Love this method of a practice tutorial before going into a whole painting. It's really helpful having the info on timing, pressure, uses, etc.. As a beginner there's so much to take in, but this is so helpful to know how to practice the techniques before committing to a full painting.
Adding paint into existing pans to use neat with card....now that tip was worth the entire video! I couldn't figure out, when painting neat, how to make sure I wasn't leaving paint on a palette. And all the card info was so helpful and inspiring. Thank you very much.
Love love love this technique! I've only tried this once using one of your tutorials as inspiration and was so pleased! Can't wait to play further. Karen, thank you SO MUCH for sharing your talent and amazing ideas here!
I have packed my card to go with me on my trip to Italy, and although I've watched you use yours in other tutorials, I love this timely reminder. I do love all the things you can do with it. It's a much better use of it than running up bills, don't you think? 😅
This is by far the most helpful video on this use of a card to create different looks. I can't thank you enough for your practical video. I love it truly.💓
I so love your tutorials as you are fearless using new techniques such as the cards, the twig, salt etc. I always feel energized and eager to try my hand as well. Bravo and thank you
Your plastic card techniques speak to my impressionistic side. Can’t wait to try some of these and watch more of your tutorials from the plastic card playlist. Thank you for posting. 🙏💙🌵🌵🌵
Better paper produces better results for some techniques. I have some cheap brushes and less expensive paints but it seems good paper is what matters most. Thank you Karen. You are a natural teacher.

Karen, I have been making custom tools from polycarbonate and plexiglass in different shapes for scraping and making lines and also to make mountains similar to a painting knife but my own design. I sent two of them to andrew broussard and he used them in some of his recent videos if you want to go see them. One is a triangle shape with three different edges and one is a rectangle with about sixty degree cuts on both ends to make lines , digs, scrapes and things. I know these card things are free but the ones i made are more personal and designed with special angles and edges to be a more useful tool.
Excellent Karen! 👌Thank you very much for sharing all those techniques and inspiring us to paint looser. I am enjoying a lot watching your videos🙏 Greetings from Portugal
Iv been painting with water colour for years so it's nice to try something a bit different,I used to paint loose and let the paint run but went off it,time to have another look at my work, thank you ☺
I love your little scissors. I did put an expired card in with my watercolors a few weeks ago, but couldn't decide if I wanted to cut it up and haven't played with it yet. So this video was great timing. I avoid buildings, I'm never happy with how they look, but I may give it a go now.
Thank you Nicole... I purchased it on Amazon a couple of years ago, looks a little vintage. So pleased this tutorial has come at the right time... Yay! I hope you have a little more success with buildings using the plastic card technique... Have fun practicing 😊
I've tried this before quite a while ago & I couldn't get it to work well, Karen, but you've explained it so well in this tutorial, I'm confident to have another go. Thanks. 😊
Thank you! I love your style. I will be trying this technique. I’ll have to reign in my urge to gouge into the paper though. 😂 I’m autistic and sometimes sensory activities overpower whatever other activity I may be doing, such as painting. Thanks again for such an in depth look at how to use this technique.
Superb tips Karen - you have created some amazing art with the card! I am wondering if there would be any under sea/beneath the waves applications …? The salt could come in for sure!

Wow, after seeing your accomplished works, I realize I really need to practice more with this technique. Proper paint consistency and water ratio is key. But that is true of all techniques! What I love about your other examples is that they look so textured and have so many areas of interest. When I click on the playlist for other like tutorials in the description, , I get a message that it does not exist. 🙁
Thank you so much. Really pleased you found this tutorial helpful. I’m not sure about what links you mean in the description for tutorials? If you go to my homepage you can click on the playlists there. Hope this is helpful and that you enjoy my other tutorials.
@@KarenRiceArt Thanks ever so much for the speedy reply! I meant in the video description, under "Plastic Card Playlist", the list does not exist. I am able to see playlists from your home page, and will search that.
*curious about a few related(ish) topics...one being using fountain pen inks for washes as there are some very beautiful inks that have either shimmer or sheen qualities and the other being somewhat experimental of treating the back of the watercolor paper with a light treatment/saturation/spray of alum which is used in marbling...i was thinking that it could produce some unique effects as it reacts to the front of the paper and the other pigments being utilized...in fact some Suminagashi techniques applied to the front and then painting wet onto dry might be interesting*
@@KarenRiceArt *there are sites here that will sell samples of the inks they carry fairly inexpensively so you can try them out before committing to an entire bottle my favorite so far (goulet pens) has over 800 inks (don't have quite that many in my collection just yet) and many of them are stunningly beautiful...intended for fountain pens and impressive signatures they also shade pretty well on the right paper*
I love watching your videos! This is such an interesting and fun technique. I am wondering about how long you need wait to start to create the rocks with the card, especially if your paper is dry. One or two minutes? I’m sure a little longer if wet? Thank you, I appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks for all your videos Karen.. so informative. I've tried this technique a couple of times and wondered if you have any tips/tricks for repairing areas of paintings where I've gone 'scratch Happy' i. e can they be slightly blurred or lightly covered/filled? I tried salt with some success. Thanks in advance.
Thank you Toni... scratching the paper is permanent. You could use oil or soft pastels are good to cover or spatter over the top. Try not to scratch the paper and overwork and area. Easy said than done I know.
Dear Karen, you don't know how much you've helped me with this fantastic tutorial !!! Thanks a lot and have a day full of blessings...

I use these cards a lot too. Couldn’t make a birch tree without them.
