He's so -ve nearly all the time and veils it with the claims of being 'objective' and the usual 'cash grab' ploys.
Oldskool mindset. Nowadays, games & ratings are very subjective. A sweeping review score matters not anymore: the sales do because whereas 10 years ago a game selling say '3 million' would be considered 'Good' - nowadays even 'Nicher' games sell well over 10 million. Twilight Princess HD. Also reflects the massively increased population in general.

People are so caught up in how much "better" a streaming service would be, but fail to see how soulless and hollow it would feel to just pay a subscription and have access to games. Not owning a single one of them - no tactility, no display, _nothing._

My fear is that once digital becomes the norm and physical goes away, companies focus more on one-and-done experiences and stop making games that are meant to last. Game design philosophy in the 80s and early 90s was basically "Let's give players a reason to keep coming back." Arcade games like Pac-Man and Galaga asked you to get higher scores, Sonic games challenged you to beat the levels as fast as possible, Super Metroid let you do things out of order to make each playthrough different, Final Fantasy allowed you to experiment with different teams and setups, etc. Games nowadays seem more interested in giving amazing experiences that are more akin to movies. They put so much care into the story that the gameplay lacks the kind of care that was given previously. That's not to say these games are bad or even that they are unfulfilling, but they don't really give you very much reason to play them more than once. The Last of Us, Uncharted, God of War, Red Dead Redemption, even Nintendo games like Breath of the Wild. These games are laser focused on making your first experience the most amazing thing ever, only for the impact to diminish exponentially when you try to play through them again. I'm glad that Indie games have been picking up the slack with games like Hollow Knight and Celeste, but it feels like this game design philosophy is mostly dead in the industry. And once gaming goes all digital, game devs will have little reason to make these kinds of games anymore.

@@jacobmonks3722 I see where you're coming from. I think this is more of an issue with story-focused games in general, rather than something that's happening because of changing attitudes and demands. Sure, it’s crazy to think that perhaps some day streaming services will be norm but I don’t think they’ll be the only alternative for decades to come. As of now, I’m happy with subscription services of retro games, since it’s a better deal than buying each game individually, imo.

The same is true here. I own a copy of Super Mario 64. It's _tangible,_ it's _tactile,_ it's something I can _physically touch_ and know that I own it - it's _mine._ Yeah, it might legally only be a licence, but it's more than that. It's an object, fashioned deliberately and it has a history. Somebody bought it when it was brand new. It probably traded hands a lot before it got to be in my possession - it's got a story behind it. As does every other physical copy of every other game ever made.
They're not just some data held on a server somewhere, they're real. If I'm playing a game, it's all being done right in front of me. The device that I own is doing all of the computational work, interfacing with whatever I've put into its receptacle.
It's a deeply personal experience; an authenticity that connects you to everyone that might have ever played that game; an experience that is only enhanced by your past self being amongst those, or if you're only just adding yourself to that list.
It's difficult to put to words exactly how it makes me feel, but I know that it definitely does not feel the same if the game is digital - even though it might be downloaded to my console, a fundamental element of that pure experience is already missing. If the industry shifts any further, that experience will be lost forever, and that's upsetting to think about.

It can make the game frustrating but it also can make the game more fun to play around with and perfect. I'd still make some adjustments if I had the option, like making it so Mario doesnt lose his footing so easily, slide less aggressively when he does lose his footing, increase the speed at which you risk bonking off of walls, and remove some of the camera restrictions, but I wouldn't change the fundamentals. Nintendo knows they can get away with it and people would still buy it, so they were just flat out lazy with these "remasters." Crash N-Sane trilogy was rebuilt ground up on a modern day engine and was still cheaper than this collection, same with the Spiro remaster. Nintendo's anti-consumer business practices with the whole limited time release stuff and the joycon drift fiasco made me lose a lot of trust in them as of late. I've been saying this for a while. Iwata was a genuinely good CEO with the consumer's and employee's best interests in mind. Even when he made a mistake as big as the WiiU, he owned up to it and accepted responsibility as the CEO. That's what a good leader does.
Also, the reason it took Nintendo a while to devolve into these scummy practices after Iwata's passing is that a lot of stuff, such as the Switch, was already planned and being worked on by Iwata while he was still alive. I believe that once Nintendo ran out of Iwata's good ideas and had to come up with stuff on their own, that's when this era of Nintendo's rampant corporate greed started.

