Chris Kiefer They are out of sync with his other playing.. Gars playing is super tight and technical.. Lars is tripping over himself and that’s clearly heard in the recording.
You do know Lars didn't even know how to do a drum roll on the snare properly until around black album right? The drummer from Alice In Chains gave Lars a special kind of snare to help him with cheat with drum rolls.
I got to see both Lars during Ride The Lightning [ when they were still on Megaforce ] and Gar for both Killing... as well as Peace Sells tours - Lars was undoubtedly at his best them; and Gar was STILL hands down the better drummer. Lars started to lose it - IMO - around the Master ... era. Wasn't that good during that tour. Was already unacceptable by ...And Justice... tour. Scott Rockenfeld [ Queensryche ] was amazing on that tour.
I agree. Lars was an awesome drummer in the 80's which is evident in Metallica's first four albums and in the supporting tours. Even in the early 90's he was good. It was just around the Load era that things started going downhill, though it was a gradual process.
11DNA11 I think it’s very possible to be great without it.. It’s just the energy it gives you to keep going and going I think, it’s like caffeine.. Mind racing a million miles an hour, great in a creative space I guess.. I’m not talking from experience, id never touch the stuff. But the best almost always are addicted to something.. It’s a shame it went to far and killed him.. David Ellefson was as hard on it as him at one point.. And he got clean in 1989/90 because it was starting to have negative effect on life.. The fun period had long gone.
Gar is easily technically more complex and creative then Lars when it comes to beats and rolls. Each beat and role has it's original vibe and lots of technique put into them, not to mention his tone is much better and that he was high all the time. Lars on the other hand is not technically complex at all when it comes to beats and rolls. He uses standard beats and rolls used way before he started drumming. Gar was also an influential drummer in metal while Lars WAS NOT. He brought nothing new. Also the double bass on the record on Dyers eve is most likely a drum machine since the tone of the kicks is way different then the tone in the rest of the song (you can't hear it here because of the poor quality). He never played it like that live. EVER. This should be enough for anyone to determine. No hate on Lars, just reality. Was awesome listening to him live 2 years ago, but i'm sure i would be happier seeing 1986 Megadeth.
TheTorri98 It is a drum machine, do you know how a good drum machine sounds at all? It humanizes the sound making the kicking power, etc. 5-10% inaccurate.
TheTorri98 Saving time and money :P You need an hour to make a complete drum track. You need like 10 microphones, channels and days and days of work for a real drum track :P
No, the double bass in Dyers Eve is most probably still Lars playing. But its no secret he recorded it in multiple takes - hence he doesn't have the stamina to play it live, which is rather sad for a thrash metal drummer.
Gar wins, he had a more professional sound. I've heard both Lars and Gar live and they were both very good but Gar was very unique compared to other Thrash Metal drummers.
I think if Gar had more time with Megadeth, he would have been a more successful drummer than Lars, and Megadeth would probably be more successful than Metallica
@Martel Herold lol. Megadeth has easy drums and guitars? Are you high? Try playing Killing is My Business, Poison was the Cure, My Last Words, Good Mourning/Black Friday. Then try to play some metallica stuff just to understand how much easier they are. Have you ever even touched a guitar?
@Martel Herold I bet you cant even learn the easiest Poland solo. Mustaine has some pretty easy ones on some songs, but almost everything Chris Poland plays in the first 2 albums requires years of experience and practice you dumbass. Also Gar, Nick Menza and Dirk are all way better drummers than Lars.
@Martel Herold hey metallica fan. i know you think metallica invented and is the god of everything but that actually isnt true. megadeth may not be as popular, but they are way better from a technical standpoint. i like megadeth way better because its like every instrument is being used to its fullest by each player. it just sounds way better to me also. i used to be a metallica fan myself, you have to accept that just because something is more popular, that doesnt mean its technically better. it just appeals to a larger variety of people.
