  • One year after release, Super Mario Party has yet to get any DLC or updates, but that's not the only issues it has. Today on Bad Game Design, let's talk about how an obvious slam dunk fell short, and how it could improve.

A good example with this is Bowser and the mini-game where the players have to be in a picture, blocking the others.
Bowser is big character, and has way more of an advantage in that mini-game. He pretty much takes up the whole screen, and smaller characters like Pom-Pom don't stand a chance. It's a guarunteed win for the player who chose Bowser.

I can see that you’re probably pretty young or something, so let me try to explain this as best as I can:
Basically, game companies consist of a bunch of individual people, and those people work long hours just to make the games of great quality. Breath of the wild took like, what, 5-6 years to make? That’s just an assumption, with a minimum of 4 years. And since companies have to get some sort of money from their games, they have to make some games that have a little less effort put into them. If every game had to be made with that same amount of polish, we’d get like 2 or 3 games every year maximum. Which is why we need a few simpler games to supplement that.
Sorry if that’s too complicated, I tried my best to explain it

    • @lair9792
      @lair9792 4 года назад +69

@@cheezbunni3530 well technically you're right but in a hypothetical world where 90% of games take 6 years to develop, after 6 years pass we'd have just as many games being released. Because a game may be started in March, then April, then May, so 6 years later we get 3 back-to-back releases. That's in an ideal world though. And we'd need more people developing games cause otherwise if games aren't constantly being thought up and started to be developed you would be right.

    • @hyronvalkinson1749
      @hyronvalkinson1749 4 года назад +26

@@lair9792 In an ideal world, different people would work on different games, but Nintendo would be super poor if they paid this many people. Therefore, they focus on one or two quality games and shunt the rest, knowing you'll buy them anyways.
Another reason I was overjoyed with Retro Studios taking Metroid Prime 4. Nintendo didn't have the manpower. They have three main title series: MainMario, Zelda, Smash Bros. Zelda generally takes two consoles to make (TP on GC&Wii, BotW on Switch&skipping WiiU completely) while Mario is pretty consistent (SuperMario64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Galaxy2, Odyssey) one per console amazing products. It's gonna get harder to get better games unless prices go above the standard $60 (I'm willing to pay $120 for a game twice as good as normal, but not everyone can)

    • @chelonianegghead274
      @chelonianegghead274 4 года назад +13

Nintendo doesn't make many games anymore aside from Super Mario, Zelda, and stuff like Arms and Splatoon. Most of the other "Nintendo games" are made by a couple of other devs who are all in a little pact with Nintendo to produce games exclusively for their consoles, and except for indie releases these are pretty much the only noteworthy games on the consoles. Nintendo seems to have found the crap that sticks with the Switch console-wise, but as for games they'll always be undermanned because their long history of policies that are hostile or unworkable for 3rd party devs means that they and their cabal are really all there is making Nintendo games, and consumers end up with fewer noteworthy games than on other platforms. And then of course the underpowered consoles are always a pain to develop for. Now most Nintendo games range from good to hall of fame-level stuff, and the indie market on the Switch is booming, but it comes at a price.

