You're being too nice it's the kinda show "bro"-hating (hence anti-Hispanic [and I mean Riveras, Delgados], "Seinfeld"-hating Nords/Jews/Visigoths (Visigoths for those who don't know are Spanish with surnames ending with -ez) scumbags who just wanna piss the rest of the races off. And Rosie Perez, is an idiot. "Seinfeld" is not racist against Latino/as (if we go by the true definition) at all. Many Hispanics had memorable roles on "Seinfeld." You had a clinetelle played by a Mendoza in the "Fuscilli Jerry." Julia Louis Dreyfus herself is part Hispanic (I think a Rivera if I'm not mistaken). Not onyl that but it did more for those type of girls who are broish. Elaine Bene was, and I mean this in a good way, was as they'd say in Spanish, a "machugo." All the ghetto Puerto Ricans (Riveras, Delgados) were portrayed in a good way on "Seinfeld." It was the white Visigothic ones that were portrayed in a negative manner in that one episode. The one guy shouting the flag was being burned sounded like a Lopez (white). They didn't even put rumba music in that episode .The Puerto Rican Day episode was against Puerto Ricans, but against the Visigothic flavor (but that was just part of the show's, admittedly, anti-white nature, they hated on whites pretty hard - portrayed them as "Friends"-watching "bro"-haters (and yes Jerry hates "Friends"). But then a multitude of people hate "Friends" - Angelina Jolie (whose pop father was on "Seinfeld"

They were produced by the same company Warner Brother's and Living Single was a year before Friends. How could people still think Living Single didn't. Wish Living Single was on Netflix or Hulu. This clip is making me want to buy the soundtrack.
Not only that but the opening sequence of Friends where they're kicking around in the fountain... that was right outside the Living Single soundstage on the Warner Bros. Ranch. So, at the very least, WARNER BROS. knew they had two SIMILAR shows that featured twentysomethings living on their own in New York City. Yet "Friends" was hailed as the first sitcom to feature an all young cast. It's amazing how that works.
I've never heard of living single (live in England) so I searched it on YT and watched a clip it's about a minute long of Maxine getting a tattoo, I swear in those 60some seconds I was cracking tf up with laughter😭😭😭 That scene alone sold me the show, I'm about to start season 1 episode 1🥳 it's a shame I'm only hearing of LS in 2020🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ smh
she's being very diplomatic and classy as Queen always is. But the truth is friends is a mainstream show that ripped off an idea in the actors and actresses on there, while talented got more accolades and work after that in the people on Living Single ever did with the exception of Queen Latifah. For the main reason that they are white. they're not the only show to rip off Living Single either comma Sex and the City particularly the character of Miranda was straight ripped from Max
miamivicepastels83 well there was only 2 ppl that really got any shine in Friends and that was Jennifer and Courtney. The rest had subpar careers. Bout the same with Living Single cast.
Chris Allen True, but does anyone know who Kim Coles, Erika Alexander, Kim Fields, TC Carson etc. are? But everyone still recognizes the names Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry. Theres is acting capital in name recognition.
somewhat true..but kim coles, erika and kim all did things and had careers way before living single..especially kim...i think it just depends on the person/fan..because if i saw any of those names you listed from friends in headlines i would have to google them to see who they were..they would sound familiar...but not enough to put the face with and i am a fan of friends..lol
Chris Allen but the cast of friends all got paid a mil per episode. I can make a confident guess that the living single cast didn't get anywhere near that.
I remember when living single was one of the new shows coming out and critics were giving reviews on the premise of each show. I recall that living single was getting negative to luke warm reviews. The consensus was it wouldn't last past 1 season. I remember one critic specifically saying something to the effect of "who would want to watch a show about 4 single women", that it didn't sound the least bit entertaining, and the show didn't have a chance in hell of being successfully. As a fan of the show (for most of its duration), I never forgot that.
So disappointed to hear that my favorite show is a rip off. I didn't even know that Living Single existed since I'm not from the US so it didn't became international like Friends. Really sad.
Yep same here. Tho Friends was never my favorite show, I got really upset to hear about Living Single and how Friends ripped it off without ever giving any credit.
It's not. It's too vague a concept to rip-off. A bunch of friends hang out. It's like saying this cop show was a rip-off of this other cop show. The Mary Tyler Moore Show was set in a newsroom. Murphy Brown was set in a newsroom. The Simpsons is about a family with a fat idiot dad. So is Family Guy. There are only a few ideas out there. Was Friends supposed to be set in outer space?
Victor Qunnuell Vaughns Jr I doubt it since with the exception of Friends the rest are just character tribes which were the same as Golden girls and Designing women which predates Living single. You can pick out the smart career one, vain trampy one, sarcastic one and naive one in those shows as well