Actually this is Dyer's Eve, not Nothing Else Matters, and the fact that he could switch his drumming styles from insanely fast and heavy to ballad style drumming definitely shows his skills as a drummer.
Gar of course. Why even pose the question? No way Larz did those double bass in the studio, he can't play double bass live and doesn't even try anymore. They had a session drummer do the double bass parts and spliced them in. Gar was otherworldly.
Sorry to disappoint you, but Lars did all his own drum tracks. They had no session drummer. Don't know where you got that bullshit from. Plus he did a shitload of double bass in live performances back in the 80's, more than what was needed. I got the drum tab books for MOP & AJFA and Lars talks about his drumming in both those albums, and he even talks about his drumming and his approach to double kick in the RTL & KEA Drum Tab Books aswell. Maybe look it up, plus various 80's live Metallica clips.
Ulrich isn't writing much because his musicianship was a put on and would never had a seat with professional musicians except he had a record deal guaranteed to him ..Gar was a professional musician with real chops..even after three decades you can barely get by with calling Lars a musician. He wouldn't be adding much to anything cept maybe periods on sentences in lyrics. For this question to have been raised is hilarious and insulting to true musicians like gar .
It's as retarded as Ulrich vs Bonham or Ulrich vs any drummer ..Lars can play but damn after 30 years hes still nothing but ok. Any other drummer playing in place of lars would be an improvement that's says it all
mustaineforpresident 2016 Dave vs. Kirk is an interesting debate. Dave is obviously a wayyy better rhythm player, and that's why we all love Dave, but Kirk doesn't claim to be a good rhythm player. As far as leads go, when Dave solos they absolutely rip your face off, but I don't think he has the versatility that Kirk does where the expectation is that he has to solo in every song and make it sound great over all types of feels and styles. Thats one of the reasons Dave always has another lead player next to him, that and he obviously prefers to have a virtuoso in filling that role.
musically megadeth take the cake a jazz fusion drummer! and Chris Poland another jazz player playing thrash metal is not your standard stuff unbelievable !
Gar was all over the map and could play anything from jazz to metal and was much more complex and skilled, Gar is to drums what Cliff Burton was to bass and possibly to even a higher level, just a master musician with his instrument. This is not even a contest to compare Gar to Lar., Gar's playing is basically bending Lars over and paddling his ass with a big wooden paddle with holes drilled into it.
Although I really like the progressiveness of Lar's bass drums, I've heard Gar never even had a double kick, so Im afraid Gar seems to win in this case, simply from more skill. The double bass is the only edge Lars has on Gar, and that's really based on your setup. Both bands rock, Gar just had more skill. Rest In Peace, Gar
gar absolutely had a double pedal, he just used double strokes on one pedal every time you hear two hits. but he did double bass runs, so he had a double pedal
You can't compare Gar and Lars as they have entirely different backgrounds and styles.. Gar, like Chris Poland were jazz musicians, playing metal and not a metal/hard rock player playing metal..
Jesus do I see pousers, they're both good! , Lars is playing their fastest song which he obviously can't play anymore because he became glamorized, and Gars is just plain technical and better
@Martel Herold Drummer here, and yes, Gar was fucking MILES better than Lars. Lars is a good drummer, and he was really great back in the day, but Gar was MILES better. It's just the way it is.
As a drummer myself, I have to say Gar seems to have much better quality and technique than Lars. Plus, look up some of Gar's work outside of Megadeth. His work in Fatal Opera is phenomenal. It's really technical and fits much better within the song than any of Lars' tracks do in my opinion.
I can't play drums and I don't even know what 8ths and 16ths are and etc etc etc. All I know is I like both of these bands but if somebody played this for me and I didn't know who was who I would say the first guy sounds like he's the teacher and the second guy sounds like his student.
