Arlo, you probably are right. Indeed, to move the next system MP4 and MO2 though I would leave off the 2 and just call it "Mario Odyssey World Tour" or something since adding a sequel moniker would hurt sales on a new system while an incorporative name would do so less. Indeed, they might make it similar to MO but give it a new name entirely. That all said, I wonder why I'm the only person Who thinks the next system will follow the original Nintendo naming convention and be called: "The Super Switch"
Every time I watch this channel, which I love, by the way, I can’t help but think to myself, this man really built a whole brand out of being the Cookie Monster
@@skinbhad Grover is a one arm puppet, whereas cookie monster is 2 arm. Arlo is a 2 arm puppet, so he's closer in design to cookie monster, but his head shape is more reminiscent of Grover.
One possibility that you haven't brought up: It IS coming, but they held on to any announcement or trailer up until now to avoid casting any shadow or distract from Tears of the Kingdom. It's best to have only one major title in the spotlight at a time so as to keep the public's attention focused on it.
And that's a smart business decision on nintendo's part. Keep focus on one of your biggest IP's to maximize profits instead of them combat each other for sales
@@MeMelon A MASSIVE graphical change would be needed tho, so sick of the plastic NSMB style lmao. Would love something in the sameish vein as Puss in Boots 2
THANK YOU! This is the longest it’s been since an actual new 3D Mario. I was in 7th grade when Mario odyssey came out. Now I’m graduating high school next week. I wanna play some new real Mario.
I wasn't big on odyssey the first time I played it cause I found it to be too easy, but after a subsequent playthrough where I engaged with all the extended hat throwing mechanics it's one of my favorite games of all time and I think one of the greatest video games. I feel like it isn't as talked about as a lot of other games these days which is unfortunate, I think it's a masterpiece
Honestly, I think Bowsers Fury was like a demo for what they want to do for the next Mario game. A completely, new, open world, interconnected Mario game. Where all the worlds are connected together and all have many individual puzzles and platforming challenges just like Bowsers Fury. If that’s what they’re doing, I’m all on board
This is probably the case. The main structure of odyssey was close to the other sandbox marios; open world but still split between separated "levels". It's still gonna be kinda sad for me that we probably won't see capture mechanics or the movement from odyssey again though.
I think it's being saved as the first big game for the next system. It makes a lot sense if you ask me. Despite the lack of games at the moment, the Mario franchise itself is keeping itself very relevant with the movie, while in the meantime, they save a killer app for their next system. I'd also bet a new 2d Mario is in the works. I can possibly see the 2d Mario being on Switch and maybe even cross-gen.
In my dream scenario, Nintendo would launch their Switch successor with a "Definitive Edition" Tears of the Kingdom, a sequel to Metroid Dread, and a new 3D World-style Mario game.
@@royceturner9522 That would be a real slap in the face after they left it out of 3D All Stars. Imagine if they tried to charge for a Galaxy 2 port that could have just been included in that collection for no additional cost
@@adrianpadin1840 they already had the balls to charge $60 for very old games running at a higher resolution *for a artificially limited period of time,* i doubt they would have a very big moral quandary over reselling galaxy 2 standalone lol
Odyssey was a fantastic game. The only thing I missed was a hub world where you enter the levels like the castle in Mario 64 and Sunshine. I love being able to have a home world to come back to and get familiar with.
i think it really fits the tourist/travel aspect of odyssey not to have one. The odyssey works as one and although i see why you miss it, the odyssey gets filled with a lot of things that imo make it really cool and iconic that it doesn't have one! Fits the vibe yk?
I kinda liked that the Odyssey was sort of that familiar home. Sure, it was just one small room, but it kinda gave me comfort knowing that somewhere in this grand new unfamiliar place, whether it be a desert or a city, there was just one room you could call home. And only after all of that craziness was over, you got to go back to Peach’s castle, which gave you the feeling of coming back home after a long and exhausting but fun trip
It’s so weird to me that they’re not capitalizing on the Mario Movie by selling a game. Like, it doesn’t have to be a tie-in, just any new mainline Mario would make so much sense, and it would sell like hotcakes. I think if we don’t hear of the next game by the end of this year, it’s definitely safe to say that they’re saving it for the next console
Who exactly is this going to sell the game to? If you own the Switch, care for the movie, and care enough for a Mario game you'd likely get it regardless or buy one already out. The Switch is relatively speaking old and isn't a good investment at this point compared to a whole new system unless Nintendo drags their feet.
They have plenty of existing 'evergreen' mario games on the Switch that probably saw significant sales spikes since the movie. Zelda is enough to carry the Switch along for this year. They should save SMO2 for a launch game on Switch 2 to show off the new hardware
Making a game and making a movie are both very difficult and take several years. You don't know how long it's going to take when you start, and even a few months before release you may decide you have to delay it. There are also considerations like picking a good launch window with little competition. Releasing two such products at nearly the same time would cause a lot of issues.
