The Switch's longevity has been very impressive, the fact that Arlo's selections here will likely leave many dissatisfied is a testament to how successful this console has been
@Zoomer Waffen considering that half the kids in my school own a switch, and there is data to show that the switch is appealing to numerous age ranges, I doubt this is the case.
@Zoomer Waffen Considering it sells incredibly in all age groups and tons of the games are new, innovative experiences that have record sales in existing or new franchises that previously weren't very successful or at least weren't anywhere near that successful, your statement is objectively false.
@Zoomer Waffen you mean the trend of remakes and remasters or releases of older titles that is happening on every platform. Makes since a company wants to put their titles on the best selling console.
It’s really crazy that in November it’ll have been a decade since the Wii U launched. It really feels like every year gets faster and faster the older I get.
There is truth in that, our perception of time is tied to new information. When we are children and young adults, almost everyday is filled with new information, people, situations, and experiences. As we settle into adulthood, the new things become fewer and further between, leading to our perception of time "speeding up". If you want to slow the clock, learn something new, go somewhere strange, meet intresting people!
Hey Arlo, I just wanna saw how proud of you I am for putting out countlesa content despite all the stuff you personally go through. Don't forget about even the smallest of victories, and thank you for continually putting out all your fantastic videos!
I think about this all the time. I struggle with mental health/personal issues too, and I’m AMAZED at how much Arlo is able to get done despite his own. That could be a way of coping with it, but it’s still impressive!
I love Stardew’s placement. It makes 8 year old me feel so validated for loving Harvest Moon so much as a kid. I always felt the odd one out, I barely knew anyone that even knew what the series was. That the formula still works present day and that someone cares enough about that style of game to take it to the next level still brings me immense joy
Everything about that game is so freakin wholesome, both in the actual content and the its irl circumstances. It's the passion project of one man looking at Harvest Moon and going, "I love this and want to make this genre as perfect as it can be." And proceeded to do that for nearly 10 years to the point of surpassing his inspiration.
Stardew is one of the greatest games of all time IMO. I would put it next to Terraria as my personal favorites. Cant say enough good things about both of thoes games, and even though they are not very old, it has the super nintendo nostalgic feel to them that keep me coming back.
I know exactly how this is being a Rune Factory fan myself. Stardew valley definitely scratches that itch that we haven't really gotten since Rune Factory 3. (Although Tides of Destiny was one of my favorites)
Arlo is a man (or puppet?) of culture and I don’t doubt him for this half-a-decade for Switch review. Thanks for this, it’s going to be a good watch for tomorrow morning (in eastern time).
damn how experiences vary, I picked it up to and have been wanting to for long, but my god did I absolutely hate the game, felt like it controlled like shit when ur a tad bit slow and so unsatisfying when you aren't very fast. I've probably only played half an hour so maybe it just had to grow on me but I really don't want to get into it.
I love the game but the first two worlds being classic levels really didn’t sit well with me I know it gets better after that but they should’ve focused on strictly new levels the game really needs a sequel that capitalizes on that
@@justinjagt7633 that's sonic for you. It's the best 2D sonic level design and control wise so if it's not for you then it's just not for you. I think it's pretty fun but yeah whenever your not going fast it's not fun.
I've to say that Mario & Rabbids is one of my favorite relatively new IPs Nintendo has announced since over a decade. So much charm, am excited for the sequel!
Very excited to see how the sequel changes up gameplay. I didn't play the first one but it looked pretty great, and the way this second game is looking I'm very dangerously close to needing it, lol.
YES! One of my favorites on the switch for sure! Who knew that a X2 strategy style game with rabbids characters (which are basically ubisofts version of minions) can be so fun?! With laugh out loud moments (The phantom boss) amazing music and actually solid DLC content, this is one of my all time favorites. But I seriously doubt many games can even come close to BOTW. That game glued me to the screen and made me feel like I'm 13 playing on my N64 Ocarina of time again, with the same sense of wonder and amazement after every corner.
Same! It's such a strange concept that everyone was very wary of when it was announced, and now that everyone has played it, it's truly a masterpiece of a crossover. It looks like the sequel is really gonna change up the gameplay, so I really do hope it drops soon-ish.
I got it on sale the other day and I’m absolutely blown away! Tons of charm and humor, and the strategy gameplay is excellent. If you’re on the fence about this one, it’s currently on sale in the eShop for 75% off, do yourself a favor and get it!
Personally my favorite Switch game is Super Smash Bros Ultimate, this game pulled together so many games and kinda of gamers into a celebration of video game history. The games whole life cycle was rich with fantastic reveals and fan moments we never thought would happen in a million years and it made it so magical. Nothing will ever beat the experience of being a Smash fan from 2018-2021 for me and for that reason and the fact that Ultimate is such an incredibly balanced and fun game, Ultimate is my favorite Switch game.
I played smash bros 64 and melee all the time when I was a teenager with my friends. I never played anything after melee and the switch reinvigorated my love for nintendo, so ultimate was pretty amazing for me too. In the leadup I got really excited to pick a new main and then it was so much fun getting better and learning how to actually play the game instead of what we thought we were doing back in the day lol. Such a beautiful game with so much good music and characters. I never got tired of looking at and controlling pink donkey kong. He just pops, his design is cute and cool at the same time. The way he blows air his nose like a teakettle when you unleash a fully charged punch and when his eyes roll around all goofy when people break your shield. I always played fox in melee and would rush down people, but I decided I love donkey kong and heavyweight would be a nice change and man it was fun learning to play DK. AHHHHHH brings back memories sorry for rant, your comment just got me reminiscing. My nephew got INSANELY good at the game, way better than I ever was.
I have a lot of problems with Smash but its not enough to kill it for me. I still love the game and I'd say as guilty as I feel about it its probably top 3 for me
@@JoeMama-yd1ve the game's roster is so massive I can never settle on just one character lol. I generally play the Final Fantasy characters but I have such a soft spot for heavies man, I think my DK has a better winrate than my Sephiroth does, probably my favorite character to just play is Ganon. If you pick the game back up you should try out some more characters similar to DK's playstyle like Bowser or Cloud, maybe give some of the DLC a look too, especially considering the stags and music cuz some of those OSTs are really, really good (Terry and Kazuya cough cough). Really nice to read wholesome stories once and a while, rare on the internet to feel heartwarmed by something
Smash is one of the reasons why gaming has continued to be a social event for years. Bring Mario Kart and Smash to a friend's house, regardless of age, and there will be good times
I really love astral chain personally as I really love the way the game uses the second analogue stick. I know it's not super mindblowing but I really love how platinum was able to use the second analogue stick for something other than the camera and actually use it for combat and it really made the game super interesting and unique. I also love the Smash ultimates rumble feature. It uses it really well and it helps me a lot in the game. With the HD rumble, it helps a lot with knowing where I am in the stage and also gives a sense of how powerful my attack was.
Im so happy someone mentioned this game. Didn't get as much buzz but it really is a quality game with cool mechanics and stylish visuals. Top 5 games in my library imo.
Astral Chain is a bit of a hidden gem now. Really a triple A game in terms of polish and production. Got well reviewed but I don't hear nearly as much acclaim and discussion for it as I feel it deserves. I think if it had released in 2022 vs when it came out it would have been met to a greater reception yet Nintendo had that exclusivity deal. Anyways it's a great game. I loved it, the world, the characters, the art-style, game mechanics/combat, dialogue, UI, etc. all is very well done. I expect finding a physical copy of the game will be expensive in the future when the Switch is old news and people are looking back on the system for great games they might have missed or want to replay.
