Guard lets you interrupt an enemy activation after an action, and lets you choose overwatch, point blank overwatch, or fight in combat. It isn't just another term for overwatch. It also doesn't require you to have fewer models to use.
I may have expressed myself poorly, but I know - the point remains they've taken a new rule (if you have fewer models and have run out of activations you can reactivate an appropriate one for a shoot action) and called it *overwatch*, whereas the new action *guard* is, to all intents and purposes, pretty much what overwatch is in other games (take an action with model during, and in response to, an enemy model's activation).
I don’t know if you know the tier rankings, but most people think that the Dwarfs are lower to mid tier, while the beastmen are considered broken/S tier
Personally, I don't care in the slightest about rankings, but the beastmen are certainly a tough nut to crack! 🤣
Love your videos. Great overview/impressions at start. If they had decent availability I would have bought this as my first kill team set alas gameworkshop I think reserving so much production for 10th edition I think they under produced this by a long margin.
They're certainly releasing a lot of stuff recently - 2 Kill Team sets, a Warcry set, and 10th edition. Whew. Thanks for the kind words!
With regard to the hearthkyn, including the other two available gunner options will be a huge boon. Even though it will only help your shooting and not the melee, it will help quite a lot having the rocket launcher or plasma or sniper in addition to the laz-rotor gun.
Great video and bat rep
Good idea! Should have thought of that before I built my minis ...
You don't need all 4 box sets, you can sell off the other two or just buy Killzone: Gallowdark upgrade kits. Looks like I missed out on the Shadowvault upgrades, though :(
Indeed!
I love the look of those painted walls. Of all these miniature games you play Kill Team interests me the most as it’s such a smaller scale that full 40k.
You've never played a skirmish-level game before? I highly recommend you do, there are many, many good ones to choose from!
@@EsotericOrderGamers I haven’t, well unless you consider gaslands a form of a skirmish level game. I love that one. I’ve watched you for years and enjoyed your battle reports and everything but the barrier to entry always seems so high with this style of game. Gaslands intrigued me when the book first came out because I could build it all myself which I loved doing and I know he’s got frost something which is similar in that you build your own models but I never got into that one either. But kill team almost gets me whenever I see it.
@@aowoodworks2408 Yeah, Gaslands is certainly a skirmish level game, at least compared to mass battle games. Small number of units, high personalisation, that kind of thing. It's a great game and I highly recommend you check out my two interview with the author Mike Hutchinson, AND my battle report of his new mass battle system Hobgoblin! Frostgrave is by a different author. But in the case of those 'indie' games, you can use and personalise any models you have.
I must admit I completely missed talking about the price issue in this video - only because it really does make me sound like a broken record after a while, we all know GW's products are extremely expensive. However one thing playing more KT has taught me is that you can get a LOT of gameplay out of one set. Just because they're constantly releasing new product doesn't mean you have to get it all. Remember however these 'expansion' sets don't have the rulebook, but the basic rules are available from GW (and my rules & reference on my website).
@@EsotericOrderGamers I love your rules summaries. By barrier to entry I’m not necessarily referring to cost although that is a factor, more though I’m just thinking of the time and dedication it would take to assemble, paint and learn the rules for something like 40k. It can be such a huge game where Kill Team is a more manageable size and cost. Seems easier to bite off. I play and have a collection of a little over 100 board games so learning complex rules isn’t normally something that intimidates me but 40k always has for whatever reason but still looks fun. I love painting when I get into it so I’m sure I’d like it but again it just seems too big unlike KT. My other issue is I don’t get a lot of 2 player game nights as usually there’s 3 of us so a skirmish game isn’t often something that would hit the table.
I did paint and play through the original campaign of Imperial Assault and I heard its skirmish mode is pretty good but I never tried it. Maybe I should start there.