  • @XxTaiMTxX

    Perfect Mario Party:
    1. Stars cost 20 coins unless the specific gimmick of the map is that they can cost more, or less, or there's a chance you don't get the star or whatever.
    2. Maps are large and complex so that multiple routes can be opened, closed, or chosen based upon mechanics.
    3. Removal of "go instantly to the star location" items unless they cost MORE than the Star itself does.
    4. Only the winners of mini-games get coins. I don't like that people who lose the mini-games can still compete as effectively as those who win them. The reason the Boos existed was to help bridge the gap in player skill by allowing weaker players to steal coins or stars from those who were good at the game. A return to this method of play would be amazing. Players who aren't good at the mini-games should at least learn to be good at being treacherous and devious at the board game part.
    5. All mini-games rely upon player skill with none that determine a winner at random. This isn't a casino.
    6. Each player moves into their own spaces with nobody else accompanying them. No allies, no nothing.
    7. A return of boss battles. I hated everything about the games that had these in them, but the Boss Fights were fairly fun mini-games. It would be nice if the "Bowser Mini-games" took the form of boss fights where players could screw each other over or work together to defeat the boss. This would at least make Bowser Spaces incredibly enjoyable even though everyone who loses gets screwed pretty hard.
    8. Board traps and item houses are an interesting concept. However, it's annoying that there are so many variations of "just takes your coins". It would be interesting to have other unique effects like "if you have more than X on the dice block as you hit this, it stops you. If you don't, you can go passed without being hurt.". The traps should force players to use a bit of strategy in the board game phase or at least reconsider their decisions. They add excitement when done right and tedium when done poorly.
    9. A reason to collect Stars and Coins beyond the board game you're playing. I very much enjoyed in early installments that you used Stars to unlock features and boards and used Coins to buy useful items in the game shop. I really hate using this crap to unlock pointless little artwork things. It would be cool to see a return to this type of feature. Give the singleplayer aspect of these games something to work towards... or a group of friends a larger goal beyond the boards. Maybe items in the item shop unlock. Maybe mini-games can be unlocked with coins. Maybe you can unlock other board rulesets on different boards (like say a stationary star with variable coin costs on a map that doesn't have it, provided you've paid to unlock the feature). Or, maybe you could unlock unique features for your favorite characters, like items only they can obtain, or taunts they could use, alternate skins for them, or a bonus buff that could be activated once every few turns on a board to give you an edge. I don't really care what the things are you get with the Stars or Coins, so long as it's useful to the game or interesting in some way. I hate unlocking artwork. I want to unlock features. I want some goals beyond "Okay, unlocked all the maps and characters, I'm done" because that takes running like 3 boards at most, and the rest of the unlocks are all pointless artwork you'll never look at.
    10. Return to an overarching story. I know the story isn't the reason anyone plays these games, but again, I'd like a goal. Even if that goal is just to get to Bowser and kick his butt on the final map.
    11. Minimum of 8 maps to play from the start and 300 mini-games.
    12. More varied bonus stars. I don't mind the usual of "won most coins in minigames" and "landed on most green spaces", but I'd like to see some variation in this. "Held the most coins at one time" might be a good one. Or, "landed on the most red spaces". Or, I dunno, "traveled past the starting point the most times". I'd like to see a bit more added to the game. Things that could give players on the edge of winning an upper hand. Not things that are "foregone conclusions" every time you play the game. Might even be nice if you could unlock a list of reasons to award bonus stars, choose which ones you want to pick from at random, and decide how many bonus stars are going to be awarded at the end. Wouldn't it be kind of interesting if there were 25 or 30 reasons to award bonus stars and you enabled them all? Maybe not all the time, but a game every now and again like that might be kind of funny when the entire endgame stars are thrown all out-of-whack just by people randomly happening to get awarded some of the more weird bonus stars in a row. People in last place could actually end up winning the game at that point just because they won enough "bad luck" bonus stars (went the fewest amount of spaces, landed on most red spaces, landed on most bowser spaces, was holding the fewest coins at the end of the game, had the most stars stolen from them, etcetera).
    13. Return of the "5 turns left!" bonus given to the player in last place. In some of the games, this bonus, if used correctly, could turn the tide of the game and get the person in last place a win, or close to a win. Now, it's just a minor thing that doesn't help at all. I'd like to see this bonus buffed some in order to provide a bit of nail-biting in the last 5 turns. You could even do something like, "player in last place is instantly teleported to the star and can buy it for half price". Or... I dunno, spaces on the board are doubled for just them. Or... shop prices are halved just for them. Or... dice block rolls are doubled. I'd like to see something that makes the starless last place player with only 5 coins given a chance. Mario Party always has massive gaps between the person in the lead and the person in last. It is rare that they are ever all that close together, so it would be sort of fun if the bonus awarded the player in last place could potentially push them into third, second, or even first place if things go right.
    14. I'd like a "personal profile" page. Something that would track you and your stats. You know, your profile set the record on this minigame, so it lists you as the record-setter. You have played 586 total games. You've won 2057 mini-games. Just a little bit of personalization for yourself. A record of your accomplishments and achievements.

