I found using q-tips a brilliant substitute for the masking fluid in this tutorial! Instructions were so clear and I was able to follow along easily as a beginner. One of the brilliant things about Karen's tutorials is that one can see where one can let the imagination take off on the next iteration and the next...it never feels like paint_by-numbers. Thank you, Karen! I always look forward to your postings.
Thank you Jenny for your lovely comment and for sharing. I am so glad that you find my videos and instructions easy to follow especially as a beginner. I’m delighted that you find the tutorials allow your imagination to flow, and it doesn’t feel like painting by numbers! Happy painting, more videos to follow like this… Take care :-)
I have watched this several times now, having first watched it a couple of years ago. I intended to delete it once watched, but I keep coming back to it, because it is so good. I pick something else up each time I watch it. Thank you! 🙏💖
Hello Karen , thank you for your instructions, I am very new to art am 74 years old only started a few months ago & a reason to stay home with this virus thing, something I have always wanted to do since a small child , now it is time to learn something new Utube is so helpful. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your message Marlene, how wonderful to start watercolour painting at the age of 74! My hat off to you! Enjoy this journey, don’t be hard on yourself, practice practice practice! Take care :-)
I'm German. You have a wonderful way of describing the execution of the painting process! With every minute the joy of the visibly growing work of art increases until you bring it to a climax with the smallest details... Thank you so much!
our instructor just gave us a "landscape" assignment & I attempted your dandelion field - really enjoyed & your instruction was excellent, thank you very much, mj
I actually think this un-masked version is better! It's not "pure," since you had to use white paint, but having that very faint yellow left in the circles just made it feel like it was a whole piece. I don't know, I really like those little white puffs! I have yet to try masking fluid, so I'm going to try this version. Thank you for the tutorial!
Brilliant tutorial thanks Karen! Learnt so much and love the fact that I only need three colours plus the gouache. Your style is structured but loose and easy for a beginner to follow. I learnt heaps just from this one video!
Thank you so much again Carole! I am delighted that you learnt heaps here... I try to structure the tutorials, but also give you a little freedom to express your own individual style 😊
Karen, you are just the gal I've been looking for! This is the first of your tutorials that I've tried and I am amazed at the results. This is exactly the style I've been wanting to paint - structured but loose. (I'm really not a spontaneous person at all.) I used Q-tips to remove the paint for the dandelions, and I can honestly say that I much preferred the outcome using those than having the harder edge that masking fluid would have left - for this application anyway. And on my next walk I'm going to be procuring a twig. Wouldn't have thought about that, but it looks like so much fun to paint with! I can't wait to get back to my paints today and have a go at another tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and creativity with us!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for sharing! I am so pleased you found this tutorial helpful and that it inspired you not only to paint these dandelions but to paint some more! Twigs are so much fun and really loosen you up! Have fun painting!
Fabulous! More spring into summer foliage and fields please! I love the lifting out method. My painting looks great! Very clear easy to follow teaching!
Thank you so much for teaching your techniques .. I Love your artwork so much.. you make me enjoy in watercolor painting .. Thank you ... sooooooooo much
Just found u. New subscriber. Omg. U have no idea how happy it made me to watch this. Your instruction is so perfect. I can’t wait to try this. Thanks so much. I needed some inspiration. Now I have it.
Thank you Deborah for your lovely comment and for subscribing to the channel. So glad that you have found me and you like my teaching style. Happy painting :-)
Thanks so much Karen. Love all the techniques. It's been three years since I started to learn to paint. When do I start to remember all the tips and tricks 🤔 lol. 😉
Thanks so much Annette, so pleased you like the techniques! I would just get all of the different materials for the different techniques out before you start painting. Plan the ones you want to use and have fun :)
Just completed this tutorial - probably took 6x longer than you (!) but loved it and the result is great 👍. Amazing technique for creating such realistic dandelion clocks - big thanks 🙏😁
That's wonderful Chris, so pleased you had a go at this one! It is such a nice painting to do! I loved painting it! I am so glad yours turned out well! Yeah!
This was so helpful. I really get discouraged with masking fluid. The way you used the stencil brush to lighten and then used the white gouache was awesome. I like that you went over the dandelions with the gouache several times on the front dandelions. In the past I have seen that white gouache is not opaque and you need to let it dry and then go over it again until you achieve the white you desire. Thank you so much.
Thank you very much for sharing your video, I learn quite a bit from it , since I am very much beginner in watercolour art. My favourite plant, flower, or herb, is dandelion. Every spring, I look with great anticipation to see, the first blooms of this beautiful clever plant. Thank you, you put a smile on my face. I Absolutely adore your painting, and the ease you describe the process 😘
Thank you so much for your lovely message I am delighted that you are learning from my videos especially as you are a beginner. I too love dandelions, and you are right they are such a clever plant. I’m glad I put a smile on your face and happy that you love painting in watercolour along with my videos and find the description helpful. Happy painting, take care :-)
Karen, love your techniques, the way you build colour with the 1or 2 original colours , the scraping of the trees...& your clear guidance as you develop the painting...eager to do this painting, thanks, Jasmine
Thank you so much Jasmine for your lovely comment, I am delighted that you found the video useful especially the use of limited colours and the scraping back of trees etc... Good luck with having a go at this painting… Take care :-)

Glad you are liking your black velvet brushes. I have been using them for about 4 years, but find that they break down (that is the bristles appear to break) when using them on their side (as you are doing here), so have actually had to repurchase the ones I use the most (8, 10, 12). While they were new they performed well! The smaller ones are fine - but I don't use those in the same way. This is a lovely painting - will try today. Thank you! Stay safe xoxo
Thank you so much for your comment Fiona and for sharing your experience of the black velvet brushes. I know when I’ve used my sable brushes in the past the points seem to wear out! We do put these poor brushes through their paces! So glad that you like the painting of the dandelions, good luck with having a go… Take care :-)
Loved this tutorial it gave me hours of fun thank you! I was really pleased with results except for the sky! Lots still to learn but love your videos thank you ! ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️

I’ll try to reproduce this landscape with dandelions as soon as possible, I can’t wait!!! Thank you so much for your message Lucia, so glad you like my tutorials and find them helpful. It is all about the practice, enjoy painting the dandelions! Happy painting :)

really enjoyed this tutorial Karen as i have been so admiring the dandelions this year. i’ve been stuck in my painting habit during this lockdown but this piece of the flower heads has inspired me and i am going to give it a go. I’ve run out of masking fluid and i have a new tube a Daniel Smith green gold so i shall have some fun......

Very nice ❤️ The black velvet series from silver brush are excellent, some of my favourite brushes, I use them too for my paintings. They tend to loose their hair a bit, not systematically though, and it’s more like the hair « breaks » rather than getting off from where it is attached so it’s no big deal really. I noticed that it happens more often on the flat range rather than the round range. But it does happen here and there on the larger sizes of the round range (8 to 12). Overall they are amazing brushes I highly recommend them too. 👍

really enjoyed this tutorial Karen as i have been so admiring the dandelions this year. i’ve been stuck in my painting habit during this lockdown but this piece of the flower heads has inspired me and i am going to give it a go. I’ve run out of masking fluid and i have a new tube a Daniel Smith green gold so i shall have some fun......
Thank you Isabel for your comment and I’m delighted that the video has inspired you to paint some dandelions! The Daniel Smith green gold will be beautiful for this! Happy painting :-)
