  • I am comparing 2 really nice Martin guitars! The Woodstock 50 year Commemorative Dreadnaught (made in Mexico) against a gorgeous Martin D-35 Dreadnaught made of all solid woods here in the USA. Do you here the difference

    I only hear about a $3K difference and even the dog seemed to agree with me 😂. Huge difference, obviously, but that doesn’t make the Mexican made a bad boy at all. Great video, Ms Cindy 👍🏻

    Of course the D35 with superior material and workmanship will shine. More depth, clarity and sustain , for sure. It will also age and get better with time
    HPL is more " boxy " sounding ( actually can be quite good for recording and will have less of all the range and volume the D35 has
    That being said- it sounds good for what it is and because it uses Martin bracing and construction it sounds pretty good
    Most people , who aren't guitar nerds, will never notice if it is in the hand of a good player( which you are)

    When friends ask me to play rhythm guitar with them on some old-time songs, the last thing they want me to do is to bring a guitar that produces a lot of rich sustain. They want that plain and simple walk up/walk down boom-chuck sound. If I try to get a little flashy, they give me the stink eye! LOL I think guitars are to music as paint brushes are to creating a painting: different brushes are used for different textures and effects. So for old-time music, my inexpensive, made in Mexico, Martin D-Jr all sapele wood guitar is just the thing! Bonus: it's fun to play. 😊

    Nowadays’ technology makes it possible to afford very decent sounding instruments. The Seagulls from Canada are great with solid tops and more advanced engineering. That Mexican Martin sounds great. The D-35 sustains longer and has more bass and is more open but the basic tone is fairly similar. The Mexican sounds a little boxier and toppier. I have an HD-28VAW from Elderly Instruments that sounds heavenly.

    • @MashaT22
      @MashaT22 Месяц назад +2

      That’s exactly how I heard it. The Mexican one is not bad by any means - it’s got a lovely tone and seems to play nicely. But it’s tough to put it up against a d-35. Still, I wouldn’t say it’s worse or anything less - just different is all. I bet they’d sound nice being played together actually!

    It took me almost the entire video before I actually started to hear an appreciable difference. The expensive one did sound different, a more mellow sound but I really had to listen for it. I thought the $500 one was perfectly adequate. Full disclosure: I am a complete newbie in regards to comparing sound among guitars.
    My own conclusion is a beginning or casual player can be well served with an under $1000 guitar. A guitarist who plans to perform professionally can always invest in an expensive instrument later.
    Just an observation: both of those guitars were huge looking. 😮 😊

    I don't really understand why you couldn't play the Woodstock edition in church "3 days of peace , music & love" . Now to the acoustic comparison. The D35 sounds fuller with suberb string definition and harmonic overtones. The Woodstock edition is visually fake. At that time people would paint and decorate their instruments individually (yes, I am that old) but honestly if I really wanted something like this I would buy a used, battered and bruised Takamine or Yamaha and decoraze it myself. It doesn't actually sound too bad but it doesn't blow my head off either, especially at that price.

    • @MashaT22
      @MashaT22 Месяц назад +2

      Clearly you weren’t there or haven’t seen footage from ‘69. 😂😂😂 I wouldn’t say all the behavior there was worthy of church, lol. Some people came for the music and peace part, but so many others came for the love part (and weed/drugs/booze part that weren’t mentioned in the official tagline!) Doesn’t mean everyone there did those sorts of things that a religious crowd wouldn’t appreciate, but still.
      I can see her point about that guitar being better for outside of church. All jokes above aside, some people who are in the 90’s plus crowd in particular that came from a stricter generation might really get offended by seeing that logo in church. I would avoid it too if it were me, as I’m the sort not to potentially want to upset anyone else.
      But I can see where it would bring back memories of where she grew up and why she would enjoy it at home or elsewhere outside of church. Personally, I always wished I was old enough to have gone to the Woodstock revival in ’89 for the 20th anniversary. I was unfortunately still a kid, lol.