Astral chain is very cool but man it's in desperate need of 60 fps. A higher framerate would make the combat work much better, as it would mean tighter and more responsive controls. It works OK at 30 but like any platinum character action game, 60 would be so much better
23:54 "A series goes defunct for close to two decades. It feels like it's never coming back. Then...it does." Wait, when did they release a new _Kid Icarus_ for the Switch?
The Switch has an incredible game library already, and I think sometimes we all forget since we're so focused on the new stuff. So it's important to look back and appreciate all the great games! Lots of great picks here, the indie scene is so amazing, and nothing beats Breath of the Wild!
My favorite Switch game is Fire Emblem Three Houses for sure. I’m super excited for Three Hopes to come out this summer, and I can’t wait for Advance Wars when that finally comes out!
The Switch has been so friggin awesome! It single-handedly got me back into both console and handheld gaming. Breath of the Wild's wonder cannot be overstated. Summer 2018, I would drop off my fiancée at class a couple times a week, and while she was in class, I would go to the parking lot, hook my Switch up to the car sound system, mount the Switch on my steering wheel, and experience magic for an hour and a half. Absolutely incredible experience. Additional titles that were standouts for me, but not on Arlo's list: 1. Golf Story - an unexpected favorite for me. I adore this game. 2. MK8 DX - My first MarioKart game ever. I love it. 3. Mario+Rabbids - I'd never played a rabbids game before, because I always thought they looked irritating. But they pair perfectly with the Mario universe, giving me genuine laughs, and fun tactical gameplay. 4. DOOM 2016. Impressive port, and I love the gyro controls. I have it on PC and Xbox, but the Switch port is my favorite version of DOOM 2016.
Smash bros Ultimate is also missing. Probably the best game on the series, really only competing with melee. Also animal crossing, but I am kind of glad it was omitted this time lol. Kind of a disappointing sequel to new leaf.
Dude Doom on the switch is underrated. The game is not just playable, on a fucking switch, but very little for my money is lost in translation. If it was the only way to play Doom 2016 it'd still be a 10/10 for me
@@Vyloka he did, he said a few years ago that he got stuck at one point and didn't really have the time to finish it due to smash coming out. not sure if he's finished it since though
I'm probably gonna get alot of flack here. But I personally think Hollow Knight is pretty overrated. Not calling it bad. Just don't see it as an masterpiece. It's way too hard, combat gets repetitive, the map design and levels is an mess, lacks of checkpoint departmentss and it's way too big to fully memorized. I get it's an Metroidvania style game. But honestly, it's not what I call an well design. I do love the art direction and tone it's going for. But that's all it gotten as far as I know.
@@jaretco6423 the point I will absolutely agree with here is the overall size of the game. While I enjoy HK more than you, the progression feels agonizingly slow at times. I think the designers put the charm system in there to offset this, but changing a loadout doesn't hit the same as opening a new pathway or earning a new ability.
I just finished Spiritfarer. I put 45 hours into it in two weeks. That’s not normal for me. It’s not gonna be everyone’s favorite, but go try the demo. That was enough to get me hooked.
@@sagehewson3950 It’s really good. I think there are a few other games I love more, namely Breath of the Wild, Kingdom Hearts, and Ori, but Spiritfarer is definitely in my top 20.
It's one of the best indies but I both love it and hate it. That hedgehog made me feel something so deep. I didn't know I could feel like that from a game. (She reminded me of my grandma)
luigi;s mansion three is actually the reason why I found this channel! I was so excited when the first trailer dropped that I was desperately scrubbing youtube for anybody else talking about it. and lo and behold I didn't just find Someone as excited about it as I was, I found the best monster out there I knew I could count on arlo to remember my boy and I wasn't disappointed
A Short Hike is in my top 3 games of ALL TIME, right up there with BotW and Thousand Year Door!! It makes me SO happy that you’ve played it and love it too!
I love Odyssey and Botw, the fact that so much of the rest of my list would have been different from yours says so much about how many quality games are on switch.
@@jackcola5513 Trash arguments, there are more than 5 good games and it does have a massive game library. The switch is obviously different from a ps or xbox. Take the L
My favorite is Super Mario Maker 2, I love the story mode a lot. I also love the course world and you literally get infinite replay value out of it, plus with multiplayer versus and co op it's even more fun, and it improved a lot from the first with slopes, clear conditions, etc. This was also the most hyped I've been for a game and MAN did it deliver, I love it so much easy 10/10.
It's not my favoirote Switch game, but MM2 was an amazing time. I got to flex my level building creativity in ways I didn't expect. I was even able to create a Super World with 8 worlds. Story Mode was also great for inspiration and fun. I will NEVER forget my time with this game.
@@themc3140 Agreed. The first Mario Maker was a truly special game for me. It had so many small, charming little things about it, and it was bursting with love for the series. Mario Maker 2 just doesn't have that same charm, and that combined with the lack of some conveniences makes the creation process a lot more dull. Playing other people's levels is an absolute BLAST in Mario Maker 2 and easily beats out the first, but creating levels is a lot less fun. I only ever play the game to try out other people's levels and never make my own anymore.
you have no idea how much i would play if the online wasn't garbage and australian queue times weren't ages because of matchmaking/dead playerbase because the connection sucks i swear even americans have longer then they should have for queue times, when you only 3 people.... i wish we could mod this game in the future and play with friends ngl seems like infinite fun tbh
The switch have been a very amazing system so far, I used to be pretty picky on what games I would try, but ever since the switch released, I have tried tons of different types of games. My favorite games for the switch, 1st party: XC2 - Long game with great story, only downside is the combat is complicated/boring at start FE3H - Build characters with different classes and different routes BOTW - Fun to explore, great mechanics Super Mario Odessey - Just very fun Animal Crossing - Cozy game, building/terraforming in peace For third party games, which I would also consider favorites: Celeste - Hard, but very satisfying platformer Danganronpa Decadence - Solving mysteries, finding out murder casses and try to survive The Binding of Isaac - Lots of secrets, quite the challange, always random Stardew Valley - Relaxing, farming, mining, crafting and so much more.
I have had my switch for almost two years, and I was legit blown away how many games it had and the pure quality. It offers a very unique experience and its ability to appeal to a wide audience is wonderful. I cannot fathom the future but it's definitely looking bright in my eyes
I got half way through the video and didn't realize Arlo had split the games into two categories. I honestly thought Arlo just enjoyed indies a lot more than main titles.
I know it shouldn’t count, but the recent HD remake of Xenoblade 1 is fantastic. It’s such a beautiful game with a fantastic story, top-tier characters, and thrilling gameplay. I recommend it to everyone who has ever enjoyed any RPG ever. The extra content from the HD version is really neat too. It does a great job at tying some loose ends in a very satisfying way. Melia especially gets some great additional character development through it, even though she was already a fantastic character. I’m really excited for Xenoblade 3. It looks like it will really live up to this masterpiece.
Arlo loves the world of BotW and really good stories with dark themes, so you'd think Xenoblade would be something he'd like. But the combat being more complex than your typical Nintendo game and anime keeps Arlo away from the series unfortunately. I really wish he could get over those 2 hurdles, because so many people who have those same issues ended up loving Xenoblade anyway.
@@ShallBePurified - I don’t know if Arlo really doesn’t like the Xenoblade series because of the anime stuff. The combat? Maybe, but XC1 is not known for how anime it is. That was mostly a criticism of XC2 if anything. That game did use a lot of overused anime tropes and cliches, and the art style definitely kept some people away.
After the recent Xenoblade 3 news, I really need to try out the 1st one. Bought it in a sale, curious to see if can hold up to the hype/can keep me engaged despite not being a huge JRPG fan
