I remember hearing Dave explain how “Chris Poland was an amazing guitar player who could play circles around him” in the VH1 documentary about the band when I was just getting into Megadeth about 8 or 10 years ago and thinking: what? Dave was always way supreme as far as pure talent goes in Metallica: he can’t be beaten by his co-guitarist? I went and bought the “Peace Sells” album, listened to it, found some of the old masters of Chris’ isolated guitar online, listened to them and thought: shit, Dave was right. Chris is the man.
Easily one of the most underrated guitarists of our time. Such precision, feel and flow even at that fast of a pace. You can hear how he used to play jazz and blues in his style. I’ve never heard anything like the “Black Friday” solo. Absolutely unparalleled.

Gar is better than Lars but Cliff is GOD. I've seen both live and Metallica is still the best live show I've ever seen. September 8, 1989. I saw Megadeth a year later with Marty and Nick but Metallica was better. No contest. It's a bad choice to have to make. That's why I loved both bands when it want always safe to do so. Chris is in my top 5. The guy's phrasing and technique is probably the most unique out of any metal player. That's why everyone who's come after him hasn't been able to recreate his solos properly. Chris Broderick said that they were the hardest things he's ever tried to replicate. Marty was sick, but I always go Chris. Kirk doesn't even enter the conversation when it comes to Megadeth guitarists. James is a machine. His right hand is a weapon. When it comes to rhythm players there's not many to compete.

which doesnt make sense to me. Kirk barely used the bar throughout Metallica's discography. At the end of the first solo in Four Horsemen, at the end of one of the Trapped Under Ice Solos, and various AJFA solos (Blackened, Shortest Straw, title track) and I like the way he used it all over AJFA. But other than that you don't hear it used that much. He was much more likely referring to the EVH wannabes that came out throughout the 80s.

Mr Poland alongside Mr Samuelson made Megadeth totally dangerous and unique musically. I’ve always loved the band but the #1 line up was with Chris & Gar. The whole thrash melding with fusion was mind blowing. Marty got somewhere close but was just too much of a modal good boy. I’m sure if you were fortunate enough to sit and chat with Dave & Jnr they’d reflect similar feeling. I’m just so glad Mustaine left Metallica as Megadeth bring so much to the table and the first 2 albums blew the whole scene wide open. Love them to Deth🤘🤘

Favorite lead player in Megadeth by a longshot & SO cool to hear these isolated tracks! (Thank you for posting them!)... I knew it was special when those 1st 2 records came out, but I didn't quite understand why until I got a bit older. Being into both Thrash & Jazz & becoming more groove oriented as I progressed as a player, it became apparent just how much Poland & Samuelson brought to the mix. Their well-seasoned jazz chops & in the pocket groove/swagger, balanced out the punchiness of the Dave's playing perfectly. In hindsight, it made Megadeth a truly unique & unequaled force at the time. Rust in Peace is a great record in its own right IMO, but for my taste, I haven't heard an album or line up from them that has even come close to touching that 1st recorded era since. Thanks again for posting this! It was truly a treat to stumble upon it today! \m/

Gar and Chris are a very underrated part of the sound of Megadeth. With their exit they lost a very special Jazz influence and never achieved to sound the same than in their early days. For me Peace sells is up to Reign in Blood, Ride the lightning, No Place for disgrace. A very unique time in Metal.

To me he's the best guitar player for Megadeth because he was the first guitar player. When you change musicians it changes the sound of your band. Also I saw an interview with Dave talking about when Chris asked to join the band. He said "This guy plays circles around me. Why would he want to be in my band". And if you notice all Megadeth lead guitar players are phenomenal, but Dave is the driving rythem force. Dave has great leads also, but he's dirty. Like he said with Marty Friedman. Marty is Passion, and Dave is aggression.

Not a guitar player but it seems to me like Poland can use color, tone, and other effects in far more musical ways than other metal guitarists I’ve heard. In Good Mourning especially there are a few long notes he plays almost like a wind instrument or vocalist. I’ve always loved the sound of the Peace Sells album. Totally unique.

I remember listening to this album for the first time when I was 15 back towards the end of '86. The first run through, all I could think was "damn, the musicianship is outstanding... the riffs and solos are amazing... but, the song arrangement is beyond weird... and the singer sucks!" Ha! It took me a couple of months to fully appreciate their sound, and this album wound up becoming my favorite all-time piece of music.

Dang, Dave Poland was a fire breathing guitar monster. I bet Dave Mustain was very sad to lose him when he left. Dave asked him to rejoin after Marty left when he was recording The System Has Failed in 2003-2004. Dave P. recorded some solos for the album to help out his old friend but politely declined his offer to rejoin.
