This is actually a great game for all ages. I thought it would be a kids game playing it but the challenges are so well done. As good as games get imo.
I’m 34 and just started playing this the other day. Reminds me of my 64 days. The only other games ive played on switch are botw, luigis mansion 3 and mk11. All are great.

I'd have less of a problem with the motion controlls if the controller didn't have 8 STINKIN UNUSED BUTTONS that could easily have the motion control moves mapped to them! A and B both do the same thing. Same with X and Y. L and R ZL and ZR 3 buttons on the d-pad go unused As does pushing in the left joystick. EDIT: I understand that the controls have to be simplistic, but they still can be. Snapshot mode could be remapped to pushing in the right joystick (who honestly uses first person view?) and the up, down, and spinny cap throws could be mapped to the up, down, and left & right d-pad buttons, respectively. I think most people would be able to understand that. And for captured creatures, Y for example could do the dash move, and X could be used for the super fast dash. B could be used for a normal jump for frogs or something, and A for a super jump. You'd be hard pressed for find someone that can't understand a control scheme like that. Or Nintendo could just, ya know, let us remap the controls ourselves.
I'm pretty sure the thinking was to keep the controls as simple as possible, and while I think it works fine in some cases (flick controller in a direction to do homing attack), having to shake the controller like crazy to do capture moves better and nudging it just right to do the spinning hat move are obnoxious.
This might just be a personal thing, but I wish they would have used those buttons to work on some of the other commands. It's difficult for me to perform a cap jump dive versus a normal cap dive because the only difference is holding a button as opposed to just pressing it. And with the movement being so quick it's a difficult maneuver and yet I feel like it's so important. Only three buttons are necessary, and I wish it wasn't the case
I agree about the motion controls. There's a certain moon in Sand Kingdom that requires you to continuously shake the controllers while controlling a Bullet Bill and doing it in handheld mode is AWFUL.
I play exclusively in handheld mode as well and didn't not find the issue anywhere close to as extreme or debilitating as you make it seem. I think everyone should get this game, it's outrageously fun.
Karnage Fails I beat the game completely without motion controls, it wasn't until I got to SOME of the challenge moons that it became necessary, but even those were few and far between (keep in mind I was well beyond 600 moons before this even happened, and I could've just avoided it and moved on). Moons of that caliber won't even be attempted by the general public.
Toxically Masculine I also almost entirely played in Handheld mode. The point is that it does not feel like a handicap, the games is super fun with or without motion controls and I never found myself desiring to use them, or frustrated that I could not.
I also played exclusively in handheld mode (I only played a small bit of metro kingdom - that tank moon particulary) and I even enjoyed the game more in handheld than on TV, even though I played the final and some other major parts of the story in tabletop because motion controls still a bit of depth to the. Graphics didnt go through some major downgrade and the motion controls? I was able to pull some of them even on handheld! It wasnt easy and they should at least try to make the circle throw easier to do on handheld, but it didnt affect my experience at all. I would like if it was mapped to some button, but I am OK with the way they handled them The game is awesome, everybody should play it!!!
Every time I feel like I'm getting tired of the game I'm playing, I watch one of your videos about that game and get so pumped up to play it again, that my controller's usually in my hand less than 2 minutes into the runtime. Thank you so much for all that you do man, you really manage to get across what really makes these games beautiful and special.
36:26 btw arlo. you have to keep in mind. no game can be perfect. nintendo realized this, and added the motion controls just to screw with you, and by the looks of things it worked XD
With all of Arlos "If you went back in time and told me..." quotes, now I really want someone to invent a time machine, and do nothing but go back in time, say all those things, and record Arlo's reaction. I'm getting my priorities straight, here...
