Hands down the best Zwift racing video. You nicely show only the interesting bits, cutting out the hours of treadmill boredom. Feel free to sprinkle in some Zwift races in the future.
Jeff, you've probably figured out by now that the physics in zwift are not terribly realistic, but I do love zwift because it does have physics that try to replicate actual drafting and bike aerodynmics. I would recommend experimenting starting your sprints much earlier than the entrance of a green sprint segment; you want to be already "wound up" when entering the segment. When doing bunch sprints, try starting middle or further back as you wind up your speed instead of top 5 like a real crit. Since your avatar can physically ride right through riders, when you wind it up earlier, you get a slingshot effect because you're in the draft all the way passing through those other avatars; you're not "in the wind" when you move up through a group, I'm guessing they don't model riders as going around the group in the wind like you would in the real world.
As I too have started doing more Zwift racing I would love to see more of this. I am an older rider and live id a part of the country where not many races happen. So I turned to Zwift Racing to boost my fitness
As a non-racing middle aged man who has somehow ended up in B cat it makes me feel way better to see even you find it fairly hard in B. I mostly just try to not be last.
It’s funny, I started watching your channel years ago when I was getting into Zwift racing. When you were reviewing other people’s races I was tempted to send something to you but you didn’t do virtual… and now you’re here! 😂 If you want a challenge, it would be fun to watch you participate in the weekly Tiny Races.. 4 races back to back… look it up.
Been following the channel over a year, this is my first comment. LOVE to see you in my world 😂 «slow is smooth, smooth is fast» apply here too Jeff, its called draft 😂 Keep it coming 💪
I appreciate you exiting the game in the D and C. Zwift categories. A,B,C,D are power based so the D racers may have a ton of experience they just don't have high w/kg.
Would love to see another. I love learning from strategy. I started Zwift this fall and am now racing B. I have a lot to learn in craft as well as more strength to gain. But When I see that I got beat by people with significantly less power I know I should have raced smarter. But I am learning. Out door riding is just around the corner here in Michigan I am excited to see how the winter training affected my abilities.
I use Zwift racing as intervals in the winter and nothing more. A few years ago I was racing at a decently-high level (successfully, I might add), with a 5.6W/kg FTP and getting absolutely *demolished* in Zwift races. I remember going up the Epic KOM in an A race and holding over 7W/kg for almost 4 minutes while watching half of the field ride away from me like I was in Z2. Who knew there was so many undiscovered World Tour riders in the virtual world 😂
Great to see you in a zwift race. As from what I’ve seen your very good at crit races irl. And also some tactics from that are coming in to play in game which is why zwift I think is so good for that. It’s seriously hard work even when you’re very fit because there’s so much stiff competition out there. I’d be happy to see more vids sure everyone else will too
Zwift has many advantages over traditional racing. Its a lot cheaper, 100% safe - no crashes, less stress, great accessibility (no need to travel 300 miles or fly to a reace), weather independent and most important you can competete daily not only with local riders but with riders all over the world so there will be always worthy opponents to challenge. Two major downsides are ease of cheating, not only by simply providing invalid data in the profile but also more advances software/hardware cheating. The other is obious lack of any bike handling skills required - and this is maybe not a huge but a major factor in real crit racing. That is why Zwift it will never replace crit racing and best Zwift rdiders will never win a real crit race and best real crit riders might not win swift races. Its like comparing real F1 race using real bolids VS racing using F1 simulators.
It's not really because sim racing is kind of the exact opposite. Sim racing removes pretty much all of the physical barriers and effort required to drive a racing car at high speeds, but leaves behind the skill and finesse required to control the car and race wheel to wheel with other people. There's a big skill ceiling to driving in a sim. Whereas zwift removes all the skill required to ride a bicycle and leaves behind just a physical challenge - any idiot can ride the bike in zwift there's no skill required at all. Cheating aside, at best, it's a measure of a raw physical fitness that Jeff demonstrates week after week in the real world isn't a sound or good measure of results in cycling racing. i.e there's a lot more to winning a crit than your ftp, but there's nothing to zwift at all. I get these guys enjoy it but I'd suggest that's because they enjoy riding bikes and exerting themselves and they presumably enjoy the body's positive reaction to these big efforts when you stop (i.e the bliss chemicals created in the body that make you feel good after exercise. Which is why we exercise and put up with the pain and effort) so yeah, you can ride hard in zwift on your trainer, whether you're in a race or not, and finish with a smile on your face. But the racing? It's too silly to laugh at - and certainly not comparable with computer games that have a high skill ceiling like driving sims or some FPS and so on. But, for sure, most computer games are not a physical challenge and if you look at the average esport team they look like you imagine people who sit in front of computer screens for 40+ hours a week would look. I guess I'd argue that I don't think those other computer games are sports, i.e the term esports seems silly. That doesn't mean it can't be a valid thing - chess isn't a sport either, but it's still a competitive endeavour that requires skill to do well at. I think the problem is they wanted to try and make computer gaming sound serious by using the word sport, but to me that's flawed. Equally though although zwift requires most of the physical things that sports do, I wouldn't consider it a sport either because it requires no skill. Sim racing has had millions invested over decades with various motorsport teams, car and tyre manufacturers, computer game developers and individuals working on developing realistic car dynamics and handling. To that end even consumer level sim racing software enjoys cars and tyres that are simulated from manufacturer data and tracks that are built by laser scanning real life tracks. Even then it's still recognised that the physics in sim racing can fall short of the real world and the work continues as we get better computers and so on. Zwift has made little or no effort at all to develop the bike physics, drafting etc.
