I’ve been “teaching myself” watercolor for the last handful of years. I’ve never, ever been drawn to abstract work, but after watching this video I felt absolutely driven to do it. Now I’m six little paintings richer! Well done! Thank you for the inspiration and instruction. :)
I know what you mean. Me too. I had to put my art work away as I didn't get any support from parents. In the end I actually married an artist and he has been so supportive. But abstracts always seemed like a cop out. Except that they are not. I've sent off for some card stock, and I am going to make some of these and sell them on the internet. So happy.
This was so useful. I’ve been trying to figure out the basics of how someone would go about abstract painting in watercolor and this is the best video ever, so informative and easy to understand. Thank you!!!!
I played around with Derwent inktense pencils and a water pen and finally bought the blocks. The permanence and deep colors opened up some new fun because you can then use other media and generally, it won't run or mix. Let them dry well. Isn't this great fun?
Sometimes you just never know what you can wind up with when throwing paint around. These all turned out so different and beautiful. Thank you for a fabulous tutorial!
What a wonderful process for watercolors, especially for people like myself who are petrified to pick up a paint brush. I created two sets of abstracts yesterday, and today my friend, who is a true artist, came to my home and we each painted another set. So fun to work alongside someone else who has different sensibilities around creating art with paint. My friend embellished with Tombow brush pens. We also used a toothbrush for splattering. For some panels that had dead spaces, I went in with a watercolor pencil and brushed in little starbursts of color to create a more complete look. This process is addictive and I plan to make one more set tomorrow while all my art toys are still spread out over the dining table. Thank you Karen for the inspiration🙏🏼
I made 3 sets of these cards. I wasn’t thrilled with most of the panels on the third set and found a great way repurpose them. Using a die cut machine with standalone flower-shaped dies, I used the painted panels as the cutting material. The die-cut flowers are gorgeous! I’m planning another set of abstract panels in shades of green for die-cutting leaf and sprig shapes and will then assemble various pieces to create greeting cards. So fun!
I never would say I love abstracts but I heard you say something. “Move with feeling”your pencil. But I pray as I Paint and I can’t wait to pray and pain abstract.
Love this for card making. So conducive to creating a one of a kind cards. I’ve been selling cards as “Framable Art Cards”. A card plus a gift of art. Sometimes I include a frame to be wrapped as the gift.
Such a great idea for creating several cards while experimenting and practicing painting at the same time! Karen, I love your creativity and enthusiasm for making watercolor fun! You are a fantastic teacher! Thank you!
I know you just somehow fling paint about & scratch & spatter & plonk & scrape, but you truly have magic in those molecules as they do turn out looking so interesting & beautiful. And your techniques do help others create magic too.
I'll give it a go!!! Also will show my granddaughters so they can share in the adventure!!! No rules needed in watercolor anyway but these were just beautiful! Thank 😊 you Karen! Enjoy your weekend! A California Gramma ♥️
I’ve never done abstract before and loved doing this so much. It was the colours that drew me to your video. Now I’m hooked. Thank you so much 😊. It’s so freeing
Lovely technique dividing the sheet into individual rectangles. I’ve been painting watercolours for 43 years and started with smaller sheets of paper. Great way to learn new techniques without wasting costly watercolour paper. Enjoy your cosy presentation style
Hello Karen, i love this technique, you are so good at teaching in your clear and gentle manner. I thoroughly enjoyed this video...thankyou. Cant wait to give this a go.🙂
Hi Karen! That was so much fun to watch. What I loved about it all was how you sort of give us that sense of just going for it and not be afraid to just let go. What’s the worst that can happen? I love making cards with different medias and I’m so excited to create my own designs. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent with us. I love all of your videos. Nice to see the beautiful face behind the art. ❤️❤️❤️
Love your comment Karen, it made me smile this morning. I really am glad you found this helpful and inspiring. I really hope you enjoy creating your own cards - have fun 😊
I was very inspired by this. Thank you. I just recently bought some watercolor crayons because I just never felt comfortable with my watercolor pencils nor my tin of hard little square watercolors. I will be trying out all of these techniques and maybe even thinking up a few of my own. My grown daughter has been artistically talented since a very young age and in middle school her art teacher invited me to her home and gave me one intensive art lesson so that I "would fully appreciate my daughter's world and talent". She thought it would help me understand the way my daughter looked at the world. And it did! I am forever thankful to her for her kindness. There was no internet back then! How lucky we are now.
