The acting emotion when Shawn got mad at Ben for leaving the house as Ben was supposed to be watching the box was pretty powerful. You can really hear the mixture of the initial sadness of the doom Rachael is about to face followed by the sheer transition to anger for realizing that Ben didn't listen and then rage that Ben didn't listen again during that call.
Came to rewatch it and I just noticed something: As they're cooking in the beginning, the guy keeps telling her to watch the sauce. This is subtly foreshadowing the rules of the box. This short is brilliantly written.
Love how Shaun gave a less that minimal amount of info or instructions on how to keep the man in the box still and then gets mad when Ben actually doesn't understand it like a normal person would💀
@@PureenergyriftTo be fair, Sean wanted to murder Ben (or whatever the box people do, I personally think they drag you into the box void and you become one of them)
well you also have to think about how the box came, we can assume the thing didn't even appear, there's no way Sean would've been not looking at it if he had transferred it to Ben, and he didn't even know it could speak, he literally had minimal knowledge of the box and Ben lied about who was there, if Sean had the information he probably would've told him specifically who had to look, but since he was told Ben was alone, he said "You". The context is really what sealed their fate, Sean gave what he knew, Ben looked away, the box gained a voice, the thing tricked Ben, the thing then became a family and escaped.
I would've called the cops right away. Usually in paranormal films, the issue is proving to authorities you're not crazy. But in this scenario, you can't deny a creepy guy peeking out at you from a box. Or I would've tried hurting it while it was still in the box.
And both of them doesnt taking that box outside the house at the moment they realize that it was a hole, is very hard to believe. (but the movie is amazing)
no but think about it, shaun mustve seen it too, yet when he brought it to them, it wasnt apparent until it was too late, so that suggests it has some awareness and its likely when the cops arrived it wouldn’t appear to be there, unless it just ended up with more victims through each person who saw it becoming trapped to stare at it.
The fact that it WAITED until Rachel was alone. There were so many moments where Ben was looking away and it could have moved but it didn't to confuse them about the rules and make them think they'd both be safe.
@@samsonboldizar7290 i dont think so, the thing is obviously smart enough to do that on purpose since it purposefully lied to them about what sean said, the thing planned it all along or else it wouldnt have said that
My jaw dropped when Sean started screaming at Ben saying he was the one supposed to look at the box, this is one of the greatest short horror films on RUclips, their acting was absolutely phenomenal.
Brilliant. "I told YOU to not look away from the box." The unknown of whatever happened to Rachel is frightening enough. Beautifully filmed and great acting. Thank you for taking the time to create this short film. You have the gift so please keep going.
All about the ending sequence was masterful. The entity appearing in the mirror as long as the guy is looking at it just to vanish in a single shot. My god horror at its best.
I have more questions like... What really transpired between the two guys that made Shawn say, that's water beneath the bridge. Was Shawn dating her first? or was there a bad brawl??. Like I'm left wondering, The way Shawn intentionally told the guy to open the box before reading the letter. He wanted him to DIE.
@@myivyfindstore I just keep wondering about that thing and Shown, we asumed Shawn give the box to ben because he couldn't take it anymore, and the only solution was to give it away BUT HOW IN HELL HE COULD PUT THE GUY INSIDE AGAIN?! Or why the thing in the box didn't want shawn
@@myivyfindstore I’m also confused why Shawn told Ben not to go back even if it seems he gave the box too Shawn for the purpose of it causing harm to him. But during the phone call, Shawn didn’t want Ben to go back? Like don’t you want the guy to get hurt?
The silent turn around in the car after Shawn screams “You have to keep your eyes on it” will always astound me how simple a scene can be, but portray such power
You know they did a good job when people are in the comments section theorising things about it. I want to know how Shaun survived it and managed to give it away.
I love how it moved so slowly to begin with in order to give them a false sense of security. Then later it becomes evident that it can move faster than you can comprehend
Letting us (the viewers and characters) establish our own rules on how it works, only to reveal it was just fucking with us and those rules aren't true is always fun in horror when done right.
Lol, she acted like no girl in the world would. "Oh, look honey, there's a head of a weird scary dude staring at as, bizarre right? I'll just wait here, at night, with the strange magical creep while you go find your friend who's not answering your calls." XD
11:15 GOD idk why but the delivery from Shawn’s actor just gives me goosebumps cause Ben just realized the severity of the situation and we realize that Rachel probably died (or whatever the thing did to her) the second Ben took off
@rarescevei8268 that's also what I was thinking. Especially considering that there's multiple people in the box, and the film is literally called other side of the box
“Why is it looking at you like that?” I thought that was one of the scariest lines of dialogue in the film. I put myself in Ben’s position and imagine I would have been absolutely terrified by the fact that it was looking at ME in such a menacing way. Similar to when I meet someone’s pet that for some odd reason doesn’t like me and the owner says something like “that’s weird, she/he usually likes everyone”. It makes me think “what does that animal see or sense that makes it feel this way about me? Is there something wrong with me? What did I do?”
It’s hard to describe, but this fear is one of the worst to me. There is nothing to do to fix it, nothing to explain it, but somehow you are in danger and a single pair of dull black eyes are staring at you. I don’t think i would be able to save myself in this situation if i was Ben. I watched a movie called Coraline, where a little girl was in danger because she was stuck in an identical world with a monster who pretended to be her mother. The feeling of that is similar to this. Why my mother? Why trap me? (sorry for poor english)
thats been happening to me a lot lately. dogs that I know and that used to love me started being weird. iv had a run of bad luck. my own dogs are acting strange to other dogs. things just don't feel right.
All jokes aside this is one of the best horrors ive ever seen. No dramatic music, just ambience with a few sharp notes here and there to highlight. The atmosphere is perfect, dark and creepy. Theres also underlying themes that you might not pick up the first time--"youre getting me wet!" "Water under the bridge" and the thing's apparent need for water. Ben lies to Shawn, the thing lies to Ben. Although it evidently isnt a lie because when Ben left the house the thing was able to escape. The fact that there are multiple box-things, either they could be previous victims or simply other beings from whatever dimension the box leads to. So many questions, it doesnt answer but there are many implications. This should be the standard for all horror films.
This is a smart monster even when it had the chance to move it didn’t because it wanted them to think that anyone could look at it then it waited for him to leave the house before it was finally ready to attack
Yeah i’m late but theory here, Racheal definitely was taken within the box. The people that were on the stairs are all victims that looked away from the box. Racheal looked like she was on the stairs during the last part. Once you’re in the box it’s like it traps and converts you into one of them. I absolutely love this
Great analysis.
@@myivyfindstore that’s what i’m saying! I feel as if they were friends but both had feelings for the same girl maybe shawn before the other dude but it was fair game. It’s obvious they both deeply cared for her
@@myivyfindstore how did Shawn know anything about what's in the box without opening it though? And if he did open it then how did he survive and reseal it?
Didn’t you notice how happy Shaun was after he realized that Rachel wasn’t in the house at the beginning. The box was intended for him not Rachel. Probably jealous. The box takes you in. Now it took Rachel. He probably wanted Rachel back and delete the guy
@@orphansshouldunalivethemse846 I suppose at this point it didn't matter, as Reachel was dead, I guess he didnt want him to just also die. Also I have a bit different theory...

