Sorry for putting "The" in the title, I'm definitely not the only one.
Starfield is Bethesda's brand new IP coming to us in ONE MONTH. I'm excited for the game for sure.. but very curious and questioning how it will truly be compared to what we've been shown so far. Regardless, there's good and bad things to talk about! I hope you guys enjoy the video!

Everything you feared became reality.
Nothing like Bethesda. Why make a game when you could have an experience and why have fun when you could just have the illusion of fun!
And why create anything when everyone else is already creating, apparently.

This has aged like fine wine.
"You're definitely going to be able to run from the east side of the planet to the west side of the planet."
Yeah... so... about that...
I like how the second gunplay demo looks like it went from a guy who played shooters sometimes to a guy who has played Doom for 200+ hours.
Yeah and anyone I see who's half decent at being good at an FPS runs through this thing like John Wick did DMT and then jumped in an Exo Suit
My fear is that the less u handcraft the world and make it bigger, the more quests u need to fill it. So get ready for those “spacebase is under attack” or cave 1643 that looks like cave 534 with a random item
The way starfield is described is basically 1000 of those mass effect 1 mako rover levels (a few points of interest on a small segment of a planet) and a few hub cities. That sounds so boring to me, and realistically that's the only way this game can be.
@@Orinslayer Yeah, part of what made me love ME2 was that it ditched those for the most part. Yeah exploring a planet is cool, but when every planet is just some flavour text and a glorified dungeon, the luster wears off pretty quick.
@@Orinslayer Commenting just to see how your take will age, if it will age like wine or milk.
@@dmywololowol that's fine by me. 👍
@@Orinslayer I'm not saying that you're wrong tho. I haven't seen much about Starfield on purpose to avoid being hyped up. I'm just curious to see if your opinion will be accurate because i wouldn't call any of Bethesda's maps to this day boring, but who knows, Starfield is something that they've never done before.
"Fallout76 was about getting mad at bethesda" is absolute gold
🎉
it was about getting a refund. truly a unique experiance
FO76 was garbage at first but I just played it again and it felt like a different game. It’s actually not bad from a survival/shooter/lore perspective. Some of the quests like “That sunken feeling” were super cool and memorable. Also some features like the scrap system and Legendary effect mods greatly improved on FO4 imo.
They just butchered the RPG elements and charging to store unlimited scrap is ridiculous. My biggest complaint is having to pay for live just to pay for Fallout 1st so I don’t have to play with people on live. Was worth it tho cuz I got to experience the whole story solo and that made it better until I got to a higher level and started doing events. So the game is fun as long as you don’t expect it to be like FO3 or FONV.
@@martymcyourflysdown6872 At least it has actual dialogue choices that depend on your special build. That alone elevates it above FO4 for me. 4 has better mods tho.
Brother they permanently banned me from fo76 and won’t tell me what I did wrong the support people are just ducking robots and it’s annoying
This is a really good Skeptic video. All the worries are solid and they aren't exactly enough to solidify that it'd be terrible or the best thing to ever exist.

And never actually said a damn thing😅
I've watched about a good dozen video's now about Starfield and with exception of some video that literally just explain what we're looking at, this video is the next worst one.
Comparisons being made that are extremely subjective at best, completely irrelevant at worst.
The only true concern that was briefly talked about was the procedurally generated loop and what that means for exploring planets while not having vehicles or other crafts for traversing the terrain. But outside of that... relatively worthless commentary.
@@skorpion7132 what in god's name are you talking about? he said a bunch of things, like procedural generation is usually soulless and bad, and surprise, that's exactly what happened. Cyberpunk 2077: I'm a joke to you ?
"the guy responsible for making companions might be a companion himself" actually had me rolling
I think it would be absolute hilarious if just like our solar system, half of Starfield’s planets were gas giants, effectively making them giant JPGs in the sky.
nfts in space lol
Still want to make or find a Gas Giant Upper Atmosphere Gas Mine, and name it Threshold.
Let's hope there's no Parasites or Heretics though
Gas giants are actually solid, the pressure will compress the gas the closer you get to the planets core, so you have several layers of normal gas that get denser and at one point solid but the pressure would be so hight that a no living creature could survive. That could mean that we can fly in the layer that isnt solid of the planet but not land on it. It propably wont be in the game but Bethesda plans to create so many dlcs that we could get that later on
@@thomyt6159 We don't know if the core of Gas Giants are solid or ultra-compressed gaseous-liquids like pressurised soup, it's all theory until we can delve deeper with scans.