3:12 This is actually really interesting because there's a similar board in Mario Party 7 but there's a big deviation: the Star starts by costing 10 coins, but then when someone passes the Star space it'll cost 20, then when another person passes it'll cost 30, then 40, and then back to 10. This added a good strategy element because it meant that sometimes you would want a LOW roll instead of a high roll depending on the price, and you could use it to screw over your opponents. For example, you could let them pass you when the Star costs 40 coins, at which point they may not have enough coins to buy it--and even if they do, it'll cost 10 coins when you pass it, saving you tons of currency.

      - 6 is the pirate one, and it alternates between DK that lets you buy a star and Bowser that takes coins.

DS has something similar with the Music board ( I forgot its name).
One of my favorite boards was the DK Stone Statue board, which was linear and only had one star space, but the long route, shortcuts and the amount of turns were key factors on what you would do. Do you try to get a high number to make it the end quicker? Or don't take the shortcuts to collect the most coins? Both options have strengths and weaknesses, which made it so you could choose a strategy for this map.

Yea Mario Party 8 was so creative, addictive and competitive. Mario Party 9 and 10 were just horrible trash with this stupid idea of having everyone sitting in a car. Because of this shit idea it was impossible to think of any tactics to have an advantage because winning depends solely on luck. All you can do in those two games is literally just hope that it's your turn when the car goes truth one of the star fields. That's it. No thinking, no strategy, no suspense, nothing. Just rolling the dice. Boring shit. Mario Party Switch is quiet a lot better than 9 and 10 and it goes back to the roots to certain degree but still no competition to Mario Party 8.

But low rolls don't suck in this game. It just falls to the player to figure out why.
Case in point: If you have one of the scenarios from the video, where the star is extremely far away, then your best option is to use your dice to make controlled landings on favorable spaces near you. If you pursue the star from a position of disadvantage, you'll only serve to get CLOSE when its collected, which then leaves you FAR again when it moves. So the prudent move in that situation is to spin your wheels for a couple of turns getting items and such, and maximize your chances of being the closest player on the NEXT star.

I would love a Mario Party game with a robust map editor, online board play, and loads of custom settings like Star Cost, how many coins each space are worth, which items can be found in shops, and how many coins minigames are worth. Well Wii Party was actually good. The main "party mode" of Wii Party, Board Game Island, may have been the "original" modern Mario Party to some extent, but I always had fun with Board Game Island, because the goal IS to get to the end of the board, unlike modern Mario Party (well, except for Island Tour, 9 and 10, though the latter two doesn't guarantee a win when you reach the end with the car premise). Wii Party had more modes than modern Mario Party as well, most of which are really fun in my opinion (Spin-Off, Swap Meet and bingo are huge classics). All Modern Mario Party has are extra mini-game modes (and underrated opinion but I don't believe Mario Party needs online play) and modes that kinda bore me after one or two plays. NDCube obviously didn't create the great Mario Party titles (2-8 and DS) but I personally believe they did a great job with Wii Party. I feel like Super Mario Party is the most genuine "party game" in the series. Smaller rolls means that players never feel like they fall *too* far behind the others, and multiple players winning coins in minigames means that players that have never played before can still earn coins to spend on the map without relying on blue spaces or teaming up with the veterans. The way items work are simple and the minigames never have too many details to keep in mind.
What this means though is that this game feels less engaging for people that look for intense, skill-based deathmatches with their friends. Large maps had crazy events and strategies that players could utilize even if they're not close to the star to help themselves or hurt the other players, whereas this game only has simple and uninteresting events. Minigames aren't as high-stakes since every player earns coins, so you only ever feel like you're inching ahead when you win. Simple items can be understood easily, but inherently offer less interesting tools than the items from previous games.
Since the car from the previous games made thing mechanically simpler, as did the removal of stars and simplification of items, Nintendo seems to try for a middle ground with this game. Trying to keep casual players or non-gamers in mind as with the car titles, but also trying to go back to the experience they denied the core Mario Party audience. Since I feel like they're not going to make the "Mario Party" and "Super Mario Party" two parallel series, their best option is to give us options that let us tailor our games to be more of a "party game" or more of a "Mario Party game" at our discretion.