And white people aren't the only ones to help in the creation of the internet. Also speaking a language in itself is not indicative of cultural appropriation. I get the feeling someone needs to look up a definition or two....
It’s not cultural appropriation when you already copied something else. Living Single was almost a direct copy of The Golden Girls - and in fact, as Golden Girls writer Kevin Abbott explains, the show’s creator Yvette Lee Bowser even asked him for a copy of the Golden Girls pilot script, to use as a template.
You are right about everything Queen Latifah. FOX at the time, was not mainstream. Sure, there were some BIG hits .i.e. Simpsons and Married With Children, but FOX in general was not as popular then, as it is now. If they put Living Single on a mainstream network like ABC, then it probably would've gotten some decent attention
Living Single was, in my opinion, one of the greatest sitcoms ever!! I still regularly stream the series on Hulu and unlike so many of it's predecessors and successors, the show holds up just as well today as it did back in the early 90's. For years I've heard rumors of a series re-boot and since this is the show's 30th anniversary, there is no better time than the present!! I'd love to see it happen, or at the very least an updated reunion show featuring all cast members (Queen Latifah did not appear in the reunion special). It was my love of Living Single, that actually drove me to attempt to watch "Friends" but I just never could get into it. It always pissed me off that even though "Friends" was nothing but a direct attempt to rip off a FAR SUPERIOR show and in my opinion, as well as many others, failed miserably at doing so, in terms of quality of content, it still reached the level of success that it did because of the way it was advertised, promoted, and supported. Even with the popularity of Living Single and the success in the ratings for Fox, the show never got anywhere near the same attention or support from the network. Though the shows were on different networks, (Living Single was on the FOX Network and Friends was on NBC), both were Warner Brothers productions. The final nail in the coffin for Living Single was the network moving them from Sunday nights, which had been their home from the beginning, to put the show on Thursday nights in direct competition with the very show that stole their premise
One thing that I had never really thought about though, but I guess I had always known intuitively was the Friends set design. They did something ingenious that most other shows of their kind didn't. In the girls apartment , they didn't have the couch facing the camera straight on. I work in Television and I think about these kinds of things. They made their apartment multifaceted and so reinforced the communal aspect that everyone loved. Just a thought.
@@caras4766 Yeah...they really brought you into the livingroom as a lived experience instead of just making you an omniscient voyer. It was someplace you, yourself, wanted to live in and hang out week to week.

James Corden saying "Could be true" and pausing and then saying "Jumping off point" signaling that he doesn't want Queen Latifah to say anything too bad or too true about how Friends got started and why Living Single got canceled. You can tell how uncomfortable Queen Latifah gets from her body language. I go so far as to guess that even now she knows she could really damage her career by saying the wrong thing to close to the truth, afterall she witnessed her co-star get fired by speaking up. It's all kind of shameful that we're still 'protecting' some sleazy action of some rich guys in power, 30 years later. And like Queen Latifah said, it's nothing against the cast of friends themselves.
1000 percent agree here. I felt her uneasiness because it’s a sour topic for such amazing individuals. The way they got rid of Kyle definitely highlights how shady the higher ups were. Watching Living Single is one of my most amazing childhood memories. My parents weren’t together so my dad would drop me at my mom’s house before school. Every morning my mom would get so mad at me because I was constantly laughing like crazy watching Living Single in the morning. It’s a top 5 show for me hands down!