@KTF0 Gar definitely, I totally agree with the unpredictability, most drummers, even Lars it's just like, you can make it sound epic and big but it's totally predictable. Gar is seriously one of the best drummers ever.
first time hearing that dyers eve isolated track, sounds more like a practice/rehearsal take than a studio take. no control over double bass whatsoever. amazing that gar was able to do his double bass runs as fast and accurate as he did considering hes a jazz drummer
In fairness this isn't a great comparison. Dyers Eve is a great song, but the only thing notable about it with regards to Lars is that he uses double kick for most of the song, and for some reason there's a huge fiaxation on can/can't/does/doesn't Lars use fast double kick live/in studio. Lars has far better songs, like AJFA, or One. Having said all that, Lars is only great in Metallica, but no where else. It's remarkable.
I agree with your final statement. I feel also that he's the best fit for Metallica. I dunno, perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I just couldn't imagine anyone else drumming for them :)
Much respect to Gar, one of the best drummers to walk the earth. So fucking groovy he was. Does anyone have the drums only from Skull Beneath The Skin? Rip Gar
Lars still played everything himself. He just did everything in sections, such as the verse in one take, the chorus in another, etc... Then everything was put together which makes more sense to me, because then you can go over every section and fix things up that you feel need to be fixed up. I'd do that myself in the same situation, because I'm a perfectionist and I'd want to make sure that every beat, every fill was perfect, so I'd want to listen back to everything and analyze my playing so then I could rework things as I see fit.
+russkate88 That would be totally fine, if he actually played all the songs live. He didn't play Dyer's Eve until 2009 and then made a complete fool of himself. He played the other songs but he never played them as they were written. He basically did whatever the fuck he wanted in the studio and then would just bs through it and improvise live. Dave Lombardo even did a little splicing on Seasons in the Abyss, but he quickly proved that he can play them live exactly as they were written. I'm all for improvising a little bit in live performances, but that means adding, not taking away.
My view is that you can improvise in live performances, as long as however you improvise doesn't detract from the quality of the song, for example, a song like Fade To Black wouldn't sound good if he put in extra fills where they're not needed, but a song like Hit The Lights would sound good with a lot of fills.
Wow you said it perfectly. Just put on any Lars video from the last 5-6 years and you can clearly see exactly what your talking about. Very well said :"simplified all his drum beats by getting rid of fills and missing beats" PERFECTLY SAID!!!! I cant even tell you how many people disagrree with us too, when the proof is rite in front of there face.
Gar! One of my favourite drummers, what an immense talent to lose. I do NOT have anything against Metallica, I listen to both bands, but I don’t think there’s any contest between Gar and Lars. Gars has more than just an edge over Lars. RIP Gars
dude hetfield writes everything. lars has writing credits becasue he arranges the songs so that his name appears in the credits. mustaine has actually said that gar is the only guy to really impact megadeths sound, which is bullshit, but if mustaine said it then that means gar certainly influenced him
Listening to both bands as a kid I recall getting really into an album...and then go with another record till the needle ruined it by my crappy Radio Shack stereo in my room. The music was just....powerful. Now an adult where my music experience has expanded I hear for myself composition with more clarity and my understanding of music is for a lack of better words less tolerant of artists or entertainers but will always stop to hear a musician. Gar and Lars both served a purpose for the bands they served in. To compliment the overall style by which each drummer moved me listening to heavy rock bands as a kid. Musicians they are both...not djs nor a drum machine, loops or hypnotic overdub (which unfortunately are a marvel today ...this is very sad). Listening to these guys play today Gar was much more talented than Lars. Gar has more versatility, depth, and texture and it is subtle. That is not easy to do (reminds me of The Police). Lars brought out in his early recordings a more refined aggression towards drumming over something loud and fast...a major step above a punk rock beat or a rock n roll beat. Evolve it outside of a necessay need for timing like a Ringo Star. Lastly the comparison track chosen for Lars should have come from a track circa1986. To personify the drive of competition between these two bands with these two drummers at that time. Lars never being the same after that in a redundant pace nor Gar playing with Megadeth after that and has since passed away. RIP.