@@tjavila2076 I’m guessing she was one of those people on the stairs and the guy in the box changed her into what he was. So when he trapped him the other people on the stairs were like other people he’s changed

rip whatever they were cooking, prolly meatloaf (i do not know what that is i’m italian i just know it’s americans’ childhood food and everyone hates it somehow)
@@lim3eE3American here, I don't think meatloaf is actually that disliked by many who already eat meat. I do think we write a lot of jokes about hating meatloaf thinking about it now but its just a loaf of ground beef and breadcrumbs covered in some kind of sauce. Is it amazing? It can be but usually it's just okay. I think between it being a pretty basic and boring dish to make as well as its name, meatloaf, its easy to make fun of. I think also, it being so easy to make, part of the joke is that it's made way more often than it should so a kid gets sick of it after awhile. TLDR: The hate for meatloaf is probably played up more than it is actually hated here.
This is absolutely the best short film I have seen, it has no blood, no screaming just the silence and suspense, this is something makes you want more that’s exactly what we want in the suspense cinema, it’s just amazing
This is a perfect example for great psychological horror. It's given real fear, not just fear of jump scares. Even in the short amount of time, you bond with the characters in some way. And by the end of it all, you're left with more questions than answers. This is an absolutely amazing film! Definitely one of my favorites!
The best part was when they thought they figured it out and had the girl watch the box. It was horrifying to hear the friend explain on the phone that HE had to be the one to watch the box and only him.
@@Mr_Flerb I assume the friend conjured up some demon. It seems he was still in love with his ex. So if Ben was responsible for watching the box, there was a chance he would be consumed eventually & the "friend" gets his girl back.
@@cademancaden Yeah, but even if he summoned it rather than having been given it himself (which is how I read it), he still had to have experienced some of it, based on the contents of the letter.
I feel like it being a shortfilm is kind've a positive, although yea I completely agree with the amazing concept. Many movies with good ideas can become kind've bad though cause they stretch it out too much
This is the real horror movie that i'm talking about. No jumpscare. No overused of background music. Please make the story longer . this is what i want to watch in a big screen.
I think this is the perfect length for it. Remember how they made a movie out of 'Lights Off', and it just wasnt as good. What we *could* have in cinemas is an anthology of such shorts. That would be brilliant (imagine, the lights come on at the end of the movie, and you're the only one sitting in the theatre)
Oh let's leave my wife with a random demonic box. What could go wrong. Just fking take the box with you🤦♂️. PS: I have a duck video, a chicken video...Also a patreon
@@iwanttobeabillionaire1703 Yeah taking a box that moves when you aren't watching it into a car is such a great idea. Totally not unsafe in any way shape or form.
Right? Finally people you understand the difference between scary and disgusting. A person's guts are getting ripped out doesn't make things scary, it just makes it gross.
Agreed, and that he showed such distress a disparity in being able able to explain things (you could tell he was struggling) and didn’t do the whole “there’s no time to explain” trope.
Imagine if the reason why Shawn told him not to go back is because Ben's house was being turned into "bigger box"? Shawn told the thing to not let him leave the house, and it was making the house more hospitable for it to survive, water and darkness.
Makes sense for the most part, but Shawn never said to not leave the house, it was just the box copying and using his voice like it does later with the wife. It was to trick the husband into leaving
Does it need water and darkness to survive? It seemed like it just turned off all the lights so Ben couldn't see it. And sure, it is really weirdly wet, but also it probably just turned on the sink to lure Ben further down into the basement. Meanwhile in the kitchen, it seems like it presumably just stabbed the girl with the knife and then cleaned the blood off of it.
Not all fear is caused by the unknown. Who the hell told you that, And no its not so scary because its never fully revealed to us. Its so scary because its a box with fucking people inside it. Not that deep. Stop trying to make it as deep as the box.
Oh my gosh yeah!! The suspense is so high, and my brain can’t picture a thing, it’s just- like a pure feeling. An animal, or monster, that people can identify isn’t as scary as the unknown.
it's crazy, it was even the monster using sean's voice to admit to them that it wanted ben to leave they played right into its hands , while staring straight at it, so it couldn't have gotten them if they hadn't been such goofballs
This is the first time in an exceptionally long time that a horror film left me feeling genuinely unsettled hours after watching it. I saw it last night and couldn't get rid of this subtle dread in my chest. This is exactly what a horror is supposed to do. This film was fantastic.