This. I haven't played a Mario Party game in over a decade, and I still break this game out and have a blast with friends. Especially with the 2 v 2, river raft, and music modes. It's a great party game that even my friends who dont play video games can enjoy.

But mostly I hear people complaing about what it doesn't have in comparison to other games. If it just had a different name I think people would love this game and the criticism would vanish.

Related to the customizable settings for boards / AI: speaking as a gamedev, the industry has a specific term for many of these things. Game "oil", i.e. small enhancements that reduce frustration and pain points for players. It's a pretty common notion that even if you have a great game, it can be marred heavily by not addressing pain points. No "oil" means that awesome product creaks, squeaks, and farts all over your otherwise-pleasant gaming experience.
As for the greatly simplified board design / dice roll mechanics, I almost guarantee you that started as "Okay, let's go back to the drawing board and 1) throw away all of our conventions thus far while simultaneously 2) going back to the genre's roots and 3) simplifying the game mechanics and systems to make things *even* more accessible and bring in new players. Now that the Switch has garnered such a large audience, we will need to attract lots of more people and new generations to the franchise." So we get dice that deal in smaller numbers, levels that are much smaller too accommodate it. Smaller maps necessarily lead to overly simplified navigation. Each "section" of the map needs to have points of interest (so it needs to have a minimum size), but keeping it small means that you can only have a handful of these (maybe 4-5) with each of them taking up very limited space. Somewhere along the way, the top designers either lost sight of what their dedicated fanbase wanted as they tried to cater to the producers (leading to many of the complaints you mentioned), or someone brought them up, but production was too far underway and there wasn't enough funding / time to redesign things / add oil enhancements, etc.
Either way, with the way the online experience was mismarketed and the failure to understand the game's target audience properly, I think there was just a lot of businessy decisions infringing on designer's perspectives or old-school designers being moved to other projects and having new designers take the helm, making several mistakes along the way. I don't know what the backstory is in detail of course, so take with a grain of salt.

I really like the idea of having characters with different dice. You could have three tiers - beginner, medium, and expert, that use d4, d6 and d8 respectively, and instead of the bigger die sizes meaning bigger numbers, it just means more variance. You could, for example, have Wario rolling smaller numbers but he also gets coins, or Yoshi could have a 1/8 chance of licking up coins from someone else

perfect mario party game? oh boy. let's go.
1: dices go from 1 to 10. of course. but then also...
2: custom dices for each character. heck yea. one of the best things SMP did. also looking at other games from the franchise...
3:top 100: yes. hear me out: returning games, the GOOD returning games. the classics that we know are good. this is subjective? yes. but, id make a survey with every game, so people could vote. another thing id also like to return would be...
4: returning maps. updated, returning maps. at max 1 from each game, but ideally, 1 from each "game era". of course, with a few changes, such as....
5: partners. yes, SMP did that right. it's fun as heck landing on a partner space, but the system would need to be redone. how? this is what i propose: start with a partner, and every 'x' turns, you get another one. by the way...
6: final 5 turns: give us something BIG. if it's a volcano map, make the volcano erupt. a forest? make it night and predators come out. a city? roadblocks get lifted, opening new paths... like event spaces. ecept on a bigger scale. talking about events, by teh way, that reminds me...
7:single player events. as in, modes. who remembers playing trough mario party one's minigame challenge? or mario party 3 story mode with the fun little battles at teh end? heck, even mario party 4's tank battles.... something to do now and then, that has to be fun... but enough about nostalgia, lets talk about
8: new stuff. I would like at less one new, amazing map. topple it off with a bowser map that combines every other feature in the previous bowser maps maybe. as well as a few new minigames, 10 should be fine. also, new characters, not as many as SMP, but the potential is there for sure. I for once would love to play as a koopatrol, or even kamek. dry bowser? you get the idea.

