I grew up thinking Nick was the best, but after learning the drums, now I know he doesn’t compare to Gar’s drumming. I still love Nick and think that was the best lineup, but Gar was such a beast that knew how to work all the nuances and dynamics of the drums
Even Mustaine himself has hinted that Samuelson is his favorite drummer he’s worked with. When asked about Dirk a couple years ago during the recording of The Sick, one of the praises he sang was that playing with him was like playing with Gar.

Lars has a bit of that Ringo effect, where his sloppiness ends up becoming an integral part of the whole. It's like trying to imagine Megadeth with a better singer. I've heard bands cover Battery, Whiplash, Blackened and others with the drummer pulling it off perfectly, yet it doesn't really sound like Metallica. (That time they played with Lombardo and Jordison doesn't quite sound like Metallica either.)
Ringo isn't sloppy, he's actually very groovy, precise and creative. People who think Ringo is a bad drummer should change to another instrument (if they ever play one).
The reason for this is because of how much harder Dave and Joey hit compared with Lars, and Metallica’ Music catalog is not as complex or difficult as What the other drummers are used to playing, The both didn’t look as if they were trying to play the music identical to the way Lars would have played them, instead they seemed more interested in just having fun with this moment…

Or the intro to "ticket to ride" where there's a little tardiness to his beating the toms, and it doesn't sound right of you try to play it right on the beat. For me that's not bad drumming, but part of the flavour that makes Ringo stand out. Now Lars he does have similar things he does most drummers wouldn't (like hitting cymbals on beat 2 instead of 1), but yeah he's also prone to rushing or dragging his beat, yet over time that has become part of the Metallica sound, even James et Al have learned to play with it

@papai-by3bo i just told you to go look at his work in his previous band are you restarted and yes he can play double bass, go listen to Mission to Mars and We'll Be Back, off of his first contribution to a Megadeth album Also, Gar and Dirk both have much more complex training than Dave lol. Both Gar and Dirk had rigorous jazz training for years (Gar played in a jazz fusion band for nearly a decade), while Dave has had a few short-lived lessons here and there and is mostly self-taught outside of that. That's reflected in his fills, Dave's most famous fills often don't use kicks to mix it up. Non-thrash drummers like Eloy and Joey can do that easily

I know a lot of people listen to Lars' isolated tracks and cringe, but man, while he wasn't the best he definitely had personality on the drums. He's an integral part of why the band has been so successful. That being said, I'll take Dave Lombardo for my dream team.
Say what you want about Lars, but no one can say that he didnt have a hand in making Thrash Metal what it was, and is today. He was definitely a catalyst to James Hetfield's riffs.
Lars wrote some epic drum parts to some genre defining songs. But he could barely play them even when he was in his prime. Comparing him to other drummers is whats silly, if you ask me, not critiquing his performances. His performances are what either makes or breaks the songs. And when he’s on his game - nobody on earth sounds like him. He doesn’t really have a defined style or technique, yet he really does when you try and emulate his performances.
@papai-by3bo I actually do know drumming and can play myself and know that Lars did his own drumming on the justice ⚖️ album. Not to mention that he was phenomenal in his prime. All this can be seen from the Cliff era in all their live performances and just after he died in late 1986 and 1987. I'll agree that from 1988 onwards he started taking creative liberties 🗽 which didn't always best serve the songs but that wasn't from a lack of ability to play the songs as written as he wasn't doing anything more or less complicated, just different. Also, Dave Lombardo is fast and has superb mastery of double kick drumming but he lacks in creativity as all his beats follow a similar formula. Just fast and thrashy and he tends to overplay in slower songs, whereas Lars does what best serves the songs. This is evident when you see how he approaches a song like Mama Said or Nothing Else Matters in comparison to how he approaches Dyers Eve, Damage Inc, or Trapped Under Ice. I couldn't imagine Dave being able to give a song like Mama Said or Nothing Else Matters the right treatment.
@papai-by3bo what are you Talking about? I've heard South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss from start to finish and apart from a few moments here and there, the albums did nothing for me. Also, recording a song in separate parts and multiple takes is a pretty normal part of the recording process if you want to make sure everything is as close to perfection as possible. As long as you can put it all together in a live performance is all that matters. Also, if you're talking about finesse, check out Metallica in Chicago 1983 and Lars was playing everything note for note to the original recordings and doing so in time and extremely smoothly, and there's plenty of audio recordings from the KEA Tour which further demonstrate that.
I Love all of these guys for different reasons. Everyone forgets about Lombardo. He's Fucking Amazing. They Fucked Him over and He Moved on to MANY Bands and Projects. I Love Gar, Lars - Whiney little Bitch, Nick, Chuck, Vinnie Colauita - STUDIO Only. Life would have Sucked without ANY of these Guys. Stay Humble and Flash the Metal.
A guy posted a vid showing he was at the Metallica concert that was put on DVD,he said lars never played the faster double bass parts,then he got the DVD from that same concert and like magic the double bass was on the DVD, lars did inspire a lot of drummers though,including me

@@v3lz0 yep, in his autobiography Mustaine talks about he wanted a drummer that would just play basic beats (unlike Gar who played these insanely different and innovative drum lines)