I know recency bias is a thing, but Kirby and the Forgotten Land really is one of the best games on Switch for me. Couple it with SM3DW+ Bowser's Fury, Paper Mario The Origami King, Luigi's Mansion 3, Hades, Celeste, Danganronpa V3 and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and you have a very diverse and great system for me. There's loads of games I haven't mentioned which are also great, that's how many games the Switch has!
@@Dungeon_Dunce2011 I did try Hollow Knight about a year ago, couldn’t get into it. I can totally see the appeal, but I realised when playing that Metroidvanias are not my cup of tea when it comes to game genres sadly.
Both Yoku's Island Express and A Short Hike are just utterly, charmingly marvellous. Positively dripping with character. Can't recommend those 2 enough.
Insane how my favorite game came from the Switch in BOTW and I was basically a Sony/XBOX dude before the system (still am tbh). I can say this is one of if not the best Nintendo era.
I’m a big Subnautica fan (as you can tell by my profile pic) and so it being in the switch makes playing the game so much more convenient since it’s already a fantastic game that can be played anywhere with the switch.
I love Subnautica too, but have mixed feelings about the Switch version. I was very near to the end of the game when my save file became corrupted. Haven’t played it since.
14:35 If you enjoy Stardew Valley I would recommend Core Keeper it's got a similar feel to stardew valley but with some elements from games like Terraria with lots of weapons to find and bosses to fight.
@@Gloomdrake They're bringing Rune Factory 5 to PC which is exciting! I was a little disappointed with it because it felt kinda strung together for a Rune Factory game, but I am excited that it means we'll be getting more mainline Rune Factory games to PC in the future! I just really want one in the same vein as Tides of Destiny to be honest. That one had such a good story and interesting characters to boot.
I was listening to this without watching the screen so when you said “combining Metroidvania and the Souls genre” I was like ok, Hollow Knight. Was pleasantly surprised you picked Blasphemous instead - Medieval Spanish Catholic Dark Souls doesn’t get enough love.
One of the few games out there so good, I completed it twice. (Once on Switch, and then again with all regular strawberries gotten and all levels beaten, on Steam. From there I got to dabble in some really cool fan mods like "Secret of Celeste Mountain.")
I finished the main story of Astral Chain just before Arlo uploaded this video, and I have to say that it is absolutely phenomenal, and one of the most immersive video game experiences I’ve had. The incredibly fun and deep combat, the tons of sidequests and missions, the super cool and unique setting… it’s not only one of my favorite Switch games, but one of my favorite video games, period.
As a Kirby fan, I’ve been really happy with the Switch. Kirby Star Allies was one of the more divisive entries in recent years, and while I don’t love it as much as the previous three mainline games, each time I go back to it I find something new to love, especially in multiplayer. Super Kirby Clash was also really fun, and I still find myself going back to replay some quests (since I haven’t gotten all the heroic missions yet). Kirby Fighters 2 is seriously a great competitive fighting game, and has some of my favorite versions of a ton of Kirby music. And of course, Forgotten Land is just terrific and a breath of fresh air for the series, and may have dethroned Amazing Mirror as my favorite entry in the series (though I may still need to wait a bit for the hype of 3D Kirby to fade before I can say definitively). As a fan of other stuff… #RhythmHeavenSwitch , #KidIcarusSwitch, and #VioRhyseAlberia.
With the type of indie games you were talking about I think that you could really appreciate Gorogoa, it’s more puzzly but the way it puzzles is truly unique.
It's wild to me that Supergiant Games' Hades isn't on your first list. It's a masterpiece from start to finish, addressing almost every complaint one could have with a rouge like. It's gorgeous art style, brilliant story, replayability, and approachability make it (in my eyes) a perfect game for the Switch.
5 years. WOW! It's hard to believe it's been that long. The Switch is my favorite console right now. Hollow Knight is my favorite game. I know Hollow Knight is on other systems as well, but I have only played it on the Switch. It's so much fun! The biggest metroidvania I've ever seen. It has really fun mechanics, beautiful artwork, adorable characters, and amazing music! The story is dark, mysterious, and a little ominous, but I love stuff like that. I also love that you have to explore and look for the story elements to really understand what's happening in the world. Team Cherry also purposely made the game so that you can find multiple pathways to each area and find ways to skip over areas where you would normally need some kind of movement upgrade. Some people complain that the game is too hard or Souls-like, but I like the difficulty, I personally see very very little in common with the Souls series, and I am ridiculously obsessed with just how amazingly good this game is!!! I could go on for hours about how amazing it is, but all you really need to know is that Hollow Knight is definitely one of the greatest games of all time! I also absolutely love Undertale. The only problem is that once you finish a neutral, a pacifist, and a suicide run it's not quite as fun to replay. I'm still obsessed though. I would have ranked it a little higher than you did personally. I'm a little surprised you don't have Kirby and the Forgotten Land on this list. That game is so adorable and fun! And then there's the dark twist at the end! Ahh I love it so much! I have beaten the main game, but I haven't completed 100% yet. I still need to do most of the post credit extra stuff. Not at all surprised Breath of the Wild is at the top! That's pretty much everybody's number 1. LOL I of course have not played every game on Switch. I know there are several that I haven't seen any advertising for or even heard of. I might just get some of your highly ranked recommendations in the future.
Yea hollow knight and cuphead are easily my two favorite indie games and also on my top 3 Games of all time with botw . Also I can’t wait for silksong I am so hyped more than
All around great list. For me personally, I'd have Animal Crossing somewhere on the list. While I don't play it anymore, when I was into it, I got *really* into it. It came at a perfect time, where we all needed some peace in our lives.
Really comes down to the holy triforce of metroid, mario and zelda. The three games every nintendo console should have. I used to put BOTW on top, then super mario Odyssey. But the more I look back at them the more flaws I notice. But really my main issue is that both are completely filled with padding. Repeated minigames, challenges, a lot of just mindless collecting and BOTW in particular has a ridiculously small number of enemies, so much so that previous non open world zelda games actually tend to have more, like OOT. Also it probably has the most uninteresting dungeons and bosses of the franchise, but I understand that was not their priority. For me personally, I have to put Metroid Dread on the top, short, intense and to the point I don't think I've had so much fun with a game in a long time. It has awesome replay value and it is a joy to speedrun. So much so that I now have spent almost as much time with it as with the other two, and I wil definetely come back once in a while to finish it, just like the other games in the franchise. I may someday replay Mario Odyssey or BOTW... but I don't think I will ever attempt to 100% complete any of them again.
Pretty sure that I'm the only person who feels very "eh" about BOTW. Part of my issue is that I really liked Zelda games before and most of the reasons I liked them weren't really as big of a part of BOTW. I should say I haven't finished it, though, so I may not have the best picture. I think it's a good game, I'm just not sure if it's a good Zelda game (to me)...
@@normalgamergal I don't think you are the only one. I really like botw, but something that is becoming more and more important to me is replayability and brevity. I replayable game is one that I can take with me for years to come playing them for time to time. Previous zelda games are very replayable, one of my most replayed games is OoT. Botw is extremely unreplayable (at least for me). Most of its appeal is the freedom of exploring the world for the first time, but you can do that only once, I even don't know if I will enjoy Botw 2 as much as the first one, just because so much of the appeal ran its course. i also fear that this will be a situation where the sequel will almost replace the previous title and I will further feel like there is no reason to go back to it. Which is sad for the zelda franchise with each game very unique and fun to replay. I am also kind of tired of open world games... i tend to only play them now on very special occasions (like a new zelda) and botw did the genre very well and added a ton of stuff to it. But it also falls into a ton of the trappings of the genre.