Lars was bloody great on And Justice... I'd say they were pretty equal based on these clips. Lars had deteriorated a lot since then, but his old stuff was HOT!
Yeah but gar drum creativity is megacrazy to play just like him but Lars is an easy lesson to learn his style to envole later on other technical drummer. Tbh Lars is an epic drummer but in the end his drumming got better when Metallica got heavier again without being too thrashy back in the 80s

HOW ARE THEY GOING TO MAKE SUCH A COMPARISON, LARS IS THE MOST BASIC DRUMMER IN METAL, IN METALLICA IT IS THE ONLY BAND IN WHICH LARS WORKS BECAUSE OF ITS VERY BASIC LEVEL FOR THE STYLE. +Chris Kiefer *were beastly.
+Chris Kiefer is beastly
Blahblah Bluhbluh are beastly
Chris Kiefer They are out of sync with his other playing.. Gars playing is super tight and technical.. Lars is tripping over himself and that’s clearly heard in the recording.
RIP Gar
Wow. Gar was superb and this recording shows what a good taste he had. He had a "colorful" playing, reminds me a bit to how Tim Alexander plays drums.
I'd say Gar but Lars was a great drummer back in the day (1981-1989)
He actually really sucked until 89 xD
Jimmy Clip lol'd
I agree. Lars was an awesome drummer in the 80's which is evident in Metallica's first four albums and in the supporting tours. Even in the early 90's he was good. It was just around the Load era that things started going downhill, though it was a gradual process.
I like Metallica plenty, but Gar is in a class of his own.
Too bad Gar was a heroine addict :(
He wanted to be great. And if you wanna be great, you need to do heroine. And he was great. Nuff said.
nope
A jazz drummer on heroine... Now I've heard everything.
11DNA11 can’t even disagree
Listen to Dyers Eve drum track, you can hear him fucking up a few times on the double bass. It's NOT a drum machine.
TheTorri98 It is a drum machine, do you know how a good drum machine sounds at all? It humanizes the sound making the kicking power, etc. 5-10% inaccurate.
***** Then WTF is point with a drum machine?
TheTorri98
Saving time and money :P You need an hour to make a complete drum track.
Cliffordrants no.
I could always play Metallica’s songs on drums. Megadeth is another level. Professional not like garage drummer (Lars)
Both drummers are great.
@@dimitrisvill1411 i bet he tried learning symphony of destruction or some shit lmao
Respect to Metallica Lars, but we all know Gar is different animal. He too deserves recognition.
gar wins by large margins. lars sounds like hes playing in a marching band to be honest
First of all Lars is a great drummer. 2nd of all marching bands are actually good so you just complimented Lars.
Gar: Good mourning/ Black Friday
Lars: Nothing else matters
lol...good point
Andy E Actually Gar is playing Bad Owen and Lars is playing Dyers Eve 👌
Actually this is Dyer's Eve, not Nothing Else Matters, and the fact that he could switch his drumming styles from insanely fast and heavy to ballad style drumming definitely shows his skills as a drummer.
@A.J. Reynolds twice actually. First time in 1998 and second time in 2010.
Luke Not Skywalker who’s “bad owen”?.. any relation to “good charlotte”?..
I love Gar as well, but you are a dumb dumb. Look up videos of lars doing double bass live. It sounds good.
Lars was a better song writer and played on more then two albums. His overalls impact on music is greater. That being said Gar is amazing and better.
Any other drummer playing in place of lars would be an improvement that's says it all
Gar has that crazy Jazz background.
That really took Dave to new level.
Huge diehard fan of both bands, but this battle goes to Gar, by FAR.
They're both good, but Gar has style.
He has his own feel that sounds unique. Lars kinda just sounds like everyone else.
Gar's best drumming had to be on Rattlehead. Simply amazed me!