@@aowoodworks2408 Miniatures games tend to demand pretty high investments in time and money, they're more of a hobby. I'd still call Imperial Assault a boardgame - anything played on a board or on tiles I'd mostly call a boardgame. Miniatures games have more freedom and are played on a tabletop with terrain and tape measures. But really, they're all fun, whatever you enjoy. Check out my battle reports to see a wide range of games in action so you can decide what to try out!
Did you paint all of that? Looks amazing.
Yes I did - thanks!
Those new beastmen look so good, I'm just sad that 40K gets more new beasts than my actual Beasts of Chaos army.
That's not fair at all!
Regarding balance in Gallowfall…
These Beastmen are going to be hard to deal with in Into the Dark. On an open board, Votann will do much better.
The further I can stay away from those beastmen the more it suits me! 😆
Good to hear that your feelings about KT ‘21 mirror my own. It is hands down the best (tight, balanced and promotes compelling in-game decision making) miniatures ruleset GW has released this millennia.
However, GW does have a game that supersedes it by a nose… Underworlds. Admittedly, Underworlds is a boardgame, not a miniature game. So I’m curious to know your thoughts on Underworlds if you’ve played it.
Underworlds is good, but as you say, a very different game. I've played it several times but it hasn't quite clicked for me, probably because it's geared more towards constant play, getting to know the cards etc, rather than casual play.
@@EsotericOrderGamers When did you try Underworlds? The recent shift by GW to focus on Rivals (no deck-building) and Nemesis (limited deck-building) over the last year or so has lessened the need to constantly be playing. I think it is filled with so many delicious decision points given that one has only 12 activations to achieve one's objectives.
And tell me, seeing as you likely have played a wider array of games than I... how unique is Underworlds. In my 40 years of gaming (excluding RPGs), I have encountered only one other game (Middle Earth CCG) that allows the player to decide what it is that scores one victory. The deck-building of one's objective deck adds a fascinating element to Underworlds.
An interesting (if repetitive in terms of terrain) KT season. Shame that GW seem to want nobody to be able to buy it, other than from scalpers. I got two of the four boxes, but each new release sells out (at least in The UK) in under ten minutes on the prelaunch day. Many are then immediately on ebay and I'm never going to feed the vile profiteers on there. Good video though mate!
Yeah, I really don't understand the thinking behind that.
@@EsotericOrderGamers I like the idea that there's 'thinking'. The number of comments I've read this year about people turning away from Kill Team because they simply cannot find the boxes should be being picked up by GW. It is obvious they are losing sales and customers will go elsewhere. Plus (no offence!), they cannot be bought by the average gamer, but GW still send them to RUclipsrs to promote and they themselves keep promoting the pre-order when it's gone from their website in moments. It's idiotic.
@@LordTechnopants It is weird, that's for sure.
I'm surprised you enjoy Kill Team more than Warcry.
How does this compare in your rankings to Drowned Earth?
I can appreciate many people like ranking games and organising them in order of preference, but it's just not something I feel the need to do. Kill Team and Drowned Earth are very different games with very different styles, and I'll very happily play either of them depending on the mood I'm in. I don't consider one to be higher ranked than the other! As for Warcry, I really enjoy it's straightforward system too, but I haven't yet played with the new reaction mechanic - I intend to as soon as possible however, I'm busy painting the terrain from the new set right now!
@@EsotericOrderGamers that's fair - btw, love what you've done with the Gallowfall set (painting wise). Thanks for the wonderful content
I'll save Peter the pain of ranking competing systems; TDE over KT in my book any day. Lower financial barrier to entry, fewer rules to internalize, more whimsical scope for hobbying / personalization. Yes, yes i am unashamedly biased ;P
@@oneofmanyAndyRobertsons That's Andy's personal opinion by the way - I think they're both great, very different games and I really enjoy them both in different ways.