I don't agree with the idea of bringing back old boards. You hit the nail on the head when you explained how old boards were bigger, but had a 1-10 dice to compensate. Would those same boards work as well with a 1-6 dice? I don't think so. I'd rather see more new boards that use old gimmicks and are designed in the SMP style of boards. I'd be stoked to see a new Windmillville or Tycoon Town, for example; their gameplay is very different compared to all the other maps and are a favorite of mine. (By the way, I'd prefer a 1-6 dice because low rolls don't feel as punishing, but I can see where you're coming from as well!)
More stuff you have not mentioned (mostly doesn't fit the more casual tone of the video):
    - Online boards would suck if disconnects or quits were common. Fortune Street did online play very well, by letting you quit out of a game and have CPUs keep going in your place. You could customize the CPU's behavior as well if you prefer a particular strategy. I'd like to see an online mode like that, even though it may be hard to design well.
    - Character blocks are quite unbalanced; why would you ever pick Monty Mole if you aren't messing around? Tier lists are never definitive of course, but there are a few characters that are clearly above the rest, because they let you move quicker (Bowser, Wario, Boo). Only one player can pick each of these. If you're playing seriously, that's a problem.
    - Getting allies (especially early on) feels quite overpowered. I wish they were toned down a bit.
    - There's tons of coin balancing changes I'd recommend as well. To name a few: less coins if you do badly in minigames (3rd and 4th should not get anything), Stars and 'specially Golden Pipes should be more expensive (15 and 20?), so should Custom Dice Blocks (10 at the very least). I'd make Dueling Gloves obtainable from shops too (10+ coins). Also just remove the Double Star Card entirely.

@@DatAtDawn The abundance of coins breaks the otherwise good balance among the dice. Coin-farming dice like Rosalina's and Hammer Bro's are undesirable (the only exception being DK, which I reckon should *take away* coins instead), and coin-eating like Bowser's and Wario's dice are better and much safer to use than they should be. There's a bunch more dice, like Luigi's, Yoshi's, or Boo's, that are objectively worse than others too.
What you said about boards applies to the series as a whole. There may be 60+ classic board by now, but lots are re-hashes of previous boards.
Let's go down this rabbit hole. The mine board's main gimmicks were first feaured in MP2's Space Land and MP3's Creepy Cavern respectively. The fruit board is made up of 4 islands, a popular concept present since MP1's Battle Canyon. Kamek's board is a simple linear board with variable star prices; MP7's Pagoda Peak is *exactly* the same concept.

The non-0 faces on Yoshi's dice are 1,3,3,5,7. Waluigi's are 1,3,5,5,7. Waluigi's dice has an edge over Yoshi's because the +2 movement matters. The downside of Waluigi's -3 coin side, while still too big compared to the movement advantage, is practically negated because the game hands coins out too generously for 3 coins to make a difference. Yoshi's dice is arguably the second worst in the game, having low movement and no consistency; it only has a niche of having no even numbers, which Waluigi shares and does better anyway. If you're playing seriously, there is no reason to pick Yoshi as your first character.

