My only complaint about Bowser Land is that it doesn't have a train, maybe the parade kinda looks like one
Now THAT is peak design!
What I feel sets Bowser Land apart from other chaotic boards in the series, is that it somehow manages to be a jack of all trades, and a master of many.
You know, I've heard you guys talk about Mario Party board design so much, I don't think it's ever even occurred to me that most people might base their favourite Mario Party boards on superficial things like costumes and such.
Also, I had no idea the Bowser suit had that extra utility on this board, that's actually really cool!

@@ConquerorsHouse Its only real competition as the game's mandatory Bowser board is Bowser's Magma Mountain, so I think Bowser Land might actually be THE most likely board in Superstars. Fingers crossed

Trapping an opponent in a bowser parade making them lose all their coins then they immediately land on the bowser bank to lose a star is one of the most cruel things you can do in a mario party.

I still feel very much like a Mario Party neophyte, so I don't have a terribly sophisticated take on what does and doesn't make Mario Party boards work. But you did a great job highlighting a lot of what made Bowser Land the most fun board we've done so far. Uniquely for any of the boards we've done 50-turn games on, it NEVER got old nor overstayed its welcome. I think the fact that we *couldn't* stick to the same strategy the whole time helped keep the board interesting. At the same time, it never felt like we were doing anything that strayed away from that central gimmick of the Bowser Parade. I think it's really tricky to keep a board both dynamic and cohesive, and - insofar as I've seen on our Sunday nights - Bowser Land's the only board to really pull that off.
Also, BCG Baby Bowser is the greatest villain of our time.
Also also, I would totally make a Train Level incorporating Plasma Cannons and Bigger Muffins.

I miss old, ruthless mario party boards and gimmicks like this. I can have a little fun with the friendlier, newer games but it's just not the same. It's all watered down. Super excited for Superstars for that very reason. Big boards, good mini-games, more strategy. Seems like all the elements that made Mario Party, Mario Party are coming back. Great video man. I'm subbing :]
Small boards aren't necessarily bad boards. Look at DS: those boards are small but densily packed. Meaning at almost every turn something interesting happens. Super Mario Party has smal and shallow boards.

@@leonpaelinckExactly. Look at Bowser's Pinball Machine. It's one of my favourite boards because you can gain a lot of Coins and Stars really quickly, but *those Happening Spaces* can take it all away from you in one fell swoop.
Now, they just need to create a new game with this style in mind.

I feel like this one’s gotta be in Superstars, right? With Bowser back in the antagonist‘s seat, they gotta want a Bowser board to bring back, and this is a far better choice than Magma Mountain
I was about to argue in favor of Pinball Machine, but then I remembered that they're only doing N64 Boards. Oh well. Maybe we'll get DLC.

I love how Bowser Land has a reverse Koopa Bank where you get coins every time you pass it but if you land on it you gotta pay the amount of coins the teller gave out.
Between this channel & FWOB, the idea of people choosing favorite board based more on aesthetic than actual quality never crossed my mind. That does explain why every Super Mario Party player wants to play on the fucking fruit board every single time
it goes to show how important presentation is in game design
It's a big reason why Mario Party 2 has the best boards in the whole series and Mario Party 3 has some of the most lackluster outside of Waluigi's Island.

