- Kevin Bouchard Hall, pro-Zwift racer and pro-Dad, is here to teach Ted, newbie-Zwift racer and neo-Dad, how to maximize his time on the trainer.
Kevin Bouchard Hall is a former US national team stand-out, but he decided that unless he was making it to the Pro Tour, he'd rely on his intelligence to move forward in life so he stepped away from cycling. Now married with two beautiful boys, the Bouchard Hall family is busy as it gets, so Kevin is as well. After a hiatus from racing he's back on the scene, but now storming Zwift at all odd hours of the day.
Kevin and Ted are gravel racing buds and as a throwback to their collegiate racing days when they battled it out, they're doing so on gravel bikes all across New England and beyond.
Ted and Kevin are both riding Saris H3 trainers with the Saris MP1 platform underneath them for the added realistic feeling of bike moving under you.
Kevin has the Velocio Unity Jersey and Ted has the Velocio Indoor kit featuring the Radiator Tank and the Ultralight shorts. Спорт
Ted yelling at his computer screen, then asking if they can hear him was golden.
You're becoming a dad alright bro 😊👍
I like how Kevin can have a nonchalant conversation while pushing 500 watts.
I was literally just thinking the same thing and was about to write this. LOL Love it! I only wish I could push HALF that, and still talk. :D
@@mr.motiv8 Delayed response to anaerobic work
So like, the feather is like a lance armstrong hub motor button? Like the remote he pressed in 2005 tour prologue? Sewn into the rear left side of his shorts?
thats just above his ftp tho so it aint that hard for him
Two Dads Inside Riding Trainers (DIRT) - make this a series!
Hong Quan it is a series now! In Zwift
It's not often you find a Cat A zwifters who is also a Cat 1 dad.
This is the1st Zwift race I've actually enjoyed watching
mike kunnecke you should check out vegan cyclist vs pro body builder vid. Hilarious 😂
@@daviddang82 That video was awesome , enjoyed it so much and the pain from the bodybuilder😆
Same here. Great content. Entertaining and great production. Is Zwift the “ONLY” game in town or just the best. Love to see that comparison video if there is one.
I think I came away more impressed with Kevin's familyman skills. That was fun to watch.
ZWIFT TIPS:
1. Throw down big watts right out of the gate.
2. Figure out how to float in the pack.
3. Be ready to go berserk on every climb, big or small.
4. Aero Power-Up is best for sprinting.
5. Work on your efficient drift through the pack.
6. Set your priorities correctly.
7. Don't accidentally get dropped!
8. Save your feathers for the hills.
9. Keep it all in perspective.
10. Know the course.
Soon-to-be-father here, too, and I've been Zwifting for the last 2.5 years. Zwift racing has been the single biggest contributor towards my winter fitness and has not only made indoor training bearable, but fun. Hope to see you on the virtual roads, Ted, and congrats on the little one on the way.
Thanks for the video. Having a coach during the race and right next to you makes a big difference. More videos please.
Love the faces they were pulling toward the end!
I can't believe you can have a conversation while pushing those wattages. I feel so weak and pathetic. Still, I very much enjoyed the show. Thank you.
Awesome! I was in that race too, I got back on after the climb but you put 20 seconds into me in the last KM :D great work
This was SO good, Ted and KBH!
This race was awesome. Picked up a number of excellent tips!
Wow. Your production setup is on point. Very easy to want to watch.
This was highly entertaining and educational at the same time. Nice work!
I enjoyed this. I was never interested in Zwift, now I will give it a try.
great video! like the side by side and tips!! thank you.
Very entertaining. Great introduction of your friend Kevin and his experience with family and training.
Ted! Once you have children your life and priorities totally change. All for the better person you will be. There may be times you'll look back at your childhood and apologise to your parents.
NICU nurse here. Think burrito when you swaddle.
Excellent! Some solid advice and fun to watch.
Really unique video, thanks!
Awesome video! More of that please!
Great video Ted.
Great tips, thx!
Pure gold. Becoming a big fan of the King.
This video is perfect! And the Dad tips were great!
As a soon-to-be-father, who watched this video while riding his gravel bike on a trainer...well, this was just perfection.
From one King to another, that was great. And it underlined one of the points I make with the anti-Zwifters: You can be around for the kids and get some work done.
Loved it!
Awesome video!!!
22:20 :
-"I got a truck power, what's that ?"
