I never actually put this into thought, but I've been using the same Astro A40s for around 10 years now... Astro headsets are definitely quality products
I was gonna say that, I was literally looking for this comment. I’ve had my A40TRs since 2016 and every single component - even the original headset cable - is the same as when I bought it. I haven’t even thought about buying a new pair, but maybe I will just cause 🤔
Good to see you on your feet again Brad, I hope your health is improving and you're getting to a better place with dealing with these issues. Sincerely, someone who also has had a very weird, long health journey as well. Rooting for you.
Been a big fan of you for a long time. Since 2012 COD, you're actually the reason why i got the A50 and It hasn't disspointed since! Love seeing these reviews
I use the A50X and the HDMI ports are versatile, they don't care what you plug into them. I have my laptop plugged into the PS HDMI port and it's flawless. Something tells me that the USB-C ports in the new Gen5 are going to be more limiting and force you to use the correct console/input.
I have to disagree with you about optical. Having an optical cable out of my tv and into my a50 base means I can use the headphones for EVERY thing coming out of my tv, not just 1 console. I'm talking live sports on cable tv, apple plus or any native app on your tv, every console connected to your tv. All in dolby 5.1
Can you notice a difference in audio? The A50X with HDMI seems like it would give you better audio. But the simple setup of the A50 Gen 5 is way more appealing. I have gen 4 A50 and they are amazing for the time being.
The A50X with HDMI does give you slightly better audio if you can notice it. Casual gamers won't really notice it much especially if they dont mess with settings.
I have the Astro A50x myself and I tried using the usb c audio to see if there’s a difference between that and the hdmi audio and to be honest using the usb c audio is a huge downgrade in sound!
I had the a40 and upgraded to the a50x. Audio quality sounds the same to me. A40 allows you to control voice chat and game audio faster with the knob and more precisely. A50x voice chat mix is ok, but not as precise. If you have multiple consoles in multiple rooms a40 is easier to setup. A50x requires wire to power outlet and usb to Xbox. If you really want a white headset and don’t mind the cost do it. Otherwise a40 and a50 are fine if you only have Xbox and pc.
I got the A50s a billlion years ago because of drift0r, when the base station was a longer shape. eventually I got probably the gen 3 ones you show here and sold my old ones toa friend. I havent' really paid attention at all, but since the one HDMI passthrough thing for splitting out the audio I got broke (it was from astro), a base station that just HAS HDMI seems very interesting... then again, I've just been running it through USB for years now anyway.
Really wish you would have discussed the audio quality difference between the Gen 5 and the X especially on console. Supposedly the X can give better audio quality?
I only game on a PS5 but do care about the game and chat mix control option. But is that worth the extra money? I currently use a wireless mic that does not have that option but, with discord on ps5 and PlayStation private chat I am able to adjust peoples voice volumes I play with anyways. I also prefer less cords as possible. I’m stuck between A50 Gen 5 and A50X please help!
I have the steelseries artics 9 for 2 years now. No conplaints. I iwned the astros a40s and they had a lot of conpabillity issues and used optical audio. Idk r they even wirth it? They are soo big too and u can be fine w simpler headsets w great audio quality😊
Yeah... at $500 cad for the 50X here in Canada, they compete with legitimate studio headphones at that price point and they just get thrashed. Moreover, they're more expensive than audeze maxwells's which have better build and share similar driver tech to Audeze's $2500 engineering headphones like the MM-500. If you want an all in one gaming headphone, there is practically no reason to step beyond something like or equivilant to a cloud 3. Otherwise, just get into a setup with a dedicated dac and amp to run wired studio headphones. Diminishing returns comes in hard on "gaming" headphones.
I have the official Xbox Wireless headset and it’s amazing. $100 I think and it connects easy to the Xbox and you can also connect BT to your phone or laptop or whatever and play music or answer calls. The best part is the right side of the headset is the volume knob and the left is the game/ party chat mixer so you can easily adjust on the fly. Only downside is that it’s not the most comfortable headset. It does hurt the top of my head but other people love it so maybe my head is just weird shaped lol.
@ agreed. It’s the biggest con of the headphones. I mean you can use them as BT headphones for your phone or PC but not on PlayStation. Of course they removed the aux port 🤦♂️
My a50 gen 4s cut out randomly for a few seconds all the time it's really annoying. I'm connected to my ps5 through the optical on my TV which sounds wayyy better than just usb imo.
You could go with the Epos pc38x, if you were on PC I'd recommend the Sennheiser HD560s or 660s but you'd have to do a separate mic setup which isn't possible on ps5
@@DustinEG6 so if I got the sennheiser they could work on ps5 if I do a separate mic? Or not possible at all? Does the epos pc38x work on ps5? Thanks for the reply
Bruh if you are spending damn near $400 on an audio solution and wireless is not a 100% requirement for you, please never ever ever buy a gaming headset. $400 can get you proper studio headphones, a dac/amp stack and a really nice mic.
This was a real weak "review." You hardly compared the two headsets, and we all know that HDMI is going to give you better sound quality compared to USB. You conveniently left that part out because all this ACTUALLY was is just an advertisement pushing you into the newest product while downplaying the old one. Do better and stop coming off like a sellout.
Is it just me or do wireless headphones just sound awful. I bought the A50 Gen 4 and the audio was just terrible over USB compared to my £80 wired Hyper X Cloud II....
I never actually put this into thought, but I've been using the same Astro A40s for around 10 years now... Astro headsets are definitely quality products
Ive had my A40s for so long as well. I recently switched over to the A50X and have no regrets.