Hello Karen, Thank you for these really helpfull videos. I´m from Bavarian,, and my school days are 30 Years ago now. I find your english so good and clear and easy to understand.
Thank you. I am so glad to find someone else who does this. I had not thought about unique tools, thank you. Great ideas! The one that didn't work looks like a few things, even a village on the sea. I could see it cut down or left. These were lovely! Hugs❤
What a fun tutorial! I often get too precious about a painting way too soon. I think what you've shown me here will help me play and experiment more. And I too LOVE making cards and sending them to friends! Thank you!!!
I really like the bottom middle one. It looks like a road going under a very stormy sky, pe3rhaps the beginning of a hurricane. Really like this idea, I would never have thought of doing this. Thanks so much.
I watched this video a bit more than a year ago. And watched it again! It's still inspiring. I love the license you give us to "play" and to select the paintings we like and learn from the "good" and the "bad," alike. Maybe even more lessons from the ones we don't love...
Karen, I don't paint in the abstract form often, but after seeing this tutorial, I'm going to make an exception. It was fun seeing these paintings come to life and seeing how some shapes (which in the beginning looked like fish in the sea) changed into something different. The entire process was entertaining and informative. I love how you introduced the salt, cling wrap, and brusho into your creation. They do make quite lovely cards. Thank you for sharing your talent.
I love the way you did these cards up from the one large design, (1 but not truly 1). Gives me ideas for colour choices as indicators of occasions! E.g. pastels behind Easter items, etc. Thank you!
I'm already a card-maker, using stamps, inks and other mediums but I do love to dabble in freehand watercolor as well! I've played around a little with small abstract paintings but this tutorial makes me want to run into my stamp room this very minute and make a panel!! What a great video with great tips and amazing results! Thanks so much! Can't wait to poke around your channel to see how else you'll inspire me! :D
Thank you so much! I am so pleased that you enjoyed this tutorial. For more exclusive and in-depth tutorials why not think about joining my Patreon membership. www.patreon.com/karenriceart
This is so fun and freeing. I used some of my shimmery Iridescent watercolors in some of mine such as Danial Smith's Iridescent Blue Silver and that turned out very pretty.
I’ve missed your videos. Love them so much. I took a break from art for a bit. Ready to start again. Thank you. By the way you look like your becoming younger every time I watch a video. Beautiful Talented Lady. 🎨👩🎨🖌
W aTching you work your magic was inspirational! I have just started using watercolours, I’ve always enjoyed making craft things , from Christmas tree decorations to soft furnishings! ........ Also, I spend an absolute fortune on buying art print cards in box sets of my favourite artists, usually from Museums and Gallery shops. I will save my money and do my own cards in the future. My area is portraiture but I love love love creating abstracts in multimedia just for fun and to colour mix or loosen up. Thanks for the inspo 👍
Don't often comment but just had to this time Karen, I LOVE making watercolor cards and these are just super, more like this please.! SOOOO YUMMY! You are a wonderful teacher, I am always inspired after watching your tutorials, thanks for all that you do.
Karen so happy I came across your video, having not done paintings in watercolour for quite sometime now mainly acrylic and oils. I am feeling so inspired by your post which you have explained so beautifully , encouraged to watercolour paintings once again. Thank you so much for sharing, I just have to say you have the most beautiful blue eyes❤️🌹
I made a lot of water color cards last summer by starting with abstract backgrounds then using botanical themed dies to die cut shapes to arrange on a card. I found that even “bright white “ watercolor paper still looks off white against a white card stock background so I ended up using off white paper for my base cards, it works well except for any scene related to the ocean where you expect white ( white sky). I also definitely recommend testing your washi tape on an old scrap of watercolor paper if you want to make sure there is no bleed through to get clean white edges. This was a super fun excercise, thank you so much! ❤
Thank you so much for the suggestion! I can't wait to give this a try as I am in a process of reviewing my art, why I paint, what it means and where I am going. I can use this as part of this process whilst creating some neat little cards for my family! Love it! 🥰 xx
Hi Karen, I just finished making a video of me following your tutorial. My cards are beautiful and I of course references you repeatedly. You are a wonderful teacher. Cheers from Vancouver Island.

