The previous shop did a terrible tuneup on this detroit diesel 8v71
Bad exhaust valve timing, wrong injector heights, and very imbalanced fuel rack adjustments on the injectors. All leading to a smoking, shaking, low on power bus to drive. Авто/Мото

BGM..I really need someone to fix my 2010 Ford E350 super duty shuttle bus! It really hard to find people who wants to work on them..
@@cherilcooper289 random spot for this comment. Look up Indiana Diesel, his son. He knows that stuff.
@@natevanlandingham1945 Thanks Nate! I will..I need a clutch fan and some modules inside the steering wheel..I'm afraid to take it to a dealer because they may or may not fix it and still charge thousands of dollars for little or nothing..I already changed the alternator and the battery and gave it a new head gasket..but my apt complex said I can't work on it here...😡😡😡😞😞😞
That's one of those Chinese side by sides . There great for what they are for around the place stuff. You got it used and I'm sure a great deal, probably did good. New there kind of high but used probably a good buy. Those Chinese motors are good these days there usually Honda copies. Parts for them is what I forsee being a problem. As long as it's a Honda close engine parts and stuff shouldn't be a problem.
Now that was a satisfied customer.
From watching your videos, it appears to me that there are many shops that think they can work on 2 cycle Detroits, but in reality, they can't. I have been fascinated by 2 cycle Detroits since 1971. Thanks for the great videos, and the honest work you do. Ethics are hard to find these days!
Man, she is a pretty bus I'm glad someone is taking care of her.
So the people who supposedly knew enough to put new injectors into that diesel didn't know enough to set the clearances on the tapets? Imagine that!
Chaulk it up to lack of experience. We are a generation or two removed from mechanical fuel injection being the dominant system on the road. The old hands that knew it by heart are either retired or passed on and their replacements for the most part haven't had the experience. With the exception of Scott's son Tyler, there aren't too many guys out there under 50 that have any experience with DD 2-strokes.
Look for THE BUS GREASE MONKEY on Google...! He will SHOW You how to do it .
How hard can it be?????
@@steamfan7147 That just isn't true.... its not experience. Its willful ignorance. All you have to do is read the manual.... just like anything else. The First guy to ever install a DD mechanical injector would never have known either without reading the manual same as someone today.
Scott you’re the best and the most honest man for share !!!
Another save by the good guys well done
Great stuff ,another happy customer wanting to give you a big hug and a kiss lol👍
I saw this gentlemans bus on a different RUclips channel, it's a very nice home done conversion, he raised his family in that bus
the man on the hill in Tennessee did it again making another customer extremely happy when other mechanics have failed way to go Scott Happy Father's day from James in Colorado keep up the good work good luck on your new garage
To the Perry's: Kudos on one darn straight, nicely accomplished 4106!! A definite "top of the heap" status contender!!
Love the sound of a Detroit.
I have been looking at older RVs that led to the discovery of the Scenicruiser which I fell in love with buses. Anyway, found your channel and diminished my apprehensions, my mind is made up bus life is for me. Thanks again!
Great to see the new vids, Scott!!
Thanks for another great video. Was commenting to myself about the valve noise. It was quite obvious. Glad it was an easy fix and that RV is back on the road.
You just seem like you and i would be best friends...you remind me of my Roaming vet...I have 13 dogs..I rescue them..and i found this vet who does house calls..His name is mike and we have become good friends over these last 6 years...I hope one day to use your services when i finally get my bus..regardless...I am loving this channel...May The Lords Blessing be with you...You are helping many...and your heart shows on your sleeve..
Like those go-no go feeler gauges….
While working on building the midfield airport terminal in Detroit we used Cushman buggies for cleanup, nonstop problems with fan limit switches replaced em several times. Finally I brought a plain ol wall mount light switch and wired it to the fan motor and directly to the battery. It worked perfectly. You just had to remember to shut it off when you were done with it.
Be a good ideal to operate a relay with the system with the right fuse
Scott! You are the man, sir. That idle smoke and the sound just wasn't right.
Your measurements confirmed this. Well done!
Watching the difference, perfect!
I wish I had the cold start sound as a ringtone on my phone. Great video!
Damn good job Scott. You shine above many of the so called professional shops. Like the channel.
That was a really clean bus! Beautiful and a satisfied customer. A win win.
That (to me) was one of the cleanest green monsters I have ever seen!! It would be nice to be able to monitor the Turbo pressure!
Made Another Customers Day 💯
Thanks for another great upload!!
Nice bus. Happy customer. Fun new ride.
