    I am not through the whole video yet, but I think you missed 1 kinda big thing: Challenge Road has an Expert Mode. Sadly, the game doesn't tell you. You just have to enter the Mode again after beating it, which probably nobody will do because there is no reason for since the game doesn't tell you about the new difficulty. You just have to... randomly do it and it suddenly unlocks. And in this mode, the challenges are actual challenges. Some of the games I needed maaaany attempts for and it makes the entire mode more fun.
    Oh, and most of the games in Toad's Rec Room are playable with 1 switch too.

      That's great to know, thanks! My gosh, I really had no idea. People are telling me that River Survival has a harder mode too? How do you unlock that? I just played it again to capture footage and didn't see the option. I thought choosing the difficulty when entering the plaza was all you could do. I have no idea why they didn't make this more obvious.
      Also yeah, I messed up the rec room thing, I should have just said "alternative configurations" or something like that, whether it's two systems or just one system in tabletop mode.

    Honestly a robust online mode alone could have made this game a huge success regardless of the rest of the content and problems it may have. Mario Party has all the potential to be one the most streamed games and a huge hit on Twitch but Nintendo or maybe just NDCube still seems a bit lost when it comes to what a "party" in 2018 can actually be. I grew up with Mario Party 7, so that's always been my favorite, but honestly, this one may top that one. I dunno, the main party mode just feels so refined, and all the boards are fun. To me, the scaled back size of the boards makes the party more interesting because you're interacting with other players and special events more frequently. The amount of boards doesn't really bother me, because they all feel unique, even in Mario Party 7, I only really ever played 3 of the boards anyway.

    6:21 Actually, the dev team for Mario Party changed after the release of MPDS. They were originally made by Hudson, but now it's by the team behind Wii Party iirc. That's why the disaster that is MP9 happened. The new dev team had no direction and tried to do sth new only fail miserably.

    • @RadiantBlazeVA
      @RadiantBlazeVA 6 лет назад +19

      Well part of that is true and part of it isn't. The developing studio did change from Hudson to ND Cube, but ND Cube is made up of former Hudson members. The gameplay change from 8 to 9 was due to multiple reviewers and fans complaining about how stale the series had gotten, and thus they tried changing up the formula. So the random change in gameplay wasn't due to it being developed by a different team, it was just that many people were tired of the old formula by 8. Either way even tho I enjoyed 9 and Star Rush, I'm happy that we're finally back to the old formula, they just have to make sure to keep building off of it instsad of outright changing it like last time.

    Still not as good as Mario party ds. But in all honesty I seriously don’t understand why Nintendo is using free dlc as a get out of jail card to release incomplete games. They think adding nothing at first but then adding a few new stuff like characters or a different mode is ok. They are acting like this is normal and I really hope they stop relying so much on dlc in minor games like Mario tennis aces and Mario party.

    • @megasora4
      @megasora4 6 лет назад +28

      @anthony dagostino free dlc is fine as long as its not used as an excuse to put out a product that feels unfinished. splatoon 1 was release with few maps on a rotation and was the number one complaint during its release and was fixed with said free dlc. examples the OP used are mario tennis aces wich had a lack luster single player, unbalanced characters, and got boring pretty quickly as it was not till free dlc that they added new modes and characters to keep people invested in the game. this mario party while it does have tons of content in terms of mini games has 4 lack luster boards wich are all pretty small with the exception of 1 wich is split by pipes. makeing A 60$ game mind you, designed for party play, feeling lack luster.
      While i disagree that free dlc is a "terrible model". it cant be used as an excuse to "steam early access" a console game, im not paying almost 700$ for a switch + accessories and 60$ to play what feels like a beta for a game that will eventually get better with dlc. thats what no man sky did and it still gets shit for it today.
      Retro also said nothing about the patch updates. those are basicly required in any game nintendo has put out on a system that connects to their server, so bringing that up in your sarcastic retort made little to no sense.

      and you guys complain about that, incredible.