Is this a serious contest? Lmao, obviously Gar. That's like comparing Dave to Kirk
Dave is a technical master !!!
dude that is such a shitty comparison, kirk and dave are a lot closer than gar to lars.. lmao
Uh, Dave and Kirk are definitely in the same ballpark. Gar craps on Lars from another universe
mustaineforpresident 2016 Dave vs.
Dave is better at riffs and lyrics. Kirk is better at solos.
Next up....
Who was the best heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson Vs a three year old girl!!
Hahaha! It would be more of a contest than this!
Blind three year old
@@chrisberg2083 without hands
Gar Samuelson one of the greatest drummers ever incredibly underrated RESPECT TO ONE OF THE KINGS R.I.P
Facts, check my channel for isolated drum tracks from killing is my business
musically megadeth take the cake a jazz fusion drummer! and Chris Poland another jazz player playing thrash metal is not your standard stuff unbelievable !
so true! sheer genius of mustaine to incorporate two jazz players!
GAR ALL THE WAY. Lars is a solid drummer but that's it. GAR Mastered the instrument whereas Lars learned the instrument
I agree! Gar has a certain feel that u can't just learn!
No competition. Gar was a jazz drummer, for crying out loud. He already had the technical advantage when he turned to metal.
Gar, Nick, and Lars are all great drummers. You can't compare them.
Plus it depends on the songs you use to go up against eachother.
Gar's stuff seems a lot more complex and not simply repeating the same thing as fast as he can. I vote Gar.
How can they even compare? Gar was a jazz player, so he's got the technical advantage.
Gar Sammuelson, Dimebag Darell, Cliff Burton and Ronnie James Dio are rocking in heaven now!
Gar all the way
You can't compare Gar and Lars as they have entirely different backgrounds and styles.. Gar, like Chris Poland were jazz musicians, playing metal and not a metal/hard rock player playing metal..
Jesus do I see pousers, they're both good! , Lars is playing their fastest song which he obviously can't play anymore because he became glamorized, and Gars is just plain technical and better
When it comes to playing drums in thrash metal, you have to be on top of your game..period! Fast, loud, technical, and aggressive virtuosity
lars:awfull double bass technique
gar:perfect harmoni and time
@Martel Herold Drummer here, and yes, Gar was fucking MILES better than Lars.
You pretty much described what I was thinking!
@KTF0 Gar definitely, I totally agree with the unpredictability, most drummers, even Lars it's just like, you can make it sound epic and big but it's totally predictable. Gar is seriously one of the best drummers ever.
Fucking Gar is 10x the drummer Lars is, and that's an understatement.
first time hearing that dyers eve isolated track, sounds more like a practice/rehearsal take than a studio take. no control over double bass whatsoever. amazing that gar was able to do his double bass runs as fast and accurate as he did considering hes a jazz drummer
Lars: average player. Gar: exceptional drum player with an "unorthodox style of playing that made him untouchable" (David Ellefson quote)
R.I.P Gar
Gar definately the thing about him is that he make dum lines that are almost like riffs
Much respect to Gar, one of the best drummers to walk the earth. So fucking groovy he was. Does anyone have the drums only from Skull Beneath The Skin?
Rip Gar
check my channel for isolated drum tracks from killing is my business
Thanks for uploading. Gar Samuelson's drum track rocks. And the other guy ... yeah, he's in a band too, but let me go back to 0:27.
I always thought Gar was very similar to John Bonham.
Both are heavy handed, with best sounding kit, and jazzy af.
Perfect combination
gar was a super big fan of john bonham!
Gar Samuelson. Period.
have you ever heard "Killing Is My Bussiness?"
Gar was and prolly still is one of the best metal drummers ever. Lars should listen to this and learn.
Apart from complexity, Gar's drumming seems more accurate. I vote for Gar.
5:12 Lars with this hair always reminds me of Rigby from regular show for some reason
The drum tracks on ...And Justice For All were spliced anyway. At least Gar's work is honest.