-"You can be drafter"
-"Ohh!" :')
Great video - many of us lost to KBH at the 2018 Blackfly Challenge by a “fair margin” (he was on his 3rd beer as we arrived) so watching him at work in a lab setting was very interesting! I didn’t know he was also an intellectual and a pleasant chap though - this ruins my former image of him as an odd Adirondack recluse who raced all day Lolol. Ted you’d enjoy the BFC - it’s the very opposite of an endurance event - all out for 60km - but the chaos and before and after make the event very worthwhile. More vids like this pls !
If you own guns you get a one hundred watt boost in the game. So Brits can't win
Great video! I just started zwifting and it’s HARD 😊
learning how to play the game now! still a lot of catching up to do :)
This was great 👏🏻
The look on Ted's face, priceless
I loved this vid👏🏾
Interesting the cadence selection difference. Pretty insane.
CONTENT !!! woohoo!
I love how you and KBH pull 90k views from your attic! See you when my trainer shows up!
great!!!
Kevin is incredibly wholesome.
"they're going to sleep a lot" is totally true. Spent many an evening with my daughter sleeping in a little bouncy crib in the garage while I rode the rollers. As a dad to young kids, you'll get used to doing more training in the evening.
I feel better about not riding outside a whole lot now. Apparently I'm not the only dad stuck inside more lately. 😅🙌🏻
You guys should have been playing Starcraft for the true KBH/Zwift experience
Pretty sure I’m in that screen shot from the ECCC days at 1:04 and was in that group for about as long as the screen shot was on the screen.
Just started watching #Ronde Treasures. Great recommendation! If the general public knew all the craziness that are part of cycling events?! 😎
Super nice video! Really enjoyed it.
Can't give you advice on being a cyclist, but here"s my insight on being a dad : the biggest change is that free time doesn't exist anymore.
You can have your own time, sure. But it"s not free anymore. It has a cost because someone (e.g wife, nanny, grand parents...) has to take care of the kid(s).
It makes a huge difference in the perception you have of your time.
And also : with one kid you are a couple with a kid, still outgoing and fully active. If/when you reach 2 kids, you become a family and everything settles down no matter what.
Good luck and enjoy, you will soon be entering a new part of your life!
(Dad of four children between 6 and 2 years old)
As a dad of a two (an almost 2 year old, and a 6 week old) I think you have hit the nail on the head here. I can't believe the step up in having two, hence why I'm here researching zwift kit. Getting any time alone on the bike during daylight hours seems near impossible at the moment. That too will change, but in the meantime - Zwift!
Maybe one day I will be this fit.
Thank you for the clip, pretty cool. And great tips.
Are your bikes mounted to rocker platforms? If so, which one?
Edit: Google seems to show maybe Saris MP1 Nfinity Bike Trainer Platform. Can you provide thoughts on it?
Thanks for the video and tips. My wife and I just started Zwifting. How do you set up two wahoo kickers side by side without any interference.
Unbelievable DNA and development of their bodies and minds. I race as a C and never use my power-ups because I am so sweaty I am afraid of touching my computer and damage it. I always doubted people that type stuff and but seeing these guys doing those numbers and talking is crazy, I wonder if would happen if they rode all in, I mean not being able to talk in complete pain. They seem like they are not even trying. Respect
Great video. This race seems very soft for an A though. On a B race over the same distance I had to put in 371W just to stay with the front pack and finish towards the back of it. Weight plays a factor, but I can't understand these figures being so so much lower. Anyway - thanks again for a good video
371W average for entire race*
Your heart rate average is inane. I'm above that even before I get on the damn bike. Wow. Just wow.
KBH swearin!
Tip 3 gets me every time. I ride C's, they hit every hill at 6W/kg and then drop to 1.5 until they get their breath back. It's difficult for me to ride that way.
L D hit the intervals 💪🏼
Use the Frankfert or frank something method. That’s how I “cheat” on Zwift. Do small burst of high cadence for at least 3 seconds if you can and then rest. For example I noticed that when I am steadily pedaling say 100rpm and doing 250 watts I feel that I am going faster and it’s easier than putting the chain in the big ring and “pushing” on the pedals like in the real world. So, when I see there is a small hill and say I have it in the 34-17, I drop two or one gears and I pedal as fast as I can for at least 3 seconds and then I change it back to 34-17. That “push” it’s enough to gain at least an extra 250 to 300 wats for 3 seconds or 4 and that it’s enough to go up a small hill.
I think it’s because the way Zwift works. Zwift forces you to pedal at a higher cadence because instead of torque it works by a magnetic resistance so when that drum or disc is rolling really fast and say you are about to go a hill it will take about one or two seconds to the trainer to adjust the resistance to mimic the gradient,. I noticed that flaw and I use it to my advantage, (Elite drivo )
what is that board your bikes are mounted on. Like a surf board. Thank you
Many different social and competitive dymanics/undercurrents in this video. Still a lot of low-hanging fruit that zwift could leverage to make this game a sport. Easy stuff. Don't know why they don't.
