couple of months to my treatment time. Do you know why? Or is it just a safe guestimation?
P.S. I love this channel so much. I was doing a lot of research prior to getting my braces on and every time I searched a question, your videos popped up. They have been so helpful! So, thank you!
I have bands! I had brackets on one of my bottoms but it snapped off while i was sleeping ( im a clencher) so we swapped it over so now i have all 4 molars banded. Ive had them for 10months, totally used to them now.
That's so great!
I also have one bracket popped off while I was sleeping, but it was on my front tooth. Not sure if there's anything that can be done about it. I'm afraid it might happen again in the future... 😔
I have bands and they are really stubborn with cleaning. Especially when something gets in-between my two bands and the wire
I know theyre tough! I'm going to make a video on some tips for that! Stay tuned
Heya doc, can I ask something?
Is it okay to have a space between the molar band the gums? I'm afraid it would cause cavities, since my teeth are somewhat fragile... (and it's kinda sharp, since it was cut to fit my tooth shape, so it hurts my tongue a bit)
Thanks!
Love your videos! I have a question i know that after 3 times a bracket breaks they charge you but is it the same for the metal bands?
why don't they put a bracket on the very back tooth?
Well every patient is different
Umm I have a bracket on every. Single. Tooth. Even the last ones. And tbh I don't even use them bcz they're so far back 😂 literally in my throat
Really depends on your case and the timing of your orthodontist!
Braces Explained wisdom teeth? Idk if ur talking about that but we get them taken out,so that's why?Idk
I have had braces since March and I didnt have a bracket on there until june.
Got my braces tightened and it wasn’t as bad as I thought!! Getting a coil spring in between my front teeth to separate them for surgery!
Interesting! You should definitely keep us posted on your progress!
Update: no coil spring but they put a new wire over my top teeth that don’t reach on either side why is that?
I have 3 molar bands. Just yesterday I notice that my top molar band has split on one side partially .. I used my finger to kind of bend it together because there was a small space I kept feeling with my tongue ... It doesn’t seem to be causing any issue and it’s still in place , do you think I can wait 4 weeks until my next appointment ?
Learned so much. Can you please make a video of “Sheath band“. Thank you
I have molar tubes and I’m very thankful for them... spacers are so uncomfortable!
That's great!
Spacers were the worst part of getting braces, even worst than the teeth extractions. But I'm so glad I have the bands , because my boyfriend who also has braces got brackets already broke like 3 of them !
Oh no! Haha that's good that yours are holding up!
Can you do a specific video on each as I'm getting bands and don't know what to expect
The cleats on these bands hurt sooooo bad! Hate them, but glad to see a picture of them, and to have a name. They are driving me nuts.
I have 4 molar bands and I notice 3 of them have lingual cleats (on the inner side of the molar band) and the other 1 does not. Any reasons for this?
I have one with cleat, but haven't used it yet. I have an uneven jaw, so I guess it'll be used to realign my bottom jaw by pulling it to the opposite side 🤷🏻♀️
I got my braces on for about 2 weeks now, and I got molar tubes. At first I thought that molar bands is the only option for braces but I discovered that there is another option which is the molar tubes.
I don't worry that much that I could lost my molar tubes, given the fact that I always cut my big foods such as meat into smaller pieces.
Hey , I wanted to asked one question
There is a breakage in my molar bracket , it was simply attached to my teeth means without that round bracket , will it affect the movement of my front teeths or any other affect???
Hi Doctor, Question, I am having DJS soon, the surgeon requires a molar bands, however, I have a bridge on my upper left molar. Is there a way to have a molar bands on a bridge? Thank you!
Ugh I hated my molar bands so much! Took two months to get used to them. They still bother me sometimes on the tongue side.
I have both brackets and bands and it took a while to get use to the bands because they hurt pretty bad, but I’ve them on for about 3 months now and it’s like there not even there. My teeth are moving pretty fast and I love that! Could you do a video about elastics in more detail, I watched the other one you did but can u do a video on different types of elastics
Great request on different types of elastics!
You watched my video on elastics? What would you like me to go into more detail with? like different ways of wearing it or ??
Braces Explained yes I’d like to see different types of elastics and how they are worn and what each different elastic does.
Can u do a video talking about how springs work ❤️
Hi! I wonder if my orthodontist will allow me if I ask to have molar bands instead of bracket? I'm just really having trouble with the brackets because most of the time it detaches 😔
Have you done a video on interproximal reduction? I have to get that done on the 18th of April and I'm a tad bit nervous.