+russkate88 That's exactly what I was saying.
@@russkate88 thats the way a cheat works!!!
Lars's drums were so badly e.q.ed and flat sounding I got a paper cut in my ear
Gar was jazz drummer obviously he wins at least to 85% of all metal and rock drummers
How the hell did Metallica become so big with this hack on drums, and without Dave? Lars sounds like Nick from Freaks and Geeks lol.
where did you got drum lines only?
I say Gar Samuelson
Gar! One of my favourite drummers, what an immense talent to lose. I do NOT have anything against Metallica, I listen to both bands, but I don’t think there’s any contest between Gar and Lars. Gars has more than just an edge over Lars. RIP Gars
Was this even a battle?
dude hetfield writes everything. lars has writing credits becasue he arranges the songs so that his name appears in the credits. mustaine has actually said that gar is the only guy to really impact megadeths sound, which is bullshit, but if mustaine said it then that means gar certainly influenced him
lars= horrible, gar=god
yo are horrible
Lars is horrible
Gar was the most influential drummer in thrash metal history
@@nergalshagrath6667 dave labardo and vinnie paul to i say pantera cause there song rise is super thrash
RIP.
gar no contest
1:09 That's a groove if I've ever heard one.
Lars was bloody great on And Justice... I'd say they were pretty equal based on these clips. Lars had deteriorated a lot since then, but his old stuff was HOT!
didn't the producer of AJFA had to stick different tapes of Lars' drumming together to create the final product
R.I.P GAR SAMUELSON YOU ARE AWESOME
Lars is pretty badass too though
Yeah but gar drum creativity is megacrazy to play just like him but Lars is an easy lesson to learn his style to envole later on other technical drummer. Tbh Lars is an epic drummer but in the end his drumming got better when Metallica got heavier again without being too thrashy back in the 80s
That was funny, there's no even a contest here... Gar is probably laughing right now.
Brought a spoon (Lars) to a sword fight.
Gar Samuelson vs Lars... who?
lars goes unnecessarily ham on the double bass... like hes trying to overcompensate with the double bass for his lack of technical skill
and he can't do the double bass in this music in live haha
Mike Vukich yup he could in the 80's and 90's you sadly just a little mainstream sheep who wants to get likes from haters hehe, guys like you make my day :D thanks i can sleep much better now :D
mainstream sheep? what about me is mainstream? metallica are notorious for being the mainstream sellouts lol death magnetic?
Mike Vukich you a mainstream sheep, you hate on lars to get likes, i dont belive its your real opinion
no i hate on lars cause he isnt actually that good. he is nothing compared to gar samuelson or nick menza
@xxXBunnyslayerXxx Lars is a sell out either way, Lars has very similar drum patterns that get old, i like both bands (i do covers of both) But i think everyone would say Megadeth is more technical than Metallica, even the use of the spider cords compare wake up dead to ride the lightning both have spider cords but wake up dead goes everywhere and gar follows the guitar spot on, where Lars just comes up with a beat to go with it.
Jesus Lars sounds like he’s just throwing shot out there, no sorts of patterns at all
HOW ARE THEY GOING TO MAKE SUCH A COMPARISON, LARS IS THE MOST BASIC DRUMMER IN METAL, IN METALLICA IT IS THE ONLY BAND IN WHICH LARS WORKS BECAUSE OF ITS VERY BASIC LEVEL FOR THE STYLE. NOW, GAR FOR GOD, SHE'S A JAZZ DRUMMER, EVEN BETTER THAN NICK MENZA. ALSO NOT ONLY THE DRUMMERS, ALL THE MEGADETH MUSICIANS ARE BETTER THAN THOSE IN MATLLICA AND THE REST OF THE TRHAS BAND, JUST IN VOICE I WOULD SAY THAT JAMES IS THE BEST WITHOUT A DOUBT. BUT IN BATTERY THERE IS NO COMPARISON