I think Starfield will need a Mass Effect-esque stake in the Galaxy if they plan on going big. Otherwise they need to write an extremely compelling "down-to-Earth" character story.
Yeah I agree, I just have a feeling the main questline is going to be very bland.
I have no faith in Bethesda. They tried writing something nice and decent, but realistically haven't made a good game since Skyrim.
@@kylio95 I was literally feeling the same way but I'm really hoping the main quest line has....... has something to do with the alien artifacts and that serptend thing the serpent faction leader says he saw during a jump ;) Finding out about these two details today reeled me all the back way in, annoyingly!
Extremely compelling and story will not be found together in a Bethesda game. They are allergic to writing a good comprehensive narrative.
Contrary to what seems to be the general opinion here, I only want the main quest not to get in the way.
Don't give me some high stakes "you have to do this to save the universe" bullshit, I don't need that to remain engaged with a game.
Bethesda best stories always were in the side content, and I think I've already spotted my favorite one from the Direct. I couldn't care less about the Artifacts and the usual "ancient aliens" trope that has been done a thousands of times already, I wanna know everything about that generational ship, the one on which people thought they were the only ones that escaped Earth.
That quest is most likely not going to be a 50 hours epic journey, just a small side story while you're out exploring, but that's exactly the kind of stories I'm looking for, the small thing at the side of the road, the small stories of everyday people.
8:40 He's gonna have to come back to this video where its in black and white with a ton of reverb :(
For exploration and finding a certain spot in the universe, outer wilds is AMAZING
The main story for this game is directed by Will Shen, who did Far Harbor which was really good, so I hope the little information we've received is due to not wanting to spoil it, as opposed to it being very simple
Honestly, Bethesda never really spells out the main story for any of their games leading up to release. Skyrim was the only one that I can remember that gave the clearest picture of what was going on. You're dovahkin, you're killing dragons, there's nords
@@jase276 exactly
Far Harbor was very good. It was the one questline in FO4 I actually finished.
I still can’t understand how people don’t see harbor as a reskin of the main story line. 3 factions, one is turning people into synths another hates the other 2 factions and lastly the more idle neutral faction unless persuaded to take the offense. Institute/railroad, BoS, minutemen. Though the side quest for far habor was amazing.
@@Tate_THGFallout games often rehash the previous storylines and various tropes, but add something new each time. This has been a staple since fallout 2.

21:46 motion blur is actually really hard to do well - and when it is done well I actually like using it. I'm glad that they worked on it.
Yeah, it's probably per-object motion blur, which is blur added selectively to objects. One easy example is the barrels of the minigun in Eternal spinning up, there's a deliberate stylistic blur added to make it look more intense. So, them helping Bethsoft on blur isn't too crazy.
First thing I turn off in a game, never seen it done correctly.
Why would anyone keep motion blur on though.

Being a skeptic always proves me right these days. Hyping something up always ends up the way Cyberpunk or Fallout 76 did.
No, not _always_ ( for example, Baldur's Gate 3 lived up to the hype), but often times yes.
The difference is the hype behind Baldur’s Gate was not unfounded. People had already been playing early versions of that game for years.
It didn’t just pop into existence like Starfield will when it releases.
@@donnydogpiss4533 what TJ said, plus I heard (I dont know, cause I dont play such games) that its full of woke stuff. Some people say its shoved down your throat even with things like pronouns in the character creation. Maybe for most that does not make the game worse, I would argue if something like that is a priority, it takes away from other aspects of a game. But thats just my opinion as like I said, I havent played any Baldur's Gate game.
@@FatManJackson what an idiodic echo chamber opinion to adopt as your own. A female being called a she and a male being called a him doesnt make ANY game bad. People choose to get angry over the smallest things that ultimately dont matter. plus you can literally choose if you want to be called a him or a her, regardless of any physical features. i dont think there is any nonbinary pronouns in baldurs gate 3, but tbh it cant change now, the amount of money it would cost to add those pronouns in game would be too much
@@FatManJackson Cringe ass take. You're free to use whatever pronouns you want in the game, so how is that "shoved down your throat"?
The graphics complaint is legit. The character cutscenes from Baldur's Gate 3 has completely raised the bar for me for what character models can both look like and ACT like. It's the natural, dynamic body movements that makes the characters feel real, and it's so sad to see the Bethesda cutscenes where they just... stand there. And i knowwww the voice acting for starfield won't be anywhere close in quality to BG3. I know they're not the same type of RPGs but for the amount of time Bethesda has worked on this game, i would hope for more emotion in the characters
Yep, animations, character faces and voices as well as PC performance are my main worries about the game.
They use a completely different engine. Different engine = Pro's and con. Its better in some ways (gameplay (possibility to do fps) / modification (mods)...) and worse in others (Character animation / graphics...). The Divinity engine is newer than the Creation engine so logically better. A bit unfair to compare the two.
The standards were raised for a few months with bg3 but then they crashed hard after this game, the devs were right when they said we shouldn’t expect this to be a new standard, just a anomaly, starfield is more like the new standards, bland boring slop with countless bugs they are too lazy and incompetent to fix
7:59 Wow, you must've travelled to the future, then went back in time to make the video, LOL

