I always find these episodes so relevant, as if I was having a conversation with someone who really understands where I come from, my history, my wants/needs, my deepest impulses to create beauty in whatever way I can. One reason I identified in myself long ago, why I don't achieve anywhere near as much craft as my inspiration would lead me to, is a belief that I'm not really an artist deep down, I'm a scientist. Never mind that I've long known of other scientists who were also artists, Borodin and da Vinci among them. I can't compare to them in either capacity! As if comparisons were ever useful! Yet I do even while consciously aware of how that stymies my own attempts to do real work, adds to the pressures to apply myself to something "more useful" in our world. I know I'm nowhere near alone in this crisis of self-confidence, how hard it is to give myself permission to do this, amongst all the other duties I have as a woman and mother/sister/daughter, and tenant in a private rental. I think as women, we have not just the barriers put against us historically, but also those we have as part of our natural gender-based impulses to good for all those others around us before we do good for ourselves. The gender-based societies we live in in the west are very hard to dissect from the nature of our own being in a wider, deeper sense.
Thank you Anita. You are so right, there is so much unpicking to do with things that we have assumed to be immutable but actually turn out to be simply a societal assumption, kept going for convenience of a particular group. J x

Thank you. That sounds like an amazing project - do you restore them one at a time or is it something you have several of and work on them a bit and then swap over? I’m assuming gearings are so on are very different to modern bikes.

I needed to hear this as I fail to make time to do things that I would take pleasure from. It's not that I can't do them but that I don't make time as there always seems to be a more pressing job to do. I made a list of jobs / leisure activities that I wanted to achieve and whilst I am making some progress with the jobs, the leisure activities end up being second and that really needs to change. You sound to be having a wonderful time.
Thanks Elizabeth. I think it’s so easy to do that - put ourselves at the bottom of the list. It’s why I’m now so keen on putting leisure things in my wall calendar even when it looks daft - it’s the only way to guarantee I’ll actually get to do them. X

I thought your short video was very important. I came to the same conclusion late last year, after a difficult six months of caregiving, and loosing both our moms that life is such a precious gift. I felt we should respect that and be more international in living that life. So I am trying to implement it in my life. It is true that when you do sent your time and energy intentionally, at the end of a day, you feel more satisfied - and of course that will give one better sleep, so th ask you for reinforcing that truth for me,