@@michael1 It depends how you define sport. Rather as phisical activity or a competition or both. Nice man, really puts into perspective your fitness vs somebody like me. Just started zwift a month before winter an made it up to cat b so far. Seen an FTP increase from 230w to 275w in that time. Kudos to you for dropping out of those C and D races. Those guys work hard there, sandbagging is really rampant in zwift.
I'm 95kgs and my 15s power is 1245w. I win a lot of B grade zwift races doing around 3w/kg. I mainly race flatish courses. In Zwift the sprint is everything.
When I started biking strait of 20 years of elite volleyball I had a 1600Watt sprint 210watt FTP . .. Now 8 years of biking mainly social endurance stuff my sprint is 1200ish but FTP is 300-320ish .. I am also 94kg and stay on the Flat stuff when Racing zwift :P ..
I'd love to see more specifics from you on solo tactics in Zwift racing. That's where I consistently struggle, and there are a lot of Zwift-specific aspects to it.
One thing I've learned is that with the dynamics in zwift a longer sprint is rewarded. You could have cannons for 200 m but if someone is sprinting from 500 or 800 at a slightly lower power. You can pass but someone who races more can correct me if that's changed 😂
I tend to agree that sprints start further out in Zwift… also depending on your trainer there is a big of lag between putting the power down and it reflecting in game.
Simple things. Riding away in Cat D/C like that will get you DQ'ed on zwift power (the racing site that matters) so I wouldn't count those wins. Have to win within the confines of the 'rules' You get new powerups every lap or multiples (sometimes) from banners. Finally, using that default bike and wheelset is probably costing your 5% in performance vs the Tron bike or a bunch of the more optimized setups.
I rode against you in your first B race. You definitely rode very strange, something was wrong with your saddle 😀 (you were in a constant sprint). You tried, but I won the race 😎
Fantastic content Jeff! I'm a real 'noobie', starting on Zwift in November. I have won a couple of Cat Ds, but the turnout was say, a dozen riders or so. I just don't have the longevity as yet for the big bunch races. However, it is great fun! Ride On!
Great video! Would love to see you race in actual zwift league races… jumping in random races is fun but typically not the highest quality of racers etc…also you should try a race against some A+/ elite athletes…Category A is just the beginning of the pain lol
The hardest part of Zwift racing is the inability to stop pedaling even briefly. I've found that even when in the draft, if you stop pedaling, you just get dropped. But those cheaters are the worse. Makes it tough for us normal people.
I Zwift a lot and I actually find this video highly disturbing. He's blowing up the racing experience for lower cat riders. He's a B+/A level rider and should never be in a C or D race.
@@Freerider93 what are you on about, he quit the lower levels races and just showed a segment from them for his audience to understand his fitness level means he could quite easily win them. How are you offended
@@123oner2 So he made a fake account, raced in several D and C races, clearly blowing the races up, but he did it for his audience, so it's fine....actually it's not OK for cat A riders to ruin other racers experiences to farm content. It doesn't matter that he dropped out. Going over power like he did forces other riders to do it so he's impacting the race. Now Please go on.
@@Freerider93 He did it for one race per category and quit before the race was ended. It's not like he's doing it week after week. Why are you so upset. What if a cyclist who's been riding for years outside tries a CAT D race on Zwift (to find out how their ability transfers to that discipline) and crushes the field. Are you going to find out where they live and say "that was unfair"
the guys who are sandbagging and making B unpleasant for actual B riders know they can’t go over the B watts/kg at the end of a race if they want to stay at the head of the B pack
As an American racer I noticed an interesting shift in my category placement when I moved from IRL racing to Zwift. When outdoors I could usually hang with my local "A" group but online I was a solid "B". I didn't attribute that to cheaters, though. Zwift is very International and we know that the rest of the world takes cycling much more seriously than we do. Wondering if any others had a similar experience?
Jeff, some of us Ds are big boys are never going to be higher. W/kg is not friendly to us. I've been on zwift 9 years. The best I've been is a C. Without getting into poor eating/dieting, I'm gonna stay D.