@@ChicagoBulls1984 They are not making SMO2, why do they want to announce a sequel of previous console game for a new console, the Wii U launched with NSMBU and it flopped. Unless they really don’t want to go with the blue ocean strategy and focus on a high-powered switch sequel for the fans, it would not make sense as a launch.
I think one of the other things to consider is Miyamoto himself. The man has been reported to deny or delay games himself if they don't have that certain gimmick or feel that he is looking for. That's the biggest reason why we've never had another F-Zero game and why Star Fox Zero was the way it was. His stubbornness with games always having to have their own thing I think is both good and bad. Good that we tend to get quality games, but bad in that sometimes we wait forever for something to finally come out.
Miyamoto doesn't even really work a lot in games anymore. I'm pretty sure that he was fully concentrated on the Mario movie and the amusement park (Super Nintendo World).
I had a theory about this a while back. I believe that Bowser's Fury was, at some point in time, the next 3D Mario game after Odyssey. Then, sometime during development, the team decided that for whatever reason it wasn't going to work as a full game. So they decided to take what they made, turn it into Bowser's Fury, and sell it alongside the 3D World port. After that, development on the next 3D Mario game basically restarted, which is why we haven't heard anything yet.
I’m tempted to believe this, but Bowser’s Fury directly uses 3DW’s engine and mechanics. I don’t think they would have gone that route if it was planned to be its own game, and I especially don’t think they would have scrapped and restarted development on it just to make it use that engine. Also, with the way the game is structured and the whole fury bowser mechanic, I feel like it should have been pretty obvious from the start that it wouldn’t work as a full game (and this is coming from a massive Bowser’s Fury fan).
Bowsers Fury uses so much of 3D World that I find it very hard that this was the case. It would seems more plausible if they used Odyssey’s base as a way of prototyping an open world game rather than 3D World. Bowsers Fury seems like it was intentionally made as an add on to 3D World and an opportunity to experiment.
@@seraph4581 I actually believe your theory more. After Zelda's success, I have a feeling that they want to attempt an open world mario in a similar vein to Bowser's Fury. Although, my theory is that Bowser's Fury wasn't so much a tech demo but rather they wanted to see people's reactions to an open world mario before deciding if that's what they should do.
I've been saying this since a year after Odyssey's release. The game is so awesome and fun and creative and there's no reason NOT to do a sequel. Its been so long and not even a hint of a sequel and it's crazy to me
@@darkstorm2579 "Mario never does sequels" The Super Mario Bros. series had five entries - 1, 2, 2USA, 3, and Super Mario World is SMB4 in Japan. The New Super Mario Bros. series has four entries - and if you want to get nit-picky, 1 and 2 can be treated as their own thing and Wii and U can be treated as their own thing. *Mind you* , you could say "3D Mario never does sequels outside of Galaxy 2" and your argument would be more correct, but even there, SM3DW is basically the NSMBW to SM3DL's NSMBDS.
@@Rot8erConeX Funny that outside of the Super Mario Bros games, which were on the NES and SNES (and maybe the 64), which are all really old games. Outside of 3D World and Galaxy 2, none of the mainline Mario games have gotten sequels. Kinda proving my point that Mario doesn't do sequels, especially in the modern era. I'm sick and tired of people saying that there will be an Odyssey 2. At this point in the Switch's life, we would have heard SOMETHING about it if it was real. But no. All we've gotten is dead silence.
My personal assumption is just that the next 3D Mario will not be an Odyssey sequel, which I kinda always figured. I never really expected an Odyssey 2. The story wraps itself up nicely and the major 3D Marios essentially NEVER get sequels. Yes, we got Galaxy 2, but 64, Sunshine and 3D World all skipped out on sequels. And Galaxy 2 only happened because Miyamoto approached the staff with the idea about it, not from Koizumi (who produced or directed every major 3D Mario after 64).
I think this is the most likely possibility. I think Nintendo are working on a new Mario game, that's still coming to the switch. If it's still coming on the switch, they'll probably announce it next month, for a release date of late this year or early next year. If not, then it's coming for the next console. Let's not forget about the Mario movie! A game releasing around the same time might've stolen its spotlight.
Well, on that same vein, Zelda main games did never get sequels until BotW, which was a redefinition of Zelda the same way Odyssey was a redefinition of Mario. I think we will get Odyssey 2 on 2024/2025 with the next-gen console
@@legoboy7107 I'd say 3 years 11 months is notably longer than 2.5 years. A year before 3d world was mario U (and new smb2), a year before that was 3d land, a year before that was galaxy 2, a year before that was mario wii. They used to crank out main-series games pretty rapidly, unless you only count the 3d games as main series after 64.
it’s also worth noting that it’s been 10 years since the last new 2D mario. they could give us odyssey 2 on switch and still have a new 2D game for the next console’s launch
Technically Mario Maker 2 had a whole campaign mode. That plus the fact that people make new courses for the game everyday probably make Nintendo think a New Super Mario Bros. would be redundant.
