I think it would be absolute hilarious if just like our solar system, half of Starfield’s planets were gas giants, effectively making them giant JPGs in the sky.
Gas giants are actually solid, the pressure will compress the gas the closer you get to the planets core, so you have several layers of normal gas that get denser and at one point solid but the pressure would be so hight that a no living creature could survive. That could mean that we can fly in the layer that isnt solid of the planet but not land on it. @@Maximilian-Schmidt Realistically, this is a modern perspective. Modded Skyrim for 2011 I think was amazing, but to each its own. My problem with Bethesda is not wanting to learn anything from better companies, like FromSoft and keep making the same games. If they released Skyrim today, it would of course be laughable.
The main story for this game is directed by Will Shen, who did Far Harbor which was really good, so I hope the little information we've received is due to not wanting to spoil it, as opposed to it being very simple
Honestly, Bethesda never really spells out the main story for any of their games leading up to release. Skyrim was the only one that I can remember that gave the clearest picture of what was going on. You're dovahkin, you're killing dragons, there's nords
I still can’t understand how people don’t see harbor as a reskin of the main story line. 3 factions, one is turning people into synths another hates the other 2 factions and lastly the more idle neutral faction unless persuaded to take the offense. Institute/railroad, BoS, minutemen. Though the side quest for far habor was amazing.

The base building and decorating is one of the things I'm most excited for. I have 100s of hours in Fallout 4 settlement building & countless hours in games like Valheim or Minecraft & I'm always the builder for my group in Rust, with 100s of hours in build servers perfecting my base. Could never get into Fallout settlement building because well... anything I make just looks shit. I'd probably be a lot more excited if I can build things that don't look like tetanus town.
This is a really good Skeptic video. All the worries are solid and they aren't exactly enough to solidify that it'd be terrible or the best thing to ever exist.
I've watched about a good dozen video's now about Starfield and with exception of some video that literally just explain what we're looking at, this video is the next worst one. Comparisons being made that are extremely subjective at best, completely irrelevant at worst. The only true concern that was briefly talked about was the procedurally generated loop and what that means for exploring planets while not having vehicles or other crafts for traversing the terrain. But outside of that... relatively worthless commentary.
@@skorpion7132 what in god's name are you talking about? he said a bunch of things, like procedural generation is usually soulless and bad, and surprise, that's exactly what happened. He called it a month ago. Get your brain checked, try reading a book for the first time in your life that might help too
My friends and I have discussed this extensively. After Spore in '08 I've gained a sixth sense in knowing when a game is going to disappoint. I call it the Wee-Woo Meter, it's a logarithmic scale. This one registers as a 6.2 on the Wee-Woo Meter, it's going to be disappointing but still enjoyable. It's going to sell like hotcakes and then a month later everyone is going to complain that it's really not that great.
You might need to add more batteries to your meter after this year's games... I totally understand that sixth sense feeling, though. No idea where the intuition came from how how to explain it.
Well...now that Starfield out we find out ALL spacetravel is FAST TRAVEL.....no need for a ship really for it has no purpose but the fact you need one in a space game. Starfield is a true Bethesda JOKE
It's what losers do. There is more clicks to going negative then positive. When he is wrong it's "oh well" and if he's right then he really "smart" yeah well no he's not either way.
I thought I knew how to play Fallout 4….then I got my gf into it. She spent hundreds of hours making bases, building settlement supply lines, and making her own vault look like the coolest Fallout vault youve ever seen! I had the same experience. Fallout 4 is my wife's favorite game of all time and it's hilarious to see the crazy things she does with modding and settlements. I'll buy her Starfield just for that alone, hardly even care about playing it myself.
Probably the best and most balanced video I've seen anyone do on Starfield, so, congrats! You may not drop a video very often Jack, but when you do it makes us all wish you made more.