    • @isaacargesmith8217
      @isaacargesmith8217 6 лет назад +6

      The thing that gets me when people defend this that everyone gets angry when other companies do it, and heres something no one sees to be considering. What if the buyer doesn't have wifi. What if they CANT download that update, that means they just bought an early access game for full price with no way to get it out of early access. While its good they're updating the game, they probably should have made it a much more fulfilled base game to begin with. Along with this the problem with this model is that by the time a lot of these updates happen, a lot of the hype's died down for the games. A lot of people tend to buy these games, play them the most right after getting them, and by the time the game is updated a lot they probably moved on to something else and may have even done so because they lost interest due to the lack of initial product. On top of that it doesn't look good for publicity when a games launch has a content problem as well because that can influence a lot of people to not buy the game, which could make nintendo have less of a reason to update the game due to lack of sales.

      If all four boards were bad there'd likely be an issue, from what I've seen everyone thinks they're all pretty solid so there's no reason to need more. In previous games where we've had more boards I've struggled to like a single one of them - like in Mario Party 4 - and it ruined the entire game for me. Having a small amount of solid boards is better than having more bad ones.

    Being able to set how many allies each player starts with would've made this game way better. Allies change up the game so much and make up for the lower dice rolls, but they're so hard to get for one player let alone all 4 to allow for ally minigames to be played. Everything is so cheap that getting money from winning minigames almost doesn't matter. Handicap stars are gone, the ability to turn off bonus stars is gone, the ability to change text speed and type of minigames is gone, taunts are gone, sound test is gone. Super Mario Party strait up has no optional settings. Instead we have... sticker mode... yaaaay. During any given mode, it feels like there isn't enough minigame variety because, while there is a decent amount in total, they're spread so thin across many different modes and conditions (river rafting, rhythm, toad rec room, and when everyone has an ally). The game looks great, however, and I think it's a great template for an amazing Super Mario Party 2 if they fix my issues with it. ps. the ability to speed up turns or skip cpu turns would help the pacing immensely.

That mode was one of my favorite of all time. The remixes to its theme was so fun to listen to, and getting to the end to unlock a mini-game that could only be open to the game by getting through this mode. As a kid I remember playing through this so many times with all the characters and I loved every second of it. Glad you like it arlo however I did not. Here’s why:
    Liked the concept, like the hub and the amount of mini games. Even the amount of characters was good.
    I dislike the amount of boards and the size of the of them. The boards are purely to small for the unique dice to mean much. The size also makes it really easy to get to the next star in the same turn. Stars are too cheap 10 coins it makes it to easy rank up a high amount of stars. If you gain a lead you pretty much keep that lead. Bowser spaces need to be a think again. Not much replay value Online for this game just sucks period. Lastly quit shafting Birdo she deserves to be playable again.

      MP4 is the last real mario party we had but implemented weird gambling. MP3 is the best balanced most fun yet. MP2 was the first experience to use items and MP1 was innovative yet callous inducing fun.

    I know you didn’t like star allies but if you’re going to keep bringing up the lack of content you might want to take a quick look back. A lot of new characters and I think a couple new challenge modes and at least one boss fight (morpho knight) were added through dlc. It gave the game a lot more variety in its modes and easily tacked on a couple hours for me. Just thought I would mention it although most of the extra play time was me playing more things that were already there the characters added enough fun to continue to motivate me to 100 percent complete it and because of the short length and difficulty doing so was not only enjoyable for me but extended the time I spent on it a lot. This being said it is still the only switch game that I finished, but the extra content made the length satisfying enough as kirby games aren’t often long anyways.