@@boopityb00p I don't think so Mario maker is the new formula. It comes with its own campaign mode which plays like traditional 2d and then gives limitless play after it's over. It doesn't sell like 3d Mario but it's still very successful and plenty of people will buy another
Honestly, I feel like a lot of people forget that while Galaxy and 3D Land got direct continuations, they also did do a remake of 64 on the DS with a decent bit of new content, which means that out of all 5 of the non-direct succesor 3D Mario's, which would be 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, 3D Land and Odyssey, that's 3 out of 5 where they've done some kind of revisit, and that's not's even counting Bowsers Fury, which heavily used 3D World assets. It might not seem like much, but it does increase the likely hood a fair bit that Odyssey 2 could be a thing, on top of the insane potential it has.
Since bowsers fury continued to show off how good an open world can be, I could assume that the next game will have one giant world and could introduce some mechanics related to the new world
@@ItApproaches Idk. I feel like every time Nintendo incorporates an open world, it works! They put a ton of work and passion into their game worlds, so it feels special. I think that no matter what direction they go in, it'll be great! Including the open world direction!
@It Approaches that's the one thing Metroid does best. It separates its 2D and 3D. Zelda is only putting out open world. Mario is getting bigger and taking longer. I miss the Wii/DS Era where we got a platformer and still had the New Super Mario Bros to give the 2D experience. I miss when we had a nice variety every few years instead of big waits for one or another.
I'm almost certain we'll get _Super Mario Odyssey 2_ whenever the Switch's next of kin drops, probably within the next 18 months or so, and hopefully as a launch title. One can only hope.
Yeah totk was originally supposed to come out around 2021/2022 I believe, so I could see Nintendo scheduling a new console release a few years after that, 2024 or later (assuming it’s one of the last major first party releases for the system). So maybe we’ll get it in a few years? Or maybe they’ll pull a game boy and support the system for some 10 years and we get the next game in 2027
It's been to long and Nintendo is targeted towards kids and Mario Odyssey is no longer as relevant as it used to be so there's no point on them banking on a sequel
@@Lord_Vadr it’s just that odyssey could be expanded even more and so much more could have been done. But if we just get a new 3D Mario game, I would be fine with it
That Doug Bowser line was a zinger. There's no way you got that first take! Thinking about that makes me laugh. Keep up the good work. Your effort shines through in spades.
Actually, in an interview about the Mario movie, Miyamoto was asked a question about the next Mario game and he said to keep an eye out for future Nintendo directs. And then he chuckled. My gamer senses are tingling
I think Bowser’s Fury was what they were working on, and that was basically a test for what the next Mario game will be. It will likely be an original game with open world elements
I think this idea fits very well with your Metroid prime 4 idea. Now that Zelda is out on switch it might be half way into the switch 2’s life span that we get the next new Zelda. Having Metroid be a first year launch might be able to fill that gap as a big first party adventure game to go along side Mario as first year/ launch titles!
That question lives rent free in my head every single day. Odyssey's my favourite video game, and it brought so many fresh ideas and concepts to the franchise, so I'd kill for a sequel.
@@darkstorm2579 On the contrary, because Galaxy got a sequel, another 3D Mario getting a sequel isn't impossible. Also, 3D Land got a sequel; it's called 3D World.
I love every 3D Mario game to death, but it confounds me that there are real, sentient human beings who think Odyssey is a bad game while Sunshine is a masterpiece.
And the fact that the switch was so successful and they're gonna have to work very hard to justify the buying the new one, really lends plausibility to your theory on the lack of reveals.
I don't think Bowser's Fury significantly cuts into their time frame considering that the same 3D Mario team made Captain Toad for the Wii U as well, and that was a much bigger game than Bowser's Fury.
With a library of games and IPs as large as Nintendo’s, I think it’s safe to say it’s that with every wild breath we receive from them, their kingdom will never be without tears.
The absence of a Mario Odyssey 2 might be one of Nintendo's greatest oversights in its history, it would have printed money and satisfied a ton of players without needing to be built from the ground up
It'll likely come out as a launch title for the "Switch 2". They'll need a big launch game, and there's no other bigger title they could have than a new Mario game for their brand-new system. Not just that, but there would be a "2" in the title, which would work nicely for a "Switch 2".
I feel confident about the big reason: Bowser’s Fury. Not the development of Bowser’s Fury itself, but the potential of the gameplay style it uses. I feel that Mr. Koizumi’s team used Bowser’s Fury as a proof of concept for what an open Mario game could be like, and so they decided to change course from a potential Odyssey follow-up to an expansion of the format introduced in Bowser’s Fury.
BOTW is an excellent game but it is not a Switch game, it was conceived under the idea of WiiU. The same thing happened on Wii, we had a TP that came from GCN and then an SS.
Also zelda games have traditionally come out pretty quickly, MM was two years after OOT, WW was another two years after that, and it was 4 and 3 years to the next two games. They were coming out rapidly in the early 2000s
Personally Id love it if Nintendo said at there next big huge gaming news event "We know our fans have been eagerly waiting for a sequel to one of our biggest 3d mario games for years now, thats why we are proud and exited to announce, Super mario galaxy 3!" No one would see it coming.