I'm most excited for what the modding community is going to make. Can you imagine what people are gonna do with how easily they could just make a "point of interest pack" or "creature parts pack" or "gun parts pack" and next thing you know the game is full of a _ludicrous_ amount of cool things to explore and find.
That's the part I'm most anxious about. How moddable is that first iteration of the Creation Engine 2 ? There was a real difference between rough but moddable Skyrim and more sophisticated but rigid Fallout 4. There's a reason why Bethesda has been able to keep a player base for more than 10 years with Skyrim. If the Creation Kit only allows us to reskin a few weapons or ship parts, or forces the Creation Club on us once again, it's not going to fare well.
@@the_arcanum well, bethesda knows the importance of the modding community. they have said it will be very moddable, and it will come with modding tools of its very own.

I suppose Mass Effect is a popular space game that showed what you can do with the mystery of a space game, at least in the first game before it all went tits up. But another one that's far more niche that I think most of these games could learn from is Escape Velocity Nova. Multiple factions with their own storyline that is a full game in of itself, with each having its own flavor. From being an almost indentured servant to the space-CIA as a telepath constantly doing spycraft and betrayals, to leading various navies in epic wars and politicking, there's so much potential for storylines in a big space setting, but it feels like these games almost always squander it. It's funny how in ME especially while the Reaper mystery was cool at first, some of the better parts of the setting were only gestured at rather than mined for their full potential, like all the politics & war that takes place in the setting being purely in the background, rather than something you can take part in. I get it's hard to produce this spectacle in a game, and that's why Skyrim's civil war amounted to almost nothing too, but "it's hard to show cool stuff" really shouldn't be an excuse for dropping the ball, especially when it comes to AAA titles.
Even Andromeda was good comparatively and no one who was into Mass Effect was too stoked about andromeda.
This is obviously pretty wishful thinking but I am pretty hopeful about starfield. The direct showcase was so transparent that I think that they truly do want to release a finished game. Also I think that starfield is Bethesda's last opportunity to reestablish themselves as one of if not the best developer game studio. Their last few games haven't done very well so starfield is a prime opportunity to make a comeback.
Then again..... Cyberpunk had a showcase....
If Bethesda is trying to establish itself as the best video game studio then it's a guarantee that they will fall short, people liked their previous games because they are easy to play and can be fun to explore when you first play them. In my opinion, don't expect Bethesda to reinvent anything, they have shown that they are consistant in their game design and Starfield will probably be a lot like their previous games.
I might as well be the future when I tell you newsflash it won’t
Idk about one of the best. Bethesda games have always been pretty meh. What makes Bethesda kings in the market is their modding community, imo. They let their users do whatever they want and it really extends the shelf lives of their games. I have a feeling that Starfield is going to be worth the hype. If anything, Bethesda knows how to make an addicting game
@@jase276Bethesda games are as meh as you make them. The reason their games are so popular is because they let you do basically anything you want. Saying their games are onky popular because of mods is a huge overstatement and a disservice to the developers. Skyrim sold 3.8 million PHYSICAL copies in 48 hours. There were zero mods back then. Also, how have Bethesda games sold on Playstation at all if people only play them for the mods? You can't mod them on PS. And modding isn't that much better on Xbox either; the mods that you can get on xbox don't make the game better, they only add content
My friends and I have discussed this extensively. After Spore in '08 I've gained a sixth sense in knowing when a game is going to disappoint. I call it the Wee-Woo Meter, it's a logarithmic scale. This one registers as a 6.2 on the Wee-Woo Meter, it's going to be disappointing but still enjoyable. It's going to sell like hotcakes and then a month later everyone is going to complain that it's really not that great.
MY wee-woo meter was the opposite. I feel the first month people will bag on it and complain, and the second month is when the game takes off