Only 4 boards that are the smallest the series has ever seen and they're not very dynamic. Items are slightly lacking and not very creative and I wish party mode included some of the rhythm mini games because they're really fun. Overall I hope that they add in some free DLC that'll make the game better. 7.5/10

    While I don't feel the co-op mode is great the party mode is really what shines in the game, and while there may not be many Maps I appreciate how you brought up how each one shines in their own right.
    While the single player is really lacking there are so many other games on the switch I'd rather be playing on my own time rather than hanging out with people. I feel like Mario Party can only improve from here which is one of the most positive things I can take from this game.

    Hey, Arlo?
    So one of my favorite gaes on the Wii recently came out on Switch: Go Vacation. Sadly, it's 50$. From what I remember as a kid, this game was awful fun, and I would spend hours a day playing it before my Wii broke. I was wondering if you want to review it? I've been having a drifting problem with my joycons, and my L button recently broke, so I really need to know if this game requires the L button (or even minorly, like in BotW), or needs precise movements. If you don't want to review this game, I get you. It was an unpopular Wii game that abused the Mii's and is 50$ on Switch, not very promising in terms of views, or nostalgia for anyone who didn't have to download roms for their Wii (My disc player broke on it, haha) But, hey, it might be even more fun than I remember it to be, because it was one of the hidden gems on the Wii, when I played it as a 6 year old.
    So yeah. I really want to know if this game is worth the 50$ before I get new Joycons. Because I'm probably getting new Joycons within 5 months if I don't get go Vacation, so the L button thing is pretty big too, as I'd rather wait 5 months to play a game, then waste 50$ and have to wait 5 months to play BotW, haha.
    Thanks for reading this if you even see it. It really means a lot.

      I really liked the idea of releasing a game and slowly bringing out more over time for the original Splatoon and ARMS, but I hope this doesn't turn into a regular thing. I just want to play the entire game when it comes out instead of going into a long cycle of being done with the game and trying to get back into it again.

      @VijoPlays 6 лет назад

      The idea is cool "Play through the game, when you're done a week later new content releases, so you pick it up again (and maybe even try what you've played before." (also keeps news articles talking about the game longer, thus making a few extra $$$.).
      The downside is, incomplete games just feel like poop (which is a big deal for a company like Nintendo, one that's been known for pushing out polished Single Player experiences without a lot of Online hassle and setup) and the beginning of a game is the most important. No Man's Sky might be a good game now and it holds all of the promises that were made in the beginning, but do people really care after being burned? Similarly release dates are super important and a misplaced one can lead to the game not selling at all, even if it's a very good game.

    Sure they maybe "enough" for now, but if you look at other Console Mario Party Games, you will see that 4 is the bottom of all the Games. The first got 8!
    Sure there will be maybe free DLC for more Boards but it feels, that this Game should come with 5 or 6 on the beginning and the option to unlock a 6. or 7. one. And i do not talk about creative ones, then other MP Games got realy nice boards compared to this one.

      @Akane1313 6 лет назад

      Hey! He's not just a blue guy. He's OUR blue guy. And don't you forget it! =P
      I think they're really in an experimental phase with the games they're releasing for Switch. Exploring different options to see what sticks and what doesn't and trying all the stuff they've probably been wanting to do. As far as I've seen, people mostly really like the game and the main complaint is a lack of replayable content. Personally, I would love more and larger boards. Four is pretty surprising.
      I think we keep looking at it from a gamer viewpoint where we will purposefully carve out long chunks of time to sit down and play a single game for hours, but Nintendo has been trying to create games that can appeal to the non gamers as well. I was telling my manager that I had recently gotten this game and she said she played it at a friend's house and loved it. She even specifically mentioned that she was glad you could play a short game because a couple of them were prone to getting drunk and wandering off if the game took too long. Maybe a good thing to do would've been to have more boards in varying sizes so you could catch both audiences.