Hey, may I ask. Is it nessceray to have a the tube or band for the molar, or can you have braces without moler brackets, only wire, rubber band and brackets?
Its my first few hours with bands and already had my right upper side of my cheek all cut up and bleeding from the band. You can see particles of my cheek on the band. Is this normal for the first few days? Thanks in advance
i got braces yesterday and i broke two molar brackets :( i went to my orthodontist and he just clipped the extra wire and did not replace the molar brackets back on idk why but he said at my next appointment that i will get bands but is having molar brackets on important
I have 4 molar bands, and one of them have cleat. It constantly grazed my tongue and was very uncomfortable for the first few days 😭
I got my braces last month and Im already done with the 1st adjustment/tightening but I dont still have these molar band/buccal tube. Is it okay?
Hey, I would like to ask what would happen and what is the best thing to do my molar tubes (upper left & lower right) had fallen but my new orthodontist still has it. They are waiting for my response what to do I think, but I had lost contact of my old othrodontist that was on another country so I only have the option here at the new but don't know what to tell them. I have Self-ligating and about less than a year since I got them. almost a month without the 2 molar tubes not on my teeth. Thanks -Toshiya
My question is does it make a difference in the final result? (Note: I have the bracket one)
Very curious to know too
Nope! No difference int he final case. Simply a different tool to get to the same destination

I have bands on 6 teeth (4 on top and 2 on bottom) and one in particular is extremely painful it feels like it’s lodged into my gum and it’s extremely irritated and inflamed. I’ve had braces for 8 months and for the first 4 I had an expander and I thought that was the only reason I had those bands. Now that I don’t have an expander, is it really necessary to have the band especially if it’s causing me so much pain?
Which one would you recommend Dr ,bonding a molar tube or a molar band on a root canal treated lower 2nd molar which has received a zirconia crown?

is it true that molar bands have to be taken out once a year and then put back in just to check on your tooth underneath and avoid any damage to it? just saw a video of another dr saying that and now im concerned because ive had mine for almost 2 years.
since I have a Damon system,I have a bracket on my molars. those bands look like a torture device 😸
Most damon patients don't need bands, you're right!
I have a band on one tooth because I broke the tube off.... from a french fry 🤦♀️
When I first got braces I broke brackets on crazy things like a chicken nugget and a pop tart, but I haven’t broken a bracket in a while now that my teeth are in a less vulnerable position.

Dr Greg, can u request your Dentist to use brackets for molars instead of bands? Or is that something they decide based on what they think you need? seems like bands are hard to clean :C
They decide based on your clinical need. You can express a preference and they can let you know if it is OK

Edit: it's so hard to eat my teeth hurt, the molar band even scrapes my tounge
I have moler bands. SPACERS ARE THE WORST. Now how do I know what they will do with these Molar Bands? I am panicking if I need head gear or anything else attached inside my mouth. I have a huge gap on my top front teeth. But no extractions, extra teeth, missing teeth, etc. Just plenty of space. . . Any clue ?
Impossible for me to tell - there are so many things that go into the decision making process for treatment that I cant answer from just that!
What hurts more molar bands or spacers?
Hello! So today my ortho did some rearrangements on some brackets and actually added a bracket on my upper left last molar. Im wondering why they did that? My second to last molars have a band but now my very last molar has a bracket. What is the reason for this? Is it to align my last molar tooth? Does this usually happen towards the end of treatment? 🤔
For me my molar seems too small for the metal bands because the bands are too long. This is the case for the two bands on the right side which makes it so when I bite down my left side doesn't even touch. Is this normal, or should i check it out at the orthodontist?
Molar bands really hurt😓

I have got molar bands, and my braces treatment is coming to an end, so i have a concern that when my molar bands are taken off what is gonna happen to the gaps that were made to put the molar bands. When i asked my orthodontist about the gaps, he said that the gaps will close on its own and he is gonna take off my braces without closing the gaps. He have done the same thing with one of my friend saying the same thing that the gaps will close on its own and it been 2 months he still has the gap and always has trouble with food particles getting stuck. What should i do? Please help. Thank you.