With 812 moons (not counting the 22*3 multimoons), that gives 329266 possible pairs of moons. Therefore, I can only conclude that your correct guess means you must have snuck into my house, found my Switch, and peeked at my save file! Or, yeah, context clues and the obvious answer ("both jump rope moons" would also be possible from context, but not if you've actually tried the minigames)
Hey, glad to hear that there are other people care about the plot in Mario games. Honestly, there are so many stories we can all tell in this Universe!
Great review, Arlo. I love that you can be excited for a game without sounding like a fanboy, while at the same time giving honest criticisms without sounding like a hater. Perfect balance.
I remember watching this fresh. I was in 8th grade at the time, the switch and Mario odyessy were so game changing and the excitement and hype around it pervailed myself, my friends, and the youtubers like Arlo that I watched at the time. Here I am now, 4 years later, 2 years into Covid and attending a whole different school in a different town. I miss when this was new, I remember asking my mother for a switch and Mario odyessy for christmas, and this being my real leap back into nintendo WII when I was 6 years old. To any people who find this review for whatever reason it may be, I hope the feelings of nostalgia, when games like this and BOTW were still new also bring a tear to your eye as it has mine.
Yep, as someone who plays Switch almost exclusively in handheld mode and the motion controls were a mess. Shaking the poor console to speed up climbing was both anoying and scary (I was afraid that I break the joycons). Still... It was a great time :D
RandomName 101 Sorry if you think I meant Odyssey stinks, I mean that people are giving way to much credit to the new capture mechanic which is simply another way to get power ups. I also don’t like the repetitive power moon placement.
Fair points, but I felt like the capture mechanic was different from power ups. Power ups are usually all the same, and used in every course, but each of the captures were different and (most) of the captures were unique to one specific kingdom. I also felt like there were _that_ many repetitive power moons, although I haven't 100% the game yet so I haven't seen all of them.
@@samanthacino I don't see the issue with some of the moons being simple. Those just happen to be the moons that are the most easy and fastest to do. There are plenty of other moons that you must complete a challenge for, or explore the map and find.
I put this video in my watch later list because I was expecting it to be full of spoilers, I just recently got myself a Switch less than a week ago along with odyssey, Mario and Rabbids, and MK8D. I'm now kinda disappointed that you didn't discuss the whole game... Sequel! Sequel!
Me to Nintendo: You know how you revitalized the 3D Mario series by returning it to its roots by creating the beautifully made, critically acclaimed and fan adored Super Mario Odyssey? Yeah. Now do Paper Mario. (I know I made this comment on another Arlo video recently, but isn't it still just as true?)
@@theAstarrr Origami King: A solid game, but definitely not the return to form I wanted. TTYD: Close to perfect, and gives me hope that the next original Paper Mario will be similar.
After many years of being mainly a PS and PC gamer I've found myself coming back to Nintendo and really enjoying this game, think I've become bored with all the ultra realistic stuff, this game just feels good to play.
I completed this game 100% including buying the skeleton suit, tha game is long to complete but the pure joy of controlling Mario with fluid control helped me going through this. The game deserve every hype it get if its taken as a platformer game. 10/10
This game is wonderful. New Donk City filled me with so much joy. The only downside to the game are Bowser's rabbit minions, and they aren't even bad, it's just you have to beat them multiple times during the initial game. If we had a new boss for each level this game would have been truly perfect.
Okay now we need the ultimate connection to this review in Pikmin 4 when Arlo appears to him again and death says it took longer than I thought and Arlo replies with "Yeah Nintendo did take way longer on this game than I thought. Maybe even the raycon thing can be how he gets out of it.
I think a better thing for replacing motion controls is to use the L button, which is unused. Hold L and press X, bam. Up throw. Hold L and press Y, bam. Down throw. I think that'd be perfect, and make it so I don't accidentally press B or something when trying to jump and die to a Goomba, and rather have to hold L instead.
Actually, you're right, Yoshi Miner. The main controls section of Odyssey tells you to use ZL, but I've always have used ZR. I think that it should be interchangable. Also, when I said L is unused, I didn't know that it really does is just mirror the R button and reset your camera. I think a better candidate may be the control stick, pressing down on it and then holding up, down, left, or right to do a special throw.