    • @UndeadCollector
      @UndeadCollector 6 лет назад

      But "playing a short time" is not the same as "only a few boards exists in the game".
      In every Mario Party you can choose only 10 Rounds for a short play, but this has nothing to do how many boards are in the Game.
      I don't have anything against Arlos opinion, but thats it = opinion, not a Review. And the lack of knowing at least a bit more about the other Games, makes it even worse.
      I mean: who came with the idea to "remove" all the Minigame and just play a Boardgame? I just think Arlo is the wrong person to ask if this Game is good or not.
      This Video should be more like a "Alro's opinion about: "Game XY"

    • @Akane1313
      @Akane1313 6 лет назад

      UndeadCollector Yeah, which is why I said that I think having more boards would still have been better. I think that, most likely, the addition of the new modes probably ate into board development time and resources. They sacrificed the number of boards and gave us more modes so we got to try a lot of different things, but the trade off was that they were all short/small experiences.
      I don’t think I said that I agree with all of Arlo’s opinions. I was just making light of your “blue guy” comment. I think that anyone who has played the game and has an opinion is worth hearing out. Especially if you want to know what makes a game attractive to all kinds of players. I’ve played a bunch of Mario Party games and I love this one but can definitely feel a lack in areas that new players might not know to care about. Arlo hasn’t played a bunch of Mario Party games so everything is new to him. You can’t miss what you never had, but hearing an opinion free of nostalgia goggles is of value too.

    • @UndeadCollector
      @UndeadCollector 6 лет назад

      I don't say that with nostalgic goggles on, but if a new Game of a Game Series comes out, then there should be a comparison of what was better before or what's improved in the new Game.
      This "blue guy" was just my way of joking arround. I think Arlo is well known that this is his signature. A blue Hand puppet with life in it :p
      I mean: who i am? Just a small YTber also talk about opinions, but im also a fan of comparison, because without comparison, we would never know what's realy good or bad, better or worse. :)
      (and it helps to understand the reason, why ppl are angry about specific Games. Even good Games can be targeted as bad games, like Metroid Federation Force. A good game on it's own, but if you want a real Metroid with Samus = it's the "worst" Game ever)

      Well it's a good thing people find different values in different things, because MP is 3rd place in NPDs September tracking with only 2 days. So obviously somebody found it to be worth $60

      Champion24147 it’s only tracking so well because it’s the only Mario party out on switch, Boards are actually back with no shared cars... it’s all misleading. The game isn’t shit but it’s an average effortless endeavor

      This game sold 240k copies in japan in 8 days, its nintentendos next 1 million seller within a few months, its the game that took over my house every weekend. but hey i guess i was stupid, i overpaid fo a game me and kids are having a blast with. thanks panda for telling the truth- thats 20 bucks ill never get back- oh wait, i preordered it on amazon so i got 10 dollars cred back already. but damn - i cant believe i spent 10 dollars too much acording to Net genus's like you. i should ask you guys before i spend money on nintendo products so you will tell me its overpriced or just plain garbage... GTFOH !! ONLINE MULTIPLAYER?? HOW MANY GAMES OF mONOPOLY HAVE YOU PLAYED THRU CONCLUSION ONLINE?/ EXACTLY NONE- LONG 60- 120 MINUTE BOARD GAMES DONT last online- shit, whoeve is losing bad or having bad luck rolls usually quits by turn 6. but i digress, i should listen to the haters and just play my ps 4. No issues there........maybe i should sell my 2 switches or since there not worth anything-- ill give them away - and my 3rd pair of joy cons, and my pro controller, and my wired power a luigi controller, and the New diablo Power a controller im pre-ordering. in sure starfox, luigis mansion 3ds, Diablo 3, Diablo 3 edition pro controller, lets go pichachu w/ poke ball controller,, & Smash Bros are just a waste of 350 dollars. i guess nintendo fooled me and stole my money. i should have bought spiderman, sHADOW OF THE TOMBRAIDER, and Forza horizon 4. (OH YES IDID BUY THEM) I GUESS I FUCKED UP, MY KIDS $500 IN x-MAS GIFTS - I FEEL SO ASHAMED.... LISTEN Panda, you can tell me what games i should by that you think are worth it and on what platform this way i dont mess up again. Thank god for internet trolls- or

    I’ve skipped around on mario party games (I’ve only played 1, 6, and 8) and really my favorite part of this game was the intro. It reminded me of the originals intro.