Zelda is my favorite series of all time and I thoroughly enjoyed BOTW. Odyssey felt like a breath of fresh air and a return to the style of my favorite Mario game, Sunshine. Both are truly excellent games with some glaring flaws (both have too much padding. Odyssey is far too easy, even in the post-game, and the goofy decision to leave moons just sitting around devalues them overall. BOTW can feel a little empty and the lack of what I would consider real dungeons [coupled with the fact that the final area, Hyrule Castle, is basically the best dungeon in the game] kind of hurts the game overall. Playing the Link's Awakening remake on Switch actually scratched that traditional Zelda itch for me and showed me some of what I felt was missing.) Metroid Dread however, is a near-perfect experience. Yes, it's relatively short, but that's used to the game's advantage. It's a speed-running dream. I put almost 30 hours into my first playthrough just going for 100% collectibles, dying to bosses, and exploring. But then I managed a sub-5 hour second run and am going back for thirds with the hard mode speed-run. It's just so smooth, concise, and trimmed down to exactly what I want from a Metroid game. It's perfect.
@@calebhorowitz8057 I fully agree. BOTW and odyssey are just too bloated for my liking, excellent games on their own right, but their scale to me hurts them in the long run. Metroid Dread is everything I ever wanted from a 2D metroid sequel. It is also a marvel of a 2D game, one of the most beautifuland smooth 2.5D games ever made imo. The fact that Dread managed to stand out in a sea of awesome indie metroidvanias is remarkable.
@@diegog1853 I agree with you dude, padding and bloating sucked the fun out of these games. I am a massive Nintendo fan, always will be. Nintendo consoles is all that I own and switch is my favorite console, but I dropped my fanboy glasses this time even if it hurt me doing so. And I realized that BOTW and Odyssey suck, they just do. The more I analyze them objectively the more I see how they suck. But it's hard to see because Mario + Zelda get best game status by default. In the minds of many they can't ever be bad. "Excellent games on their own right" is what I used to believe as well. Then I realized I named them as such because I couldn't see myself hating Zelda or Mario. They can't ever be bad, right? But I just can't lie to myself anymore, these games have glaring flaws and I hate it, because I wanted to love them.
I purchased Yoku’s Island Express a while back when it was on special for $7 NZD and picked it up the other day when I wasn’t in the mood for Splatoon. So glad your recommended it as it’s such a fun experience!!
Switch made me fall in love with gaming all over again in my 30s. Don't care if I'm old or if my console of choice is a pimped out smart phone thank you nintendo.
As much as I always appreciate hearing you rant and rage about bad games or critically analyze those lingering in-between atrocious and exemplary, this was a blast to listen through to. I was nodding along aplenty as you pointed out things we both love about this system and its incredible library. Thanks for brightening my day, Arlo!
Owlboy is my favorite indie on Switch. I recommend it to everyone who asks for a new game to play. (Besides Bug Fables of course :p) Eastward is pretty great too.
Splatoon is one of my favourite Nintendo switch games the colors are just wowwowo the whole thing just feel like a giant graffiti wall the art is amazing and gameplay is fast and fun honestly helped me through my darkest moments
16:34 That's not true. Byleth can have a relationship with every single character, but no other characters can do this. Every character can have a relationship with every one in their starting house, but they don't have relationships with every character in another house/The monastery staff/The Knights of Serious. For example, Edelgard has only a four relationships with someone outside of her house, that being Lysithea, Hanneman, Manuela, and Constance. She doesn't have a relationship with anyone else outside of Byleth and here house. Still a lot of support conversations though, given that most characters have far more than four out-of-house relationships.
I think he's talking about supports in general, vs like just S Supports. And yes you need to have characters in the same house to work on that relationship for the most part, but almost everyone can be recruited to a different house.
"We don't know how much of Arceus will carry over into the mainline games yet...." Well we do know several things-the gameplay style is going to be fully open world. The texture on the Pokémon such as Lucario, Seviper, and Magnemite, show us that they're going all in on making the Pokémon look as good as possible. The engine looks almost the same as Arceus, to the point where people thought it was Arceus DLC not next gen. I've said it for years. Let's go Pikachu and Eevee were baby's first next gen console Pokémon games. They played around with things like color, following pokemon, keeping things true to the original, yet adding something new. Sword and Shield was them testing the waters. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, are the hold over games every generation has one-the enhanced version that will tide people over until the next big thing. Legends: Arceus was them pushing the boundaries of what the Switch can do. And Scarlet and Violet will be what propels Pokémon into the future.
My list: 1. Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2. The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword 3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 4. Splatoon 2 5. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze 6. Luigi’s Mansion 3 7. Animal Crossing New Horizons 8. Super Mario Odyssey 9. Paper Mario: The Origami King 10. Super Smash Bros Ultimate
@@Chiller326 I was considering playing that game until I played the demo. It just seemed like any other Kirby game to me; amazing soundtrack, level theming and visuals, but easy and surface-level gameplay that keeps me engaged enough to finish the game but isn't outstanding enough to resonate with me afterward. Honestly, the only reason I'd ever play another Kirby game is just for the boss fights. It's the only gameplay element I'd say is anything more than just "solid/decent" in the series.
“And now for one more special treat because you cleaned up all your dishes without me even asking……” Arlo you’re clearly not looking at the same mountain of dishes that I am
Undertale is such a good pick honestly it’s super charming and people are still uncovering secrets about it in the code. I like that the switch version has an exclusive boss that you can’t have on any other port of the game
Arlo I’m loving the indie highlights! I have never heard of Blasphemous and it looks absolutely amazing. I love Metroid Dread and Elden Ring so I’m definitely going to give this one a try!
If you enjoy Elden Ring then you should definitely try Death's Gambit Afterlife on Switch. It's exactly a 2D Elden Ring. Blasphemous is a 2D Dark Souls. And if you want a 2D Bloodborne, check Morbid: The seven acolytes
Hope you like it. I tried Blasphemous for a few hours and had to drop it. The visual style made the game feel blurry and hurt my eyes before long, and after 80 hours of Celeste, playing a 2D platformer with a stiff, heavy main character and bonfire checkpoints was unbearable.
At 5 minutes in it sounds like you are saying you aren't going to give up your box of sh** parts any time soon instead of ship parts. This is the 3rd time I watched this video and I still catch that when I first hear it.
I feel like the switch is the pinnacle of development. I don’t think we’ll ever see it truly die. Similar to Xboxes and PlayStations. From the Xbox 360 to the Xbox series X and PlayStation 1 to 5 it’s only ever been an upgrade to the base model
I really love the Switch and despite its shortcomings like the online-service and joy-con drift the games are just amazing. Personally, I like Luigi's Mansion 3 the most. Not only because the game itself is phenomenal, but because it really shows how beautiful and technically impressive Switch games can be.
Hey did you know that Undertale has a spiritual successer? The title is called "Deltarune" and it was even made by the same developers, but only the first two chapters has come out, but the second one came out fairly recently like, I would say 5 or 6 months ago
Since I don’t think it was talked about, I’d like to mention Hollow Knight as well. Definitely my favourite metroidvania with a wonderful art style and animation and intriguing world to explore. Great experience on switch that I absolutely recommend; especially since it’s quite cheap even at full price 😊
@@joshuasgameplays9850 he has, he briefly mentioned it in his video on his favorite games of 2018 but he said he hadn't finished it yet. I'm sure hes finished it by now though
I tried to play it all the way. Just wasn't for me. I love me some Metroidvania style games and I didn't mind an challenging game. But I feel like HK went overboard with the design choices & difficultly. I guess it's not my cup of tea.
@@jaretco6423 Try coming back to it a few years later. It was the same for me where I couldn’t really get into it at first. I tried it again a few years later and something just “clicked” and I fell in love with it.

