    I've always had a receding hairline since my teenage years, and my father and all my cousins on my fathers side have hair loss. So it was inevitable I would also be exposed to this. When I was 23 my cousin pointed out that my crown was thinning. I took a picture of it and saw this was true. This was the final straw for me. I did my due diligence watching the Hair Loss show and Haircafe and I was rid of the Finasteride fear mongering. I then two months later started 1mg every other day of Finasteride. I am happy that now at almost 26 my hair is pretty much no different, maybe even slightly improved. Im so glad i caught it early.

    Anyone here who's just starting to bald, you have no idea how lucky you are to be here and have Kevin on your side! I'm turning 40 next year and got a prescription for Finasteride at 26, but of course I got swayed to tried natural treatments, there goes another 2-3 years of my life and my hair only got way worse, then I did only Minoxidil because of the fear mongering, and only in my 30s started Finasteride. I did also try RU/Dut at some point but that's another story. I wish I had someone like Kevin to tell me to take my finasteride when I just started balding and MOVE ON WITH MY LIFE. If there comes a point where Fin isn't enough anymore then sure get back on the drawing board.
    I only have a major gripe with Minoxidil, after a decade on it, I'm sick of applying it daily. Wish I wouldn't have to worry about minoxidil first drying and not touching my hair and then face etc..
    I'll probably need 2 hair transplants to have a some what reasonable hair for my age.

    Kevin I need some encouraging words from you. I finally gathered the courage to go ask a dermatologist here in Germany to prescribe Fin, but he said I have to warn you about the sexual side effects, although they're rare, but some people also experience PFS.
    I mean why did he even mentioned PFS, he did say it was rare twice, but still, he could've left at sexual sides. This was a nasty blow, it literally took me 1 year to even gather enough courage to go there.
    You're a here, I'm re-going over all of your videos about sides and PFS!!

    • @volos_olympus
      @volos_olympus 8 месяцев назад

      Doctors in Germany are very old-fashioned and uneducated. Try using an online service like doktoronline instead as those will prescribe anything given you pass the idiot test when ordering. PFS is not a real condition because as Kevin has indicated in this video, finasteride does not last in your tissues for more than a few weeks. ED occurs "naturally" in men the older they get and many like to blame their issues on finasteride or other drugs such as ssris. But the fact is, no clinical trial to date has ever shown a single patient who did not resolve side effects upon cessation of finasteride or through continued use.

    The doctor on the Hair Loss Show suggests 1mg, 3 x week as a suitable dose for most people. Another doctor on RUclips said 1mg/daily is necessary for people with transplants but allows variable dosing for others.
    I think it ultimately depends on the individual. I was able to drop my dosage from 1 mg daily to 4 mg a week without any loss of efficacy. However someone with more severe hair loss may need to stick to the standard 1 mg daily dose.

He claims it to be safer then taking Finasteride every day and should be as or maybe more effective...🧐 Anyways, After many years 1mg fin/day, I've switched to 1x 0,5mg Dutasteride a week and 6x 0,5 Finasteride a week and that seems to work very good! Almost a year on this regimen, at almost 43yo. 😊 PS: Thanks kevin, for being a hair-loss warrior and saving as many guys as you can from a dreadful hairless life !! 👍👍👍

  • @drwayne_carter9115
    @drwayne_carter9115 8 месяцев назад +1

    There's the drug itself and there's the drug's EFFECTS. The half life of finasteride itself in your serum is 6-8hrs, but the half life of finasteride's effects is 30 days. That is a catastrophic difference. Similar to an antibiotic. An antibiotic can pass through your gut in hours or days, but the effects it leaves on your microbiome can last for weeks or months.

    • @haircafekevin
      @haircafekevin  8 месяцев назад +2

      It's not catastrophic. And the biochemical data I presented suggests the biological effect lasts more like 2 weeks than 30 days. The fact that there is a prolonged effect just means low doses and intermittent dosing can be used. The 5AR blockade is reversible, so it all goes away if you need to stop the drug, but it does take about 2 weeks for that to happen despite the short half-life.

    Hey Kevin, I've watched your videos for years now (from back in the days when you did vegan videos as well, which influenced me to go plant based : -) ). Thank you for all the effort you put in.
    Wanted to request for you to go a bit deeper into the allegations that dutasteride, through its inhibition of the type 1 5ar enzyme (which as you said is the predominent one in the brain), impacts the production of certain neurosteroids, such as allopregnanolone.
    I'd love some more attention for dutasteride, as I am one of those individuals who has sadly still been receding while taking 1,25 mg of finasteride daily.
    Would be nice to get a clearer picture of if, and if so to which extend, this impacts certain apsects such as mood, memory, anxiety etc.
    Thanks in advance and I hope you had pleasant holidays, best wishes
    PS: Could you remember me why you stopped taking dut? I remember you mentioning this a long while ago, but I forgot.