Starfield seems to follow all the tropes of previous Bethesda games, average graphics, but stunning environments, mediocre character models but with great characterisation, massive play areas, made with a crappy engine. It's basically everything we've come to expect from a Bethesda title, how it all comes together within the main storyline is what will make or break it though. I just wish they'd move on from the frankenstein Embryo/Creation engine, it was probably too late to move to UE5, but even UE4 would have been an improvement.
We all wish they'd move on, but they've been beating fallout and elders' corpses for fifteen years so fat luck on that hope.
Maybe they could move on from ruining everything they touch and stop making games entirely.

This video is awesome. Thank you!
this is the first dude i see point out how these are billion dollar companies....... same with rockstar they should be able to remake all there old games with new hightech graphics easy....... but they dont.... its a dam shame......
here after release. pain.
8:10 When you land, the game procedurally generates a large area around the ship to explore. But if you try to keep walking in one direction you'll hit a boundary after a while.
Sound aweful
@@simonsaysssss Its the equivalent of traversing Skyrim for 20 mins before then being told you cant go any further to explore that dungeon in the distance. Ok, so you take off and land on another zone to get closer. That dungeon has now dissapeared.
@@thanos43infinity but you can't go straight for 20 min in skyrim without hitting boundaries. That game feels massive because there is just soo much to do on the road to the next place. It isn't infinitely big or anything close to that! You can actually look up map size comparisons and see what I mean, even Elden Ring is not nearly as big as it feels when you play and I find it to be massive as well!
I do worry about the walking only thing
@@LucidTurtle You have the immersion in Skyrim though because those boundaries are mountains that you can still climb rather than a seperate tile that you then have to land on only for those mountains to have now dissapeared.
yup and your base dissapeared too if you got one on the previous tile@@thanos43infinity God I miss old time bethesda when this company was a precursor. Now its the opposite. OLD and shitty engine, mediocre graphics (good graphists/stylists/artistic direction though, it compensate). Every game in the genre right now you can go from the earth soil to stratosphere or space without loading screen. It is the norm to go everywhere, from planet a to planet b without loading and with interactions betweens spaces. For example a spaceship can attack you from space and hurt you on the ground and it is the norm in 2023. But in this game, it is like every planet is shielded. And a thousand planets? classic tod. If they manage to do One good planet without the emptiness feeling, I would be surprised. But you know how generated world works and what are their defaults. They better have thousand of hand made dungeons with very good gameplay to sprinkle in their generated void without any redundancy or this will be a massacre
Your channel growth is actually super deserved, you can tell how much effort goes into these videos and they are all so in depth and entertaining. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much!
I just "rediscovered" the channel(subscribed b4 and forgot) and totally surprised to see "only" 300k. It's still a lot, but was expecting 1mil+. better than most in this RUclips genre.
I really like how you kept the momentum of the topic going even with comedic moments. Most creators try to force the jokes onto you but this was spot on
Turns out you were right on the money with this video.
1. Cut the amount of planets down by three quarters
2. Merge multiple planets together and call them different biomes
3. Generate 3x more content per planet for like 250 planets
= profit
Fallout 76 was the game that killed my ability to get excited for games, and Cyberpunk broke my heart when it launched...but I'm praying that Starfield is the game that can let me trust again
Finally, an honest take on Starfield without all the fanboy hype train. I'm excited, yes, but I also remember this is Bathesda we're talking about with a proven track record of releasing games with a supersized serving of bugs.
No matter how much do they update the engines, it keeps feeling like you're still playing Morrowind...
@@Pikilloificationcuz they need a new engine
@MisterK-YT you can do a lot with an old engine, problem is bathesda has always lacked capable programmers to upgrade it properly.
@@miguellopez3392 mind boggling that such a big studio is lacking on that front. Like, you should be able to pull some of the best talent in the world at that level. I feel similarly about FromSoftware. Like, how can a studio THAT successful not be able to get a couple skilled guys that can make sure their frame rate and frame pacing isn’t so terrible?! ESPECIALLY now after Elden Ring’s success. If their next big game STILL has performance issues, that’ll be super disappointing. With all the money from Elden, there’s NO WAY they can’t hire a few experts to sort their performance issues. ESPECIALLY given that FromSoftware games are not very graphically intensive. They’re certainly not known for their graphics.
