It comes down to if you can actually hear the difference between 16-bit and 24-bit audio. In my experience, I can't.
It's mostly useful for increasing the dynamic range - which means the difference between the loudest and quietest sounds you can hear. So audio as low as -144 dB can exist in the mix.
tl;dr it's not much of a difference, and I can't hear one at all, but some people swear by it.
@BadIntentStreamTechReviews really appreciate the detailed response. This is kind of what I was hoping. I'm old and don't hear as well as I used to any way. So it seems like saving $80 and getting the Gen 5 is the way to go. Thank you again!
I need help choosing headphones for PlayStation 5. I'm looking for ones that have good micro, chatmix control in the headphones themselves, without navigating the console menu. Other than the astro a50x. Generally a bit cheaper. The basic thing is wireless.
Does the Gen 5 have an IOS app or is EQ stored in the base for phones?
There's an iOS app, yea.
So for the a50x for ps5 u put the audio to chat only on the second menu ?
I’ve had the gen4 for awhile and even had to replace the base station for $99. I’ve been debating on swapping to the steel series pro wireless. Surprised they released the gen 5 right after gen x
If you’re talking about the nova pros, then they’re really good, only thing I didn’t like about em was the earcups and the little noise canceling nub inside the ear cups, but other then that they’re solid plus you can swap the battery when you’re low, but I did have some issues with the battery not charging sometimes, so I had to unplug and plug in the dock again lol, but I might consider the a50 (was gonna go with the x but I only play on pc) rn I’m using the Razer black sharks which are fine but battery life dies so quickly plus it’s micro usb, so if you have a ps5/xbox/pc/switch then go with the x , if you’re just gaming on one platform then go with the a50 that’s just my opinion though
Very informative and well done video, thanks a lot bud! Hmmm, these loud? i like my headset volume to get loud as i have damaged hearing and need them to get loud so i can actually hear footsteps
Not the loudest, they're above average. HyperX Cloud II is still probably the overall loudest that I've heard.
@ cloud ll wireless? Forgot to add they have to be wireless. Thanks!!
if i mainly play on pc and just use switch and ps5 for single player titles, would the gen 5 be the right buy over the X
Yea just get the gen 5
Super helpful video ❤
So should I upgrade from the a50 gen to x? For ps5
So, if I have PS5 and PC in different rooms and I don't care about chat/game volume settings, I should go for A50 gen 5? Is the sound quality same?
@@t1murrr Yes and sound quality is the same.
No mic-out is a big fail imo.
If I can have a PC and a console connected at the same time via USB, why not have it setup to send mic audio to the PC? I get removing the 3.5mm jack but they just didn’t replace the capability at all? 😢
Is there any other headset that has a working game/voice chat switcher and does the a50x support 4k 120hz
the only reason ill never give up the a40s is the mic is removable, they needa make some a50s with a removable mic, or better yet no mic.
It's actually baffling that they haven't incorporated the removable mic into the a50s. Seeing as it's a pretty well-liked feature of the a40s. At least from what I've gathered.
@@ASZCA29dude if you flip it up it’s out of the way what are yall crying about
@@krasserj4k no one's crying, and it's not a matter of the mic being in the way. It's a matter of aesthetics. Some people like being able to remove to mic in public, or even if they use an external mic at home. If you just thought about it a little before commenting, you'd avoid coming across as a fool. It's such a simple feature that has a existed for over a decade.
@@ASZCA29 aesthetics you don’t even see it on your head goofy
@@krasserj4k you're the goof for not realizing some people have other opinions and preferences than you. I'm at least conscious enough to realize that.
Does custom eq work on consoles?
Yep. You just have to set them in the G Hub phone app.
@@BadIntentStreamTechReviews ok cool. I plan on using with ps5 only, just wanted to make sure it worked. Ty!
So I can use the a50x like an a50 gen 5 right? if I dont want to use the hdmi for sound, I can just use usb c and it functions the same? I was thinking of getting the x incase I want to use that feature later.
Yeah, you can use it exactly like the gen 5 with just USB C. I think that's a good plan. Might want the HDMI switching eventually.
Thank you so much! I was looking into buying these for my bf and I was so confused lol.
Does they gen 5 have the stupid power cut off when not on head straight!?
Nah they finally took that out.
Would the Gen 4 Astros A50 priced at $150 a good deal?
After hearing that mic difference I wouldn’t even pay 3 dollars for the old ones 😂
@@lemons2513I wouldn't buy it for myself if it was your $3
@@x-ray3431 Ight bro they can’t be that bad 😂
have you experienced any issues with any of the a50 models? pretty upset I along with hundreds if not thousands of people are having so many issues. having to manually hard reset, not connecting to base station, redownload command center uploading new firmware, new firmware not working, having to download old version of CC, download old firmware, timing hard reset 50-75% into update, no sound coming out... the list goes on. $300 for the headset very disappointed
For Gen 5 can I just get the power from a USB port from my PC instead of the power adapter?