    • @haircafekevin
      @haircafekevin  8 месяцев назад +3

      It might be worth doing a whole video on this, but I'll just summarize the reasoning that I've presented in some of my videos. First, there is debate whether dutasteride crosses the blood-brain barrier. It is a larger molecule than finasteride. Some researcher say it does, some say it doesn't. Maybe it does, but poorly. That would limit its type 1 effect on brain neurosteroids.
      Second, 0.5 mg of dutasteride didn't even affect peripheral neurosteroid levels in this study, pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26272051/ . However 2.5 mg did have an effect. Keep in mind though that even though dutasteride is 100 times stronger at blocking the type 1 5ar enzyme, it is still is a weaker blockade than its blockade of the type 2 5ar enzyme. So it takes a lot of dut to have an effect on the type 1 isoenzyme. Also, peripheral neurosteroids don't correlate with brain neurosteroids.
      Finally, depression hasn't even been added to the package insert as a side effect for dutasteride, even though it was for finasteride (inappropriatedly), because despite its type 1 5ar blocking effects, there's no evidence for neuro sides occurring because of dut. If the type 1 blocking effect was affecting brain neurosteroids, you'd think there would be a lot of complaints of neuro sides.
      The reasons I stopped taking dut are because fin was working well enough and I didn't notice any additional improvements with dut. I also didn't like how dutsteride was a soft gel, being a vegan.

Thanks again I trust you 100%.

      In men, after adolescence, testosterone are high enough to maintain beard hair. In women, testosterone levels are low, and increased DHT or testosterone will increase body hair, so cutting down the DHT level helps. Lowering testosterone would have helped too.

      Interesting, but the skin is 5ar1 not 5ar2 so finasteride probably won’t stop beard hair growth.
      It boggles the mind why nature decided to make the Androgen receptors of the beard react well with dht but the scalp ones react poorly.

    3 years on finasteride 2 days ago. I think I have missed only one day in this time. It still feels like I shed weak hairs this far into treatment.

      but it worked for you?

    • @johanjonasson4188

      @@edigas_1 Yes it definitely works. But what I meant was that I still shed those weak hairs that has been affected by androgenic alopecia and I think that means that I still haven't reached the full effect of the medicine. Because I talked to someone on reddit that got all his hair back past the 3 year mark. Before those 3 years his hair looked bad and then it regrew quite fast at the 3 year mark. I hope that that is the case for me as well and it feels like it is. So there is never a reason to to think that you have reached the full effect at only 1 year of treatment. I'm also on Dutasteride and in may I have reached 3 years on that as well.

    Hey Kevin, greetings from Germany! Today I found your channel and nearly every video sounds super interesting to me. Really like to positivity towards Finasteride. I'am 22 years old and I love my natural light blond hair a lot. I got into surfing last year and my hair really fits in with that. Of course I want to keep my hair as long as possible. Taking a look on my dad (he is half bald) concerned me about my future hair. Currently, I don't think I have severe hair loss, but I can feel a difference between the DHT-sensitive part of my head (thinner hair) and the non-sensitive part. My plan is to take Finasteride more as an preventative measure (+ to thicken my hair). Therefore, I plan to start with 4 x 0.25mg per week (taken on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday). Do you think that's enough for beeing an preventive measure? With increasing age I would then switch to 0.25mg every singe day etc.

    Thanks Kevin. You're the reason I started taking finasteride one year ago, but I'm now switching to Dutasteride due to poor results/aggressive thinning. I think you have seen the research showing that Dutasteride was more effective than Finasteride at blocking DHT in the follicle, and 2.5mg worked even better than 0.5mg. What do you thik about that? It sounds like taking more Dutasteride is the way to go.

    The major drawback in the studies you cited is that they don't measure scalp DHT which is the only important thing. Scalp and serum DHT levels are not linearly connected. 0.5 mg and 2.5 mg of dut suppress the same amount of serum dht but very different amount in the scalp. I guess the same apply for the frequency.I personally take 10mg of dut every 2-3 weeks for the last year and it works just fine. I've heard that 5ar receptors renew every month or so so 2 weeks should be optimal.

      Since the drugs accumulate in tissues like the scalp, and since the 5AR blocking effect is prolonged throughout the body, I think we can assume the scalp DHT suppression lasts a long time too. Just not 2 months! I think it's possible every 2 week dosing might work, but no one has bothered to study it.

    Awesome vid Kevin! Quick question: I have been on finasteride for about a year and two months. I experienced an intense shed in the beginning and then my hair came back stronger than before. However, in the past couple of months I feel as if my hair loss may have progressed and am also shedding much more than I have for the last year. Is this the seasonal shed people talk about? I may also be noticing more shedding as I have let my hair grow longer so it may be more noticeable than shorter hair shedding. Thanks!

    • @haircafekevin
      @haircafekevin  8 месяцев назад +3

      It's probably a seasonal shed. I'd give it more time to resolve, maybe another couple months before I'd consider doing anything different. If it looks like you are really losing ground you could consider adding dutasteride 0.5 mg once or twice a week to your regimen, but like I said, I'd hold off for now.