Great video! Just a small note, but in regards to Super Mario Galaxy 2, only Miyamoto really wanted to make more Galaxy content. Galaxy 2 went through development hell and many devs were said to have struggled mentally during that time. It's likely that Odyssey 2 is not going to be a thing unless the whole team is on board so as not to have a repeat problem. My thought is that a totally new Mario game is coming with aspects of Odyssey and Bowser's Fury in it.
My theory has always been that Bowser’s Fury started life as Mario Sunshine themed Odyssey DLC (thus all the water and Bowser Jr.) and morphed into something bigger that made Nintendo decide to pivot and go with a 3D World theme instead.
Nah, the level design is so cubic that it had to be 3DWorld-themed from the start, and all the mechanics are also from 3DWorld or at least work in tandem with them
My guess is they are making an open world mario oddesy 2. I mean open world is the next big leap for mario, and having a shiny new open world game to launch with your console works wonders. And that could also be why it took so long.
@@WERV2003 it would definitely be as big a step up as mario oddesy, but I don't want them to throw away the new hat mechanics especially as it would work perfectly in an open world setting.
@@danielgrezda3339 I think the next game will be bigger than a direct sequel to Odyssey could ever be, if it's the "BotW" of the franchise then I think it will have a new name so people don't think that "Oh, its just MORE Odyssey and that's it".
@@WERV2003 I did say it would be a big step up, and it would probably be a big as botw or even totk. I just want them to keep the hat mechanics as it would be perfect in an open world setting.
No joke, I had a dream where Nintendo announced Super Mario Adventure the day after this video, and you immediately screamed "YOU'RE WELCOME!" and analyzed it. I forget exactly what it was like. I think it was more broken-up worlds connected by paintings, with some of Galaxy's planetoids.
My vote is on the third possibility. With how Miyamoto is gameplay innovation first, seeing the lack of games like a new sequel in the F-Zero series due to lack of new ideas besides "more racing". I agree fans would buy, similar to how fans have for years with Pokemon, but I feel Miyamoto tries to keep some of his series under key and chain so each game is trying to be unique and special.
0% chance that this is the explanation. And I guarantee that they've already been working on the new Mario game. Just because we haven't heard anything yet doesn't mean it isn't being worked on. It definitely is.
Not only what Arlo mentioned could be true but both Mario and Metroid Prime are so drastically different it helps Nintendo see how far they can take the new hardware. Metroid will push it to its utmost limits, while Mario tests every little inch with its platforming
7:00 saying Super Mario Odyssey alienated a large amount of Mario fans is a bit of a reach. I remember the game being extremely well loved, and it didn't stray at all from the Mario formula, so I'm not sure where Arlo is getting this from. Only complaint I saw (and had myself) was that there were some forced motion controls that meant you couldn't do some things as easily in handheld mode.
The story of Twilight Princess getting Crossbow Training instead of a sequel really irritates me to this day, and cements why my love (but not respect) for Miyamoto has dwindled over the years.
Super Mario Odyssey is one of the most breathtaking games I've ever played. The design of each world is so unique and pretty to look at, and the sense of intrigue as you explore every nook and cranny to find all the moons is exactly what I was hoping the (at the time) newest 3D Mario game would be. Every year I look forward to the next 3D Mario game. Bowser's Fury was not enough to satiate me.
Yeah I’ve been wondering this for a while too. Zelda always has and always will be my favorite game franchise so waiting and speculating on TOTK has kept me busy these past years but I am shocked they haven’t even announced the next 3D Mario game. I think because there are so many Mario spin off games coming out all the time the wait feels shorter than for Zelda but it’s still been way too long. Hopefully they’ll announce something soon.
My belief is that the rumours of a new 3D Donkey Kong Game made by the Mario Odyssey team were true, however. The team was split in two, one would develop Odyssey 2 and the Other would make a new Donkey Kong game. One, most likely both took longer than expected so they’re going to be dual releases like Breath of the Wild.
I think part of the problem is that botw was released on the Wii U and ported to the switch where it exploded in popularity. Mario odyssey was released on the switch exclusively, so assuming a similar dev time to totk, it would come out later, and this late it’s probably best to save it for switch 2 or whatever comes next.
I just beat this the main story of this game for the first time and enjoyed it! Honestly if you choose to go for most or all of the moons and collectibles there’s a lot of content in the game. That being said, I am genuinely surprised that there has not been a new platforming Mario game on the Switch since the console came out. Edit: Bowser’s Fury was great too!
I'm thinking the reason why we haven't heard anything about a Super Mario Odyssey sequel is because the Super Mario Bros movie was such a huge endeavor that they wanted to solely focus on it. I don't think a lot of people really realize how big of a project that movie is. Not to mention tears of the Kingdom was also releasing this year, which is possibly the most anticipated game of the switches entire life cycle since breath of the Wild was released. I don't think that an announcement for Super Mario Odyssey would have overshadowed the release of tears of the Kingdom, but I think that tears of the kingdom would definitely have overshadowed the hype for a Mario Odyssey sequel.
