constant stimulation listening to music and podcasts with headphones all the time has made us forget how to be bored, harms creativity, and disconnects us from the reality around us. your hearing plays a significant part in your sense of space (you subconsciously detect the reflections of noises in a room and it gives you a sense of how big or small the space you're in is), so having it blocked is hindering a significant part of what your brain uses to understand and situate yourself within space.
I do think it's a balancing act, though. when i studied abroad in college i made a rule for myself not to use headphones anywhere except for public transit. I felt way more connected with the area i was visiting and with the world around me than i had in years, but i also have a deep appreciation for the time i spent listening to music during my daily commutes, because listening to those albums now immediately takes me back to my experiences abroad. but if you're listening to music constantly, you can't make those connections between music, location, and period of time in your life as meaningfully.

Agreed, but not only music. Its the same with gaming or people being hooked on some easily fed entertainment as you say. The headphones are quite sneaky as they are always on and can always wash over your mind with noise while doing literally anything else. I faced several issues with mental health and one of my own instinctual reactions was to cut down on the massive data feeds, from any media, even if you don't notice it, that data stream is constantly barraging your brain and it sounds very logical that it has long term consequences. Since you actually stop listening to what you hear.
While I get your point, its not something only linked to headphones, and its actually not a new thing, this is the usual trick for people having mental issues in regards to focus, memory, brainfog.

@@CubeParrot1 Agreed, I'm sure it goes way deeper than headphones. Like listening to music even if i just get up for 2 minutes to go put my plate away.
But i think it's different if you're alone, it's not as strange to have the wish to be entertained.
When you're amongst people or in nature, let THAT entertain you.

This is kind of bs. It really depends. Music relaxes me a lot and gives me a lot of joy. Going grocery shopping with some good music in is one of my favorite everyday things to do. I also put on my headphones when I go to the restroom. Many of my good friends don't enjoy the same music as I do, so sometimes I need to recharge my social batteries for a moment. I put on a good song for 5 minutes, submerge myself in the music and come back feeling really relieved and ready for more social interaction. If you reprimanded me for that every time I did it like you say you do with your friend I'd think you were a total douche. Different people can perceive the same thing very differently. So leave people be.

I'm simply explaining my experience. And believe me, i used to think like you aswell. I used to think that it charges me up or makes me feel extra badass when listening to good music out on the streets, but honestly, it kinda messed me up.

Funny that this was suggested to me when I've been telling myself for the last couple weeks that i have a headphone problem and need to stop. I wear an earbud in 1 ear all day. The only time I don't is when I'm in the shower or driving and when I'm doing those things I'm still listening to something with a speaker. It used to help me lock in and work hard, but now I'll spend 20min looking for the perfect thing to listen to and when i finally find something I'm just distracted and doing low quality work. Then when i forget my headphones i feel like i cant even work at all. If i forget them for something like grocery shopping i get super anxious and just want to go home and hide

@@lepus6511 I get you! I used to be just like you.
What helped me was keeping my headphones near me for the first few times. You could even wear them, plugged in but not play anything. So nobody will notice that you don't even listen to something. Then, the next day just put them in your back pocket. Someday you won't even miss them. For me it happened quite quickly, i think within a week of doing it it felt like the most normal thing in the world, which it actually is, to go outside without headphones.
Also: Just try to imagine your favourite song in your head, that helps aswell. Or just hum along.
      You can do it!

I don't completely agree with the video. Something that applies to you doesn't necessarily apply to everyone. But wearing headphones while taking a piss is psychotic haha. Also when I'm biking, everyone on the path is wearing earbuds so they don't hear me say "on your left" when I try to pass, which is annoying.