I felt the exact same, regular don't really scare me anymore because of how predictable they've become but this literally made me so scared after watching it.
Just take a second to award them, no cheesy acting, no unnecessary jumpscares or gore, nothing far fetched, just a beautiful horror movie that they put their heart into. Great job guys, this is amazing
I honestly might seem messed up for this, but if I were the guy I wouldnt go back to the house. His “friend” kinda scared me when he yelled “DONT GO BACK TO THE HOUSE!” I would have been like “u dont gotta tell me twice”
I wouldn't blame you either. There was no point in him going back to the house at that stage. He had no weapons, only a flashlight. And of course, he was facing a literal demon. It's not like he knew how to defeat it. At the very least he could have called the police and a priest and had them meet him outside the front door before all going in.
I don't think it mattered anymore, really. It was out of the box. It could literally do anything it wants as long as Ben...and ONLY Ben... doesn't look. ...maybe. Who knows, maybe it can't leave the house.
@@winterstar5189 it wasn’t his friend, Shawn used to date that girl. Maybe they cheated and ended up together. Dude had a broken heart and wanted to get back at them
It's always the fear of the unknown that is the scariest. And when that unknown looks so like us, it makes it even more terrifying. Also, the box man/creature looks a little like Hbomberguy which made me chuckle.
What's even more scary is how inanimate the thing in the box is. You stare at it at and seems to be just another object, almost like a mannequin, it doesn't respond to words or touch, but yet it's eyes move and it moves when you're not looking at it.
Oh how cute.... little coddled, everyone gets a trophy, live "your truth", gutless wonder doesn't like "blood or violence" in a fucking horror movie.... so pathetic
@@Simple_Jackass Thats abit much, not that theres anything wrong with bloody blood uber violence but honestly too often its gratuitous and desensitizing to the true horror. Some of the greatest horror movies of all time have very little blood or violence and there was a time when it was nice to have a kind of horror palate cleanser between blood fests and vice versa. I wont go so far as to call you pathetic but you do sound like an entitled ignorant child that thinks way too much of themselves and who, in a world where everyone gets a trophy maybe didnt get one and just lives life now 🤬💩 on other people
8:13 - that was such a moment in hindsight. It completely fooled them. "Well, that could have been worse." What a perfect way to lull them into a false sense of "I guess we can handle this!" to separate them. The amount of times Ben actually looked away in the beginning but it stayed - JUST to wait out until they could attack them one by one. When the guy screamed that it was lying to them, the nonchalance of the beginning felt 10x more sinister.
your observation is exceptional, when he let them look at each other for almost 2 seconds he just gently took out his fingers to make them believe that he was slow, the moment they did their test I said to myself that the "thing" in the box could perhaps move much faster and with each blink of an eye, until the "it was you" on the phone made me understand the extent of the lie, only the guy's look was effective.
The psychological horror that messes with your brains with the hanging answers the uncomfy stare of it and the use of water to confuse the watcher amazing
SPOILERS: The scariest thing is how clever the box-monster is when you think about it. It could've moved in the moments where Ben was turned away and it was just Rachel looking at it, but it didn't. It wanted to lull them into a false sense of security and make them think that if someone other than Ben was looking at it, then it couldn't move. By doing this, it tricks Ben into thinking he can go out to find Shawn and leave Rachel with it, not knowing that he's pretty much leaving his girlfriend to be attacked and have who-knows-what done to her.
Yeah I think the issue with horror movies is that the run time is too long and can be drawn out, and they try to focus more on story telling when in reality, not everything needs to be explained or to make sense, its the fear of the unknown thats most common afterall.
I think it's more the mysteriousness and tension of not knowing the whole plot or a setting to it compared to a longer film where you need a plot and a setting
It gave him enough hints that Ben was supposed to look at the box. Every time Ben moved it’s eyes followed. Rachel even said why is it staring at YOU like that. And then it whispered something about Ben leaving the house and then she repeated it that it didn’t want him to leave the house. And then my man’s literally got cornered. Man, that was amazing!
@@MyZ001 It wanted Ben to leave the house so it could move. Ben looking at it stops it from being able to move. Shawn wrote it in the note but they ignored it because it "echoed" Shawn saying "just Ben. Don't let him leave the house" and it knew that Ben would take that to mean that leaving the house would be a good thing since staying in the house is the bad thing that Shawn wants.