@@miguellopez3392 mind boggling that such a big studio is lacking on that front. Like, you should be able to pull some of the best talent in the world at that level. I feel similarly about FromSoftware. Like, how can a studio THAT successful not be able to get a couple skilled guys that can make sure their frame rate and frame pacing isn’t so terrible?! ESPECIALLY now after Elden Ring’s success. If their next big game STILL has performance issues, that’ll be super disappointing. With all the money from Elden, there’s NO WAY they can’t hire a few experts to sort their performance issues. ESPECIALLY given that FromSoftware games are not very graphically intensive. They’re certainly not known for their graphics.
Yeah, it's probably per-object motion blur, which is blur added selectively to objects. One easy example is the barrels of the minigun in Eternal spinning up, there's a deliberate stylistic blur added to make it look more intense. So, them helping Bethsoft on blur isn't too crazy.
The graphics complaint is legit. The character cutscenes from Baldur's Gate 3 has completely raised the bar for me for what character models can both look like and ACT like. It's the natural, dynamic body movements that makes the characters feel real, and it's so sad to see the Bethesda cutscenes where they just... stand there. And i knowwww the voice acting for starfield won't be anywhere close in quality to BG3. I know they're not the same type of RPGs but for the amount of time Bethesda has worked on this game, i would hope for more emotion in the characters
They use a completely different engine. Different engine = Pro's and con. Its better in some ways (gameplay (possibility to do fps) / modification (mods)...) and worse in others (Character animation / graphics...). The Divinity engine is newer than the Creation engine so logically better. A bit unfair to compare the two.
The standards were raised for a few months with bg3 but then they crashed hard after this game, the devs were right when they said we shouldn’t expect this to be a new standard, just a anomaly, starfield is more like the new standards, bland boring slop with countless bugs they are too lazy and incompetent to fix
This is my first experience with you, and as an optimist, I was worried. I just "rediscovered" the channel(subscribed b4 and forgot) and totally surprised to see "only" 300k. It's still a lot, but was expecting 1mil+. better than most in this RUclips genre.
The gunplay has been the same since Fallout 3. It’s been improved drastically with FO4. Enemies have always had no reactions to being shot. You can shoot guys with a 10mm pistol and if they’re melee, theyre gonna chase your ass down.
Also, open-ended games exist. Kenshi has no main story and it’s a great game. Star Wars Galaxies was an open ended mmo where you could be anything from a moisture farmer to a bounty hunter. I’d be fine if this game was open ended as well. I wish there were more AAA open-ended games.
Personally I never understood why people don’t like decoration systems being in the game. For me settlements was one of the most unique and fun parts of fallout 4. Even if you don’t think you’d use it, a lot of people have fun with it plus the modding goes crazy.
The problem with the settlement system I found was that it felt like an entirely new game and system outside of the core shooting-looting-crafting loop. Sure, the crafting segment of the gameplay loop might be attached to the settlement system but you divert resources from crafting better equipment to making settlements that will hardly benefit you until mid-late into the game. On another point is that the settlement system is basically managing a group of npcs, while fun (as someone that enjoys that facet of gameplay) isn't everyone's cup of tea, especially when many people are drawn to bethesda titles not to manage a settlement, but to explore, shoot, and experience main and side stories. It could have been implemented better in ways that better serve the core gameplay loop if they had the talent behind their team. As it is, even for me as someone who enjoyed it, I felt it more tedious to approach the settlement system when I could just be playing a better designed management game like rimworld, dwarf fortress, etc.
@@headache237 as someone who is also in the camp like the OP of enjoying the settlement building I also couldn't agree more with you. I think that initial tutorial to explain how it works with Sturges should really be the only quest related to the settlement building. There should have been an option in vanilla to just say "build a default settlement" and have it automatically build it like the mods that later came out that let you just select a settlement blueprint to build.
As a FO4 base builder nuts, Settlement building is still so janky, with all the restriction and the ugliness of block base system also clipping issues and AI pathfinding problems. And thw goddamn build limit is so annoying.

I agree to most of this, however, the base building/decorating is kind of funny to me, i like that there atleast is the option to be as detailed as you want, even just for yourself and the npc's you banish to your barren wasteland moon where you mine moonrocks to buy extra cargo for your ships. But that's about it, i am carefully excited about it :)
I really like how you kept the momentum of the topic going even with comedic moments. Most creators try to force the jokes onto you but this was spot on
I'm most excited for what the modding community is going to make. Can you imagine what people are gonna do with how easily they could just make a "point of interest pack" or "creature parts pack" or "gun parts pack" and next thing you know the game is full of a _ludicrous_ amount of cool things to explore and find.
That's the part I'm most anxious about. How moddable is that first iteration of the Creation Engine 2 ? There was a real difference between rough but moddable Skyrim and more sophisticated but rigid Fallout 4. There's a reason why Bethesda has been able to keep a player base for more than 10 years with Skyrim. If the Creation Kit only allows us to reskin a few weapons or ship parts, or forces the Creation Club on us once again, it's not going to fare well.
@@the_arcanum well, bethesda knows the importance of the modding community. they have said it will be very moddable, and it will come with modding tools of its very own.

I think Starfield will need a Mass Effect-esque stake in the Galaxy if they plan on going big. Otherwise they need to write an extremely compelling "down-to-Earth" character story.
Yeah I agree, I just have a feeling the main questline is going to be very bland.
I have no faith in Bethesda. They tried writing something nice and decent, but realistically haven't made a good game since Skyrim.
@@kylio95 I was literally feeling the same way but I'm really hoping the main quest line has....... has something to do with the alien artifacts and that serptend thing the serpent faction leader says he saw during a jump ;) Finding out about these two details today reeled me all the back way in, annoyingly!
Extremely compelling and story will not be found together in a Bethesda game. They are allergic to writing a good comprehensive narrative.
@@jase276 exactly
Far Harbor was very good. It was the one questline in FO4 I actually finished.

No, not _always_ ( for example, Baldur's Gate 3 lived up to the hype), but often times yes.
The difference is the hype behind Baldur’s Gate was not unfounded. People had already been playing early versions of that game for years.

My friends and I have discussed this extensively. After Spore in '08 I've gained a sixth sense in knowing when a game is going to disappoint. I call it the Wee-Woo Meter, it's a logarithmic scale. It's going to sell like hotcakes and then a month later everyone is going to complain that it's really not that great.