One thing that I'd ike to discuss that you talked briefly about is that these games, except Sunshine, are designed to be played however the player wants to, in order to simply finish the game.
In that respect, Mario 64 excells, because apart from the first courses, nay, the first mission in the first one, you can do whatever you want to finish the game, you just need 70 stars out of the 120 in the game (a little above half of the stars in the game, about 58%) and defeating the final boss.
Galaxy feels slower in that regard because it has an intro, a tutorial and a tutorial mission. Then you open the first dome, where you can access various galaxy (still at a slower rate), but then you have to at least defeat the boss of that dome to access the next one. That is to say, not only you need 60 out of 120 stars, literally half of the stars in the game, but you are forced to do more specific missions. In addition, there are different star requirements for each levle in each world, some stars are tied to the random comets, some you can get only by collecting some particular previous ones, and others are only unlocked after you beat the game for the first time, not to mention what happens after getting 120 stars and defeating the final boss again.
Sunshine limits you even more, because to finish the game you need to get the first shine and the first seven in the seven worlds in this game, you don't have a choice. You have to get 50 out of 120 shines, but you are forced to play specific ones, the others sadly don't matter at all.
It's funny how the focus on story is the element that forces players to play more and more specific missions in them to simply finish the game.
Galaxy does a fine job balancing it, but the best one in this respect is the latest game in this style, Odyssey, which has some moons that you have to get to progress the story in the kingdoms and the overarching one, but you still have so much freedom, unlocking new kingdoms is related to a certain number of moons in the current one and there are so many all around.
That said, I still love all of these games so much, because they're all really fun, but it's interesting to compare them in various ways, a big one being what levels are obligatory in order to at least beat the game, which is what most players are expected to do.

    • @jjc4924
      @jjc4924 3 года назад

Yeah. I agree whole hardly. Especially with Sunshine. That's one of the reasons why I don't go back to Sunshine that often and being one of my least favorite 3D Mario games. Besides halve of the broken level designs, mission structured & Shine Sprites placements that are both being aggravating & obnoxious, going through every single courses and episodes 1-7 in order to unlock the final level of the game instead of just collecting the amount of Shine Sprites that you only need and have an option is so tedious to do & it makes collecting the extra shines really worthless. Granted; u don't need to 100% the game in order to beat the game & it's worthless anyway since 100% it & reward u get sucks. But since Sunshine is an follow up to 64 with it's open sandbox style, it makes it so much worst. Besides improvement controls & mechanics that Sunshine does do better than 64, Sunshine's level wise was an humongous step backwards from 64 that not even an great control or mechanics can make up it's horrendous game design choices. Wish is sad because Sunshine could've been alot better if they had more time.

It can be hard to achieve, but there's nothing more satisfying seeing Mario launch after a successful wall kick. Compare that to how it's used nowadays where the timing window is so wide you'd have to physically not be holding your controller to mess it up. Theory about why sunshine didn't receive polish: Nintendo's been hinting about sunshine 2 (those random photos of mario eating watermelon). The team originally started reworking sunshine, but they came up with so many ideas (kind of like the dev team making galaxy 2) that they decided to make a sequel. They wanted to get the old sunshine out to this generation of gamers so that they can have a good sunshine 2 release

Money speaks louder than words, and all stars is one of the best-selling games for switch. Why should Nintendo change if they're making so much money off of such a half-hearted attempt? They're one of the richest companies in the world, idk, probably worth more than some nations. They don't really need to do anything if the dough rolls in.
Btw I'm not advocating what Nintendo is doing, simply pointing out why Nintendo's not likely to change.
But the fanboy in me wants to believe that there's a sunshine 2 coming after those mysterious images of sunshine art, the text saying "hope your summer is filled with sunshine." All stars was released in September, a little late for a summer title. Could this mean there's a sunshine sequel coming one of these summers? I think maybe it's so, but the fact that it's Nintendo makes it seem unlikely.