Lots of great choices between these two lists! I loved seeing Yoku’s Island Express and Bug Fables included. Those are two bug-themed games that everyone should try!
Im so glad youre still one of the only youtubers who cares about yokus island express because to this day its still my fav experience ive had on my switch
I few days ago, Metroid Dread became the first Metroid I ever finished, and probably only the second big game* I ever 100%-ed. It just grabbed me that much; once you unlock each new power-up that makes you feel stronger and more invincible...I felt like it was just a matter of time until I got EVERYTHING in the game. *I think the first was Sly 2: Band of Thieves Also, highly recommend for the Boss Battles because they just feel so dang incredible to master.
I'm sure I know why but I'm a lil sad not to see Animal Crossing! It was definitely a landmark game during the pandemic and a crazy comeback for the series. Otherwise, lots of great games on this list!
Nice video! I got covid like a week and a half ago, and I just bought a new Switch OLED. In this time I have already put in 40 hours into Fire Emblem: Three Houses, probably my favorite game. I love the strategy and the character driven story and building my units, sooo fun. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a very close second. Followed by Smash Ultimate and Odyssey. I have tried to like Breath of the Wild, and while I appreciate the art style, exploration, and puzzles, its hard for me to really dive into it because it feels too dark for me.
Too bad Arlo never gives JRPGs a chance unless it's Pokémon or it spawns from a franchise he already likes (AKA Monster Hunter or Paper Mario). I bet he would love Dragon Quest XI and Xenoblade Chronicles.
I like some exclusives, but I mainly appreciate the switch for introducing me to indies. Nowadays most of my favorite games are indies I never would’ve been introduced you if it weren’t for the switch. Most notably Hollow Knight, which sparked my love for soulslikes and led me to fromsoftware.
Me: [feeling bloated after cooking and eating dinner... just staring at my dirty dishes... procrastinating by watching the new Arlo video] Arlo: 28:30 Me: Fiiiiiiiiiiine!!!
My Top 10 Switch Exclusives are 1. XenoBlade Chronicles DE 2. Fire Emblem Three Houses 3. Bayonetta 2 4. Metroid Dread 5. Super Mario Odyssey 6. Kirby and the Forgotten Land 7. SMT5 8. XenoBlade Chronicles 2 9. Splatoon 2 10. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Kirby and the Forgotten Land should totally be on here! I personally think it’s better than most of these games and that’s saying something considering how big some of these games are.
It's interesting you put Resident Evil Revelations 2. My first experience with RE was through the double pack for Switch and I also fell in love with the series from it. I actually liked the first Revelations more than the second, but it's probably because I never tried the Hoard Mode (I was more interested in the story). I'll have to go back and try it out!
Hey, just met this channel and followed the recommendation for Bug Fables. Just finished the game and i loved, great game, thanks for the recommendation!
I just bought Starlink ultimate collection (all of the expansions) for the 4th of July sale and am playing it for the first time. I have very quickly fallen in love with the art, characters, presentation and experience. While you are probably correct, I would love to see a sequel that ditches the toys and keeps the IP alive. Playing all digital is so much fun.
You know.... after beating Yoku's Island Express I was like "that was fun", and then moved on. ..But now, months later, I keep thinking about it and I'm slowly coming the realization that it's one of my favourite games of all time. For real. Hope they make more.
@Zoomer Waffen Dude you make fashwave playlists, I don’t think this content is exactly your speed. Why are you subscribed to Arlo LMAO
@Zoomer Waffen you mean the trend of remakes and remasters or releases of older titles that is happening on every platform. Makes since a company wants to put their titles on the best selling console.
@Zoomer Waffen Yeah dude it’s a question, why are you subscribed
It’s really crazy that in November it’ll have been a decade since the Wii U launched. It really feels like every year gets faster and faster the older I get.
There is truth in that, our perception of time is tied to new information. When we are children and young adults, almost everyday is filled with new information, people, situations, and experiences. As we settle into adulthood, the new things become fewer and further between, leading to our perception of time "speeding up". If you want to slow the clock, learn something new, go somewhere strange, meet intresting people!