@@Pikilloificationcuz they need a new engine
@MisterK-YT you can do a lot with an old engine, problem is bathesda has always lacked capable programmers to upgrade it properly.
You're saying it like those bugs ever stopped people from enjoying the shit out of their games
21:46 motion blur is actually really hard to do well - and when it is done well I actually like using it. I'm glad that they worked on it.
Yeah, it's probably per-object motion blur, which is blur added selectively to objects. One easy example is the barrels of the minigun in Eternal spinning up, there's a deliberate stylistic blur added to make it look more intense. So, them helping Bethsoft on blur isn't too crazy.
First thing I turn off in a game, never seen it done correctly.
Why would anyone keep motion blur on though.
Yep, animations, character faces and voices as well as PC performance are my main worries about the game.
But man, this video was continuously entertaining, and you kept me excited alongside you even when you were describing your worries. Your critiques felt like genuine observations and not at all made me feel shameful for being excited about the game.

This aged super well. Starfield is a snooze fest.
Personally I never understood why people don’t like decoration systems being in the game. For me settlements was one of the most unique and fun parts of fallout 4. Even if you don’t think you’d use it, a lot of people have fun with it plus the modding goes crazy.
It needs to optional and not storyline
You have very low standards, thats why you like it. We want a competent RPG because we have high standards. Thats the difference.

I remember watching your "red dead online is ruined" a year ago, seeing this video about starfield recommended I thought "hmmm I definitely watch a video from this guy", and man am I not disappointed, I knew it was bout to be a masterpiece, I remembered how well your critique is structured, and how it comes all together so well. Definitely getting subbed and hope you get more videos like these that blow up. You definitely deserve it
The hands close up was the best. Way to have a sense of humor and not being afraid to make fun of yourself. Just earned a sub
cringe
High key dumb comparing the graphics of TLOU2 to starfield.
Edit: I agree it's about time they gave us official coop instead of constantly hampering the modders working for free to do it for them.
True. tLOU 2 is a linear narrative game on a single script, I don’t get the comparison
I have to agree with you. This game just seems too good to be true, so I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a flop. It's always disappointing when a highly anticipated game falls short of any expectation.
Its only a flop to those that set their expectations way too high.
@@thedovahk9398can't blame people for raising their expectations based on pure lies from developers you know
I personally love setting up bases and outposts...I spent hours doing that in Fallout. Its super fun. But I get it its not everyones cup of tea. But at the same time ( because of my creative side) I'm like "whaaaatt?"
In Fallout 4, I felt like I was able to roleplay a scavenger better than any other Fallout game. Is it any surprise the most popular Fallout 3/New Vegas mods made their way into Fallout 4 officially? Fallout 4 really delivered in many aspects, I love the game. I was so glad to ignore the story and just mind my own business, explore, and defend my home in an interesting sandbox world
mass effect andromeda had better facial animation and graphics ffs
*Android 16* "Let's not get crazy!"
Sorry my face is tired
Idk why but you talking about how the NPC might be boring, and it showing like a futuristic city, just made me want a cowboy bebop game. Because the characters are full of life.
I would LOVE a Devolver produced Cowboy Bebop game. (I say Devolver Digital because they have such a good track record of games with personality and quality, both or which would need to be necessary for a Bebop game.) Idk who would develop it though, or what it would look like. I just know the soundtrack would blast
How would those npcs be full of life?
@@kehbab What do you mean? Have you not seen the show?
@@DisDatK9 Devolver is dope, but honestly.. Insomniac is it? The ones behind the modern spiderman games, I'd trust them as well.
@@kintsugi3932 i hope you mean the anime? Becuase if you mean the weird adaptation i would like to laugh in your face
Been intentionally keeping myself in the dark on this game, but had to watch your video on it. It was like watching a kid get excited about Skyrim, or maybe that's just how I feel now :)
Oh my goodness you were right about the rovers
cant believe I only just now found your channel, this is the kind of high quality in depth discussion I've been looking for. also you are actor Dan Stevens doppelganger lmao
haha wow i looked him up, that's actually pretty crazy!
11:35 you didn’t have to do him like that 💀
Jack, I don't know if you know this or not but you are "rewatch" levels of good in your production and presentation. There are few channels like Dunkey, NakeyJakey, RedLetterMedia, SovietWomble, Internet Historian and DougDoug who I go back to and rewatch videos I've already seen as a comforting kind of thing. You have been added to that list. It's immense impressive the work you have been doing and I just want to encourage you to keep it up. If you get imposter syndrome telling you that you actually suck and aren't good, do your best to ignore it and remember there are people out here in your audience who think your work is good enough to rewatch. Thanks man
as accurate as ever, it's really nice having one smart gamer around
haha thank you!
Genuinely trying to soak up as much Starfield scepticism over the next 2 weeks to help manage expectations.
The best part of Pirates of the Caribbean Online was going out to sea with your friends and plundering ships. The chaos of trying to organize your crew was unmatched. I'd love to be able to do something like that in this game.
God that game was amazing and now I just want to play that again.
@@aglazeddoughnut5250 There's a free remake now.