Six twenty-somethings living in NYC. Two are related, two get married, two date off & on, one's a fledgling actor AND goofy, one gets pregnant, one's snooty, one's a smartass. To which show am I referring?
Lol good one! Let me add, even the living arrangements were similar. Damn Friends really ain't shit for this lol. But it happens all the time. Living Single is still the best! And yes Max is owed an Emmy and a few more awards. She was funnier than all of the Friends combined.
Its a tragedy Erika Alexander on Living Single gave one of the most brilliant comedic performances on TV in the 90's and didn't get a single Emmy nomination (I won't say a word about Jennifer Aniston of all people actually winning an Emmy)
Living Single is sooo much more enjoyable than Friends to watch. Whether Living Single has the same staying power as Friends? We'll literally never know, as Living Single wasn't given a chance.
Upon Volumes Right ? Because as of today friends is blasted on all sorts of networks all the time via syndication. while living single is almost non existent when it comes to syndication .
LIVING Single was da bomb, sooo funny missed that part of the 90's (great theme song & funny characters), so Friends was inspired by Living Single, good to know :-)
Her statement was misleading. Just because he said he would like to have Living Single in his line up (and who wouldn't? It's a great show), doesn't mean he stole it. He had nothing to do with the creation, writing or pitch of Friends. The only involvement he had was approving the season and approving casting choices. He was actually very hesitant about friends in the beginning.
I AM F**CKING SHOOK. I was watching Jayz's moonlight and was reading the comments, and never realized this. I am a major Friends fan (it's actually my all time fav. show). This makes me sad. I love LS also but never realized or picked up on this. I am in awe. We stuck in La La Land for real, me included :'(
Niqui H I’m black and grew up in the 90s and I also loved Friends. Still do. One of my all time fav shows along with Breaking Bad. Just b/c a person is black doesn’t mean they have to only watch black shows and can’t support TV they deem good. And I also loved Moesha, The Parkers, Fresh Prince, Martin, LS, Family Matters, ect. Also got into Good Times when it had a resurgence in the early 2000s. Friends and LS are both brilliant shows IMO. I wish LS and Martin both lasted longer but with Martin I get why. Ratings were somewhat down and even more detrimental was Martin clearly being on something (seriously look at him in season 1-3) compared to the last season. and the whole thing with Tisha. I get that Friends was a white cast but I’m not gonna just overlook the brilliance of the show b/c they’re white. Same goes for the likes of Boy Meets World, another 90s mostly white show
Niqui H nigga just cuz they ain’t have black characters doesn’t mean it was a bad show, it’s one of my fav show, so is living single, don’t let hate blind the truth n I am not bias n I’m black but both shows r classics
Digital☆Megami it depends. There’s a reason why friends is still popular now. If living singles wasn’t an all black cast, would you have watched it? You are judging with your racial bias.
415alkeez I guess it depends on the person. I just felt that living single was made to be seen by only black people. Friends was universal that’s why it was and still is popular. I’m Asian. And I don’t really care about the race thing but I just really adored friends more.
415alkeez well. That’s what I got. There were holes and storyline in living single that only black people could get. While friends storyline was for the public. That’s just my two cents. I tried watching living single because someone commented that it was better. Well my conclusion is that it’s not for me. Maybe that’s why friends was such a hit even today. Because their target audience is for everybody.
Funny how she even be real about how she feel about them ripping her shit off and making friends because the industry can do her like they doing Monique
A group of Friends hanging out in New York isn't exactly a high concept. When Friends began, it was derided as a Seinfeld rip-off. But it was so popular and different enough that critics stopped saying that after the first season.
Friends and Seinfeld are so different though. Everything from the characters, the the dynamics between characters, to the episode plots of Friends were direct copies of Living Single. Remember the episode of friends where the girls were throwing a party but the radiator was broken so they threw a luau themed party instead? They did that in Living Single season 1 episode 20. The Phoebe character is EXACTLY like Sinclair James from living single. Chandler and Ross grew up together, Kyle and Overton grew up together. Rachel and Monica were childhood friends turned roommates, Khadijah and Regine grew up together. You should watch season 1 of Living Single, and watch season 1 of friends and I bet you’ll find more similarities than differences
@@MeganuushFromHighSchool I said that Friends and Seinfeld are very different. But the perception at the time was the NBC saw the success of Seinfeld and put a bunch of shows on the air about single people in New York instead of family or workplace sitcoms. That is one of the things that made Seinfeld original, and it predated Living Single. NBC created The Single Guy and Boston Common, etc. off the success of Seinfeld and Friends. I watched Living Single and Friends. Neither of which are special. Yes, there are some similarities, but Phoebe and Sinclair are not EXACTLY alike. Does Sinclair sing nonsense songs in a coffee shop? Yes, they are both kind of flighty, loveble airheads, but that was a sitcom trope long before those shows. It is a show business cliche that that there are only above five or so good ideas and a few character tropes. The producers of Friends based the show on their experience when they were in their 20s in New York. I have no reason to not believe them. They said they didn't see Living Single. I have no reason to not believe them.