I think about this all the time. I struggle with mental health/personal issues too, and I’m AMAZED at how much Arlo is able to get done despite his own. That could be a way of coping with it, but it’s still impressive!
The one and only ChaloopaJoe😱
Did don't help Nintendo butchered the series on 3ds and wiiu for animal crossing no money in harvest moon gotta sell toys too.
I know exactly how this is being a Rune Factory fan myself. Stardew valley definitely scratches that itch that we haven't really gotten since Rune Factory 3. (Although Tides of Destiny was one of my favorites)
I loved harvest moon on DS, it will forever be the best version. The recent ones that try to be 3D just misses everything that made it special 😞

@@JonasASMR360 I see what you did there.
Sonic Mania is my personal pick.
I think it is such a perfect fit for the Switch, with it being both fast paced and easy to pick up and play.
damn how experiences vary, I picked it up to and have been wanting to for long, but my god did I absolutely hate the game, felt like it controlled like shit when ur a tad bit slow and so unsatisfying when you aren't very fast.
And how cheap the price is
@@justinjagt7633 It feels like that at first, i used to hate sonic, but i learned to not go full speed so i can react, now it’s really fun.

You... Yes, you...

I'm so incredibly happy A Short Hike got mentioned! I love it so much, good to see it get the recognition it deserves!
I didn't suspected I would like it. But man. Was I wrong. Here's hoping the sequel will be better.
Shoutout to Starlink! I can't believe you included it in the top ten, the digital deluxe edition is a steal when it goes on sale
My nephew got INSANELY good at the game, way better than I ever was.
profile pic checks out lol
Let's go, big fan of astral chain too.
It helps with where you are on the stage? What are you talking about?

