Lars has the groove, feel, and the backbeat. It was also revealed in several interview, dating back to Jason Newsted, saying either directly or paraphrasing that Lars follows James. So, the “beat” and timing all goes through Lars, then to the other members. Jason said that Lars had a jumbo monitor just blasting James’ rhythm and vox. Jon Duplantier said that Lars’ in ears are the same and that James’ in ears basically has mostly James and some of the other members sprinkled in. So, if it sounds sloppy, that’s why. Lars has influenced everyone in modern metal. He’s not a bad drummer.

"You act like Lars sucks but then buy his albums" does he kinda ehh live? yes. is he fine in the studio? yes. just because one member isnt as good as the others doesnt mean i cant enjoy their music
If it seems like he is playing out of time it is caused by the the person filming being in a location with insufficient PA coverage, the result is you hear the reflections of the other elements of the PA system from around the venue, but you hear it much later than the direct sound from the drums. I've never seen anyone scrutinized as much as Lars. I get he's not the best person or drummer but he's really quite good. Put that much scrutiny on most and you'll find their fuck ups.
Remember Lars is playing with in-ears, and that the video is filmed from the stage, where the main PA comes in with a big delay after echoing from the stands. Of course they have stage monitors and the PA leaks a little audio on stage, but the delayed echo can still easily overpower the other, more direct sources of audio that the phone microphone is picking up. I'm not saying that Lars isn't at all sloppy with his playing, but I believe the effect is a bit exaggerated in the video.
I actually think this part is executed quite well. Its his approach and it works for me, quite unique. Dont really see sloppy playing here, this may come from the odd puppets riff itself.
No backing track, both kick drums are being used, and you can hear the correct cymbals being played. This guys doing a lot more work than most modern drummers do live!
Without Lars no Metallica. Who wants to pay that price. He writes, he improves guitar riffs, he makes them all rich and us a little poorer:) Lars ceo of metal.
While he does make arrangements and give suggestions on how to put riffs together and improve songs, he's more of a conducter than a composer. So to say that he writes is kind of a stretch.
All room-drummers spit on Lars and simply do not see that sometimes he plays the (unseen) right bassdrum instead of the left one. That is something many drummers do: alternate. That said, we know Lars, how he plays and approaches the live playing. Here he's doing his thing. Simply.
He's sixty and a multimillionaire! Be glad he still wants to play music they wrote when they were 19 and are still putting out new music whether you like it or not. One day we may only have a tribute band like with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

@@antimaxsmacks Ah yeah, lol that would explain it. Doh!
No one misses the strong beat like Lars!
Better than before this as now he started practicing more often.
I love how he goes in and out of time signature like jazz players do.
Not really what jazz players are known for. Improvising in a steady 4/4 beat is more like it. But this song has progressive rock elements like the 5/8 bar every 4 measures.
@@JackSon-cs5vk can u explain?
@@JackSon-cs5vk the verse has a 5/8 bar every four measures. Maybe you should take a music theory class.

Still a good drummer despite all the backlash he gets!
Playing in a arena is way different than people think especially at that volume level. Let alone the tempos they play and also the guitar players themselves rush or drag.
People aren’t machines even the worlds best drummers mess up. Just enjoy the show and stop being silly
I like his simplicity .. he plays what's called for.
I created a midi drumtrack for a demo once. I took a break for half an hour and when I came back, my 2 year old son left my computer with FL Studio open. It sounded exactly like this
He's 60. Pretty decent to be honest. After what he did in 80' as a beast drummer and always did as an excellent composer, he could play all the songs until the end of their days wrongly, that wouldn't matter. Lars is a true legend. I love him and I'm grateful for everything he done.
Say what you want about Lars’ drumming but man I’d give my left testicle to have an iconic drum part like in One to add to my résumé.
Lmao that is a ripoff from Dark Angel - Darkness Descends

Exactly.
Lars is a terrible drummer. James Hetfield himself has admitted that.
Lars is a good songwriter and had excellent business acumen. But as a drummer? Trash

@@Alexxf35if James Hetfield sought after a wonderful drummer you wouldn't even know James Hetfield is 😂
If it seems like he is playing out of time it is caused by the the person filming being in a location with insufficient PA coverage, the result is you hear the reflections of the other elements of the PA system from around the venue, but you hear it much later than the direct sound from the drums. He is not playing out of time, you are just hearing him first then the PA system later on.
I used to hear same thing with Paul from cannibal corpse. Not the most technical drummer but it’s not them without him. Same applies here and honestly, not bad at all.
He at least tries. Plus the guy has back problems. He may be a bit sloppy at times, but he serves the songs a lot better. He’s not playing fills all over the fucking place.

He might not be good but his arrangements have been light-years ahead of everyone that in the genre at that time
Yeah, no. Subpar arrangements and subpar drumming, you're too spunkblind to see it.
actually, I don't understand this type of videos
I don't understand why too many people want to bully that man and be that hurtful to him..
please keep in mind his age, that he made history with his band, and that he influenced many people during his career
And honestly I'm not that big lars or Metallica fan, but I just found it hurtful to keep catching his mistakes and publish it
0:16 where it starts to fuck up a bit. No drummer has ever played a song on that level that has never flubbed a random fill. Technically ir was recovered decently.
Finally someone realistic.
No backing track, both kick drums are being used, and you can hear the correct cymbals being played. This guys doing a lot more work than most modern drummers do live!
Haha
Saw the justice and black album tour they slayed !!!!
Lars peaked then
He's 60 years old and not fueled by alcohol, cocaine, and anger anymore. WTF do you expect.
You want to see old Lars live? Go watch a tribute band.
"ceo of metal"?

@@greaseball28 Wrong.
All room-drummers spit on Lars and simply do not see that sometimes he plays the (unseen) right bassdrum instead of the left one. That is something many drummers do: alternate. That said, we know Lars, how he plays and approaches the live playing. Here he's doing his thing. Simply.
They sound as good as James’ talk-singing voice.
Neither has sounded good since the early 90s.
Lars is the master of covering up his fuck ups and continuing the song. What a puppet.
He's sixty and a multimillionaire! Be glad he still wants to play music they wrote when they were 19 and are still putting out new music whether you like it or not. One day we may only have a tribute band like with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I’m convinced that Lars never set out to be a musician, he set out to be a rockstar.

I read, in an interview with him, that he didn't practice in his off time, and it shows.
What is holding Lars back are his Easton Ahead drum sticks, they are aluminium but heavier than wood. I used them for a while until I realized that I had power but no finesse. Ever since he's been using those sticks his playing is clumbsy.

I’m kind of extremely confused with what he’s doing with his left foot. At times, it looks like he’s playing the main kick beat with his left and at others, it looks like he’s just randomly feathering it.
He ain’t even drumming bad in this clip
I dont think he has anything to prove to any of these punks that think his drumming is trash, dude was a fucking monster in his prime, hes allowed to calm down on the drums alittle.

What makes it sound worst is the fact that you hear the PA a little later then his drums because the PA is further away. Probably why it sounds out of time.