Also, I don't use the motion control moves in the game not because I grudgingly do so just to play in handheld, (Which I beaten the game completely ONLY in handheld mode), it's because I have found that 0 moons absolutely require motion controls, even the ones with the extra shake, you can just exit the enemy. It also does nothing to make my movements better, unless I want to get WR on a Koopa Freeruning event or something. The only exception I feel is the Homing Cap throw, which I don't use because I don't usually miss a lot, but I can see that as a problem for others, and could of easily been set to a double tap Y.
To be fair, the other thing they should fix is to be able to map your controller. For a platformer with very simple "This button does that, this one does this other thing", there's no reason we shouldn't be able to swap what our buttons do.
A little late here, but the proposed motion control alternative wouldn’t work. If pushing Y twice would trigger a homing cap throw, then the dive-to-cap-bounce combo would be impossible. Plus, if the spin throw were so easy to perform, it would trivialize most combat encounters. The motion controls are annoying to perform while in handheld mode, but the most important moves are always easy to perform with buttons. I also think the easier-to-perform moves are what make the game more fluid and fun; not the weird cap throws that really all do the same thing, capturing and attaching enemies. All capture-specific motion controls only ask that you shake the controller in a non-specific way, so it’s always easy and comfortable to do, assuming you have the motion control sensitivity option toggled to fit your current gaming situation. I understand the surface level criticism of motion controls for the mere fact that they aren’t always accessible to everybody, but I think objectively, the motion controls do nothing to hamper any aspect of the game in even a small significant way.
What if the X button was used to throw Cappy upwards and A to throw him downwards (who even uses A and X for standard controls anyway)? I think that this would be the perfect solution for at least those 2 moves. You could even do this in 2 player mode!
I watched this video when you first released it in 2017 and I'm coming back to watch it again years later, as I'm replaying Super Mario Odyssey. You are absolutely correct about this game being a source of joy: when life does get me down I play this game and I do share that feeling you have about the game lifting you up and making you happier. Really insightful analysis of this game, Arlo, it is always a pleasure to watch your reviews!
The fact that the motion controls lack a button equivalent half the time annoys me. I play handheld mode exclusively. Shaking my screen is really annoying. I can get through the game without those moves but I regret not haivng the choice to use them in my ideal mode of play, it feels against the grain of the 'play where you want' idea of the switch.
Homing hat toss, up/down, quick spin all require motion controls. They arent needed, really, but it feels restrictive as well as kinda stupid because there's two free buttons that are just assigned to hat toss and jump twice. The games all about getting around in as many fun ways as you can and having some of those ways locked to motion controls is bad. That just feels awful for me as a handheld mode player. I could be double tapping y to home or hitting x to spin but instead its shake the screen.
Zippy Ragu Nintendo really doesn’t support creators. Many youtube creators literally have to “partner” with them to not receive copyright strikes. I put partner in quotes here as it’s less being a partner and more “Hey there friend! We are gonna send you a free game of any cost and you have to make a video on it wether you like it or not. If you don’t well we are gonna spam your email telling you to”.
Oh my god thank you! I thought I was the only person that actually wants some sort of story motivation from a mario game. So many people trash me for having that thought process,
Niceri98 if a game doesn’t have a sliver of a story, it makes the game a tiny bit worse, but when they have a story, even when that story is online on RUclips and stuff, I tend to like them a lot
It is still a super generic mario story....bowser gets peach....go get her back....but at least the road on the way is really cool and interesting....I JUST HATE THE MOONS!!! 😂😂😂😂
Sunshine is my favorite 3D Mario just for the interconnected areas and story driven quest And odyssey also has a story driven quest but everything is disconnected plus the game is really on the easy side