“Why is it looking at you like that?”
I thought that was one of the scariest lines of dialogue in the film.

I am burning the box

Thats what I was thinking
This some big brain shit
Makes sense for the most part, but Shawn never said to not leave the house, it was just the box copying and using his voice like it does later with the wife. It was to trick the husband into leaving
Makes sense cuz all the sinks and showers were turned on and the light switches were ripped off the wall/circuit

The psychological horror that messes with your brains with the hanging answers the uncomfy stare of it and the use of water to confuse the watcher amazing
Fuck psychological horror. This is psychological warfare

Moral of the story: do not let evil people back into your life because you want to be "nice" or be "the bigger person"
Needed to hear this👏🏾
You managed to come up with a cringy story moral after all...

How TF do you know who evil people? What if you don’t believe that this kind of “evil” exist? Your moral has multiple loopholes
The guy on the phone has some of the best scared acting I’ve seen. The dread i feel when hes screaming that only ben needs his eyes on it is crazy
This needs to be a whole movie. This is probably the best short horror story I’ve ever seen. Great job.
Man on a train is way better watch it
nah
Better yet this should be the Box Assassin
@@ins4nutty341 lol man on a train is like Cinderella compared to this I’ve never seen anything like this
It would lose its charm if it was forced to pad out time for a whole movie.
I’m never complaining again about my relatives giving me socks for Christmas
Same 😭
even better for me that they give me nothing.
Bro I absolutely love getting socks for Christmas, idk why, just something about socks on Christmas is amazing 😂

SPOILERS:
The scariest thing is how clever the box-monster is when you think about it.
No shit

The way the box man stares is so unsettling i havent been that disturbed since i saw signs when i was a kid
Am I the only one who watches short horror films because 9 times out of 10 they’re better than their longer movie counterparts?!?
Yeah I think the issue with horror movies is that the run time is too long and can be drawn out, and they try to focus more on story telling when in reality, not everything needs to be explained or to make sense, its the fear of the unknown thats most common afterall.
its because concepts are cool and scary with you to fill in the gaps with imagination, but a lot of concepts make for bad movies
Horror is ephemeral.
me too
I think it's more the mysteriousness and tension of not knowing the whole plot or a setting to it compared to a longer film where you need a plot and a setting
"it doesn't want Ben to leave the house"
Ben: Aight, Imma head out. You stay here the supernatural creature in a box😆
So what happened to her?
@@Enryu_CZX we don't know but i think it's best we don't.

My personal (late) realization at 12:47 that the reason it pulled the lights is that you can’t see/stop it if it’s dark enough was the scariest part