You're saying it like those bugs ever stopped people from enjoying the shit out of their games
This video was so well done, had me giggling like a nerd. Reluctant to be excited for Starfield but hoping for the best 🤞🏻
I'm not confident my PC can run it 60 fps, so I'm in no hurry to get it on release. I will happily wait for reviews and whatnot before considering a purchase.
You make content that genuinely surprises me that you’re not huge yet. Keep it up! Also I didn’t even think about the graphics disparity with this title, thank you for illuminating me
207k ain't nothin' to sneeze at!
Oh trust me, he's huge. I've seen.
keep it in your pants
9:17 this caught me so off guard lmfao. Hilarious but also accurate to what I imagine a fake/futuristic video game spaceship would sound like.
Glad you're critical. I feel the hype is through the roof with this one and I don't share the hype. Im really really REALLY sceptical and curious how this turns out because I don't believe a word Todd says ever after 76 😂 I hope everyone gets the game they looking forward to but I got a bad feeling about this one. Nice video, loved it!
There was nothing critical in this video
This video touches exactly how I feel. Im keeping my expectations in check but very optimistic, since every other Single-Player Bethesda game I’ve completely been sucked in.
Just a few more days!
This video is what I want all gaming videos to be like. What a great channel!
I agree to most of this, however, the base building/decorating is kind of funny to me, i like that there atleast is the option to be as detailed as you want, even just for yourself and the npc's you banish to your barren wasteland moon where you mine moonrocks to buy extra cargo for your ships. But that's about it, i am carefully excited about it :)
red dead 2 actually was built off a engine that originally was meant for a table tennis game, bethesda coders just suck
Half of them are basic level coders that only got hired on to appease esg ratings and solely diversity hires, the few that actually know what they’re doing are overloaded with work
Watching all of your videos the last 3 to 4 days and i love it. Thank you
You deserve all the attention you're getting, man. You put out seriously good content with lots of love and time poured into it and it shows. I know in the future this channel is going to be gigantic. even compared to what it is now. Just don't lose yourself on the way to the top!
ty!! I'll try to stay on the path!
Congrats on 200k! You definitely deserve it. Your videos have some of the best production quality I’ve ever seen on RUclips.
ah thanks!!
Was intrigued by the title of this video but didn’t recognize the channel. It always feels like a chore to me starting a new channel, I don’t want a video essay, I don’t want to learn the person.
But halfway thru this video and I’m like helll yeahhh this is great. Every second has me interested. I always like to stop at these moments and think “is this gonna be a new one ‘my channels’ that I watch for years? Is this like me stumbling on my first NakeyJakey video?”
There have been false positives before where after 5 videos I get a read in the person and am like meh. But I think I’m feeling this one, time to engage bingeing
Genuinely trying to soak up as much Starfield scepticism over the next 2 weeks to help manage expectations.
14:38 I have to disagree it looks way better than any of their previous games to date.
“I don’t things are going to look better than this for a while”…. With Starfield “things have looked better than this, for a while” 😂 Never disappointed with your videos Jack.
this made me burst out with laughter, honestly Skyrim didn't look mind blowing back when it was released, it looked good but people were rushing to mod visual improvements for a reason.
@@Jumoana Bethesda games were never graphical milestones and often quite behind. I honestly never minded and to this day try to leave the aesthetics as "vanilla" as possible.
What people seem to forget is how the composition of graphics, the world/level design and lastly totally underrated: sound and music design impacts your experience in a game.
Skyrims graphics are outdated but I physically cannot not enjoy wandering through skyrim at night with a crazy aurora borealis going and secunda playing mixed with ambient sounds.
i guess? the game was bland grey and white mostly i thought it was horrible level design too, simple and lazy.
anyone can skybox you a aurora borealis in any game.@@brohvakiindova4452
Dude it was a jump scare seeing how bad the faces are in the Starfield Direct.
i randomly found your channel this is the most entertaining video i found on starfield also i think you predicted the ending....