And actually, each of Andy's points could be challenged - with Kill Team you can get models and terrain and campaign in one box, whereas with TDE you might have to buy a whole table of new terrain along with your factions. The Kill Team rules are in reality much simpler than the Drowned Earth rules. And there's a huge amount of personalisation options in KT for building your own teams, and developing them through successful games. As much as I love TDE too, I think your one unsuccessful game of KT is blinding you to some facts my friend! 😃
Glad you're enjoying the channel Marco, be sure to check out the website! You'll find rules & reference sheets for both games there.
Ah, Peter, your level-headed impartiality does you credit! Whereas I'm ruled entirely by passion and an anti-GW bias (all my opinions should be prefaced with some sort of disclaimer)😅 I'm definitely open to being persuaded of the merits of the new KT one day...
As with Warcry, too much identical terrain. Solution: One Starter Set with rules and everything to play the game. Warbands in their own box and terrain like the Warcry terrain boxes. Maximum ease and fexibility for the customer.
Beatigor in 40k is not for me. Space-Dwarfs are more like Midgets and look silly. Packing all that stuff together with one or two sprues of amazing terrain is a lame GW tactic. I am happy with my Octarius stuff .. which I still have to paint, because of all the things GW churns out with FOMO tactics. Call me a disgruntled victim.
Not trying to put you on the spot, but... putting you on the spot:
Killteam, Warcry, or Necromunda?
Argh! 😆 All three. I know you want a ranking, but I play all 3 and will continue to play all 3 depending on what I feel like at the time. Of course I don't expect everyone has that luxury, so I will say that of the 3, Necromunda shows it's age a bit more as the system is somewhat over-complicated (it has hung onto its past, whereas KT and Warcry are newer, faster systems) - but it has the deepest campaign rules if you're into developing your gangs through successive games. Between KT and Warcry, I'd go with the theme you prefer; they're both great systems. They all have very fun, cinematic gameplay - check out my battle reports to see them in action.
Agreed about Necromunda, if only I had time for a campaign game…. On the brightside, at least alternating activations was added to N’17.
Warcry I find lackluster. It is a solid, beer n’pretzel game but lacks compelling decisions and thematic representation via the rules.
@@EsotericOrderGamers Amazing response, thank you! Warcry has been our main game, and the only game we have been investing hard on, having a blast with it. For us, it's the most streamlined and most fun game there is, other than Warhammer Underworlds (from GW, that is). Altough I do find Killteam and Necromunda to be BEAUTIFUL to look at, even then, I find their rules a little daunting. In Warcry, we don't need much to think about the rules, and more about focusing on the strategy at hand, our activations and turn order.
@@henryrodriguez6260 I aggree with you to a point on Warcry, but, it's not a completely brainless with absolutely NO compelling decisions. There are, various ways to go about it, and decisions really matter to win or lose a game. Bad decisions get to you lose a game entirely, so that alone goes to show how important it is. But I do see it's a much, much simpler game than the competition. Also, no thematic representation via the rules? Have you seen the abilities each warband get to do? Specially the newer ones? It is VERY thematic. Even more so the rules for Terrain. Bridges on Catacombs collapses and kills everyone on it, bamboo bridges get to be chopped off, bamboo fortifications gets you to throw those said-bamboos at range, hot mining structures spinning being enabled burning everyone around, and so on.
@@kraziel Which is how it should be! Necromunda can be clunky still, but KT isn't much harder than Warcry.
Triangle, square, circle for movement is beyond stupid, turning points, lol wise up.! Never mind all the other nonsense in this game and indeed most GW games. I HATE GW as a company, I love their models, and their games. I hate there pricing, not because it's expensive, which it is, but because it is totally immoral, beyond belief! I have bought loads of their stuff for years, I'm 60, but NEVER new!
Their games are very expensive, certainly, even more so in Australia and NZ. But I do tired of people equating their high prices with personal concepts of morality. This is a publicly-owned company that will charge as much as it can possibly get with and that people will continue to pay - 'morality' has nothing to so with it, especially so since they're selling games, not arms dealing. 😆