@@RGR465 Technically possible, but not recommended.

Thanks.
I have the A50x, now I'm trying the Gen5, but I don't notice any difference, both in the microphone and in the audio. (I only use them on PC with USB-C). Do they really have differences?
The Gen5 seem more uncomfortable to me because they open less physically in front
@@CapitanoKirk They have the exact same audio drivers, so no difference. (That was the point of this video)
@@BadIntentStreamTechReviews sorry but I don't know English well
@@BadIntentStreamTechReviews Is the microphone identical?
Hello. What do you mean they open worse at the front? I dint understand.
@@makkeyn I can't explain it in English.
The A50X physically you can open them in front to listen to the external audio (for example your voice). The gen5 open less, they are closer, it does not pass air
My gen4 always has some sort of interference noise on my xsx.
Upgrade
Can you use a50 gen 5 directly connect to a pc by the cable ?
To charge yes. To actually use wired, no.
Does the gen 5 still have the hissing noice that gen 4 has?
Nope
Upgrade from the a50?
Upgrade from Gen 4? It's a much better headset overall, so I'd upgrade. Only real downside is less bass if you're into that.
@ awesome just ordered
couldn we use it on phones?
Yes, but only with the base station.
For PS5 Which better A50 Gen 5 or A50X
... Did you watch the video?
WATCH THE VIDEO!!!!
Ok so astro a40 tr or astro a50 gen 5. For sound quality?
@@ajo510 A50 Gen 5 sounds better overall, but there's less bass.
@BadIntentStreamTechReviews appreciate it. Thank you for replying back
Can I plug the X into my controller if I want to?
@@johntabor2619 No, unfortunately. Only works with the Base Station.
So is that chat mixing really a big deal ?
@@RoasAych-w6k Completely dependant on your individual use case. I don't personally VC on console (only PC), so I don't need it.
Others voice chat on console every day.
I have the a50x and use it on pc and ps5. Pc works awesome and I love it, however when i connect the ps5 with hdmi and usb a it limits my frames on 1440p and 4k at 60hz. I really dont know why, tried several 2.1 hdmi's on my oled monitor and oled tv always the same result. Does anyone know why this happens and how I can change that? If there is no solution i would send it back and get the gen 5. What exactly is the game voice mix?
Can't speak on the first part - someone else may have the answer or Logitech support.
But for the game/voice mix, if you're in a party chat or discord call on PS5 you can hear the game volume and the audio of the people you're talking to at the same time. Game/voice mixing lets you make one or the other louder just by pressing the game or voice button in increments on the headset. It's very convenient, but if you don't VC it's not really important.
So I have gen 4 Astro and only game on Xbox so you are saying people like me should buy the gen 5 instead of gen x?
I’ve seen the X has 3D audio on ps5 as well, while gen 5 doesn’t. Correct me if im wrong tho…
Every headset can use Sony's 3D audio, so technically yes.
So does that mean if i play xbox it would be easier to use the a50 and not the x?
@@MasonMoyer-f4p yes
i really dont know if i should get a gen 5 or X i had a gen 4 but broke so i been wanting to get the gen 5 or X but idk what to get i Play on pc
If you only play on pc you only need the gen 5. The x is the exact same except you can switch between consoles
Wich one is better for pc
First materials quality
Second sound quality
Wireless connection is not important
Razer kraken v3
Razer blackshark v2
Razer Barracuda X 2022
Logitech g635
Logitech g pro x (cable)
HyperX Cloud III
HyperX Cloud III. Best comfort, sturdiest build. Also overall best sound of those, but lacks bass.
thank you
Just got refurb a50 gen4 This are more than enough for me! 👍🏼
somehow i cant Download profiles for the A50 gen 5 in the Logitech ghub
is the Astro A50 gen 4 still worth it in 2024 ?
No
I have the A50x…. I love the sound quality, but man these things are about to drive me up a wall and off a cliff.
These things consistently lose connection with the base station and refuse to reconnect. I always have to go through numerous hard resets, unplugging the base station, and connecting to the pc multiple times and then it might FINALLY boot back up.
I’m thinking I might make these a back up headset once I buy my house, cause this is unreal
Logitech support can probably set you up with a replacement. I'd definitely hit them up!
@@BadIntentStreamTechReviews they are back on now, but just like all other times… they only reconnect when it’s back to being 100% charged.
The only one reason I’ll get these headsets is because of what they could do for the PlayStation five but currently I’m using the Odyssey Maxwell headset, the voice to game chat and that might be there
The mic is different, in the way it comes down and locks.
Would you recommend the gen 5’s for $300 or the gen 4’s brand new for $150
