  • Living Single, created by Yvette Lee Bowser, premiered on FOX in 1993 and featured an all-Black cast of funny, inspirational and upwardly mobile friends sharing laughs, love, and a Brooklyn brownstone. The immediate, and unexpected hit, starred Queen Latifah, Kim Coles, Erika Alexander, T.C. Carson, John Henton and Kim Fields.

It wasn’t just the blueprint for Friends, it was also the blueprint for Sex and the City, if not more so . Khadijah was a writer and so was Carrie. Max was a headstrong independent attorney, so was Miranda. Regine was fashionable, had a trendy career, and was always with a new man, so was Samantha. Synclaire was the hopeless romantic, ditzy one, and so was Charlotte. Living Single was also a show about four single females living in New York City, specifically Brooklyn. While Sex and the City was set in Manhattan. They even copied episodes from Living Single. Remember Season 1 episode 18, with the loud elderly couple getting busy? Well, Sex and the City copied that episode with its version Season 2 episode 14, when Samantha got too excited by her loud neighbors, only to find out that they were old. Sound familiar??? I’m surprised no one else caught on and wonder why they keeping only talking about Friends. Clearly, Sex and the City copied Living Single and need to give them sistas their flowers as well!

All living single did was change the number of girlfriends from two to four and of course there ethnicity.

It was nice seeing beautiful talented black women be confident, funny and have a positive representation all around cast that many could relate to. But the thing with Living Single it ran only five seasons and Friends ran for 10 seasons. Also the cast of LS didn't make as much money of got the major awards unlike Friends did. What I'm saying that Living Single didn't the recognition like Friends did. They didn't have blockbuster ratings, the major awards like the Emmys, Golden Globe or People's Choice Awards they were only nominated for NAACP image awards which isn't bad but that's ok. And they weren't paid a million dollars or 250,000 dollars per episode unlike Friends did.

Never ceases to amaze me how when a show has a predominately POC cast, it's considered only for that race of audience. But the minute a show has a predominantly white cast, it's considered for all audiences, and is said to have a "broader reach". Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that they're intending to not only mainly cater to white audiences, but also to promote white supremacy, and cultural assimilation to whiteness; to endorse the mindset that even if you are not white, you should be striving and aspiring to be as close to it as possible. They act allergic to diversity because diversity doesn't promote white supremacy, and for them, white audiences and culture are the main ones that matter.

Living Single was one of the BEST shows of the 90s PERIOT!! I was obsessed with the reruns as a kid. Looking back, it's so raunchy how Fox built their success off the backs of black shows like living single, Martin, New York undercover, etc. And then they just dropped them like they never did anything for them. That made me mad how they did T.C Carson (Kyle) because he spoke up for I'm sure things that should have been spoken up for. And I hated the way they ended living single because it wasn't even given a full season. It ended in January of 1998 with a sort of a dry ending that was disappointing. Nevertheless, Living Single was the muse that Friends built off of.

I'm neither black nor white, in case that's relevant. I'm Alaska Native and Filipino, and for me, I didn't want to sit through another show about a group of 20-somethings living together and operating in the 'big bad city'.

Something I didn't know until a few days ago is that the show *Half & Half* did an episode where Kyle Barker and Maxine Shaw With Their Daughter (!!!) show up. I don't know what season it was, but Essence Atkins' TV mother was in a play and was jealous of Kyle being in the play as well. And Essence wanted to work for Maxine since she was a high powered lawyer. It was so surreal seeing their story continue in a way. I miss those characters and am mentally standing in line to buy a ticket to any movie they make.