@@brewer921 Sorry, buddy, but you're in denial. "Friends" is undoubtedly a rip-off of "Living Single." Your attempt at the specific examples cited is weak. Entire storylines were repeated, and character traits were almost 1 to 1. The "differences" were obviously done to not make it so obvious, but they didn't change that much because "Living Single" was advertised as a black show, so not many whites were going to watch it, whereas "Friends" was given the red carpet treatment and aired worldwide. The only reason the makers of "Friends" didn't get sued is because both "Living Single" and "Friends" were produced by Warner Brothers TV. That meant that Warner Brothers owned the concept of "Living Single" and could do whatever they wanted with it. That's how "Friends" got away with open theft.
@@NomadFlow I'm not your buddy. I'm tired of people posting about this. My last post about it is from two years ago. I'm not in denial because I don't care. I don't like Friends or Living Single.
So everybody's just gonna ignore Singles? You know, the movie that came out in 92, the one Warner tried so hard to transform it into a tv series, till the point of moving forward with the idea even after the director of the original project declined it, leading him to sue the company for using the name of his film without consent, forcing them to change it to Friends
I would actually go a bit further. Friends was a straight-up ripoff of Living Single. Some of the characters even have the same damned job (Synclair and Joey)! I never put two and two together until now.
I love watching both living single and friends, even though friends lasted a long time than living single. Its really no secret that friends is the white version of living single.
Cameron Crowes "Singles" from 1992 is the inspiration for Friends. Even down to the fountain in the courtyard and the title & font style. Bridget Fonda is Rachael, Matt Dillon is Joey, Jim True is Chandler, Kyra Sedgwick is Monica, Sheila Kelley is Phoebe and Campbell Scott is Ross. The similarities are much too uncanny for this to be a coincidence. I think aesthetically "Living Single" and "Friends" have a similar look and colour palette but considering they are both filmed and produced by NBC at the same time thats not very surprising however other than that I highly doubt there is anything in "Living Single" that can be uniquely traced back directly to "Friends" if anything, the concept for "Living Single", of two single guys who are long time friends living close to a group of single girls that they are friends/romantic with probably came form "Singles" the movie since it precedes both "Friends" and "Living Single" . "Friends" was pitched in November 1993 as "Insomnia Cafe" and "Living Single" aired in the last week of August 1993 so the chances that the creators saw one episode of "Living Single" on August 22nd and then spent 3 months creating a seven page treatment based on that is a little dubious and unlikely but possibly I guess. "Singles" also has 6 friends who are single twenty somethings and all share an apartment building and are trying to find their place in society. Campbell Scott as Steve Dunne plays a very "Ross" like character who has a boring job that he loves, in this case he works in the city traffic department and talks to his dates about traffic just as Ross is a palaeontologist working at the Museum of Natural History and loves dinosaurs. Matt Dillon as Cliff Poncier plays a Joey like character but instead of acting he is trying to break into the music scene in a band. Bridget Fonda as Janet Livermore reflects Rachael, who was in a relationship with Steve (Ross) and works at the cafe but pines to be more. Sheila Kelley who plays Debbie Hunt is a free spirit, quirky, hippie type like Phoebe and the list goes on. Anywho just watch "Singles" already.
In the earlier season of friends, b/c then phoebe became a little monster. I love both show btw and all characters but when I realized friends had copied LS, it made me really sad and for a while I couldn't enjoy friends anymore but... I'm over it.
IIRC even some the characters were similar. -They had both had a ditzy chick. -A sarcastic jerk. -A dumb masculine character (one was a handyman the other was a handsome actor)
Also even though Friends was funny it was problematic at times- Chandler was my favourite but that one episode when Monica got braids because the humidity puffed out her hair and he was virtually disgusted and kept begging her to take them out like he was embarrassed to be seen with her saying things like “I can see your scalp!” being like 8 and watching that even then I was like WTF since when is Chandler a racist!? I think the writers were really poor on that topic and just goes to show how culturally insensitive they could be like not having people of colour on their show wasn’t bad enough they had to randomly incorporate a story line that mocked our traditional hairstyles and culture too...right.
@@michelleatwt You don’t see my point because I’m not saying the writers were trying to be racist I said it was culturally insensitive and racist not that that was their intention if black writers were on the show/ cast tht storyline wouldn’t have happened and it was random unnecessary and not funny. Is my point.
I LOVE the puase when he's trying to find the 'correct' word: "Living single was a...." "Copy? No." "Rip-Off? No." "Clone? No." "A JUMPING OFF point...." (ahh)
Glad she finally said that and no she didn’t inspire it, that’s a nice and intelligent way of her saying they stole the entire show idea and they did. Everything about friends is just like Living Single.
Not true. Joey was never meant to be stupid like Overton. That was something the actor brought into the role after several episodes to give his character more dimension and depth instead of just being a womanizer.
Friends was not inspired by Living Single. Just because a bunch of people started saying that a couple years doesn't mean they can wish it into being. It's like saying Die Hard is a Christmas movie just because you want it to be true.