I don’t think how great a track is depends on the “Will You Hum It Later” test. If that is the case, pop music would be the best genre ever because that’s what it’s designed to do. Get stuck in your head. There’s way more to a track besides if it’s catchy or not. I see this in almost every game review and it bothers me that they talk about music this way, as if there’s nothing else to it. Especially when it comes to TV or video games, the main focus is feeling and if the track fits the mood, and if does a great job at doing it. Music is supposed to make you feel. For example, when you’re in the little jolly town of seals in Snow Kingdom, you hear a happy fiddle tune playing. I can’t think of a better way to show off their village. Or, in the Lake Kingdom, the music gives off a very mystic vibe, I mean, they’re mermaids, and the beautiful water you have to swim through goes well with the music. I hope I made my point clear enough. I want people to look at music more closely. I love Odyssey’s ost.
This is a delightful review, solid all the way through. The introductory scene is really funny, and you’ve got a wonderfully silly metaphor soon after: “It’s like a loved one thought lost at sea, years ago - then found, safe and sound, and stuffed with moons.” Nicely done, and thank you.
I only got this game very recently and didn’t want to watch this until I finished it - I absolutely love this game but couldn’t agree more with what you said about the controls. I played this on a switch lite and did feel restricted/felt it difficult to use a lot of moves. I took it down to “the switch lite wasn’t released when this game came out” but what you said about the switch having handheld mode made me realise it’s not a switch lite problem haha! Thanks for reviewing this Arlo, definitely worth the purchase if you haven’t played this yet (even in 2022) ☺️
I can't get the motion controls right. I like aspects of them, but the problem isn't liking the motion controls (You good), it's just that there is no alternative for people who just can't pull them off reliably.
From the Kingdom that is a homage to the original Donkey Kong game, to the original 2D segments, to Peaches castle from Mario 64 in the postgame, Mario Odyssey feels like a love letter to Mario's entire history while having its own distinct identity. Every game in the Mario series have their own appeals that make you want to play them, but Odyssey, to me, is the definitive Mario experience
It's a technical term in art design. A jaggy is the name for a surface that is clipping with another surface or the background. It is frowned upon in the digital art world.
Nostalgia Works do you get the joke? Arlo used to run a channel named Jaggy Thermas where he had a FACE REVEAL! The channel still exists, and I sadly came upon it recently.
I think that Odyssey is one of the best 3d platformers, and arguably the best mario game, and I'd say that it's at least the best 3d mario, so a sequel that improves the minor issues like the galaxy games... My god I think I'll cry
I’d like to bring up how when I got to Wooded Kingdom, the kingdom that would have been the first in most other Mario games, it still felt like it wouldn’t work as a first world. That feels like enough to show that the Odyssey team was actually putting loads of effort and creative love into the game as they somehow made a plant themed world cool.
I've discovered that this is the perfect video to doze to. It's engaging enough to keep you from falling fully asleep, but easy enough to follow as just audio to not require you to look at the screen to appreciate it. You get this delightful sort of half-lull as you listen, eyes closed, to Arlo gushing about how great Odyssey is, and by the end you get up feeling refreshed.
the biggest problem for me with this game was the constant finding of the moons, they never felt special to gain. they were legit everywher like coins in a mario game... didnt feel special to solve a puzzle that took a loong itme just for another moon
You wouldn't believe how fun it is to roll up a hill and right as you hit the peak, roll right into a long jump. Also, the biggest jump in the game is to triple jump, throw your cap in midair, dive into your cap, bounce off of your cap, then dive one more time.
for anyone defending the motion controls, imagine if you had the choice between buttons to use smash attacks and motion controls to use them, but the motion controls did double the knockback.
In case anyone's wondering, the review only uses footage from the opening cinematic and the first three kingdoms. I tried to strike a balance between being thorough and being spoiler-free, so I'm hoping anyone can enjoy it. And if you don't want to see too much of those first kingdoms, just listen to the review without watching and you should be fine.