My theory, its been in development hell. Miyamoto isn't happy with it, and isn't willing to release it until he's happy with it. At some point he may (or may have already) can it all together and just take whatever concepts he felt did work in its current build, and start from scratch making use of them in the Switch 2 launch game. But I think if they had a game they liked we'd, if not have it by now, at least have some details about it by now like we did with Tears of the Kingdom, and its unlikely they didn't start working on something after Odyssey, so whether its finally in a good state but they're holding it back for Switch 2, or its still not in a state he's happy with, it just makes the most sense that whatever they worked on just hasn't been good enough to meet Miyamoto's quality standards, and they weren't even willing to talk about it until it reached that threshold.
Miyamoto doesn't even really work a lot in games anymore. I'm pretty sure that he was fully concentrated on the Mario movie and the amusement park (Super Nintendo World).
@@Terranigma23 While I think its likely thats true, I also think its likely he still has new features in Mario games run by him and has to at least give approval on new Mario games during each stage of their development cycle. So maybe he's not directly involved in the development anymore, but if he doesn't like what the development team has put together or where they're headed, the developers have to go back to the drawing board, they can't just keep moving forward with something he doesn't think works.
I doubt development hell and rather development shift, Miyamoto won’t stop the releasing of odyssey 2 if the team is making a good game. I think they have a couple of idea of odyssey DLC and decided to expand there, but realise the idea is not that related to odyssey so they decided to make a brand new game, they wanted the new areas to be connected and open world but it no longer fit in odyssey’s world travelling theme. They may also tried to make a new champion character and it doesn’t fit odyssey. They may also go back to the single theme of sunshine and had a single theme they want to expanded. Therefore, they ‘cancelled’ odyssey DLC and put all the ideas into a brand new project. I would predict this happened at 2020 as bowser’s fury needs probably a year to develop. Open world games have been traditional long to develop, look at the new donkey Kong which started development probably at 2017, Zelda BotW and TotK took 6 years of development(2011-2017, 2017-2023) Pokémon is rushed we can tell so I would think it’s too late to launch with new console and a new linear galaxy game will be the launch game.
Nobody seems to bring up that breath of the wild was a Wii U title, and was ported to the switch like twilight princess was previously, so tears of the kingdom is technically the only new switch exclusive zelda game. The pattern has been One main Mario game and zelda game per console, and that has been fulfilled now.
New 3D Donkey Kong by the Odyssey team for the Switch's successor is my hairbrained idea. This coming from the rumor from a year or two ago. It was more about the Odyssey team working on a new 3D Donkey Kong than it being in the Switch's successor. Which could be a thing as Donkey Kong Jungle Beat was developed by, Nintendo EAD, as they were called then. They then made Galaxy afterwards.
My theory was that Nintendo would announce it as an end credit sequence in the mario movie, but sadly that never happened even though it would have generated so, so much hype for the movie and the game.
That was an ignorant theory to begin with because anyone who cares about movies as art would hate that so much and it would tarnish the movie's image as just an advertisement for Mario.
@@lukeshoo i cant, disagree more, the movie from a cinematic point of veiw was not all that great, the characters where very one dimensional, the plot was rather boring, there was very little in terms of character development. The 3D Mario core team (EPD Tokyo) is only responsible for the conceptualization of Bowser's Fury. The production of most of it was handled by the American dev team of Nintendo, NST. Considering this, they have started developing the next 3D Mario way before Bowser's Fury ever released. There's also to consider Mario's taking as much time as Zelda did, and thus could be a title for the latter half of this year. However, it could also be taking so long because it's an open world title like Bowser's Fury or/and a launch title for the next system.
I legit believe the Mario movie is the reason there hasn't been a new Mario game in the last few years. Myamoto was always coming on to talk exclusively about that. Makes me think that he viewed that as his current Mario project and he didn't want to spread his attention too thin by also focusing on a game. And I can see him being protective enough to refuse to allow somebody else to be the lead dev on it.
If we don't count Bowser's Fury (not a full game) or Mario Maker 2 (not exactly a standard game, either), this is the second longest gap between Super Mario platformers since the series started in 1985, and it will become the longest in November, which we're almost certain to reach because we don't even have a game announcement right now. Speaking of announcements, it occurred to me that they might not have wanted to announce a new Mario game in the runup to Tears of the Kingdom and steal its thunder, so who knows, maybe we'll have a sudden announcement of a holiday '23 Mario title after TotK has had some breathing room.
If western/euro developers had Nintendo’s IPs, Zelda would have been on its 4th BOTW asset flip sequel. With Ultra hand being the only new feature in BOTW2, the Sky islands being the new feature in BOTW3, and the depths being the new feature in BOTW4. And we’d be playing and not enjoying Mario Odyssey 5 by now. Waiting on Nintendo to reveal the next Mario game is painful but I trust that when we finally get it, it’ll be at the right time.
