I know what you mean. Me too. I had to put my art work away as I didn't get any support from parents. In the end I actually married an artist and he has been so supportive. But abstracts always seemed like a cop out. Except that they are not. I've sent off for some card stock, and I am going to make some of these and sell them on the internet. So happy.

    Hi, Karen 😊
Lately I've been given hints to try this style of painting~
I'm a realistic painter and I normally paint on silk. I was a watercolorist for over 25 years and a pastelist for 17 years. I've been a silk painter now for 9 years now. What's funny is that silk painting is almost exactly like watercolor!
Anyways, I'm going to try this way of painting to learn how to play. Painting has always been very stress-filled for me. I'm wanting to change that. I'm starting with your ideas! I have to admit - and I know it sounds odd, lol - but I'm nervous and scared! I don't know why, but I have an 💡 or 💡💡, 😏.
BTW, a really "spaterific" tool to use for great spatters is a toothbrush. Both an old used one and a brand new toothbrush bought just for this works. I found that the new one worked better for me and I liked its output more than the old, used one.
Thanks again! 😃 sorry this is so very long 😅 lol!

    • @KarenRiceArt
      @KarenRiceArt  Год назад

It could be your are not rinsing your brush between washes. Try to do this when you switch to a new colour. I also tried to make sure your painting is completely dry before you paint another layer, wet and dry on top. This will prevent muddying et cetera. Hope this is helpful.

I made 3 sets of these cards. I wasn’t thrilled with most of the panels on the third set and found a great way repurpose them. Using a die cut machine with standalone flower-shaped dies, I used the painted panels as the cutting material. The die-cut flowers are gorgeous! I’m planning another set of abstract panels in shades of green for die-cutting leaf and sprig shapes and will then assemble various pieces to create greeting cards. So fun!

What a wonderful process for watercolors, especially for people like myself who are petrified to pick up a paint brush. I created two sets of abstracts yesterday, and today my friend, who is a true artist, came to my home and we each painted another set. So fun to work alongside someone else who has different sensibilities around creating art with paint. My friend embellished with Tombow brush pens. We also used a toothbrush for splattering. For some panels that had dead spaces, I went in with a watercolor pencil and brushed in little starbursts of color to create a more complete look. This process is addictive and I plan to make one more set tomorrow while all my art toys are still spread out over the dining table. Thank you Karen for the inspiration🙏🏼

Thanks for the tutorial…….. my background washes always seem to be over done and dark…. Not interesting! This one has motivated me to sit down right now and do the background card exercise! Thanks again for all of your help ,,,👩‍🎤

I’ve always loved abstract, especially watercolor. There are so many things one can “see” within the pieces. It wakes up one’s imagination❤

I’ve never done abstract before and loved doing this so much. It was the colours that drew me to your video. Now I’m hooked. Thank you so much 😊. It’s so freeing

Have you talked about your "table set up" . . . are the different shaped shelving (?) ready made or something you designed yourself??

Hi Cathy, I purchased the shelving from Amazon. I have not yet talked about my table set up... good topic for a future video. Here is a link to the shelves: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07G9Z8MQQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Out of curiosity, why did you use hot press instead of cold press? I love both, but am just wondering. ❤

I just like to experiment with different paper surfaces. Press gives you a lot more detail. A rough surf is much more texture etc…

W aTching you work your magic was inspirational! I have just started using watercolours, I’ve always enjoyed making craft things , from Christmas tree decorations to soft furnishings! From 2020 til now I have had 8 strokes which left my vision Im paired and my left side weak! In order to keep busy , I thoughpainting would help me pass the time being productive so I’m going to have a go at some abstract art as you make it look such fun Thank you for sharing your techniques I will try to keep updated. With your videos, God bless you… Tina👋🏿

By the way, it’s quite difficult to find good quality washi tape sticky enough. Most of washi tapes I have used allowed leaking of the colours and are not sticky enough to watercolour painting. Very fustrating! Any tips for finding good enough washi tape?

I've tried my hand on such cards 😊 Actually I finally hated the colors and some details didn't work as nice as in your video, probably because of the quality of my paints and pencils, but I finally sketched some shapes in black and white on that colorful mess, and it turned out quite pretty :)
