Listening to these bass tracks really makes me understand why Mustaine used to comment that at the time all the other bassists in the metal scene were afraid of how good Ellefson was. Truly Megadeth's secret weapon.
Go listen to Dave Mustaine interview after first Megadeth show. He says the bass players in the other bands would try and upstage Jr because they knew he was hi caliber bass player.
@@rocafella142 Just because he's a trashy person doesn't mean he isn't an excellent bassist. Sure, he's not Megadeth's "secret weapon" anymore, but he certainly was on all of their classic albums and nothing will ever take that away.
@thirteenthandy I agree. Ellefson is my favorite metal bass player 🙂 But what I mostly meant is now Mustaine shits on his playing. Mustaine said he wrote all his parts on bass. And said bass players aren't talented and said the bass is one step up from the kazoo
Thanks to peace/rust being put onto the game RockBand some geniuses out there have managed to get all the master tracks of each instruments from the songs! Snoop around the internet enough and you'll probably find them, theres quite a few on youtube. I simply synced the drum and bass tracks I found for this song. Theres something holy about being able to hear Dave's tracks for his solos
Lets not go there. Both equally awesome. And always remember, Burton was a finger bassist, while Ellefson is a pick bassist. Burton had more of a classical based spacey bass sound while Ellefson is more raw and jazz based. Different styles within one awesome genre. Respect to both.
njldst2007 true. Also, Dave's playing is very precise and professional. Burton was a freestyler with a heavy tone and a good soloist. In fact, the two are amazing.
Cliff was more of a lead guitarist playing the bass, where as Dave was a bass guitarist playing the bass...and that wasn’t to knock Cliff at all, his approach was from outside the box, and unconventional
I'll have to disagree. Although Ellefson was cleaner and tighter than Cliff in recordings, Cliff would absolutely destroy Ellefson as far as songwriting, creativity on his basslines, technique (just look at his solos), innovation (the use of wah and heavy distortion) and style. But let's just enjoy both of them equally!
This bass track is quite good but honestly jason newsted could play it, cliff is better and will always be one of, if not the best metal bassist of the 80s. Cliff had so much more feeling and he was musically educated, he knew when to go crazy and when to back off and play the role of a bassist.

When did he say that?

This comment aged well 👀

Man, just compare the bass playing here to what other bassists in the 80's were playing. Blows them away!
The bass on The entire record are just awesome. Ellefson's technique is pretty underrated
funky and heavy at the same time!!
i feel like thats what megadeth is
Jazz and metal
Nothing funky here. Early Megadeth was jazz and blues influenced metal. Sad that they lose it after Peace cells. ;)
@@brankometalac Nothing funky??? Listen to it from 0:55 and onwards... Groovy as fuck.
0:54 = beyond awesome
Ellefson started playing bass with his fingers he later switched to a pick because of the music megadeth was making
Understandable.
Fact.
Damn, I can't believe how tight Ellefson's pentatonic runs (that ascending descending thing) are. He's literally a machine.
Tal cual
0:55 I died then came
My God!!! These guys were sooo ahead of the curve,
So good it hurts
1:10 this guy is playing funk on a thrash song haha
0:55 Badass riff

and then there was Metallica who completely ignored the bass...
Only on and justice for all. And that album still sounds amazing.
@@MrBones-lw2bf yeah
You cannot even hear Ellefson in the actual track 😂
@@antananarywa nope
@@antananarywa dude, you can clearly hear ellefson's bass either the original or remastered versions of this album.
WHAT? GREAT BASS RIFF
Over time Ive come to believe he was the best.
2:27 you're welcome
Perfect balance of heavy, raw and most importantly - groove!
Now THIS is an active bass line . Fun to hear.
Jazz band 101! holy fuck the end is dominating!
Early Megadeth was jazz and blues influenced metal. Sad that they lose it after Peace cells. ;)
When Funk, Jazz and thrash collide…the heavens opened and Megadeth was born…
wow this is a masterpiece right here
2:27. Pure EPICNESS
WORSHIP

loved cliff as a performer -- and he performed well -- but technical skill, Ellefson, hands down.
Yeah, don’t understand why people aren’t smart enough to appreciate one without dumping on another.
Ellefson played with fingers up until recording Peace Sells
@@joelapilainen Yes, and Peace was their 2nd album
this is RAD
jazzy flavour but also heavy as hell
I DO love Gar playing!!! How did you do that? Do you have separate tracks?
I’m about 8 years late lol. But to answer your question, they’re the isolated remastered tracks probably ripped from a Guitar Hero or RockBand game
@@Logan_Williams_ yes
Man... I really don't understand the people who think Menza is better than Gar.
They are two very different drummers. They're both good in their own way.
Tampoco yo lo entiendo.
They are the same
No way they are the same... Gar is by far better
Gar and nick are the same good
Real Drum'n'bass! Hey, man, where did you get it? I have only RiP master and backing tracks...
hmm davids a good little bass player
gar never plays the same thing always switching it up hes the least boring drummer, just amazing, his flow is epic
This is bad ass!!!!

I'm pretty sure Ellefson changed from time to time. I don't know what he used here, though (probably a pick).
The best
Ellefson rules \m/
Samuelson and Junior made an unparalleled rhythm section. Menza was good, but he was not Samuelson.
Cliff was more of a lead guitarist playing the bass, where as Dave was a bass guitarist playing the bass...and that wasn’t to knock Cliff at all, his approach was from outside the box, and unconventional
la mea joya ctm
Gotta agree,IMO Ellefson is miles above even Burton as far as awesome bass players go
Burton was great but he was elevated because of his death....(no offense to his legacy and his family)
@@lonewolf604 cliff burton's bass sounds horrible! sound like a shitty guitar.

@@trolliumTV it's called distortion. I can quite understand if you don't like it, but his Tone on Rtl is very cool.
Did Ellefson write this bass? Or did Mustaine?
Mustaine wrote the bassline as it just merely mirrors the guitar riff. However nobody can play it like Junior 😉
Technical death metal way before death metal
No.
Kid Carlomagno Try again lol
Except that this does not sound like Death metal at all.
Technical thrash metal*

oh fuck off
Yeah but he didn't
Except that Cliff was very sloppy. As a musician Cliff was amazing, as a bassist...not.
Watch them play this live in the 80s and tell me cliff is better haha.
Both are great bassists and musicians, no need to hate y'all
