- The loss of power was a new issue. Kingpin, wheel bearings, brake chamber leak, air leaks, suspension adjustment. Over tightened lug nuts.

Funny these overtorqued wheels. When i was an apprentice at a trailer shop there was a sticker right above the wheels that said torque to 565 ft/lbs. I asked the tech who was supervising me where the torque wrench was. He said no torque wrench, just hold the 1" drive impact gun trigger for 1 minute on each nut. I later looked up the model of impact specs and it puts out 1200 ft/lbs. lol
Jesus we could hold a 3/4 gun on a nut for 10 seconds and it’d be over 500 ft/lbs.
I had to use my torque multiplier to break 5 studs off a Country Coach that was over torqued and pulled the threads in the bud nuts. Life saver!!! Every air leak counts!!! Thanks Scott!

What a blessing that hill has turned into, no arguements if the bus will not climb the hill you need help.

Might need to start an inventory of the things you buy every time, like that turbo pipe, brake cans, air bags, or persuade US Coach to stock a container at your place ...

You guys are amazing. Try "free all" penetrating oil. I'm surprised that you don't use a smoke wrench on stuck hardware. Had to break out the 3/4" drive socket set and a 5' pipe torque multiplier to get the tires loose on my wife's minivan. It had new tires at the Goodyear tire store and they overtorqued all the lug nuts.
Love what you have done with your shop. You know when you guide the buses in it remains me of an Airport and how the guide the plane into the gate. Maybe you should put down some guide markers down so they can be in the same work space 100% of the time.

Good to hear the turbo issue is not the turbo itself. Kinda had a feeling hearing it run when he showed up it was in the piping or a clamp issue.

Pretty underpowered bus! Lucky you guys can even get parts these days with all the supply chain issues.
With the boost working it's not too bad at around 330hp and 950 torque.

Great video 👍 upgrade the multiplier handle breaker bar and socket and repair exhaust for future get it up the Hill and stock exhaust pipe tube start welding your own.
Love the Eagles more than the MCIs. Always underpowered and prone to rust. Just so cool. But Clint Black had a blacked out MCI w/full size satellite dish back in the 90s. 5ft wide and automated. Serviced at the shop on 65N just above Nashville. Almost as cool. As an Entertainers Eagle.

You might want to acquire a 2 inch gun, it demands a 3/4 inch supply line but with 1200 pounds of torque it ought to make removing over tightened lug nuts come off with ease. I bought one and never had trouble removing lug nuts when driving over the road. Thought I did have to buy my own 3/4 airline and fittings to get full power out of it.

I’d imagine if you can get the individual pieces (v-band flairs, flex, 90 degree elbow, etc) it probably wouldn’t be all that difficult, or expensive to make that normally expensive exhaust piece.
It would probably fit a little nicer than a pre-made off the shelf pipe, since it would be built specifically to fit the bus it was being put on.
20/20 advice, while working on my 044 scenicruiser, I put a wrench into my overall chest pocket, now I get to buy a new phone, folded the dam thing, then everything got real hot real fast. oops.

When you first said that torque multiplier was less than $100 I thought wow, you’ve really got your money’s worth out of it and was amazed it hadn’t failed yet. Sorry I jinxed you Scott! Happens all the time to me at work. I just need to keep my big yapper shut.

@@DaffyDuc69 I'm not sure if it is cast iron or not, but brazing something that will be under a stress load is sooo much stronger than a weld!
You can wear a leather glove and twist the impact socket in the direction you want it to go when using an impact gun. That reduction in backlash can save your bacon when you're using an impact gun that can't quite undo the fastener.
Also it sounded like the gun was set to the highest speed, not highest torque. The Milwaukee's have a high torques setting that's actually a little slower than level 3.
Lack of the use of antiseize causes that problem, but torque spec. Must be applied for proper reassemble.
The krauts used a similar torque multiplier tool to start the Tiger tanks in WW2
First bus I've seen with hub piloted wheels.

Did you say you used AeroKroil? My wife's uncle just introduced me to this oil and it is amazing! I just ordered a case of it and it wasn't cheap but great stuff to used on seized bolts!

I've been using Kroil for 40 years. My dad worked in a machine shop and brought it home.
The amount of soot on the rear around the access door is a good sign of a BIG exhaust leak. Note to customer: DON'T go back to the shop that did the previous "work"!

could you stock up on big diameter exhaust pipe,straight and 90* bends to make the need turbo pipes .a small ring roller could roll small diameter round steel to be used on the end of pipes for sealing the V-bands
That’s not a 90° 5-10° off
heli arc welder tube binder and some SS tubings you can make what you need in a very short time. You do enough jobs it would pay for itself and no second or third party involved less down time.
250 horses? You would think that bus would need double that and maybe more, wow.
For those watching and questioning the 250 HP rating, that's accurate but it probably has 650 FT LBS of torque. Don't let those low HP numbers on the Detroit's fool you. They're all torque monsters.
Torque monster? My diesel pickup truck has double that! Even bone stock new pickups make around 1,000ftlbs.
@@tlr-nut7275 what were bone stock diesel pickups making in the 1980s? I can assure you it wasn't even half of 1000 ft lbs. To try to compare a 40 year old engine to a new engine is an exercise in asshattery. For 1980 standards, 650 ft lbs was a torque monster. Do you have any other asinine assertions you would like to make or are you done being a troll?