I didn't even realize it until now about the starting area. There's a giant city almost surrounding this island on the coast: it's ManHATtan island!

36:26 btw arlo. you have to keep in mind. no game can be perfect. nintendo realized this, and added the motion controls just to screw with you, and by the looks of things it worked XD
This game was the only reason the switch has motion controls 😂

No it’s because of gyro aim

...So I'm guessing Arlo hasn't done Jump Rope Genius.
I have two moons left unclaimed. Guess which they are...

I didn’t figure this out until really late, but you can also hold Y to speed up climbing.
Apparently, the console can actually withstand a bit of abuse. Not quite Gameboy tough, but not super flimsy either.
+Kevin Stevens,
Still slower than shaking however, unfortunately. "Love motion controls just like wii love them!!!!!" ;)
I haven't have to use motion controls ever and I have 750 moons.

Great! Who cares?
When I launched Super Mario Odyssey i said to myself, "This is going to be a special game." and I was right.
Daniel So true with all the filler moons and dumb gimmicks.
Could you explain?
RandomName 101 Sorry if you think I meant Odyssey stinks, I mean that people are giving way to much credit to the new capture mechanic which is simply another way to get power ups. I also don’t like the repetitive power moon placement.
Fair points, but I felt like the capture mechanic was different from power ups. Power ups are usually all the same, and used in every course, but each of the captures were different and (most) of the captures were unique to one specific kingdom. I also felt like there were _that_ many repetitive power moons, although I haven't 100% the game yet so I haven't seen all of them.

This game is wonderful. New Donk City filled me with so much joy. The only downside to the game are Bowser's rabbit minions, and they aren't even bad, it's just you have to beat them multiple times during the initial game. If we had a new boss for each level this game would have been truly perfect.

14:43 Ground Pound Jump came from 3D World, too
I think a better thing for replacing motion controls is to use the L button, which is unused.
Hold L and press X, bam. Up throw.
Hold L and press Y, bam. Down throw.
I think that'd be perfect, and make it so I don't accidentally press B or something when trying to jump and die to a Goomba, and rather have to hold L instead.
Oh... I actually use L to ground pound and stuff instead of R... I've always thought that was the button everyone used to ground pound XD
It's a brilliant game. 10/10 as far as I'm concerned

"It even more doesn't matter than I thought it would doesn't matter"
-Arlo 2017
Is Duck-Faced Death going to be a recurring character? It would be awesome if he was!
I jump with B though....
With B? Ewwwwwwwww
Just feels easier to press Y after a jump with B as opposed to a jump with A.
To be fair, the other thing they should fix is to be able to map your controller. For a platformer with very simple "This button does that, this one does this other thing", there's no reason we shouldn't be able to swap what our buttons do.
Every game should have a custom map controller option period.
“Fortunately the game introduces a NEW type of jump where you come out of a ground pound to get some extra height.”
3D World: ...
Thats what i thought :)

@@lawrencefuller8841 serious mistake I made is purchasing that $60 overpriced short Kirby game when I could've bought many more better games or BOTW
Well, wait no longer
I understand the surface level criticism of motion controls for the mere fact that they aren’t always accessible to everybody, but I think objectively, the motion controls do nothing to hamper any aspect of the game in even a small significant way.
they do
What if the X button was used to throw Cappy upwards and A to throw him downwards (who even uses A and X for standard controls anyway)?
I think that this would be the perfect solution for at least those 2 moves. You could even do this in 2 player mode!

YES! Please PLEASE do a video on the spoilery post game content PLEASE!!
Is Death really getting his own channel? I hope so.
"no levels so hard i threw up my hands and called it quits" wait until you get to darker side buddy
“This is perfection” Arlo says when talking about the graphics, while on screen the little thing for the sand kingdom says this is terrible
Super happy Nintendo is supporting you, hopefully they'll flat out hire you!
Kevino Casino, how did you get this information?

Oh my god thank you! I thought I was the only person that actually wants some sort of story motivation from a mario game. So many people trash me for having that thought process,
Niceri98 if a game doesn’t have a sliver of a story, it makes the game a tiny bit worse, but when they have a story, even when that story is online on RUclips and stuff, I tend to like them a lot
It is still a super generic mario story....bowser gets peach....go get her back....but at least the road on the way is really cool and interesting....I JUST HATE THE MOONS!!! 😂😂😂😂
Sunshine is my favorite 3D Mario just for the interconnected areas and story driven quest
And odyssey also has a story driven quest but everything is disconnected plus the game is really on the easy side
@@mistertazington1014 Sunshine is my favorite as well. I see you have good taste

46 minutes... you could say odyssey flips Mario 64s formula on its head...

From the Kingdom that is a homage to the original Donkey Kong game, to the original 2D segments, to Peaches castle from Mario 64 in the postgame, Mario Odyssey feels like a love letter to Mario's entire history while having its own distinct identity.