I agree. In my opinion, I always found the show "Friends" quite boring.

I didn't even realise till recently that friends was actually released a year after living single
Loved Loved Loved Living Single, and I still do. That show doesn't go out of style.
They never released Living Single in the UK. Only just finding out about it.

I think cause In brazil or in all latin america they never realesed,is very hard find living single in spanish or portuguese
Wow!
Neither in Croatia but shhh... if I say 99% of people are white they are going to kill me... and cuz no one would watch it
I've never heard of living single (live in England) so I searched it on YT and watched a clip it's about a minute long of Maxine getting a tattoo, I swear in those 60some seconds I was cracking tf up with laughter😭😭😭 That scene alone sold me the show, I'm about to start season 1 episode 1🥳 it's a shame I'm only hearing of LS in 2020🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ smh
Max was awesome on that show!
Please do 💪🏿 you can't deny the energy and max was my absolute favorite! But everyone was incredible😍
Max was hilarious in that scene.. the way she folded out of the chair onto the floor😂😂
she's being very diplomatic and classy as Queen always is.
Kratos' voice from God of War?
Living single one of my all-time favorite shows. It inspired a lot of friend's like sitcoms.
“I had heard a rumor” LOL James it’s not a rumor they stole from living single
I remember when living single was one of the new shows coming out and critics were giving reviews on the premise of each show. I recall that living single was getting negative to luke warm reviews. The consensus was it wouldn't last past 1 season. I remember one critic specifically saying something to the effect of "who would want to watch a show about 4 single women", that it didn't sound the least bit entertaining, and the show didn't have a chance in hell of being successfully. As a fan of the show (for most of its duration), I never forgot that.