"A series goes defunct for close to two decades. It feels like it's never coming back. Then...it does."
Wait, when did they release a new _Kid Icarus_ for the Switch?
The Switch has an incredible game library already, and I think sometimes we all forget since we're so focused on the new stuff. So it's important to look back and appreciate all the great games! Lots of great picks here, the indie scene is so amazing, and nothing beats Breath of the Wild!
Hello
@Wiegraf
No.
@Wiegraf People can have their own preferences.
Get of your high horse ffs.
@Wiegraf We're talking about switch here you realise?
Honestly I prefer links awakening to breath of the wild.
Additional titles that were standouts for me, but not on Arlo's list:
Mario + Rabbids is such a HEAVILY underrated game
Smash bros Ultimate is also missing. Probably the best game on the series, really only competing with melee. Also animal crossing, but I am kind of glad it was omitted this time lol. Kind of a disappointing sequel to new leaf.
Dude Doom on the switch is underrated. The game is not just playable, on a fucking switch, but very little for my money is lost in translation. If it was the only way to play Doom 2016 it'd still be a 10/10 for me
DOOM is on Switch? Ok, I'm going to hell for a week or smth
@@DarkAngelEU Every mainline doom game is on switch. Which is pretty awesome
In the third-party/multiplatform category, Hollow Knight is my pick for #1. I'm surprised Arlo didn't mention it!

@@Vyloka he did, he said a few years ago that he got stuck at one point and didn't really have the time to finish it due to smash coming out. not sure if he's finished it since though
Mine too!

I only ever play the game to try out other people's levels and never make my own anymore.
you have no idea how much i would play if the online wasn't garbage and australian queue times weren't ages because of matchmaking/dead playerbase because the connection sucks

Grinding for S rank in online versus is likely my favorite experience with any game ever
Well said
The switch have been a very amazing system so far, I used to be pretty picky on what games I would try, but ever since the switch released, I have tried tons of different types of games.
My favorite games for the switch, 1st party:
XC2 - Long game with great story, only downside is the combat is complicated/boring at start
FE3H - Build characters with different classes and different routes
BOTW - Fun to explore, great mechanics
Super Mario Odessey - Just very fun
Animal Crossing - Cozy game, building/terraforming in peace
For third party games, which I would also consider favorites:
Celeste - Hard, but very satisfying platformer
Danganronpa Decadence - Solving mysteries, finding out murder casses and try to survive
The Binding of Isaac - Lots of secrets, quite the challange, always random
Stardew Valley - Relaxing, farming, mining, crafting and so much more.
Stardew Valley being #1 on multiplatforms is well deserved. What an absolute masterpiece.