No one is gonna mention the Items? I hoped you talk about this. This game only has around 4 items to add small changes to the blocks. Mario Party 6 (one of my favorites) had many items, which made it fun to get a roll over 20-40, going to Boo to steal Stars, and still having enough spaces to get to an item shop or the Star itself. Fun Maps it had

    Pros:
    -NO MORE CARS!!!
    -Big character roster
    -Fun minigames
    -Interesting board aesthetics
    -Character-specific blocks spice things up
    -Allies are fun
    Cons:
    -Only 4 boards
    -Online is VERY limited
    -No DLC
    -Challenge Mode has no replayability
    -Annoying board layouts
-Feels kinda empty, even with the extra modes
    -Barely any game customization
My final opinion: 6/10 Fun to break out with friends and play 1-2 games with and a couple minigames, but that's about it. Other modes are nice, but the lack of good online play and more boards make it feel lackluster. Also, it should be priced at $40, $60 is a little much for this game.

A big blow to SMP is just how the smaller boards and character dice just work better in parter party, a side mode. They must've worked on that mode first, they haphazardly made regular MP the main one
I'd love for a sequel that properly fleshes out the boards with the QOL changes MPS had. Cause partner party and character dice were honestly their best attempt at a new MP formula, and I think is worthy of another try

  • @The1Banana

While you touched upon a lot of things that I certainly agree with, I want to expound on the overall negative impressions that weren't covered, despite having really enjoyed it as a casual drink-chat-about-things-and-trashtalk-each-other-fest with my friends. The benefits when I tried it were immediately obvious. Miraculously, this iteration was incredibly new player friendly, and even the pals we know who haven't touched a controller since their childhood could pick up and play (and reasonably competently as well). The minigames have become incredibly innovative. At times, I've actually said out loud "my god, this is amazing minigame design". Some that come to mind include the "choose the largest area" game, and the partner games that involve the string pattern matching and block rotation. Intuitive controls and some very creative concepts lead to incredibly satisfying game play for both those new to and familiar with Mario Party.
The biggest issue I had with Super Mario Party is how ridiculously sterile everything felt. You touched on this briefly with the stunted dice rolls, the really generic maps, with little in the way of interesting paths or challenging obstructions, all of which I agree with. But even beyond that, the overall aesthetic is... appalling. It's clean, sure, but everything looks like a mobile-era web page using the most sterile styling possible, complete with plain white text for everything, obsessive emphasis on "modern design" fundamentals from font choice to margins to layout, and clean icons. Whatever happened to the punchy, colorful indicators, prompts and score cards that reflected the colorful personality of the Mario IP?
I grew up with Mario Party 3 on the N64, and despite all my biases and nostalgia having held that game, it still feels like the best iteration (that I've experienced thus far) on an objective examination. It certainly didn't have the same mini-game quality as Super Mario Party, but it had excitement! Mini-games were all or nothing for 10 coins, making the occasional "everyone tries to earn coin" minigames were rare, but compelling. The map was large, varied and beautiful. I can't even begin to describe how hilarious Waluigi's Island is to play compared to that mine. It ran a timing-based minigame that determined your movement direction between 4 pathes, a massive island that had nothing but a bank and icons that were all the same (which rotated each turn), a path that forced you to make a 50/50 choice between continuing and falling back to the start, and a bomb that would drop your coins down to ZERO. Even when not talking about that specific map, the other elements also feel less exciting. Mario Party 3 had exciting and novel items that allowed you to steal from each other, redirect the star when someone came close to it, or even trigger a duel where you decide the wager. Games can swing in insane and exciting ways. How many times have I gotten screwed over, or screwed over someone else by winning a battle mini-game where everyone was forced to invest 50 coins, or miraculously increased my coin count tenfold in a shy-guy mini-game, or even forced someone to swap the amount of stars they had? It was absolutely wild.
This all combines to a modern Mario Party experience that feels too restrained. There are no great swings or massive, pivotal events. The highs and lows elicit a fist pump or sigh, not a straight minute of anguished or triumphant screaming. Reflecting on my childhood experiences, I'm just begging for even a taste of the same excitement. And it pains me a lot because, again, these minigames are among the most brilliant, accessible, and enjoyable ones I've ever seen. It's just too bad that everything else about the game is so clinical from design to gameplay.