This is rlly true lol. But nintendo has been shit to its fans in their own way (not nessecarily with mario but just in general) and a comparison to shitty western companies wont excuse that
@@captain.carcrash7207 I mean, of course Nintendo isn’t perfect. I’m no Nintendo shill but I have observed them over the years to standout in comparison to western games studios. I know of the whole Joy-con drift controversy, but what else have they done? I’m genuinely curious to know.
I think this all the time. I'm happy for zelda fans, but I never was a zelda fan personally. I was always jealous they got a sequel. I loved odyssey and grinded it till I 100% it. I've always hoped for a second one. More captures, more kingdoms, that's it, I just want more!
I'd love for a sequel to have kingdoms tap into other Nintendo franchises. A Donkey Kong Kingdom, a Kirby Kingdom, a Zelda Kingdom. At the very least a world themed after it and not necessarily ACTUALLY IT. I'd also love a Galaxy Kingdom, a Sunshine Kingdom, a Paper Kingdom where much of it is themed after those games.

@Jonathan Blaqk that is such a mind blowing premise and honestly takes the thrill of the original smash and applies it to a mario game, it's seems so fitting!
I really hope it is being held back for Switch 2, not just because “where the heck is it otherwise”, but because when you launch a new system you absolutely need heavy hitters to sell systems right at the start.
Hot take: I'm actually kinda glad there may not be an Odyssey 2. After the REALLY short story it just turns into endless postgame moon grinding for the cheapest reward possible (just an in-engine 5-second firework cutscene). Oh, and the final boss is literally 1 phase of a Bowser fight and then just a moon rock that doesn't do anything.
Odyssey 2 could fix that tho? That’s the whole point of sequels, fixing what needed to be fixed and adding new shit while still having what made the original great. You can’t deny that the controls are worth making another game around.
@@geschnitztekiste4111 Yeah, but still... At that point the sequel will essentially be what Odyssey should've been had more effort been put into it and not felt unfinished.
Honestly, I found the game quite disappointing. If Nintendo were to make a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, they'll haft to change a lot of things from its predecessor
Arlo, with the next system not far away, it makes sense that the next 3D Mario (being system sellers) would be a launch title. Considering that i wouldn't even expect an Odyssey sequel, maybe they'll go a new route who really knows
With the release of Tears of the Kingdom, only Pikmin 4 remains as a big upcoming release. A Nintendo Direct seems inevitable, so maaaaybe Mario will be in it?
Interesting that on N64 we got 1 mario and 2 Zeldas, and it's happened again. I wish the more nonlinear nature of the world in Bowser's Fury would be made into a full game and combine with some of what Odessy did with it's mechanics, and story/set pieces. You'd have to do something different than timed attacks from the same boss if it was longer than Bowser's Fury though.
@@gelfrecs Mario oddesey was good once for the story and some exploration but becomes a total bog after the bonus levels. Quanity over quality. Searching the ground for a spot that randomly shakes your controller so you can ground pound is a waste of time. Eventually all the moons just become reused challenges and creativity dies. Well im not a big TOTK fan either. After a good 10 hours maybe my interest plummeted because of playing BOTW too much.
@@174Anime I didn't care about the story, I'm talking about Mario's movements and general 3D platforming. It was flawless. Most satisfying 3D platformer I've played in my life. That's why I want more of it.
@@174Anime if Galaxy could get a sequel, Odyssey is more than worthy of getting one too (also as much as we're objectively speaking, from a gameplay standpoint, a Odyssey 2 would make more sense to exists than Galaxy 2)
Mario Odyssey is one of my favorite games ever. Ever! Easily top 3. I loved the movement so much. Cappy's mechanics were intuitive, but had such a ridiculous amount of depth and let you do so many cool jumps and skips. It feels amazing to play. We'll obviously get a new 3D Mario at some point, but to be honest, it's difficult to imagine me not being disappointed by it to some degree if it isn't Odyssey 2. I'm sure it'll be great and I'll love it, but I'll miss Cappy so much that no matter how good the level design is, it just won't hit the same. It's hard for me to imagine that the first-year Mario title on Nintendo's next console would be a sequel to the previous generation's game. I'm rooting for a reveal during the (probably) obligatory June Direct. If Odyssey 2 doesn't come out before Switch 2, we might be out of luck.
Galaxy 3 is possible though, it is a Wii game and most switch audience think galaxy 3 is brand new. Unlike odyssey, which is just the next step/return of 3D Mario, preparing something different with the mechanics, galaxy have a very unique set of gameplay. I think they can give us a new hub world, storybook and levels, incorporating some of odysseys theme and blending existing ones together, have some new mechanics and also use the more underdeveloped mechanic to their fullest potential. It would still be linear as a sandbox game would not allowed for the level designs to be as great as 1 or 2 even though I do think they would have slightly more open levels, something more like honeyhive galaxy or whomp’s fortress. I do think we are going to see a open world Mario afterward as the game would be finished in 2026/2027 if they started development in 2020/2021. It can have a snow theme and have a new companion. Finally, remembered the Wii U? The thing launched with NSMBU, a sequel to NSMB Wii.