    This year for Nintendo has been really disappointing for me. Kirby, Mario tennis and super Mario party are all half baked. Nearly great but just missing the mark. They all feel rushed and if we could just get some more content or gameplay tweaks they would be awesome.

    • @adrianleonce455
      @adrianleonce455 6 лет назад +5

      The only Nintendo game that seems to be avoiding the "half baked" formula this year is Smash Bros Ultimate. We have seen a lot of that game, and we can confirm as pure fact, that it will have PLENTY of content.
      Hopefully, next year, the Nintendo games will feel complete

      clay jack I would agree, I’ve only bought two Switch games this year so far, Mario Party and Crash, but Pokémon and Smash Bros will more than make up for that

      I feel like this year has been sort of Nintendo's "safe" year when it comes to their releases. With the exception of Kirby and Smash ofc. I mean, if you take a look back. When was the last *good* Mario Party and a *good* Mario Tennis?

    • @elekktrik_0339
      @elekktrik_0339 6 лет назад +1

      Exactly, 100%. I don't know why nintendo have all these amazing exclusive franchises and yet choose to churn out games with such little content. If that's what they want to do, why not save us all and just give us great ports like super Mario 3d world, or super Mario galaxy 1 And 2?

    The boards are awful. Tiny, linear and too easy to get multiple stars in one go. They're nothing compared to Hudson's softs inventive maps (Look up the train map in Mario Party 8, genius.) They artificially inflate the games by making the animations slower (Toadette moving is painful.) 10 turns feels longer than an old 20 round game in the old games with the animation speed sped up. Also, no saving and returning to a game is inexcusable. N64 had that, if a friend has to leave, you are boned.

    • @pandasbass7267
      @pandasbass7267 6 лет назад +1

      clockstomper right? Mario party 8 had such amazing board designs while in Super we get 4 tiny boards... for 60 dollars... nah this is a 40 dollar game max

      Actually, you can indeed save your games and come back to it, it just doesn’t tell you that you can. You have to close out of the game with the game menu, then once you do the game will say “Ok saving your game for later! Come back soon”. I think it is silly that the game never tells you at any point that you can do this, but no don’t worry. *You can save your matchs.*

      @DeadhoofofWind That's the 3rd time I've heard someone explaining that you actually can do something but the game just doesn't tell you how. This game is sounding more and more unintuitive by the day

    • @DeadHandtheSurvivor
      @DeadHandtheSurvivor 6 лет назад

      Ok so update, it seems like the game will only save if you're playing by yourself, because when I was playing with my sister and we can to quit early it didn't save whatsoever, didn't even warn me that it wouldn't, it just asked if I wanted to go to the plaza then buggered off. So not only does it not tell you that it can save, or when you can, but it doesn't even have the decency to *warn* you when you can't.
      That's just bad game design.

    This game was my biggest disappointment on Switch. There's no skill or point to your choices at all during the game. The winner is basically chosen by the AI based on mostly uncontrollable circumstances. The mini games are probably the highlight, 2 of the 4 maps were just not very good and the roll system is not fun at all because of inbalance. Content is lacking hugely. Getting the extra dice rollers are more important than any other decision on any map because of how overpowered they are. The only decent thing in this game was the water rafting. I could go on but i've forgotten so many of my complaints because I haven't booted this thing up a single time after finishing all the game maps and modes.

    • @Riddle_wright

      And what exactly determines it to be a classic for you? I have a detailed review on my channel covering every game in the series. And upon the looks of it this game is basically mario party 1, suped up with extra features.
      I think its wonderful, not as good as mario party 3 but questionable as good as mario party 2/4