@@TarlukLegion I actually like every MP3 board except the Blooper one. 2 does have some good boards, but I’m not a huge fan of Pirate Land, not to mention Mystery Land is arguably one of the worst boards of the series.
@@adamschultz3384 think about it, though. The boards that MP3 has on offer are: worse Space Land, blue board with an annoying gimmick, desert board, forest board, and worse Horror Land with a shitty board layout. Not exactly brimming with personality.
And the horrendous artstyle that Mario Party 3 switched to isn't doing those boards any favors.
Very well made video. I have some criticism of this board though. For me Bowser land was always a board I liked and wanted to love, but just can't. I believe the reason why is due to how overcomplicated it is. It is very hard to understand a board like this unless you really play it a lot. I hate just how little items you are given, and the first few times I played it I could not understand how the parade route works. It's like Ice Climbers in Smash, which can be effective once mastered, but is such a difficult character requiring massive time commitments that many put it in mid or sometimes even low tier. To me this damages the board too much. A board with tons of strategy and which I have always found easy to understand is koopa's Tycoon Town. Choosing how much to put into each hotel while maintaining a decent coin lead, trying to hit spaces such as lucky and happening spaces is fantastic, using movement items to hit each hotel, items which limit the coins of your opponents are all useful, but it is easier to understand. I also feel this one is better when done in tag battle due to how great negotiating with your ally can be.
Can definitely understand that! Thanks for the really well thought-out response. And I do agree - Bowser Land is a board that's difficult to understand on your first 20 turn game of it. Though admittedly, I find that symptomatic of board games with more complex mechanics as a whole rather than something inherently 'Bowser Land' - you usually have to have a person or two who's played the game before in order to figure out the 'house rules', so to speak.
However, I find that if you have someone who knows how the parade works, most players will understand pretty quick how to use it after the first time it goes past. And what I like about the parade is that it resets the player at the bottom right, meaning that they get to pass the bank for 5 more coins, and then can pass the item shop and/or Boo in order to make a comeback. It keeps the item game healthy whilst preventing someone from amassing coins and hitting up Boo in the same run - it's pretty brilliant in that way, honestly.
I totally get the affection for Tycoon Town - it's a super fun board with a great gimmick, and is miles better at executing it than Windmillville. My issue is that Tycoon Town, in my experience, is made weaker in a 20 turn game due to the Lucky Space. Whoever gets it first has a MASSIVE advantage that can only really be countered by getting a Slowgo Candy right before it. It can be frenetic in that sense, but often, whoever hits up that hotel either first or in the Last 5 Turns has the game wrapped up due to being such an easy investment. Still a really good board, I just usually find that a tad overcentralizing. Never tried it in doubles, though, might need to experiment.

The best board is rules land in Mario party 2. Speaking of which, that would be cool to play rules land in the game
same with MPDS. So sad they didn't include it as a bonus feuture/easter egg
Bowserland's background music is also intense, not just in terms of the epic-ess and dangerous sound, but also in the time signature. It is technically in 4/4 time, but the main melody and chord progression is very uneven, and if you tried to dance to it, it would feel weird. Counting it is a bit difficult, because some of the chord changes do not only NOT land on "1", but they don't even land on the beat, they land on a half-beat. It's meant to make you feel a bit unstable, which also represents how the board works. You may be safe on the end of your turn, only to have an opponent switch the parade route on their move. You may have to decide between taking a risk to go for the star, or play it safe and stay away. :)
Its funny. In highschool, me and a friend played Mario Part 2 every weekend until we finished every board, and I remember this one being the second worse (after the nightmare that is mystery land, of course). But looking at this, maybe I wasn't going for enough gigabrain moves.
Me and him should meet back up and do that run of Mario Party 2 again. But this time, keeping league stats like you two, Tarv, and Connor.

My little brother always loved Bowser Land, and so have I. This video helps better explain why!
I wish I had appreciated this board more when we were playing it. Since we did MP2 first, I was really just riding that fun wave without my analytical hat on. Now in retrospect after playing future installments, I see a lot more now I didn't before. This video does a great job at highlighting why it's so good, and at the end of the day you can see my big dumb face having fun the whole time so there's really no reason for me to complain. Good stuff as per usual.

ok, well ill just simplify the Rock-Paper-Scissors meta for all you unenlightened folk out here
the meta breaking top tier is rock, as it comes out the quickest
paper is also great as a counterpick to rock, making scissors the worst due to having a losing matchup to the strongest one
now, the question for the mario party version is which one is rock, and i see two viable arguments
one is that mario is rock, due to being in MARIO party, and having the most canon victories and games made after him. his powers of plot armor and being the fucking protagonist would make peach the paper and bowser our version of scissors because he is sharp and has spikes.
the other argument is that since we are in bowser land, and bowser is the most rock like, he would be rock. this would also make sense considering paper mario was released only like half a year after this game. peach is scissors because of the crown i guess. idk it kinda feels wrong to see a board dedicated to bowser making him the weakest in their rock paper scissors minigame