Same, but this is not astro anymore. Its logitech. Covered in typical cheap plastic like any other logitech product. Astro's are done.
Good to see you on your feet again Brad, I hope your health is improving and you're getting to a better place with dealing with these issues. Sincerely, someone who also has had a very weird, long health journey as well. Rooting for you.
Thank you for this video, I was so confused on why both of these products existed at the same time.

The A50 series lasts forever
@ I have the same model as yours, lasted me 4 years so far
I actually bought a pair of astros for a main headset about a year ago since u recommend them, and am very happy with them.

I really wanna get the A50s but my A40 gen 3s are still doing great.
Awesome review, thanks for the content!

Yes, but the red USB C cable is only to power the bass station or the connect to the pc. The red USB C doubles as a wall plug, to plug into the wall.

@codwawfreakify Yeah that's what I'm wondering, if its possible that we might notice, also wondering is the audio better on Xbox or ps5 with the gen 5

Will they ever update the A40s? Feels like forever since we’ve gotten a new A40.
I don’t have none but which one should I get ? How is the battery life ? And the sound quality
30hr battery, great sound quality, great mic quality. Gen 5 is better value
Really wish you would have discussed the audio quality difference between the Gen 5 and the X especially on console. Supposedly the X can give better audio quality?
Yes i hear you can have a customizable EQ settings specifically for console, not many console headsets can be fully customized
Great comparison and the gen 5 is where my money is going
Thank you for this !
Currently during black week I can get the A50 X for 233.42$/224.18Euro/186.53£ worth it?
So which one should I get the Gen 5 A50 or the A50X?
How do we feel about Logitech buying Astro? Were old Astros better?
For PS5 what is better A50 gen 5 or A50X
You have reponse ?
@David-hs3wy No, I don't know which one to buy
A50X

Astro's always come down to the price, the casual will always be fine with their HyperX headset.
Or Corsair

Driftor do you have a good eq for the a50 gen 5 for COD BO6 because I can hardly hear footsteps at all. Need help pls
I have the A20 for 4 or so years should I upgrade never had a problem with them?
No! Not worth the Upgrade especially if you never had Problems. Alot of better uses for your Money
You keep saying gen 3....
Actually might pick it up now its cheaper and doesn’t need all the extra HDMI stuff.
Quick question does GEN 5 still work with Elgato?
I'm still using the A20, but my transmitter died on me. I wish there was a solution before i but another headset