@@radrixx0018 It is... Friends is lackluster.
Yep same here. Tho Friends was never my favorite show, I got really upset to hear about Living Single and how Friends ripped it off without ever giving any credit.
then I hope Living Single is your favorite show now
Definitely bring back "Living Single" - was a Brilliant show!!!
I’d definitely kill for a short revival. 6-8 episodes, where they all are now.
living single inspired friends, sex and the city and girlfriends to be honest.
Victor Qunnuell Vaughns Jr I doubt it since with the exception of Friends the rest are just character tribes which were the same as Golden girls and Designing women which predates Living single. You can pick out the smart career one, vain trampy one, sarcastic one and naive one in those shows as well
And Half & Half
well sex and the city is based on a column so..........no. and girlfriends was inspired by sex and the city "i want to make a black version of this" fraiser said so (he was like an exec producer or something). and you left out noah's ark, the gay black sex and the city
serenityq26 I agree
And every other show that exists or existed right?
Yet, ppl still don't understand why culture appropriation is an issue. Not giving credit and claiming something as your own.
Not only is it appropriation, it's PLAIGIRISM!
Stop speaking our language and technology you culture vulture. You're cultural appropriating white people by using the internet itself.
@@OnettBoyXD But are they claiming the internet as their own? Changing the name of it and saying it was created by black/asian/indigenous people? no. And white people aren't the only ones to help in the creation of the internet. Also speaking a language in itself is not indicative of cultural appropriation. I get the feeling someone needs to look up a definition or two....
It’s also IP theft. Look at how these whites go on about China and IP theft, yet do the exact same thing. Dirty hypocrites.
It looks like Queen didn’t feel comfortable talking about Living Single. Very diplomatic, respected lady.
Friends even mimicked the dancing intro from Living Single; it’s wild
But Warren Littlefield was naive by booming like that.
The chair did though.
I'd been thinking about that too. I really think one of the things that makes Friends so special and elevates it is the set design.
@@caras4766 Yeah...they really brought you into the livingroom as a lived experience instead of just making you an omniscient voyer.
It was someplace you, yourself, wanted to live in and hang out week to week.
@@Producerukoh 100% I always think of Friends less as a TV show and more as a place I can visit - of course, that’s partly because it’s just so familiar to me as a show I grew up with since childhood, but I do think it’s also the set and the way it’s filmed.

Queen Latifah is showing professionalism she know what went down.

Erika does not need one of those ridiculous Emmys. Those awards are in most of the cases to make talentless artists look talented.

I remember Living Single from when I was a little kid and I remember my older (teen and young adult) relatives loved it.
I LOVE Living Single
I think 'Friends' is a mashup of 'Living Single' for the apartment and 'Cheers' for the bar/coffee shop
Lol you can tell Queen was not interested in stirring up any type of drama, quickly changed the conversation back to the photo.
Back in the 90's, I read a Drew Carey interview and he said the same dam thing. Drew Carey!!! Let that sink in folks.
I AM F**CKING SHOOK. I was watching Jayz's moonlight and was reading the comments, and never realized this. I am a major Friends fan (it's actually my all time fav. show). This makes me sad.

A Follower of JYP Nation “Living Single was made to be seen by black people?” Umm No lol I think Full House was better then Friends lol
I also wish they would put out the rest of the seasons on dvd. They only have season 1😣!

She dodged the question like... a true queen.
"Living Single" would've made for a strong lead-out show for NBC to air after Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
I loved Living Single and always thought that about Friends...
@@brewer921i watch both shows, but nobody would knows how Warren Littlefield was not manufacturing idea

Living single was sex in the city for a major TV network... Living Single came 1st... Great show!!
Queen's hair was slayed out I like both shows Friends and Living Single, they where both funny to me.
I would actually go a bit further. Friends was a straight-up ripoff of Living Single. Some of the characters even have the same damned job (Synclair and Joey)! I never put two and two together until now.
I didn't put two and two together until Jay Z's video for Moonlight
Loved them both! I literally watched both of these shows from start to finish and loved them the same.
I loved both shows... kudos to both series.
I love watching both living single and friends, even though friends lasted a long time than living single. Its really no secret that friends is the white version of living single.
Queen Latifah was being very polite.

Loved Friends but, Living Single was a hit in my book!!! Kudos to these great people for making us laugh!
I see your point but I don't think that's what they were going for.
Yeah that was messed up they did that😔
@@michelleatwt You don’t see my point because I’m not saying the writers were trying to be racist I said it was culturally insensitive and racist not that that was their intention if black writers were on the show/ cast tht storyline wouldn’t have happened and it was random unnecessary and not funny.