I started playing Bowser Land for the first time today. (Coincidentally a couple days after seeing this video)
First turn, rolled a 1 onto the pipe at start.
Second turn, rolled onto the blooper wheel.
It is currently turn 15 and I haven't left the top left quadrant yet.
10/10 board
For me, the best boards are from 3, 6 and 7, with a honorable mention going to 2 (this one had boards that inspired full games, like Horror Land for MP6's day-and-night mechanic and Bowser Land for MP7's Bowser Time). Worst boards are, again IMO, from 10 and Island Tour

I was a little miffed at first when you called Toad's Midway Maddness bad, but I see the point you were trying to make. Every time I go there my strategy is the same or barely deviates. 1). get out of the loop 2). go to boo 3). observe positioning and star spot 4-a). If I can mess someone up/get closer to a boo space by taking the rocket ride, then do so... 4-Bb). If not take the long way and visit item shops to make sure I get a gaddlight.
compare that to Goomba Greedy Gala, a place where I've been stuck in an entire quadrant the entire game because of poor luck, getting both my coins AND my stars swapped when I was working hard to just stay alive, Then the next time I play I somehow effortlessly stomp my friends into the ground and feel BAD about something that was not tied to any Modicrum of skill.
I personally think Toad's Midway Madness is even more out of your control than Goomba's Greedy Gala. You can't bribe the roller coaster or the teacups like you can with Goomba. And Greedy Gala has a bit of an excuse thanks to the casino theming. Neither board is amazing, but I tend to have a reasonably fun time on Goomba's Greedy Gala while Toad's Midway Madness is usually just misery. But I'm not really a fan of 4's boards in general--too large, too many annoying Mini Mushroom pipes to use, and every single board has a path that can be blocked off through no fault of your own.

I used to love this board as a kid because of the parade, I just loved seeing people have their coins drained as they got captured by the parade, I didn’t really care I was trapped in the blooper jail, I was safe while they suffer >:3
As cool as SGEP is; the slow candy is rarely worth it for a couple of reasons:
- You can only roll 1-5
- You can mess up the timing easily, it's harder than the slow shroom from 6-7
- Triple candy is cheaper and is usually more useful for getting stars.
- The game doesn't tell you exactly what happening space does what
I miss the actual Baby Bowsers. :(
Real talk, I was confused when Jr was introduced because we already had Baby Bowser/Koopa Kid. It felt needless to have a new character based off the same concept that served the same role that another one already filled.
I've only played DS and the Wii titles but out of those games Bowser's Warped Orbit is one of my favorites alongside Shyguy's Perplex Express because it's just a fast passed crime spree where the entire pace of the game changes on a whim as direction and positions can change at the drop of a hat
I didn't knew that stage could be so complex and full of strategy. I liked the old west board. It had a fun look XD

It's not just the final board of Mario Party 2 it was the final board of all three of the old Mario Party you pop the Mario Party 2 cartage just for the final board after a long Mario Party marathon with your friends it is the ultimate test of Mario Party skill and luck BOWSER LAND
Never knew that the Bowser Suit gives such good items from the Item Shop. Nor, did I know that the Bowser Banks take stars.

I've never even played a Mario Party in my life but this video is so interesting regardless.
Noticeably the sadistic thing about the wheel is not only can you get trapped in the wheel itself but it spits you out where there are no junctions until after you pass by those triple happenings meaning you have decent odds of getting trapped in that circle again if you don’t have an item to help

personally i choose which boards i like based on the music over the theming. good gameplay is an added bonus too

This is the perfect board if you really want your friend back in 99 to break your 4:3 CRTV by throwing your brick of an N64 controller at it. Easily the most frustrating map to play on with friends if it's not Neon Heights in MP7.