Nice work, sounds great.:)
That UTV is a major upgrade of the golf cart. Good luck with it. Saw a few bad reviews online by owners but who knows. You have skill and knowledge that is quite valuable - that gentleman truly wanted to kiss you for fixing his problems.
Several people I know bought them and dumped them within a year of ownership. They all had issues and even the warranties were pretty much worthless.
congratulations on that new UTV looks good :)
Gotta have holes in the floor to let the rain water out
Scott, another job done very well. It is so unbelievable that many 'mechanics' do not know much about the old two - strokes.I speak with my friend and old trucking partner a- bout your vids a lot. He's also a retired diesel mechanic and loves hearing about your endeavors. Just something about the 'music' of a well maintained Detroit.
I'm not sure you would feel that way if you did what I did , back in the day I hauled coal in a 6v53 13 speed , sickest thing I ever drove , seriously , change gears 7 times crossing a four lane highway loaded .
Well these engines are absolutely Agent now, I wouldn’t expect a modern mechanic to know much about them,
Nice job guys!
Love that clean engine bay!
keep the videos coming
Wow you got a pretty clean one to work on.
I've experienced that same kind of poor maintenance on my big rig. I wish Scotty could teach all mechanic's how to work on vehicles.
Every once in a while Scott, a deal comes along that you can't turndown. A little attention, some basic logic and some really good luck got you this piece of equipment. not that you don't deserve it. You guys are the hardest working people that I've seen. I've always said that in the mechanical field, you don't have to be a crook to make a living. Just being honest is the best way to go. I worked at a Phillips 66 station for a little over a year and NEVER did anything dishonest with any of our customers. The word got around that people could rely on me to tell them the truth. I was always busy. When I left, the boss called me to tell me how many of my customers were asking if I had moved to another station because they would have gone there for service. I on the other hand, got a job with UPS as a local delivery driver. Worst mistake I ever made.
alright scott!!! your moving up in tha world!!!! i like that side by side!😂Burn rubba!😂🤣😂
Bet Leroy likes the new vehicle😀
I picked up a diesel truckster same sort of thing. Over heating sold it cheap and it was the rad cap.
Imagine that, someone doesn't know how to add coolent to the radiator...
AND, whodathunk that it wouldn't draw coolant out of the resivor(sp) when the engine cooled down (creates a vacuum in the coolant system). Blockage or cap?
sometime the simple things are over looked. thanks
At least he’s learned not to take it back to that shop.
that bus is beautiful /that green and white is the best looking you had on this youtube
Great deal on the side by side. That bus just needed a real mechanic. You really ought to start a 1800 Detroit diesel help line 🤣
Wow that thing sounds Sick..
Let the doctor in there..
Sick em scott
i had something similar happen with a honda civic. overflow tank was full but still had the gauge say it was overheating. top up the rad with maybe 1/2 quart of coolant and it has been fine since. i would guess the rad cap may be bad.
Really like the 4106’s.
That one looks great. The clean engine and bay is enviable.
What a neat engine. No belts flapping in your face.
Nothing better then a Bad Tune up on a Detroit to make your eyes burn from the raw fuel
Scott can we put one of these motors in a go cart..Lol..
I figure you could make it happen lmao
Awesome
Happy Father’s Day 👍
A ‘simple’ fix saves the day and a few thousand dollars!!
How do u put a hole in the floor. Lol you can drive from farm to farm in KY not sure about going to the store.
That is how an engine bay should look!
One of my favorite things to do is adjusting valves it isn't hard to know what you're doing
Not sure if it's just the RUclips encoding, but it looked like the throttle linkage wasn't all that smooth. Also - do none of these shops know how to read a manual?
This one i wondered a bit about. Does it have an worn out diesel pump or valves? It runs so much more hard than the other engines I have heard. Even after the tune.
This is a Detroit Diesel. It doesn't have a pump. It has unit injectors.
First video I've seen revving a 4106 motor...
Have you'll gotten use to that southeast humidity and heat?
Are y'all ever going out on the road again? I hope Lenny hasn't forgotten how roll down the highway.
I have a 8v92 block, heads, cams, and crank I need to get rid of. Anyone have any good ideas where to sell them?
Is the fan clutch shot on that thing or does it only spin when an automatic clutch locks in?
It’s a fluid drive. It doesn’t engage fully until temps up in the coolant line.
@@BusGreaseMonkey figured it must be something like that! Thanks for the explanation
Bit of plastic welding to repair the cracks and she’ll be as good as new. What a bargain!
Why is "1490" a problem? What were you measuring?
