Penny didn’t grow up with a fear of the dark or the Boogyman in her closet. No, she grew up with the fear of the colourful and innocent balloon. Now in her late 20s, Penny and her therapist go back to the memory where she was kidnapped at her birthday by serial killer Poppy the Clown. It was the most haunting play date of her life. After her session she must stay indoors, for today is the anniversary of the killers death and people are running around dressed up as him. Penny slips into a deep sleep leading to a nightmare filled with a world of balloons and the ghost of Poppy. There, she learns what happened to him as a child and is pulled out of her nightmare by her therapist. However... Her therapist may end up being scarier than anything in her nightmares.

I was reading the book "IT". We were sitting on the curb and I was enjoying the book and I hear a "honking" noise and my son saying "LOOK LOOK" so when I looked up THERE WAS A CLOWN IN MY FACE! I freaked the hell out. I pulled my son in my lap. The clown pointed to my book AND DIED LAUGHING. I felt so embarrassed.......hahahahahahaa

She had that dream of the clown telling her she was supposed to have been the tenth. what if that was the birthday he first killed? his tenth birthday, the tenth victim? and her tenth birthday, marred by the kidnapping and near death at the hands of a clown serial killer? But then it goes deeper. what if it is not a dream at all? what if in fact at the moment he died, since he did not complete his cycle, the spirit of the clown transferred itself into her mind? a mind so fractured by the trauma she unconsciously took up his cause, and when presented with a circumstance in which to finally complete what he truly wanted, she could not control herself and the spirit of the clown took over, killing the representation of his tenth victim? it was not the understanding he wanted but the death of that special victim number ten. but the doctor did not realize this until it was far, far too late to stop it from happening.

Well, right before the last scene in which he made her take the position of the psycho clown herself, when he announced that she had one more step to takt, I thought he would be trying to take advantage of her, maybe try to make her fuck him to overcome her fear of the clown - which would result into her snapping and killing him. But after we see the role Change, yes, it was pretty obvious that he wouldn't survive this. Actually, that was an almost equally stupid therapeutical move, especially after how she reacted to the prior "exposition training".
This came out before the New IT movie, but it came out after the old one JUST SAYING

This is really good, especially the ending. It's interesting/heartbreaking that the serial killer ended up passing his issues (fear of clowns and balloons) to Penny and the therapist pushed her too far and she ended up becoming like Poppy.

Okay, so I kinda think the therapist deserved this. Lemme explain why, and no, it isn't just because he gave her a real knife. Talking about childhood trauma? Perfectly fine. Re-enacting confrontation with the cause of the trauma through hypnosis maybe? Honestly, kind of questionable, but I can see that happening in a therapist's office with the right person. This guy isn't the right person, which I will elaborate on soon. Now, forcing her to try to understand a clown serial killer? That's kind of fucking weird. Asking someone to empathize with a cause of trauma is something I could see, but forcing her to re-enact her childhood trauma, with her as the causer of it? Are you insane?
I don't think the therapist even actually wants to help her. He seems like a fanatic who's close to going through his own string of copycat murders. He put on the makeup and gloves just to "help" her, and that scene in the bathroom... being totally honest, she looks like she's dissociating and the therapist is just, swabbing or making up her face. What I get from his vibes is that he's a fan of the serial killer in some regard, so when she couldn't act it out, he got frustrated, yelling at her to go through with it. I think him mentioning the documentary is a hint.
The therapist was more fascinated by the case than he was in helping her heal. He watched the documentary on the case countless times he said. He was fanboying over it, exciting to pretend to roleplay.

I honestly love clowns and other things that most would find relatively creepy or disgusting. That aside, I love this short. Shows how far fear and trauma can drive a person.

Cool Short; properly atmospheric in most parts, excellent cinematography, great set designs, and topnotch sound mix. Storyline was rather predictable, but for a Short, it worked well. The acting of Erin Kiniry, as well as Angelique Wiesner I found to be standouts and impressive.