Really nice tutorial. I must say that some of those individual paintings feel like they're giving a nod to Kandinsky with their colours and shapes and movement. Thanks for a fab class!
Hello from Canada and what a lovely video! I dabble in watercolors but have been reluctant to tackle abstract, what a great idea for cards. However I'm not familiar with 'washy' tape. We probably have the same thing but by another name. Would it be masking tape, painters tape or a different product? Thanks for this great idea.
So pleased you enjoyed the abstract card painting tutorial. I’ve always loved abstract, especially watercolor. There are so many things one can “see” within the pieces. It wakes up one’s imagination❤
I totally agree 😊
This was so useful. I’ve been trying to figure out the basics of how someone would go about abstract painting in watercolor and this is the best video ever, so informative and easy to understand. Thank you!!!!
Thank you Olivia, so glad it was helpful😊
I love your ideas of incorporating watercolour pencils etc. to regular watercolours.
Glad you like them!
Thank you so much 😊

Karen the one you didn't think worked, I could see a wonderful soaring bird above a lake. Gorgeous.
Wow! Thank you for sharing!!
Sometimes you just never know what you can wind up with when throwing paint around. These all turned out so different and beautiful. Thank you for a fabulous tutorial!
Abstracts are in the eye of the beholder! They’re all beautiful.
What a wonderful process for watercolors, especially for people like myself who are petrified to pick up a paint brush. You are a natural presenter Karen and your abstracts make me think of super-modernist stained glass windows. Dynamic and vibrant. Simply beautiful.

Hello Karen, Thank you for these really helpfull videos. I´m from Bavarian,, and my school days are 30 Years ago now. I find your english so good and clear and easy to understand.
Very inspiring! Everyone can see something different in them. I saw a blue sun, a river stream, a sail and a green whirlpool.

That was FUN!!! I don’t usually paint abstract, and have been trying to paint more loose…this was the ticket to loosen up! LOVED IT!!
Thank you 😊
Saw some techniques that are new to me...sanding coloring pencils and painting with the tiny piece of card. THANK YOU for sharing your craft!
Thank you so much :-)
I really like the bottom middle one. It looks like a road going under a very stormy sky, pe3rhaps the beginning of a hurricane. Really like this idea, I would never have thought of doing this. Thanks so much.
A touch of white really makes the painting stands out and feel like there are lots of details to look into❤

Karen so happy I came across your video, having not done paintings in watercolour for quite sometime now mainly acrylic and oils. Thank you so much for sharing, I just have to say you have the most beautiful blue eyes❤️🌹
Thank you so much ☺️
Very enjoyable to watch. Will be making some soon.
Have fun 😀
LOVE LOVE LOVE your tutorial - thank you 😊
I made a lot of water color cards last summer by starting with abstract backgrounds then using botanical themed dies to die cut shapes to arrange on a card. ❤
Great suggestions, thank you so much for sharing :)
Thank you so much for the suggestion! I can't wait to give this a try as I am in a process of reviewing my art, why I paint, what it means and where I am going. I can use this as part of this process whilst creating some neat little cards for my family! Love it! 🥰 xx
Wonderful! So pleased with his was helpful 😊
I tried this abstract technique. So much fun! Thankful for sharing your talent!
Marvelous! 👏👏👏
Fabulous. Having a go next week at art class
Have fun 😊
It is pure fun to look and listening and then paint! Uiuiui, fine result by myself.Thank you so much , it's lovely!🥰🧚🍀🙏
Thank you so much 😊
These are great. A fun idea if you are putting white borders on white card is to cut a colored piece slightly larger than the painting for contrast.
Great tip! Thank you 😊
So pretty!
Thank you! 😊
Love love love this! Can’t wait to get started on my abstracts. ❤
Have fun!!
Hi Karen, I just finished making a video of me following your tutorial. My cards are beautiful and I of course references you repeatedly. You are a wonderful teacher. Cheers from Vancouver Island.
Thank you so much! Really pleased you enjoyed this tutorial and your cards turned out so well! Yay!
How fun! These turned out so beautiful! Love the colors and the use of so many different techniques.

Wow I was inspired by your Abstract tutorial
Thank you!
A fine mesh metal tea strainer works well for making powder of watercolor pencil.
I actually really like the last one you showed that you said "didn't work out". I think it did
Thanks for sharing that. I’m pleased that you like that last one.
Dankeschön für diese schöne Idee 🎉🎉🎉🙏👍