B. silver hitting 24w/kg in de sprint and basically maxing out at 2000Watts (zwift doesnt display higher than 2000 if im not wrong and he would be 84kg considering the finish screen) 18:30 is definitely one of the sprints of all time
Amazing to see you on Zwift races as well. I'd be curious if you think your power numbers on Zwift match what you expected when compared to outdoor riding. Also, agreed on the Aero Boost being best for a sprint, unless you're CERTAIN you'll have a lead-out, at which point I tend to like the box truck (drafting) boost timed to end at about 300m to go on my own.
Props to you Jeff for dropping out of the D & C races to not “steal” the win from someone working at their limit in those categories.

I recently started racing Zwift in the D class. Its so much fun and i love trying different strategies. I hope it translates to real racing
Was going to complain, but I really appreciate that you left the lower races early :)
Yes, please do another Zwift race and commentary. Lots of fun.
I’m patiently waiting for a downhill racing series for is bigger cyclists to enjoy 😂
I'd love to see more specifics from you on solo tactics in Zwift racing. That's where I consistently struggle, and there are a lot of Zwift-specific aspects to it.
Please do those every month. Outside is too dangerous for me I love hearing your comments cause I only race on zwift.
That was really cool video would love to see more Zwift vids
One thing I've learned is that with the dynamics in zwift a longer sprint is rewarded. You could have cannons for 200 m but if someone is sprinting from 500 or 800 at a slightly lower power. You can pass but someone who races more can correct me if that's changed 😂
I tend to agree that sprints start further out in Zwift… also depending on your trainer there is a big of lag between putting the power down and it reflecting in game.
Watch the second stage Zwift Game elite for a master class in zwift racing, and the Polish Gambit winning move
Wait, I just signed directly up for B without any need to upgrade.
Ride On!
super cool! you guys should do more of this
Using momentum on those downhill rollers before the sprint in Crit city is a great way to gain an advantage. Nice job.
This was fun to see. Also, i recommend getting the controllers for your bike to steer in game. Adds to the realism.
It’s a good call!
just started zwift racing this year. great fun although finding it hard to improve... i will persevere!
Such a big fan of Will being on the channel
Great video! Would love to see you race in actual zwift league races… jumping in random races is fun but typically not the highest quality of racers etc…also you should try a race against some A+/ elite athletes…Category A is just the beginning of the pain lol
One of ur best vids yet JEFF, make more like this it was enjoyable
fun to see you learn the ways of zwift along the way.
Awesome, would love to see more zwift stuff.
Fantastic!! Really enjoyed this. As a Cat D racer I love all your tips. Thanks
So you enjoyed him sandbagging through different cats?
This was great. Hope to see more of zwift commentary races here
This was a pleasing video to watch! And lots of funny moments!
That C ride was perfect for the steam roller
definitely loving it! please make more zwift content!
So you likely wouldve been dq’d out lf D,C, and B on Zwiftpower on wkg limits. -U10
The hardest part of Zwift racing is the inability to stop pedaling even briefly. I've found that even when in the draft, if you stop pedaling, you just get dropped. But those cheaters are the worse. Makes it tough for us normal people.
This is very great content, thank you. I think a lot of people who Zwift but don't really know who they're up against will find this very interesting.
He did not race several CAT D and C races, stop lying about the facts @@Freerider93
the guys who are sandbagging and making B unpleasant for actual B riders know they can’t go over the B watts/kg at the end of a race if they want to stay at the head of the B pack
That first B cat race leaderboard perfectly sums up racing in B cat
🎉🎉 please more videos on Zwift!!! I love racing at Zwift!
Zwift rocks!!
Would love to see you try a bigger A race. Zwift games replay stages start on the 18th!
The zwiftA race is quite difficult
Jeff, some of us Ds are big boys are never going to be higher. W/kg is not friendly to us. I've been on zwift 9 years. The best I've been is a C. Without getting into poor eating/dieting, I'm gonna stay D.
just jumping out of the race hasnt altered the fact you wrecked the entire race you were just in
i also got to say, you got no clue how to race zwift. its nothing like IRL racing.
This was a lot of fun, definitely something different!
B. silver hitting 24w/kg in de sprint and basically maxing out at 2000Watts (zwift doesnt display higher than 2000 if im not wrong and he would be 84kg considering the finish screen) 18:30 is definitely one of the sprints of all time
Steamroller makes rough road surfaces smoother for you so you go faster than you would otherwise on them while the powerup is active.
To be fair, you need to win each category without breaking the w/kg limits for that cat. That's the tough part :)
awesome Zwift footage, keep it coming!
Its not over till its over Jeff. You gotta win one.
I agree. Draft van for a pack sprint is my favourite. Aero in a pack sprint also impacts the draft you’re getting from the pack.
It would be great to see more Zwift races and commentary!!
