It's very interesting. I play in a Megadeth tribute band so I've studied the styles of all the guitar players pretty closely (and wow they are ALL good). Dave is a great player and it's like he has that special quality to be a virtuoso player but I don't know if he has the personality to just sit there and devote the hours needed to achieve that. I'm not saying Dave isn't disciplined and that he didn't devote time to his craft, he clearly did. You really hear it in the songwriting. But personality wise, and uh, extra-curricular wise :) he's more the rockstar/frontman type. I don't see him as the guy that just sat in his room for hours on end putting in the endless and tedious repetition needed to become a super clean player. That's usually the other guitarist in Megadeth's role. Dave has the talent, but I think being the frontman, songwriter, singer, party animal just took to much of his focus. All good though! Megadeth are a one of a kind band, one of my favorites, and one of the truly great guitar bands in rock/metal. In fact I can't see how they are not in everyone's top 5 list for metal guitar bands.
he's like the jimmy page of fast shredders! a lot of it is on the sloppy side, but it still manages to enhance the quality of the song, and doesnt make you question his ability or technical skill as a guitarist. He thinks about the feel of the song before the cleanliness of each individual note and it works perfectly for the music!
You read my mind, he didn't try to outplay the other guitarist, he just played what was needed (chaotic and sloppy leads which contrast with the silky smooth soloing of Poland).
To all the people complaining his playing is sloppy, you do realise it's music right? Not maths. Man made music, not computer made music. The imperfections make it sound human
I would argue that 'the slop' is part of what makes his solos (and older music in general) so interesting. He's a phenomenal guitarist, and he's the most important musician in the thrash genre by far.

Chris Poland destroys him as a lead player, but I actually prefer Dave's solos on this album. His creative genius is the driving force behind Megadeth, and it shows in his solos. They are not as technical and a little sloppy, but he plays with great feel and they ALWAYS enhance the song.
@@11DNA11 Dave's solos are far more creative than Poland... Poland is Megadeth's most skillful after "Friedman". And he could be the Big Four's most killer guitarist behind "Chris Broderick" and "Kiko Loureiro".

Isaac White not on hardwire their guitar tone sounds weird they should of stocked to the tone they had on the black album or ...and justice for all that would of been kick ass
Isaac White I don’t mind constant change if it improves the tone, many bands if not all bands do that lmao but tbh that hasn’t been the case for Metallica especially with their live tone, it’s muddy and really annoying IMO.
The whammy bar part?... Dave Mustaine just did a pinch harmonic on it.. Dimebag can do much better, he does a natural haromic, and all he does is whammy the shit out of his guitar to where it sounds like somebody screaming
+Guillermo Molina Woah man, spamming comments? Just kidding. This happens in most bands that are basically just one person (the mastermind), for example Death and Annihilator.
+Guillermo Molina I wouldn't call Dave the rhythm guitarist. He has solos in almost every song Megadeth has done, especially on this album and Rust in Peace.
This is truly the lead guitar playing of a rhythm guitar playing. You compare that to any other guitarist that's been on Megadeth: Chris, Marty, Kiko - Dave's playing is very much pattern-based and aggressive. It's a unique sound.
In a lot of ways, he is the Jimmy Page of Western metal - 'Organized chaos'. Fairly sloppy soloing at times due to minimal emphasis on technique that works out just fine in the mix and surprisingly doesn't diminish his stature as a guitar hero. Shreddsville mayor or not, his rhythm playing on the other hand, is out of this world.
I love how Dave is like, “I paid for the whole mf ing fret board, and I’m gonna use the whole mf ing fret board.” It gives it a lot of energy for real, he’s really the best at mixing everything aspect up. There's a massive change in guitar tone after Peace Sells, and having played a vintage BC Rich, I can confirm those are the way to go in order to get the sound from KimB and Peace Sells. Vintage Jacksons are amazing, but they don't bend towards that sound.
I'm curious about the guitar Dave was using to do the solo on wake up dead. His BC Rich Bich didn't have a tremolo and you can clearly hear him using one. I know Chris's BC Rich bich had a tremolo so it's a possibility that he might have been using Chris's guitar for that solo. There are also pictures of Dave back then with a red warlock that had a kahler. So Yeah. interesting.
Ok.. Yeah just my point was he solos in wake up dead. I hear a trem dive and a guitar he had been playing for 6 years publicly didn't have a trem. Just something i thought was interesting.

2:47 wait a minute... I just watched a 1986 live video of Megadeth playing this song, and in that exact solo there it was Chris Poland playing it... can we have 100% certainty of these solos here in these two videos? but yeah, it's pretty insane how Poland's solos are way more "clean", you can tell them apart from that aspect alone, not better or worse, just clean as heck

I’m sorry but if you think all these solos are bad then you’re a clown 😂. Your comment about wake up dead first two being terrible shows how much you know about music lol
A lot of tricks and gimmicks in his playing.. he's more of a punk rock soloist weilding a bag of broken glass.. perfect for Megadeth
Marty friedman and chris poland were the best guitar players my band ever had, i can't compare these two both of them were phenomenal, after them i'll say al pitrelli had some soulful playing, chris broderick had the best technique and could play all the solos live very cleanly easily and note by note, kiko has his own technique he is not very clean and can't play note by note and need to improve his picking and tone but his stage presence is the best.
why the fuck are you pretending to be dave mustaine? are you that much of a fucking loser? you are a dumb fucking idiot
are you so jobless to make a fake dave mustaine account and pretend to be him to fill the giant void in your worthless life because you are so pathetic you cant even become something of yourself
Kiko is the best, right?
Leon Damn man he’s just trying to have some fun. I see that you clearly don’t understand jokes or you’re just cognitively delayed.
Infact kiko is dave's personal favourite guitarist of the band
