Lesbian Bride Surprise on Living Single

  • Before anyone had ever even heard of the show Friends, the Fox sitcom Living Single was all about a group of friends living together in a huge apartment in New York. It featured Queen Latifah, a lot of very '90s fashion choices, and on one episode, a surprise lesbian wedding. In contrast to same-sex-marriage episodes on other shows, Living Single's characters fully embrace their queer friends -- a shift that reflects something much bigger happening in American culture at the time.

I might need to check out Living Single cause I love Friends and a lot of the clips Matt showed made Living Single look pretty funny. I hope it's as character driven as Friends is because that's honestly what I loved about Friends. The characters were always the most important part of the show and even though it was primarily a comedy the main characters all experienced some serious situations no matter how silly or goofy they seemed on the surface. Although Phoebe might seem at first glance just to be an eccentric and flaky oddball there's a recurring arc throughout the series of her trying to find her long lost father and eventually reconnecting with her birth mother.

Before I knew I was not straight, about 16, my closest friend came out as gay and I was really upset because he came out to literally everyone before me. Even my sister's freinds knew a year before me, I was literally the last person.
I later realised that (besides some dumb homophobic shit I had said to him when I was 12) he told everyone else before me because, out of all the people that could of rejected him, he knew he wouldn't be able to cope if I rejected him. I was blown away at how quickly things took. At this point I had sat in the audience of a lot of sitcoms and Living Single would always finish in like 1 1/2-2hrs when most would last up to 3 1/2 hours. The cast rarely messed up their lines. I remember watching Living Single religiously when I was younger. I loved that show and this episode was one of my favorites. It was a good conversation on both externalize and internalized homophobia and how to navigate that in your day to day relationships. At the time I agreed with both sides. I understand why she didn't come out to her friend and I understood why her friend felt so hurt that she didn't. People still deal with such situations even today. The fear of what others might think or might say when they find out that someone they are close to is LGBT+ is very real for those in the community. And, its understandable to be reluctant to come out because of that fear. It is my hope that as the community becomes more and more accepted we will be able to finally extinguish that fear for good and truly become a safe space everywhere.

Yeah but if you thought you were close friends you would feel some type of way to know that someone who you felt so close to and thought you knew so much about was hiding this part of them from you.
Not only did they not let you know about something so important to them but also what does it say about how they view you, that they don't trust you to even try to not homophobic.
It's less about them being homophobic and more about them being upset that the possibility of homophobia kept them from being close with their friend.

    • @midnite4ever
      @midnite4ever 4 года назад +34

I don’t think it’s about entitlement or lack of empathy. It’s about honesty. I was in this situation where a friend of mine came out almost a year after we met. And I was angry, for the same reason Max stated. She was my friend. And I wasted all this time discussing guys with her and trying to get her to go on double dates with me. I got over it, but I felt like part of our friendship was hollow because she kept a part of herself away from me. I missed the opportunity for her to tell me about her REAL crushes instead of the ones she made up. And it hurt that she really thought I would turn on her.

@@midnite4ever being lesbian, I never thought of it in this way that you explained. Before I came out, I was so used to hearing about gays not being accepted by others or that we're going to hell, that I just didn't think I would ever be accepted or loved. So I jus played a role until I was able to be honest with myself. I did have people upset with me but it's hard to own up to the truth when you hear people make comments about it before u come out. T First...Yay for you accepting your truth. I hesitate to say that I understand, because I’ve never had to grapple with the idea of “coming out” to anyone about something so life changing. So, I’ll just say I can see how that could be something agonizing and not easy to do. Especially in your situation where it doesn’t seem as if the people around you were the most accepting. I was just upset with my friend because we met at work...in an adult book store...and she saw me interact with EVERYONE and have a BALL talking to people. So, for me, it hurt that she thought I wouldn’t accept her. But, like I said, I got over it and we moved on. I just hate that we wasted some of our time.

I feel the emotional breakthroughs in this episode of "Living Single" outdo any actual wedding ceremony scene, especially if they might pan away from any kiss (like in "Roseanne"). The coming out, the re-evaluation of the friendship, the support, the reconciliation scenes are more important, imo, than one "standing in front of a minister" scene. Talking about being gay and the processes of coming out are important. As awkward as the "Sister of the Bride" episode is, I value the discussion. We all know what a wedding looks like but sometimes it's good seeing how a coming out discussion progresses.

Loved this show.. It was funny, all the actors were great.. Great casting... Their lines were delivered with sharp perfect timing. The New York apartment was way cool, even though it was just a set... They touched on some great subjects too..

Cool side note - Erika Alexander- who played Max had acted alongside the actress who played her college friend years before on the Cosby Show .
That was cool to see .

I never even knew this episode existed! Probably because I was a kid back then and my Jehovah’s Witness mom wouldn’t watch an episode like that. I want to see it. I grew up to become a straight ally and I absolutely love your channel, especially videos like this!

just dropping in to say that i love your videos so much! you put so much effort into ALL your projects and work, and i love that your videos give me the opportunity to learn about my community in an entertaining and digestible way (which is really important for me, my adhd makes it so difficult for me to focus on ANYTHING). i'm planning on buying defining marriage soon, and i'm so excited to read it! so much love for you, and i hope everything in your life is going well.

Growing up in the 90's, I almost forget how seismic the shift was... although even in 99 and 00 when I came out it still felt like we were in the sidekick/novelty phase that I think is best represented by the phrase "my gays."

What's also mind bending is that Courtney Cox was ON Murder She Wrote in 1986. She was also on Love Boat that year. I know! Weird time warp!

This episode reminded me of the first time a friend came out to me. She was my best friend in high school and she'd gone off to college far away while I stayed around and got knocked up. She came to visit me when the baby was born and we re-connected and she told me she was gay and I was like "Okay, cool!" But then she proceeded to tell me that her first lover was one of the teachers at our school and that their affair began when my friend was 15. I was freaked out--understandably, I thought, but I kept it to myself. (This was about 1988) I seriously had no issues with her being gay--but the predator teacher was concerning to me despite my friend assuring me it was "consensual."
We fell out of touch again as she went off to grad school and big cities and stuff, but reconnected about 10 years ago--so we're 45. My friend is so fucked up I can't believe it. She is so full of self-loathing that she joined the Catholic Church hard core--I mean, going to mass every day, trying to become part of the laity leadership, pious all day long, etc. So I asked her how she reconciled this with being gay and she said that only "gay acts" were sinful. So I said, "Well, if it makes you happy!" But I'm lying, because she clearly is NOT happy. I kept in touch with her for a few months but her hatred for herself was so toxic I eventually had to pull back.

Wat a great show u got here ! 👍🏽 love learning about the gay/lesbian culture. Its so crazy cause my older sister came out around this time mid 90’s and i think because it was on tv so much my family didn’t really care or have any real reaction, it was just like ok so who r u dating.? Which was surprising since my family is from Haiti thought my parents would have more to say. But i definitely think it’s because they started hearing about it more