6:21 I had a sort of double-take at that moment because I thought he suggested your character was a tax evader, lol.
I'm such a fan of A Short Hike. It really is worth of all the love it gets
I’m playing Torna right now!!
After the recent Xenoblade 3 news, I really need to try out the 1st one. Bought it in a sale, curious to see if can hold up to the hype/can keep me engaged despite not being a huge JRPG fan
If he put freaking resident evil revelations 2 in the list. I don't see why xenoblade 1 remake wouldn't count.
I just love kirby so much...
Try Hollow Knight, you seem to be a man of good taste and would appreciate the game
@@Dungeon_Dunce2011 I did try Hollow Knight about a year ago, couldn’t get into it. I can totally see the appeal, but I realised when playing that Metroidvanias are not my cup of tea when it comes to game genres sadly.
@@diabeticman2194 I disagree, but I respect your opinion and see where your coming from
Both Yoku's Island Express and A Short Hike are just utterly, charmingly marvellous. Positively dripping with character. Can't recommend those 2 enough.
Insane how my favorite game came from the Switch in BOTW and I was basically a Sony/XBOX dude before the system (still am tbh). I can say this is one of if not the best Nintendo era.
2:57 that background segment STILL haunts me to this day. Who in their right mind would sit their Pro Controller on SUCH a shallow shelf??
I’m a big Subnautica fan (as you can tell by my profile pic) and so it being in the switch makes playing the game so much more convenient since it’s already a fantastic game that can be played anywhere with the switch.
I love Subnautica too, but have mixed feelings about the Switch version. I was very near to the end of the game when my save file became corrupted. Haven’t played it since.
Love these big old videos. This will be one I watch multiple times for sure. Thanks Arlo.
14:35 If you enjoy Stardew Valley I would recommend Core Keeper it's got a similar feel to stardew valley but with some elements from games like Terraria with lots of weapons to find and bosses to fight.
I recommend Rune Factory 4 Special, personally
@@Gloomdrake They're bringing Rune Factory 5 to PC which is exciting! I was a little disappointed with it because it felt kinda strung together for a Rune Factory game, but I am excited that it means we'll be getting more mainline Rune Factory games to PC in the future! I just really want one in the same vein as Tides of Destiny to be honest. That one had such a good story and interesting characters to boot.
@@NightmareBlade10 hopefully being on PC at least fixes the frame rate and loading issues
Hollow Knight, the Ori games, Hades and DKC Tropical Freeze are must haves on the switch. Yeah, no exclusives, but damn good games.
I agree, pal
I was listening to this without watching the screen so when you said “combining Metroidvania and the Souls genre” I was like ok, Hollow Knight.
Was pleasantly surprised you picked Blasphemous instead - Medieval Spanish Catholic Dark Souls doesn’t get enough love.
Lmao, I was dissapointed hollow knight wasn't included. It's my all time favourite game
Hooray for Celeste! I got over 400 hours in that game just on account of trying to speedrun it.
I fear the Celeste speedrun. He who can beat Celeste sub-30 wields untold power.
400 hour speedrun? pick up the pace, dude!
One of the few games out there so good, I completed it twice. (Once on Switch, and then again with all regular strawberries gotten and all levels beaten, on Steam. From there I got to dabble in some really cool fan mods like "Secret of Celeste Mountain.")
Should i buy it? Im new to indies kno anymore good one?
@@marlonbrans3567 Hollow Knight is one of the best games I ever played
I finished the main story of Astral Chain just before Arlo uploaded this video, and I have to say that it is absolutely phenomenal, and one of the most immersive video game experiences I’ve had. The incredibly fun and deep combat, the tons of sidequests and missions, the super cool and unique setting… it’s not only one of my favorite Switch games, but one of my favorite video games, period.
Jip... by far! Also Bayoneta 2
Totally agree, between Forgotten Land and the upcoming Return to Dream Land remaster Kirby fans are eating GOOD this gen!
@@VeritabIlIti Six quality Kirby games on the Switch, including three mainline titles!! Kirby fans are absolutely _feasting._
Seeing Stardew at number 1 was so suprising yet so deserving. Easily a top contender for my best games of all time!
Same. No other game can I casually return back to and somehow sink 40+ hours into a new save every time without fail.
LOL
I of course have not played every game on Switch. I know there are several that I haven't seen any advertising for or even heard of. I might just get some of your highly ranked recommendations in the future.
Yea hollow knight and cuphead are easily my two favorite indie games and also on my top 3 Games of all time with botw . Also I can’t wait for silksong I am so hyped more than

same, I don't play animal crossing anymore, but when I was into it I would only play that
He ain’t lying in these raycon ads. Had my pair for a few months now, best pair of headphones I’ve ever had
Playing the Link's Awakening remake on Switch actually scratched that traditional Zelda itch for me and showed me some of what I felt was missing.)
Metroid Dread however, is a near-perfect experience.
Yokus island express is a masterpiece 😍 I´m glad that I am not the only one who thinks so!

I'm so glad to see Starlink here, considering it's in my top 10 favorite games... ever, and my favorite switch game
"We don't know how much of Arceus will carry over into the mainline games yet...."
Well we do know several things-the gameplay style is going to be fully open world.

2. The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword
3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

What an amazing and well written video, Arlo

I have tried to like Breath of the Wild, and while I appreciate the art style, exploration, and puzzles, its hard for me to really dive into it because it feels too dark for me.
you owe it to yourself to reattempt BotW. It's really not that dark at all.

While you are probably correct, I would love to see a sequel that ditches the toys and keeps the IP alive. Playing all digital is so much fun.