I think you're forgetting/discounting the pandemic factor, they had to make concessions in certain areas and they may have decided to delay Mario projects at that time, you have to add 2 years of downtime to any speculative production cycle in the last 3 years
besides it's not like other franchises where a long wait for the next game could cause people to lose interest after loss of momentum, like Mario is Mario. We waited for 3D Mario (discounting 3D World) for how long between Galaxy 2 and Odyssey?
Thank you, the pandemic was the major factor Arlo didn't mention. My theory is that they didn't just delay some games. I think they had an entire Switch Pro planned that would've extended the Switch's lifespan, but had to cancel it because of the pandemic and chip shortage and what was left of the Pro became the OLED, so they're shifting to next gen sooner than planned. Odyssey 2 may have been a casualty of this decision, they might've initially planned an Odyssey 2 but didn't get far enough along to go through with it and instead decided to move onto a new, original 3D Mario game for the new console (I do not think we're getting Odyssey 2, they seem to like designing 3D Mario games around the consoles they're on so new console = new 3D Mario game with different settings, themes, and gameplay). I do think we'll see some of the things they planned for Odyssey 2 repurposed into the new game somehow, but Odyssey 2 is probably not happening at this point.
I hope that one day. ONE DAY!!! That the story of Twilight Princess will be continued. Midna was such a fantastic character. The dungeons in Twilight Princess were some of the best. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
I don't want to hype anyone up but in an interview about the Mario Movie Miyamoto was asked when we could expect the next Mario game. His answer: Watch the next Nintendo Direct(s)
I’m hoping Odyssey 2 happens soon! And I hope it will have Luigi and Pauline as playable characters, return of Cappy and Tiara, new Bonneter characters, return of the Broodals, possibly Daisy as a DLC or Post Game character, possible other main game characters, and a new song to follow Jump Up! Arlo, you probably are right. Indeed, to move the next system MP4 and MO2 though I would leave off the 2 and just call it "Mario Odyssey World Tour" or something since adding a sequel moniker would hurt sales on a new system while an incorporative name would do so less.

Yeah, easily the best Switch game. Shame it isn’t recognized as much as it should be.
More like Bowser’s Fury but with Odyssey’s moveset would be perfect to me
Yeah I don’t even want odyssey 2. I want something like bowsers fury
I sure hope so, since the power up aspect was very fresh and exciting
This is probably the case. The main structure of odyssey was close to the other sandbox marios; open world but still split between separated "levels". It's still gonna be kinda sad for me that we probably won't see capture mechanics or the movement from odyssey again though.
I liked that game but I really hope not.
I think it's being saved as the first big game for the next system. It makes a lot sense if you ask me. Despite the lack of games at the moment, the Mario franchise itself is keeping itself very relevant with the movie, while in the meantime, they save a killer app for their next system.

@@eliben4066 The Odyssey was just too small. I like when the hub is explorable and you open different areas as the game progresses.
@@eliben4066 Exactly! I loved it!
Nintendo sometimes do and don't like money
Exactly.
Miyamoto doesn't even really work a lot in games anymore. I'm pretty sure that he was fully concentrated on the Mario movie and the amusement park (Super Nintendo World).
Yeah
miyamoto’s 71, i seriously doubt he’s still heavily involved
I don't think this has been the case for about 5 years now.
Or... They did Bowser's Fury as a tech demo/exercise on a true open world mario and decided to sell it anyway.
@@david_03.13 in retrospect I think you're right.
Its been so long and not even a hint of a sequel and it's crazy to me
Same

A game releasing around the same time might've stolen its spotlight.
bro, 3D World is a sequel itself
Mario games never cared about continuity or story
theres also that cancelled mario64 sequel for the dd
Well, on that same vein, Zelda main games did never get sequels until BotW, which was a redefinition of Zelda the same way Odyssey was a redefinition of Mario. I think we will get Odyssey 2 on 2024/2025 with the next-gen console
I can only assume it's taking this long because, like with the gap between 3d world and odyssey, they're cooking up something big. I hope.

I feel that Mr. Koizumi’s team used Bowser’s Fury as a proof of concept for what an open Mario game could be like, and so they decided to change course from a potential Odyssey follow-up to an expansion of the format introduced in Bowser’s Fury.
Finally, and Arlo recommends I actually agree with. Soundfont swaps/high quality rips/fusion collabs go hard
Seriously, what world do we live in where we get a ZELDA sequel before MARIO?! 😳
Yeah, like FOR REAL!
BOTW is an excellent game but it is not a Switch game, it was conceived under the idea of WiiU.
The same thing happened on Wii, we had a TP that came from GCN and then an SS.
N64 and Gamecube would like a word
I mean SMO came out after BOTW
You'd think with the movie's success they'd have a game in the works to capitalize on it.
I think we could possibly get a 2D Mario game this Holiday, but I don't think its proximity to the Mario Movie was ever considered.