Action Events in particular added a layer of involvement that i like, because sometimes, they could be used to your advantage when other players landed on the happening spaces.

Very well put! Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that the UI design is oddly sterile, to the point it was almost startling the first time I played the game. I too speculated that they may have been going for a minimalistic approach, and while I'm a big fan of minimal UIs, it doesn't really work in this context. It's not ugly, but it is, to be blunt, boring. Some of the previous MP games may not have had the most beautiful or eye-catching UI designs, but they almost always screamed "FUN".

    Characters: Mii, Birdo, & Kamek.
Play up to 8 players (4 Teams).
    Board play:
    * Dry/Giga Bowser hosts the Bad Luck Spaces.
    * Chance time spaces return only on last 3 Turns.
    * VS Spaces triggers a free for all mini-game instead of Rumble.
Etc: Some of the text during gameplay are sometimes hard to see even at 1080p.
So maybe better and readable text. For example: the scoreboard on the upper right.

While I agree with many of the points you make, I think there are yet more factors that contribute to why Super Mario Party is less enjoyable than its predecessors, and I think one of the biggest ones unmentioned is the item selection. If you compare the items in Super Mario Party to those of its predecessors, you'll find that Super not only has a much smaller pool, but only represents the most rudimentary of abilities. Even an item like the Boo Bell, as far back as Mario Party 2-the item that made you make a huge leap in the rankings by stealing a star if you could afford one-is conspicuously absent in Super Mario Party. Think about every time you used the Minimega Hammer to interfere with the opponent's roll or make them walk right past the star while huge, or laid a minefield of orbs in front of a rival to lighten their pockets of all their hard-earned cash-no items like that even exist in Super.
That's what gets me the most, I think. Not the boring, limited board design, though that certainly is a problem. It's the fact you can't _screw your opponents over._ Everything is so safe, there's really no way to. Everyone will always have coins, so the person who happens to get allies, and thus superior mobility on the boards, will always run away with the game. It's weirdly anti-competitive to me, even moreso than when duels for stars could be decided via literal RNG.

Watching this, it seems that they tried to make Mario Party more... organised and controlled. Which is just insane, the chaotic nature of the earlier installments was exactly what made playing them so much fun, with or without friends. I recently-ish played Mario Party 10 (I think) with my brother, and while we had fun, it just wasn't the same.
The more I see of what Nintendo does with these games, the more I start to think that maybe some dedicated fans should try their hands on this. (It worked with Sonic Mania, from what I've heard.) Well, for the game updates thing, it's a return on investment. Casual games typically have low long-term engagement from consumers unless you build in a recurring event system. DLC doesn't sell well for these types of games. Unlike most games, Mario Party is rather iterative with regular entries almost every year so we are likely getting a sequel this spring so creating major DLC like boards or characters are taking away resources from that game.

I felt that mode actually complemented the low dice rolls pretty well, since it became less about just rolling the highest number and more plotting out a path for yourself to get the most goodies, though of course that's not to say higher dice rolls aren't preferable. I'd love for it to be expanded upon in a sequel, maybe even with that "older board remake" idea that could remake the older boards with that free movement gameplay while still keeping the gimmicks and events of the original board.

After only really playing two Mario Party games for most of my life, (1 and 8) I gave 6 a try and honestly, it was probably the best one I've played. The reason I'm mentioning 6 is because of how much strategic potential each of the Orbs had, as opposed to Super Mario Party's items which are very basic; instead of the OP instant-star Gold Pipe, you could have the regular Warp Pipe to switch places with another player which could potentially fulfill the same purpose, not to mention that 6 had the items that affected a space of your choosing such as the Thwomp which stops you in your tracks.