What boards do you have your trainers on so they can rock back and forth? what's going on back there??
KBH!!!!!
"Uh huh" 😄👌
First, that was humbling to watch and why I stick to B Zwift races! Question: If Ted was an amateur on Zwift, why didn't it show a PR for him on either the KoM? Has Ted been sandbagging on him being a Zwift "amateur??? Just make sure you guys stick to the A races!!
Damn. My threshold is their zone 1 :/
Blue graph on an A ride that’s crazy
Question - how do you use “power ups” on a tablet? Don’t seem to for me! You keep saying “space bar” obviously I’m not on a PC so not possible and normally tablet not always easy reach (using as main display device) either but can sort it.
W. T. F. Just having a casual convo at 4w/kg. Kill me.
@thighsclub some tips Alex!
Ted King's right arm is massive compared to his left! go figure
That look at 16:33 says it all.
Shoot, where is this draft distance indicator they are talking about??? :/
What is the intro song???
Middlebury in the house. I’ve had my ass handed to me by both these guys IRL.
think you need another mic on kevin
How the heck do you pull 500+ watts lol, when I go all out as hard as I can, I can barely scrape 300 watts haha. Is it because of how my ftp is set?
What rocker plates were you using? I like the fore and aft motion.
Russ Payne I’m wondering the same thing. I think they mention it early in the video. I was hoping they would say something in the comments.
Russ, it’s an MP1 www.saris.com/product/mp1
Brent Perez Thank you!
You got it Brent, it's an MP1 Nfinity platform. It's awesome!
The ex World Tour pro is much smoother
Zwift tip: You need some fans gents!
They have them. Pretty sure they were off for audio quality.
Amazing that you could be fighting for the win in an A race with 4.1 w/kg and 310 watts like KBH ?! Is that just a case of clever drafting ? I suppose the answer is in the video but it didn't really strike me.
Star Wars producers know where to come for tie-fighter sounds and Finding Nemo producers for a wet fish from Ted.
what is under your home trainer ? What is this platform ? can we buy it ? i don't know what it is
That's a Saris MP1 Nfinity platform. It's pretty amazing.
He forgot one tip: Trainer difficulty not 100%.
Climbing 11% with 100+ rpm.
Changed 1-2 gears all race.
I'm going 700 watts!! Too funny!
I need more feathers....
Does Ted play tennis or is he a fiddler crab? Right forearm is huge compared to his left one. Made me laugh. Enjoyed the video. See you on Zwift.
He went down in a major crash at the end of Stage 1 of the 2013 TdF and both separated his shoulder and broke his scapula, then rode 3 more stages. If there's an imbalance there, it might be related to that.
Did you notice my head is oblong also? That's proportion from a distorted camera. Although I did play tennis as a kid!
Kirchmair's win won't count on Zwiftpower. He had no hr monitor.
Ted may have been the slower of the 2, but at least he knows who won the super bowl :P
Messi's cycling has improved.
If people have their trianer difficulty set at 50% does make the race easier for them
Man if Geraint Thomas and Mose Schrute had a kid it would be Ted
can Zwift really improved your cycling strength? Is Zwift a better training regimen than outside cycling?
Share what're your thoughts in the comment section everyone.
Can someone Zwift effectively if the live at a high elevation (7,000+ feet)? Seems like it would be hard racing a person at sea level.
Which one of you was stuck with the Hammer/H2.
We're both on Saris H3s.
Damn y'all are hot
Hey guys, any chance we could be friends? Haha
why isn't Kevin working hard?
"I am a real cyclist, but not a virtual one. If this is gonna be the future... I don’t think so. Maybe I can do some races on Zwift with an electric bike. What do you think about that? Just kidding." Peter Sagan Real Cyclist.
23rd street KOM in under 22 seconds is crazy
I’ll never understand how a guy putting out 100w avg higher in 20 minutes comes in 7th
I weigh a (relative) lot
Ted King gotcha. I do notice that a lot on Zwift though when comparing pro cyclist to pro zwifters (?). seems using more watts ( big efforts) can be more of a detriment than guys that use more triathlon style sustained/controlled efforts, even when they try to bridge a gap...totally counterintuitive for someone that raced for a living, where youre constantly putting in huge efforts to bring back attacks or bridging up to someone ...?
do not float at the back of the pack; sit in the middle
