    Gotta love a 8v92. With the 5 speed they were easily the fastest of the greyhound buses I drove and could almost outclimb cars on serious highway hill grades like the Coquihalla snow shed hill. 80kph on that grade with bus L801 (former Maverick bus) with a good load of passengers. L800 was the fast though and could nearly pull 100kph on the same hill. Very unusual feeling leaning into the corners going uphill on a heavy grade..

      @@jlo13800 WAT? they run on diesel ... if you wanna try alternative fuels there is propane, or biofuels like Soy oil, or biodiesel, its not gonna ever run on ethanol because ethanol has very poor detonation characteristics so basically exactly the wrong fuel for a diesel engine.

    Scott you have mentioned more than once your distate for K&N filters. I don't like them either, they can really foul the electrical grid for the mass air flow sensor as that pre-oiled filter can get grease and dirt all over the wire grid in between the sensor and the air box on some cars.

    Some back in the day bus engine history, In the Soviet Union / Russia, various versions of this engine-type were produced at the YaAZ automobile factory in Yaroslavl.[18] Throughout World War II, the 4-71 engine both in locally assembled form (built by Lend-Lease provided American industrial equipment) and from USA-supplied kits had been used for Ya-12 light artillery tractors.[19] After 1945, the 4-71 engine entered production in a slightly modified configuration to suit the conditions of the Soviet Union branded "YaAZ-204".[18] After 1947 the factory used a copy of the 6-71 engine branded "YaAZ-206" in the heavy trucks YaAZ-210 and YaAZ-214 built from 1951 to 1959. The vehicle production was transferred to KrAZ in Kremenchuk, Ukraine in 1959, where trucks with newer versions of the YaAZ-206 stood in production until the appearance of the four-stroke V8-engined KrAZ-255 in 1967.[2

    Some years ago a friend in Oregon tried his car out on a dyno using a factory paper cartridge air filter and did a few pulls with a K&N set up... The latter caused a definite power loss ,mostly because it allowed hot air from under the hood to be used rather than the cooler outside air. So not really up to the job of improving horsepower out put .

    • @boosteddiesel1834
      @boosteddiesel1834 2 года назад +3

      The standard air intake has a cold air feed, if you don’t install one for the k&n you’ll get bad results. Otherwise k&n is a guaranteed power increase. The foam allows more air in which produces more power. Performance filters that take away power are either installed wrong or are cheap garbage

    The worst thing possible to do for a power increase, is to switch to an oiled filter like a K&N. My stock filter on my 03 Ford can keep up with the turbo on the 6.0 very well. As it gets near time to blow it off, or replace it. My black smoke is very minimal, and my engine is not stock. A better flowing piping helps a lot.

    K & N Filters are fine. People don't follow directions cleaning them (Using high pressure water such as hose with nozzle instead of running water over it which blows out some of the cotton in the creases). That ruins it and allows dirt through. They almost always over oil it. It takes very little oil to do it properly. I had one for over 300k miles and never had a dirty turbo or any oil problems.

    @weofnjieofing 2 года назад +1

    Any filter that flows more air, flows more dirt. If you have a race engine yes go as unrestrictive as you can but on a diesel bus engine designed to easily go hundreds of thousands of miles, it'll kill your engine prematurely. On an engines like this the power difference will be undetectable.

    • @mariopizzamanmario8563
      @mariopizzamanmario8563 2 года назад +1

      You'll still detect it - when it blows up... but that is the correct answer. K&N are for racers and tuners who want the last 5HP (or so).
      All others, who want the last 50,000 miles better not use them.

    Filtration isnt rocket science.
    In order to flow more air you need a bigger filter. In order to flow more air thru the same space you need less filtration (resistance).
    K&n type filters usually are installed on what is called a cold air intake. Thats laughable, they are open to the hottest place in a vehicle, the engine compartment, using the least dense air possible, making the least power possible...
    Gale Banks has a very good series of videos explaning this precept.

    • @mikeL5183
      @mikeL5183 2 года назад

      I laugh at people looking for a "cold air intake". Umm, my Subaru has a cold air intake right from the factory - the inlet draws from right above the grille! Is it the most direct pathway? Maybe not, but it's better than the hot air under the hood!

    Need to be careful with the K&Ns as they let lots of fine particulate in. I have to run them due to how small the airbox is in my car, but they do cause scuffing and polishing of the bores where the piston skirt is being loaded after a while due to all the fine silt. Anything off-road would be a definite no-no as they will quickly trash an engine in short order in dusty conditions.

    K&N is deceiving. Sounds and feels like more power initially but becomes problematic in short order. Might be proper for off road racing situations etc. But they don’t appear to be beneficial for street vehicle use.

My Outback is a rare gem in my region because of it having the 6-speed stick and I bought it with 123k on it, just rolled over 142k after having the coolant replaced and a bunch of other PM at 137.5k. I'm wanting it to last me 10+ years and so now I know to STAY AWAY from a K&N filter, stay with the stock paper element filter.
