That verse bassline is insane
It had to drive the song because the guitars just hold out chords. It's a weird thing for guitars to take a back seat in a Megadeth song, but this a song is a fucking banger.

Gar Samuelson is in my opinion the most underrated metal drummer of all time. He was the first guy to incorporate heavy jazz influences into thrash, and he was a fundamentally better drummer than any of the other "big 4" thrash bands. Very odd that most people have no idea who he is.
Heroin man... Early death and a tiny discography leads to many not knowing some of the best musicians ever.
Had he lived and stayed with Megadeth longer, he would have been the most important and influential drummer of the Big 4 for sure.
Everyone talks about Lombardo and yeah, he is amazing and the Thrash Drum God but Gar was a whole different level.
Gar was just a monster on drums. An absolute genius. Knew when to sound flashy and when to stay in the pocket.

And, his single pedal was better than a lot of dude's double bass.

@@BegetterVIIEVEN The way he slowly opens the hi-hat into trashy groove talks a lot about his dynamics. Very few drummers from that time have this type of style. Almost feels like the Trash met fusion.
@DEEP MENON This. There are many details that are easy to miss on the final mix of the songs. He had a lot of flare to his playing. Ghosts notes, hi-hat licks, snare rolls, ride and bass drum patterns. Such a talented guy. What a loss.

Any drummer who's played with a bassist as tight as David finds it easier to play always.
This is some next level rhythm section The best Megadeth lineup in my opinion. Gar never gets any mention. He should be recognized as top 5 metal drummers of all time. Fuck top 5 drummers ever.
FACTS
Junior is my favorite metal bassist hands down. His tone is so good and his basslines aren’t swallowed up by the guitars. Gar was a hell of a drummer!
Sad that someone who was so gifted had to die young because of substance abuse issues. I think Gars was alcohol related- liver related. Gar was an incredible drummer. His jazz and fusion chops infused into the speed metal of Megadeth, along with Chris Polands insane guitar work, has never been duplicated. Those 2 albums they played on are just stellar.
I am happy the first album was remastered so we can hear Gar's drumming better.

Songs like this and Good Mourning/Black Friday assure me that Gar Samuelson is one of the very best metal drummers of all time.
Gar is like a praying mantis on the drums. The bass on this song is one of Ellefson’s best on this album. These two most definitely helped propel Megadeth to its State Of The Art Speed Metal Band status into history!!

I got here after some slayer videos of the same type (drums and bass only) and MAAN how relieved I feel after hearing some actually good basslines and playing again, araya may be good at vocals but not at bass, like, AT ALL

I could be wrong , but I'm pretty sure this is all one take , at least the drums and wouldn't surprise me if bass was as well. It's not quantized then pieced together later. You just can't match the energy of cutting live without a click in my opinion . Stand in the same room together , eye to eye and who cares about bleed over . Knowing you HAVE to get it right means you will.
It was all over for Megadeth once Max Norman came along. He really polished the band way too much. As early as 1992 he convinced them to use digital pitch correction (yes, it existed that long ago, it's just that it was expensive and therefore less common than it would become with the advent of pro tools).

He played with pick here. He started playing with pick in 1984-85
