Odds are it’s just because of the lack of a tag axel.
The tag helps with weight but also keeps a coach tracking straight. Without a tag you wind up chasing the steering wheel…the wander some.
A tag makes a big difference.

An old mechanic (probably 40 yr old) told me 50 yrs ago when I was 17 & learning mechanical repair: He said "always check the simple s*** first on anything". Over the decades I learned he was correct.

A guy I know that runs a 318 (8v71) in his log truck ran a regular Cummins type micro switch to the throttle lever on an L Bracket in his truck for the Jake so it worked like a Cummins, IE Would kill the engine if you left the switch on. He did it when he added Jakes to the truck but never changed to a standard buffer switch because it worked just fine.

"Jake", "Jake Brake", "Jacobs Engine Retarder" or "engine compression release brake" is a wonderful device that can save your life if properly used and maintained. One may be surprised to know that the 'father of the highway diesel engine', Mr. Clessie Cummins, designed & engineered its practical application & usage on todays road-going diesel engines.
