Interior first? Exterior first? What's the best process for detailing? How can I be faster?

There's a lot involved with choosing the best process for efficiency with auto detailing. A lot of factors have to be considered- What is the weather for the day? Humid? Cold? Well the carpets have time to dry if you shampoo them later in the day? How heavily soiled is the interior? Is there lots of pet hair? Are you needing to polish the exterior or is the exterior heavily soiled? How big is the vehicle? Are you working out in the sun where you will have to battle water spots when it's wiser to do the exterior first before the sun becomes an issue? All of these questions affect how I determine my order or process. Either way, get into a routine, learn your chemicals, equipment and establish a routine. It doesn't have to be rigid but it also doesn't need to change every vehicle. Make a list, check things off and get into the groove! Hope this helps some of you out. What's your process? What ways do you feel you're efficient or could improve?

Great video Chelsea! I always start with blowing out & vacuuming to not only get it out of the way but to keep from getting loose dirt & dust on the exterior once it’s washed. Once I get vacuuming done I then wash, clay, blow out & dry the exterior. I do this before cleaning the interior because like you I pressure wash door jambs so to keep from doubling back I do it this way. After the exterior is cleaned & dry I then clean the interior & do the finishing touches like glass, interior detailer final vacuum etc. finally I go back to the exterior & seal, tire shine, exhaust polish, windows etc. I have found atleast for me…that this is the most efficient way to do a full detail without doubling back & repeating work.😁👍

Madame Chelsea you're right since sometimes we have to change the order from interior to exterior or vice versa. Your checklist resembles mine but in mine I have listed items in the vehicle so I don't miss anything. Being in our island in the Caribbean were we don't have the issue of winter, but we still have to deal with heat, sun, humidity (here is average 88%) and rain as an issue because starts raining all of the sudden. Doing detailing as a side job, I schedule customers weekdays during nights and weekends after 2 PM. This way my clients receive their vehicles in the morning giving me time for everything to dry. If the vehicle is coated it has time to cure and not get water. Having a regular job during the day, I had to develop a checklist that works for me but on weekdays my sleep time is less so I have to verify better how the vehicle is, in order to use the best of my time to detail.
Thanks for your video and sharing your methods since we have to develop and use them like playing chess, specially when we have kids(I have 4 sons). Like Brian from Apex Detail says "Preparation is key".

If I’m giving my truck the full monte, I do the exterior first, then interior. This way when I open the doors, I use detailer spray to clean and dry all the door jambs at the time I get into the interior. 👍🏻

This process would be excellent to make a checklist of the steps your routinely do and give a copy to potential new customers and each customers that you just did there car to realize all the work you did for your fee. I don't usually clean engines any longer,but, that used to be My starting point...to the interior,door jambs,trunk jambs,fuel door, clay/de-con,wash,dry,compound,polish,coat,etc...final wipe to remove dust...tire dressing/windows are always last.

I like doing the exterior first, that way I can pressure wash door jambs and not have to go back over the interior, unless I’m shampooing or depending on weather conditions (early morning/afternoon) It’s a small thing but that’s how I make my decision.

Very helpful video, Chelsea! I'm just a weekend warrior, but I still want do be as efficient as I can be. It's hot here in Tennessee, and I find that I'm dripping sweat all in/on my car be the time I'm done. So I want to finish as quickly as possible! A quick question: when you're pressure washing the door jambs, how do you keep from spraying water into the interior? Thanks!
You may a little thats why I do them first and do a quick wipe with a drying towel or microfiber. The short sprayer helps control overspray but its on plastic and no more or less than you'd get opening your door in the rain.
I’m an ONR door jamb guy myself lol my biggest issue is no garage, it’s a major roadblock.

Depend of job and temperature, I do interior first in am. If I work in pm, I start with exterior. 11 am to 1 pm the sun ☀️ oufffff HOT ... and I have my one push Canopy 😜
I have exactly , exactly the same order of you interior and exterior process .... 😳 With experience , I learn that if I clean Plastic and then shampoo, I put solutions everywhere on my clean plastics 😬 Rookie mistake ! 😜
Just my opinion and to each his/her own.. There are a few reasons I always start on the exterior, well, my go to first thing is always tires, rims, wells engine etc. 1st, water in the door jambs, after drying the exterior including the rims, I open one side at a time and clean the jambs. 2nd, next on the interior gives the vehicle plenty of time to dry before applying whichever paint protectio. (never fun polishing a vehicle while water is still dripping out of somewhere). The last 2 things I always do is windows and final, dress tires. Sometimes you will get sling from waxes, compounds etc on the glass so that's just one of the last steps, I never did like opening and closing the doors more than once, also, could never go from tire shine to windows, just seems wrong! HA! So shiney tires was always the final step besides maybe a final inspection. This is just how I've learned to shave some time, I could be wrong so if anyone has a better way please tell me, I've only been detailing professionally since 1992. ;)
Forgot! I always pull the mats out 1st if I'm doing a full interior shampoo! Sometimes its better to pressure wash them, then it leaves plenty of time for them to dry whilst doing the rest of the vehicle.
Thank your for your detailed explanation, this is a video not many detailers want to make, so thank you for making this video! I also do my door jams first regardless of interior or exterior detail it'll always bite you in the butt if you don't do them first.
The question I have for you is, when you shampoo and then do your plastic surfaces how do you clean them with out ending up all wet from the moist fabrics? Thanks!
definitely takes a little bit of effort to control overspray but I'm not saturating my plastics that much but I'd rather shampoo first because if I've already cleaned my plastics and shampoo I'm more likely to get overspray from shampooing than from cleaning plastics. A quick wipe with the microfiber removes any overspray from the seats and carpets. It's unavoidable that you're going to get overspray on either surface when you're cleaning them but I find there's less if I do shampooing first then plastics versus plastics first then shampooing.

Starting price for a full detail on a sedan starts at $300 and it about a 5 hr appointment

If you do your jambs first Chelsea, then aren’t you wiping down the jambs twice, because don’t you dry them off after the washing too, right? Maybe you like jambs though! 😁
I do a touchless rinse initially to blow grease and dirt off and then after washing and rinsing dry them off with my towel so technically I'm only touching them once but find it deep cleans better and minimizes the risk of scratching if I just dry them after washing

Superior Products Rage which is now called Dark Fury. I dilute it 4:1 for door jambs.