I find the controls difference between sunshine and 64 to be remarkable and probably responsible for much of the unwarranted hostility towards sunshine. This is just based on my experience of trying to play 64 for the first time and finding the controls to be atrocious (especially the camera).
Otherwise much of the complains like bugs and frustrating levels is shared between the 2 with sunshine having a few more bugs (that i rarely encounter, even while trying) and 64 having worse level design. But i will say that this port is a definite downgrade for sunshine because of the controls changes, but maybe thats my muscle memory getting in the way amd having no ability to invert the y-axis controls to behave properly. (Like airplane stick controls, pull back to pick up the nose and go up)
I haven't tried galaxy on the switch yet, but it was awesome on the Wii and I'm concerned the port messed up its controls as well.

Great games, meh collection. I feel like it's just missing that "one" thing, you know? Maybe if they included Galaxy 2, or improved the framerate for 64/Sunshine I'd say it's easily a great collection. Re-playing it myself I personally found 64 to age really poorly and agree a lot of with what you say here.
Sunshine however? I definitely see it's flaws and it's lack of polish kinda sucks for Mario standards...But man I grew to love it even more honestly. I just love how head blowing hard it is. Seriously, Mario Sunshine can get orignal Crash trilogy levels of hard at times and I'm alllll for it. Nothing wrong with Mario being accessible, but man, Sunshine is just a breath of fresh air. In fact that's basically the game's whole theme. It's the "diffrent" Mario and I honestly consider a masterpiece....Also SUPER unpopular opinion but I love the blue coins. They scratch my Metroid itch; I just love little collectables like that.
Don't have much to say about Galaxy, I agree with most people. I think the updated controls are quite nice. Not perfect, but the best they could do I find. Well, minus handheld mode,. I like the touchscreen, buy gyro should still be an option. Like you said though, It really is annoying when Nintendo has "gimicky" controls like that. It can really prove to be trouble some when people want ports of these games.
Overall it's a lazy collection, no two ways about it. But, that's not the most awful, evil thing in the world. It could be better, but it's still a compilation of good games.

Being able to play Sunshine in a full 1080p resolution without the use of Dolphin has been a dream of mine for so many years. It's the nostalgia factor, but when I heard it was coming to Switch in 3D All-Stars, I was hooked and made a pre-order. Gamecube controller support for it wasn't there at first, but once it was added... it was finally the time to do the let's play I had held off on since 2014. Yeah, I had the most fun I'd likely ever had playing a game for RUclips in the entire 9 years my channel has existed. I was already aware that the first two ran on emulators with lazy texture replacement (an actual technique, not an insult) and a widescreen hack for Sunshine, and that Galaxy was re-written. I was still hella excited. The price tag is definitely much (hell, new copies or digitals of NSMBU Deluxe still cost $60), but I think it was definitely worth the cost, at least for me. I grew up on the latter two, and only experienced the first one through Wii's virtual console. Something must be said though: 64 should be played with a Pro Controller. Sunshine should definitely be played with an OG Gamecube controller (not a Switch Pro Controller that's modeled after a Gamecube one), and Galaxy should be played with Joy-Cons, either in docked mode or tabletop mode only. Most people who never played Galaxy before would probably play it with a pro controller, since they wouldn't be used to the old style of Wii based controls. But veterans should play with Joy-Cons for sure. Aside from potential drift and re-centering the pointer, I think the controls feel more solid than on Wii.
So I think 3D All-Stars was a good choice as a purchase, from my perspective. The issues all the games have are painstakingly obvious, but I love them all to fucking pieces anyway. Except you, Secret of the Village Underside.
