I love how you’ve gradually built up the layers and created the misty effect, beautiful. Thank you for showing how to achieve that and produce a great picture
You are a very talented artist. Very much appreciate your step by step method and especially that you name the hues you are using as well the brushes you use. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Regards Annie
What a beautiful build up of your layers, washes, midtones, hazy and sharper details. I could feel how involved you were at each step and had the perfect balance of control and serendipity... Thank You 🙏🏽
Makes me want to take a walk there. Beautiful. As a self-taught intermediate watercolorist, I’ve learned a lot from your video. TYSM for sharing your talent. ❤
I’ve just had an epiphany: I haven’t been varying my mix enough in my paintings. I suspect that doing so will elevate the landscapes that, up to now, have felt a bit blah- for lack of a better way to describe it. Thank you for demonstrating your techniques so generously.
One of those videos that teaches us a lot more than a book can ever do. If anyone was looking at the gate at the end, thinking it's not quite right and wanting to charge in some dark paint before you actually did it, it's a sign that they're learning.
Thanks, Sewall. Well remembered !! It is a versatile technique. I think I mentioned in the video, that it’s great for misty / atmospheric effects. Glad you liked it
Thanks Jim. I picked up the term when I briefly worked as a painter decorator. The first coat of paint on fresh plaster was sometimes called the ghost wash, it stuck with me !!
I absolutely agree with what you said about brushstrokes vs. repetitive vertical lines. An abundance of foreground or mid ground grasses take me right out of the landscape, but a variety of brushstrokes and layers-I could walk forever in that bit of country. Glad you popped into my feed; very much enjoyed it. New subscriber. :)
This is just wonderful. The painting looks like a morning where the night prior was coated in mist and the sun is halfway through burning off the morning fog. A lovely video and it's very interesting to see the techniques of dry-brushing and ghost washing within one work. =) Subscribed!
Lovely Stephen! I agree that the soft brush strokes that blend to form the foliage are much nicer than strands of grass. The ghost wash is a must try for me. Thank-you so much for the interesting tutorial❤
Extraordinary...technique, color, wash, softness. I'm off to my studio to try and use these! Very good teaching-easily understood. Thank you, Christopher Steven!
This was a lovely way to start my morning. I really love your technique and easy way of expressing what you are doing. The colors you used and mixed for this painting were so perfect with just the right amounts of color to make this glow! Terrific tutorial 🤗👍👍 I definitely am a subscriber now🩷
I really like this tutorial. I love this ghost wash. I've always wondered how that misty look is done. Thank you so much. By the way that open gate makes me so curious I can see myself walking in to see what's in there. Love it! I also like that you mention the paints you are mixing it's a great help. And also the tip about broken lines in the trees giving the illusion of light shining through. Great tutorial I really enjoyed this and learned a lot from.it. God bless you and thank you so much Christopher. Susan.
I just love this and how you teach. I have been watching and not painting much lately. You just gave the inspiration to go out and paint!!! Thank you!! Subscribed!!
Wonderful demonstration. When I see a woodland/rural scene similar to your photo I just have no idea where to start - until now! Thank you for such a detailed description of your techniques and what a beautiful result :)
I had given up watercolors in frustration… but your video is so inspiring…. I’m inspired to get out my supplies and give it another try. You make it look so simple ……..and enjoyable…….instead of the struggle I have always found watercolors to be.
Extremely helpful explanation and demo. Using spray bottle, varying mixes and strokes, help me better understand moving from underpainting to final details.
Very beautiful painting. I love the ghost wash, also how you explain all the different layers from light to dark values. There are so many valuable techniques in this tutorial. Thank you so much. 😍
Thank you for such a rich and explanatory tutorial. To me, this painting is ALL about learning to capture country watercolour scenes using the simple steps proving rich content. I'd be interested in the three types of brushes you used. One looks like a large Raphael.. ? Many thanks and looking forward to more from you in the future
This is so beautiful to watch...I hav always wanted to try loose watercolours ( I like to paint details such as in leaves, shells etc ) but have always wanted to try this style... a huge Thanku for thos tutorial, 😊😉👏 x