@@tlr-nut7275 well yes troll, because that bus was built in the 80s, which you either didn't know or are failing to acknowledge. Those same style buses today come with engines like the Volvo D13 which produce 1850 ft lbs at 900 RPM. So yes, by 80s standards they are absolute torque monsters.

Not generally. Insurance is harder for a transit. Low floors don’t give you big bays for storage and house systems. It’s just harder but can be done

See that lug nut problem all the time now. Everyone impacts them on. Had discount tire strip 3 of 5 lug nuts on wife car. Almost feel off. I could make you that exhaust pipe for cheap. 32 years welding, did food grade stainless steel.
Definitely a marked difference in making it up the hill! As an old former Trailways bus driver here, really loved the Eagle buses!
Just a question...I heard the gentleman use his "high idle" after starting his engine. Do bus drivers nowadays not use this feature any longer, as I don't hear that when viewing other bus videos? Maybe a generational thing? Keep up the hard work, gentlemen!! 😊
Electronic engines can go to fast idle rightbaway. Mechanical engines have to wait to build air to about 60psi before it will engage
My high idle takes the engine up to 1200 rpm. That sounded like he was revving it up. I always let mine get a bit of oil at lower rpm before making the rpm high.

That’s because i started from a dead stop already on the incline. Not many buses would make it from where i tried to start.
And to be fair in the video i said i was familiar with the walk of shame backing down the hill.

With all the grime and grease caked on everything, does it make any sense to pressure wash the majority of the grime off before tackling the repairs?
I had 4 model 15 Eagles and 1956 scenic cruiser sold all of them should have kept one of them miss riding in a bus.
U.K. Better to have the wheel nuts too tight than leaving them very loose like a local tyre fitter did. Got the sack of course. Dick head would pick a Rolla to do it on. The only problem with these vids is they have to end, I could watch them all day.
I feel like anything that can't climb a hill without boost should have a lower gear, though I suppose that is more a design than a service issue.
That's a turbo'd 6V92. Higher HP diesel for that age bus. The 92ci's with that long stroke are real mountain goats on the long hills n passes with tha big Garrett turbo when all is right, valves, injectors, pump n boost system
I disagree. Just make sure the boost system works like it was designed.
Thousands of trucks use boosted engines as well and they climb over mountain passes every day. Same for diesel-electric train locs. Ships use boosted engines as well. They cross entire oceans.
Boosting is a proven concept.
But all those engines do have to be maintained. This includes the boost system.
No boost, no decent power.
@@jfv65 gears low enough to function with reduced torque is an even more proven concept, and normal wear will always eventually reduce torque as much as loss of boost, and gears must function there too, especially since reduced torque is INEVITABLE!!!!

A 5.9 Cummins. The cat c7 engines are boat anchors. They burn oil bad, if you over heat them, the engine is destroyed. The liners aren’t replaceable and they are very loud.
Get a DT466, anything older then 2003 non egr. If you get an EGR, get something 2007 and older, with out the DPF.

Giant rubber torsion springs about the size of a large welding tank are the suspension. It’s a great riding suspension. We will be adjusting it in videos soon so you will see it.

You might find a 12 point socket that fits the torque multiplier and use breaker bar.

@@BusGreaseMonkey it can work, a 12-point 15/16 can service most of a heavy truck from what I remember as it will fit over the square headed plugs using the box end
Scott a bit off topic. Did you see the market on VW Things? $20k+ for avg runners. $30k+ for restored. It's crazy.
The entire air cooled VW world is being overrun with tweaked out flippers and bone heads with more money than brains- it’s a very sad situation ….

10k out of a Michelin. Wow, that's an expensive fault. Should get nearly 100k out of a steer axle Michelin.

It's shocking how many of these private coaches are unsafe
At that price I should start manufacturing those pipes myself, there is not much money in parts and I could build a superior part using 304L or 316L stainless steel instead of mild steel. If a used one is $300 how much is a brand new one. They would be easy to make once a simple mock up fixture is made.
what is the weight on one of those busses?
My guess is around 34,000 lbs for a converted eagle. +- 4,000 for build variations

6v92ta running right will spin the tires up that hill.
Why did someone put a 6-92 in that thing? Interesting setup on the rear cap, is that additional cooling or just aftercooler? Hopefully there is enough adjustment left on the Rods to get the ride height correct.

Many Eagle buses came with 6V92T in them.
Your work brother I used to use pictures bubble solution ones your blow bubbles with that's what I used to use to find air leaks at work the best minnows pretty cheap Golden Gate at the dollar store big bottle for like a dollar extreme pain disorder 30 shot from what I could see the bearings that's a good catch on all that in a boat diagram I want you was Joe if I would have done both and I would have checked the rears to just saying that's what procedures we would have ended up taking I'm a retired mechanic diesel bit buses with your trucks even pickups cars tractors heck I think we worked on everything even come there's carrying almonds and walnuts and step up for loading we worked on spreaders all kinds of stuff I used to work on me CDC buses here in California ways to maintain and repair all the buses for CDC call majority we were there man shop and far as I know they're still got the account semi one by there used to do school buses with neighbor get overloaded Valhalla probably couldn't figure out there bring it to us I miss working on all that stuff great video brother great work enjoyable to watch thank you and God bless you and your family thank God bless United States of America when Jesus name amen USA

I use a half inch drive Milwaukee IMPAC to do all my semi truck tires I know they are a little pricey but they’re worth the money

User manual specifically states NO impact tools.
Those wheel studs are overstressed n the threads pulled, will fail on the road , Nuts are ruined by sa me mistreatment
