One of the most unique and amazing vocalists in modern music. A force of nature.
Classic Family....I discovered this great band In My Own Time..... 🎶🙌✨️🙌🎵
Nice one!
Can't imagine any band nowadays producing something as creative and awesome as this.
Great example of the magnificent imaginative music we all had in the 70's .
As visceral and unsettling now as the day I came home from school and watched this on the telly. Verily a singular waxing and a unique band.
Saxophone played on a flute, yeah man, love it !
A brilliant band and a tremendous number especially really live......but this toppop ...kill anything!
Glad to see so many loved This band as much as I did back in those days...
Such a great song.Old Chappo used to berserk with tambourines and mic stands when they did it live according to my old fossil mate a veteran of many muddy festivals including IoW.
A voice like an ancient spirit animal
I saw Family play this live at the National Jazz & Blues Festival at Plumpton in 1969. Their whole set was amazing!
Family. Great Band !!!!
Wow!. Thus song is very good🙏❤️🙏
Wow !!!
Still hooked on family even now ! Unforgettable band of a stature that would be 2 difficult 2 reach in these times !
From a recent book about Toppop: this is one of the first videos filmed at the Toppop studio (Bellevue) in Amsterdam, shown on the first episode of Toppop. It clearly shows the simple setup and looked somewhat amateuristic. The band had apparently forgotten that the solo on the single was played on tenor sax instead of on flute.
Same background as the Black Sabbath 'Paranoid' video !
This was the first broadcasting of toppop ever.
This looks like a later incarnation of Family with Poly Palmer and John Weider miming to Jim King and Ric Grech's parts on the studio single. Jim King (saxaphone) and Ric Gretch (bass/cello/violin) had left the band - Jim sacked, I believe, for over-indulgence in pharmacuticals, whilst Grech had unforgivably walked out as their US tour opened to join Blind Faith. So with multi-instrumentalist Poly Palmer (on flute here) and basist/violinist John Weider in the band the live performances were heavier and more raucous iirc. Pity the BBC didn't have them record their own version to mime to. Great signature song from Leicester's finest. Great vocalist in Roger Chapman. Fabulous live band.
Wow, the flute sounds like a sax! Amazing..
The best voice in rock history - IMHO
Una band fantastica, perché questa cioffega, non si pensava alla pensione
Was transfixed when this came out, majority of youngsters didn't get what the lyrics were about.
Brilliant Anyway...check out the Beatclub live version, or the Isle of Wight if you really wanna see them Shred it up. Beautiful poetic song, all of life unfurled in minutes. 🎼🎭🎶🎻🎶🎷🎶🎤🎶🥁🎶🎯
Concrete plywood.
yes its correct. it was on 22-9-1970. its wroten in a book with all broadcast from toppop history.
Great song, great band - the badly synced playback spoils it though - best shut your eyes and enjoy
That flute sure sounds a lot like a saxophone! 😂😂😂
That was reigned in
Check out Chappo with Mike Oldfield on Shadow on The Wall
Sine when sounds a fluid, like a saxophone? Dutch tv ?
Unique Chappo and Family
this is playback - not live; the flute is not a saxo
Anyone would know that TOTP's is ALL Playback. WHY did they NOT put WHO is in the Band? Ric had left to join/form "Blind Faith", which is what it WAS, VERY short-lived. Also founder member Jim [King] NOT in this video!
Broadcast date: 26-9-1970 is not correct.
Try Tuesday 22nd September 1970.
Many date broadcast errors on this Toppop website.
The sax player had left the band by this broadcast
No audience?
Please check the stereo single version with the wah-wah guitar in the intro. My favourite version.

Is that a flute or a 🎷?😂😂😂😂😂
shame its all mimed
Jammer playback
Toppop was altijd 100% playback.
