  • Kevin Bouchard Hall, pro-Zwift racer and pro-Dad, is here to teach Ted, newbie-Zwift racer and neo-Dad, how to maximize his time on the trainer.
Kevin Bouchard Hall is a former US national team stand-out, but he decided that unless he was making it to the Pro Tour, he'd rely on his intelligence to move forward in life so he stepped away from cycling. Now married with two beautiful boys, the Bouchard Hall family is busy as it gets, so Kevin is as well. After a hiatus from racing he's back on the scene, but now storming Zwift at all odd hours of the day.
Kevin and Ted are gravel racing buds and as a throwback to their collegiate racing days when they battled it out, they're doing so on gravel bikes all across New England and beyond.
Ted and Kevin are both riding Saris H3 trainers with the Saris MP1 platform underneath them for the added realistic feeling of bike moving under you.
Kevin has the Velocio Unity Jersey and Ted has the Velocio Indoor kit featuring the Radiator Tank and the Ultralight shorts.

    ZWIFT TIPS:
    1. Throw down big watts right out of the gate.
    2. Figure out how to float in the pack.
    3. Be ready to go berserk on every climb, big or small.
    4. Aero Power-Up is best for sprinting.
    5. Work on your efficient drift through the pack.
    6. Set your priorities correctly.
    7. Don't accidentally get dropped!
    8. Save your feathers for the hills.
    9. Keep it all in perspective.
    10. Know the course.

Great video - many of us lost to KBH at the 2018 Blackfly Challenge by a “fair margin” (he was on his 3rd beer as we arrived) so watching him at work in a lab setting was very interesting! I didn’t know he was also an intellectual and a pleasant chap though - this ruins my former image of him as an odd Adirondack recluse who raced all day Lolol. Ted you’d enjoy the BFC - it’s the very opposite of an endurance event - all out for 60km - but the chaos and before and after make the event very worthwhile. More vids like this pls !

Super nice video! Really enjoyed it.
Can't give you advice on being a cyclist, but here"s my insight on being a dad : the biggest change is that free time doesn't exist anymore.
You can have your own time, sure. But it"s not free anymore. It has a cost because someone (e.g wife, nanny, grand parents...) has to take care of the kid(s).
It makes a huge difference in the perception you have of your time.
And also : with one kid you are a couple with a kid, still outgoing and fully active. If/when you reach 2 kids, you become a family and everything settles down no matter what.
Good luck and enjoy, you will soon be entering a new part of your life!
(Dad of four children between 6 and 2 years old)

As a dad of a two (an almost 2 year old, and a 6 week old) I think you have hit the nail on the head here. I can't believe the step up in having two, hence why I'm here researching zwift kit. Getting any time alone on the bike during daylight hours seems near impossible at the moment. That too will change, but in the meantime - Zwift!

Great video. This race seems very soft for an A though. On a B race over the same distance I had to put in 371W just to stay with the front pack and finish towards the back of it. Weight plays a factor, but I can't understand these figures being so so much lower. Anyway - thanks again for a good video

Use the Frankfert or frank something method. That’s how I “cheat” on Zwift. Do small burst of high cadence for at least 3 seconds if you can and then rest. For example I noticed that when I am steadily pedaling say 100rpm and doing 250 watts I feel that I am going faster and it’s easier than putting the chain in the big ring and “pushing” on the pedals like in the real world. So, when I see there is a small hill and say I have it in the 34-17, I drop two or one gears and I pedal as fast as I can for at least 3 seconds and then I change it back to 34-17. That “push” it’s enough to gain at least an extra 250 to 300 wats for 3 seconds or 4 and that it’s enough to go up a small hill.
I think it’s because the way Zwift works. Zwift forces you to pedal at a higher cadence because instead of torque it works by a magnetic resistance so when that drum or disc is rolling really fast and say you are about to go a hill it will take about one or two seconds to the trainer to adjust the resistance to mimic the gradient,. I noticed that flaw and I use it to my advantage, (Elite drivo )

I do notice that a lot on Zwift though when comparing pro cyclist to pro zwifters (?). seems using more watts ( big efforts) can be more of a detriment than guys that use more triathlon style sustained/controlled efforts, even when they try to bridge a gap...totally counterintuitive for someone that raced for a living, where youre constantly putting in huge efforts to bring back attacks or bridging up to someone ...?