One of the few things Sega was decently smart about
My theory has always been that Bowser’s Fury started life as Mario Sunshine themed Odyssey DLC (thus all the water and Bowser Jr.) and morphed into something bigger that made Nintendo decide to pivot and go with a 3D World theme instead.
Nah, the level design is so cubic that it had to be 3DWorld-themed from the start, and all the mechanics are also from 3DWorld or at least work in tandem with them
Nope, the only thing why Bowser‘s Fury exist is that they didn‘t want people think they spend 60 bucks for a cheap Wii U port game.
My guess is they are making an open world mario oddesy 2. I mean open world is the next big leap for mario, and having a shiny new open world game to launch with your console works wonders. And that could also be why it took so long.
If the next Mario game is open world, then isn't Mario Odyssey 2, its a totally new game.
To be fair, we DID get a second & THIRD odyssey-like journey with Mario earlier this year...
...in the cinema & in Universal Studios. ;)
The fact that they haven’t even announced it yet is a bigger crime than them taking 6 years to release TOtK
Because it doesn’t exist.
My theory is that Miyamoto was so involved in the movie that he was just too busy and didn’t want anyone doing it without him
Miyamoto is barely involved with development of the games these days. He just oversees them.
0% chance that this is the explanation. And I guarantee that they've already been working on the new Mario game. Just because we haven't heard anything yet doesn't mean it isn't being worked on. It definitely is.
@@MarkHogan994 Yeah. And like I said, Miyamoto is barely involved with the game development these days.
Was literally talking about this to my girlfriend yesterday. It’s crazy how long it’s been since main line Mario game.
Super Mario Odyssey's all-time sales really puts TotK's 3-day sales into perspective.
I am sad that my parents don't have money to get Tears Of The Kingdom, but when we do, I am gonna play the HELL out of it
You could do some side jobs this summer and help them out with the money. Would likely make the game even better for you if you helped pay for it.
Don't make my mistake with Odyssey and watch too many lets plays, spoiling the game and making it underwhelming to actually play.
I just got it today. An I like it..
if your switch is old enough, hack it and pirate totk
A mix of Odyssey and Galaxy would be THE game
*checks under rock*
Mario Odyssey 2: Ya-ha-ha! You found me!
Didn’t Miyamoto tell us to stay tuned for the next Direct for Mario news during one of the Mario movie interviews?
Cross your fingers 🤞🏻
That's generic PR speak that doesn't point to anything one way or another, that doesn't necessarily mean an announcement is coming soon.
The movie already had nintendo trailers before, and the folk who enjoyed it where mario fans and kids, not the general film going audience, if they put an end credit sequence as a trailer for a new 3d mario game the folk who stayed to see it would be long term mario fans and not the film audience
If you see it as too slimey for nintendo just remembered that one movie the wizard. And lastly if not a advertisement for the mario brand what else is it?
They would never announce a game in a movie.
@@tofer1000 the fact that you disagree means nothing tbh, objectively it's not a decision that any filmmaker would ever make, and the people who made the Mario movie are actually artists, unlike you
My heart aches for this, and also for a TTYD remaster.
Me too
What is it with people's obsession with remasters, especially for games that don't need them. Do you just mean you want TTYD on the Switch?
@@renaterrier935 Remaster, port, whatever. I just want it on Switch.
@@renaterrier935 a simple HD remaster on the switch would be great. There is a HD mod for the pc rom and it looks way better than the original one. @@renaterrier935 Gamecube games are a lot pricy these days. Also this game aged really well, so why not. 😁
Kenta Motokura has become the lead director for the 3D Mario games though
It’s likely going to be a launch title for Nintendo’s next console
I'd rather it be something new entirely.
Or Metroid Prime 4.
@@alexh7513 We're talking about MARIO games. Not Nintendo in general.

I was half hoping that something like it was a part of the game since much of the "post game" is like the never ending ending in Lord of the Rings. Aka. it just keeps coming.
I was thinking since we got Mushroom Kingdom wouldn't it be rad if there were something from a other game or franchise?
@Jonathan Blaqk that is such a mind blowing premise and honestly takes the thrill of the original smash and applies it to a mario game, it's seems so fitting!
I really hope it is being held back for Switch 2, not just because “where the heck is it otherwise”, but because when you launch a new system you absolutely need heavy hitters to sell systems right at the start.
Players gonna get impatient and just build Odyssey 2 inside Tears of the Kingdom
I’m one of the people who Odyssey “didn’t quite do it for” one of the reasons I’ve been GREATLY anticipating a sequel or some kind of new Mario game.
Honestly, I found the game quite disappointing. If Nintendo were to make a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, they'll haft to change a lot of things from its predecessor
I thought Odeysee was ard it didn't knock my socks off. I did like the graphics tho...
And Pikmin 4.
In all seriousness, where is Super Mario Odyssey 2?
There making something new from the ground up instead.

13:38 The next mario cant be better than this line delivery
After the Mario movie, it would be a crime to not have a sequel to one of Mario's most successful games as a launch title
Hi past Arlo, can confirm Tears of the Kingdom is incredible