Showing what you found and did what you did to correct the problem, seems like he's due a partial refund for what they screwed up. All they can say is no, this would also defer some of your cost......
👍👍👍👍👍
Noticed the engine fan was not turning at idle. Is that commom om a Detroit?
Gm is a thermostatically controlled fluid drive. Once the coolant warms up to a certain point it starts to feed oil to the fan drive
Maybe it's a viscous fan clutch that varies the drive with temperature? Ahhh...beaten with right answer.
@@BusGreaseMonkey Thanks, good to know.
Fan not spinning?
Fluid drive system, once coolant warms up enough, it feeds oil to the fan drive
Why isn’t the fan turning at idle?
GM is a thermostatically controlled fluid drive. Once the coolant warms up enough, it sends oil to the fan drive
Put a turbo 3-71 in your new Bennche !
Just kidding.

What is it with how common mechanics who just won't do their homework on vehicles they're working on are?
When technology ages, information about it becomes harder to find, and less knowledge about it is present in the people's minds. An old mechanic will instantly know there's a difference between a 2 and a 4 valve engine, but the new folks who didn't grow up with them, probably aren't aware of that.
Modern workshops don't have old data books anymore for the old machines. So perhaps the folks in the first shop google'd 'tappet clearance for [engine]' and found some snippets of info, but didn't realize that there were differences between 2 and 4 valve engines.
The reverse is also true. Some old mechanics and shops are absolutely brilliant with carbureted gasoline engines, but couldn't for the life of them reflash a modern ECU to get more power of a modern TDI engine, or find out which emissions part is probably gunked up causing it to run like ass.
The exact same goes for old electronics. Send a 50ish year old hifi system or even older valve radio out to the modern repairsman, and you get it back ruined.
In the same way, send an old greybeard tube tech who can absolutely do magic with his old tech, a modern digital radio, and he won't be able to fix that either.
So you end up with a very small amount of people who work with old tech out of personal interest. I grew up way after the tube era but i know my way around it pretty well. Same goes for BGM - he started with the old buses for fun, and taught himself (and others!) the tricks of the trade and i assume eventually started profiting of it. Eventually, the people who start out for fun, will be the only ones who can do this kind of work because for the big professional shops, there's just not enough money to be made, to invest in hundreds of hours of training for their technicians.
@@mfbfreak That really just sounds like apologism for people who can't be bothered to try and learn about things directly relevant to their field, especially in the modern era where this assertion that 'old technology is arcane' is not actually terribly true anymore.
And in many cases they clearly never even bothered to try looking anything up, with a consistent pattern of doing such. And that's very common in this field, where many shops to this day won't work on foreign cars, or at least not european ones - when most things are relatively universal - and the things that aren't are again quite often easily found on google. Like when I got my car back with a mis-adjusted set of belts and bent brackets (not to mention missing a/c support bracket fasteners) because the mechanics had never bothered to look things up and find out 'oh hey this one nut needs to be loosened before we try and adjust these!" like a brief entry into google would have told them.
And before someone says it, they do seem to make that effort for american marques at the shop in question, and it lost them thousands of dollars they could have gotten while I caught up on the deferred maintenance and a manual swap on my current project. Instead I spent last summer cleaning out the garage and am doing the job my own damn self. But they get all sorts of odd and orphan vehicles in their shop all the time, and seem to do well enough on it. I wasn't asking them to poke at the odd, early electronic fuel or ignition systems, just to do basic homework on how to tighten a belt in a slightly different way than normal. Thirty seconds cost them thousands. At least they were honest about not having so much as looked at my transmission they held onto for a week and didn't charge me anything, but... more to the point. And this is consistent experience I have with shops owned and run by people over 45.
And yes, I know it's 'not every' but it's enough. Don't be more offended that the implication is there than the fact it's a problem, it makes you a part of the problem.
@@elonmust7470 'Cos Scott said dude brought it to a shop, Teddy. Watch the daggone video.
Theodore give it a rest. He went to a well respected long time shop.
Looks like the fuel filters are not parallel??
12:00 my god people are pathetic. The way our society engenders dependence on others, the government, etc is ruining our planet
Little baby two stroke. Lol
Bus, Motorhome - a Large Hole where to throw money into like a Boat or a Plane. Enjoy.
Interesting how the fan runs at exact multiple of frame rate at idle...
Not quite, GM is a thermostatically controlled fluid drive, once the coolant warms up to a certain point, it starts to feed oil to the fan drive.
@@invisiblekid7374 Oh. Well makes sense. At higher RPM the fan moved asynchronously and back "stopped" at idle. Viscous drag?