I just found this channel because of Moisture Creature and I already love it. Wish you got more attention. I haven't seen to many videos of this sort, but I'm always interested in humurously learning about the design intricacies of games I like. I think bowser land in mp3 would be perfection. The closest we’ll likely get is the map in superstars and I think the changes they made so far are indicative that it would be a likely downgrade from the original

Rules land is the obvious best board change my mind
I feel like this video does not emphasize enough just how damaging the blooper wheel in the top left of this board can be. Me and a friend were literally stuck up in that section for more than 5 turns, the only reason I was able to get out was cause I was able to convince someone else to turn the parade route so it would bring me back to start when I left the wheel. It’s seriously brutal if you don’t have a mushroom or anything on hand.

mario party 2 had the best boards in the whole series which is why it is the best game in the whole series
lol not even close, it had five average at best boards and only one good one (Horror Land), I would actually argue that it has one of the worst board lineups in the series which is my main issue with 2 and the reason it is my least favourite of the N64 trilogy. Not only that but the item system is primitive and outdated due to the fact that you can only carry one item as opposed to three in Mario Party 3 and onwards, a third of all the minigames in 2 are rehashed from 1 also which is just lazy, the board movement in 2 is also slow compared to both 1 and 3. There is nothing Mario Party 2 does that 3 didn't do better.
Damn now I want to play this board. It needs to be in Superstars.

Excellent video. But you miss a fatal point that makes me not enjoy Bowser Land as much as others boards: This board is excellent when you're playing with real people but not so much when playing with COM players. As a loner Mario Party player, I don't have friends to play with and all these strategies of screw the opponent don't feel as satisfatationing as if I was screwing real people. And COM player can also be dumb sometimes.
So yeah, this board has excellent board design, you convinced me. But without real people to play with, the board feels frustating more often than satisfactioning
Bowser Land is incredibly fun to play on.

Goomba's Greedy Gala and Faire square.
Goomba's Greedy Gala is a board see you put high on the "it" list but for what i saw on your video with zoomzike you don't like a single board on MP4.
I actually think you exaggerated about MP4 Quality beacuse i think Goomba's Greedy Gala is a solid board (i think Shy guy's Jungle Jam and Boo's Haunted Bash are pretty solid as well)
I say this beacuse it balances the luck factor
1. There is an item shop at the start that it's a plus in a board with a luck factor beacuse it let players get prepared early on.
2.the roullete is not 100% luck based and you can change the odds on your favor ( of couse is not perfect beacuse it follows the star but it still helps and i think is and interesting mechanic).
3. The dice roll event makes you loop the item shop and that actually can help players.
4. The Boo is has a nice position on the board to prevent abuse.
About Faire square i am curious beacuse you said it it's fun but has flaws.
I think is one of the best boards in the franchise beacuse the players use different strategies depending of the star price, beacuse it can go up or down in price and i would like to know more about your opinion.
I rather like Greedy Gala, though only by the measure that it's the best Mario Party 4 board and I think that's a very low bar to clear. The randomness and planning around it does allow for a level of planning that no other board in MP4 really matches, with item play being made incredibly important, coins being in a constant state of flux (and not just hoarded for lamps and balls), and the Goomba checkpoints genuinely make the Mega and Mini Mushrooms work. The way the board is divided also makes it hurt the least by the Mini-Mega system, which is a blight on every single 4 board by making the simple act of "Skeleton key" luck-based and swallowing up basic movement items into gimmicks. Unfortunately, it's also INCREDIBLY easy to get stuck in either of the left quadrants of the board, with luck being the only way to escape from either. It's entirely possible to just get caught in the bottom left for 15 turns, then finally escape via the mini pipe... only to get caught in the top left for the rest of the game. And I've seen that happen consistently enough that I know it's a problem with the board.

Faire Square I really love in concept, but I think its execution is flawed. The bottom right of the board has basically no incentive to ever interact with it, the shell game is WAY too easy during the day to multiply stars with, and depending on how luck plays out, it's way too easy for one player to just snowball stars like crazy. The nighttime plant Happening Space is also crazy strong and guarantees one player gets a 3-star swing, and due to the existence of the Sluggish Shroom, it's not all that hard to activate it. During the starting stretch of the game, that's REALLY strong. Maybe longer games might get more out of it, but I think that board's a bit too punishing and hard to come back in during the 20-turn standard. But you are right, it's fun and laying traps in the center area feels great. It's just such a swingy board that you can lose a lot with, and due to the high star count, it's difficult to use Bonus Stars as a meaningful deterrent because being behind by 2+ stars is very, very possible.
I think both of them are a little better than average, but have pretty significant drawbacks and low comeback potential.

I disagree on perplex express, I love it but it has no junctions and the only correct items are triple (or double if your broke) or slow go and usually slow go goes to lucky space.
